Good morning /HSG/ happy to see so much spider8reath art.

In recent times I haven't lost sight of the OTP. Just occupied one could say.

In another world/another comic. John and vriska together at last, could become a traveling duo who never stays in one place. John is a comedian and a trickster, and Vriska is a swashbuckler and adventurer.

One of my favorite things bout an mspfa called nightfall was that John and Vriska would often be doing mundane activities, John tries to make Vriska engage and Vriska tries her best to understand. It's so cute. Seeing them fumble around trying to understand each other is just as fun when they get each other perfectly.

I would love to see stuff where vriska tries to get John to do adventurerus and crazy stuff. Much to his chagrin.

homestucks style is so unique that its basically impossible for me to parse what influenced him, its so steeped in well established hussie-isms you would think he came out of the womb drawing like that.

honestly i dont care for the art of homestuck past act 5. the death of hero mode is actually pretty symbolic of the death of the action and adventourus side of homestuck in exchange for bean mode/people fuckin talkin about gay shit like their feelings. (i joke but only partially, the increased drama in act 6 is a drag)

i'll double down on the simpsons being a major influence. you can see it in his cartooning (i.e. spritemode); how he draws stubby-fingered hands and blunt, rounded teeth. it's especially clear during parts of act 6 - the weird close-ups on the mouths are right out of the simpsons. you can also see it in some of his pre-mspa work (the bug eyes with beady pupils and short round noses)

the proportions he gives the characters are closer to the early peanuts strips (note the almost cherubic proportions).

the dynamic posing and exagerated perspective in hero mode is probably inspired (on some level) by 90's image comics (we know he grew up reading those things)

thing is, hero mode didn't look good. out of all the stuff he tried it looked the worst imo. hussie draws very stiff poses when he tries to "seriously" draw characters at those proportions (his poses are fine when he's doing looser lower-effort stuff) so the result is just these weird gangly kids.

but that sequence was cool and cathartic so this is why i hype it a lot. there is not much to dwell about it.

i often just don't treat the characters like they are real but more like its a dream i'm watching.

The purposefully amateurish look, that texture. That imperfection is what made Homestuck cool to me.

Those are my favorite art styles for Homestuck.

I generally prefer more anatomical art. Like when the characters have defined limbs and bodies. And if they don't. Then just commit to the fully stubby proportions of sprite mode.
