Nice omega

My Weekdater 6218-8971 arrived from Japan over Christmas and a NOS OEM crystal finally got here from Asia today. Time to replace the old beat to shit one.

I wish someone made a sapphire replacement :(

I'm wearing this a lot. I love to hear the rotor spin. Sounds like casting a fishing line. I can whip my wrist and it'll spin a good while. Then the gears slow to a deep buzz. It's satisfying. And it feels so light.
Great watch for under $100.

This is kind of a neat release.
Hand wound alarm movement, 36 and 39mm options, a bunch dial styles from very vintage to quite modern.
I guess the reason no one talks about it is that it's microslop that's 3 times more expensive that the CW tier microslop people are used to.

Cool! Interesting you went for the gold cap one, they're not my cup of tea but i can see why some might like them. What do you plan on doing about the case? I would suggest you do not polish it at all, you will lose the sharp edges. How's it running?
>>
>>18631804
>microslop
Is it? It's an old brand afaik, known for making these.
>>
>>18631804
>This is kind of a neat release.

It's literally a 70 years old model that's been relaunched.
And yes, it's overpriced for a frankenstein brand.
Dead brand that has been revived by that french guy who also owns Nivada Grenchen and like 3 other brands at least.
You can't command those kind of prices if you are not a legit luxury brand but a frankenstein quasi-luxury one.

It's at my local watchmaker now for a disassembly, cleaning, oiling - I am just getting started with tinkering and while I have basic tools I don't have a press to set the crystal.

It seemed to be holding time okay, he's going to put it on the timegraph for me when he's done.

I went gold because I want to wear it with suits... and I don't plan on polishing it at all, want to keep those sharp lines.

My hope is I can find another one in silver to mix it up though. Prices seem to be steep right now for 6218's.

When I ordered my cocktail time I didn't even know these cool secret clasps existed. Just looked like a regular leather strap to me. On one hand it's super simple and fits perfectly and is very clever. But on the other hand it's kind of a ruse. It's like a clip-on necktie in that regard.
I'm not complaining. It will last a lot longer as you're never really bending anything or dragging it through the clasp. Quite ingenious. I really feel I should have known every last detail of a watch that spendy before buying it though. Lousy research on my part.

I have some quick questions.
First, I love this watch but the small seconds is not aligned properly, in that it jumps at about 34 seconds and not right at 60. It should, right? The minute hand should advance to each indicator as the subdial reaches the top I'd think.
Is this something my jeweler can realign easily by just adjusting it to match the main movement?
Second, all mechanicals wind, right? Even a screwdown crown automatic that mainly benefits from the rotor will always be able to manual wind?
Because a couple of these when you wind them there's no resistance and the "clicking" I guess is much finer. A couple I have without autos feel totally different when winding. You really know you're loading the spring.
And third, is it a good thing when a rotor spins a lot on its own? Some of my more expensive ones don't stay spinning. A cheaper one you flick the wrist and RZZZZZZZ, it just goes for a while. And that seems like it'd be a sign it's well balanced and efficient. The others seem too heavy to catch like that. Is all this normal?
Thank you.
>>
>>18632147

I just settled on this for my nephew's birthday. Got the PT5000 upgrade and what I thought was the best dial design and most neutral color for him. Glass caseback so he can see how it works. In an age of smart watches maybe he'll appreciate it as much as I would. 36mm makes it a good size for a starter watch. Hopefully by explaining that it never needs a battery he'll think it's cool. Maybe not. But if he doesn't want it I'll totally keep it. It's close to watches I already have but I like it a ton and would totally add it to the collection. I might pick up another couple Tandorios anyway. I almost got him a titanium but it didn't come with the better movement or the window. And this copper blasted finish looks great with the leather strap. Either way it's got good depth rating and he's around the water a lot. Just hit a new sale so the price dropped a few bucks plus I got another coupon. Totally happy to score all this for under $90.
I'll explain to him that if he really likes this watch he can save up and get some name brand version of it instead of his first car. Get his sense of value off on the right track.

You're welcome anon. It's a pretty decently documented movement, so a short search should always get you some results if you need anything, or you can just ask here. Post a pic every now and then, in the other thread. I hope you enjoy your Weekdater!
I tried out my old Weekdater on a new strap today (i didn't set the time, so ignore that) and it looked good. I have to get it serviced soon and polish the crystal to make it even nicer.

You both misunderstand. None of this has to do with a car or buying him a car. He's my nephew so it's not my job to get him a car. The JOKE was that someday when he's driving age he will be able to choose between an entire car to drive OR a stupid "name brand" watch that's as good as what I got him for less than $100.

Always missing the point, you guys. Where you both got the idea that the watch was in lieu of the car or that I'm buying him a car ever is beyond me. I didn't write it in a confusing way.
I should maybe take your brains into consideration and simplify next time if that was too complex to comprehend.

so when I bought it, it was listed as a 6218-8971

The crystal I ordered was a T06 for an 8971

My watchmaker couldn't set the crystal... we couldn't figure out why.

Turns out the watch was listed wrong and it's the earlier 8970 and needs a T07.

Thankfully the seiko parts guy I ordered the T06 one had a T07 in stock but I gotta wait another few weeks for it.

But hey, it's really solid after a service and oiling on the time graph:

Most of my quartz watches came with a little plastic thing that keeps them from starting up. Maybe it's because of bombs.
The "module just dies"? I don't think anything works like that. Maybe keeping your old Frogger score or something. A watch should be able to turn back on.

It's a bit complicated/murky with the reference numbers. The only practical difference is the supposedly the crystal and the tension ring that is needed to secure the chapter ring to the dial or something like that. The tension ring isn't needed on the 8971. The crystal is supposed to be the same, the only difference is that tension ring. T06 should fit, i think i've read about someone lese fitting it.
Here's the catch the case might be a 8970 but the dial a newer, 8971 one, so sometimes it's not exactly clear which model you actually have. Read some more into it, i have to go to work. When was it produced btw?

Some of it is going to marketing, obviously. Prestige pricing plays a part in it. You’re also paying for their capital improvements.

Complaining about pricing is always pointless. If you don’t want to pay, then don’t. No one is forcing you. If enough people share the same opinion, then it will reflect in the sales numbers and Longines will adjust accordingly. That’s the free market in action. Money is how you communicate with companies, not squeaky-voiced whining.

This is such a stupid misconception. The sales numbers will always stay the same according to the percentage of dumb rich people in the world, which is actually rising since the third world is getting globalized into the same shit as every other country.

I snagged this like-new PRX for $425 and I'm really glad I didn't listen to the hipster contrarians about it. It's a fantastic watch once you get it in your hand, it definitely holds up. Feels like it has good mass without wanting to spin around your wrist or chafe, absolutely wonderful feeling when you wind it or set the time, it feels very quality. The photo doesn't do the dial justice, it's mesmerizing in person the way the dark green catches the light. I'm very glad I bought this, especially for this price. I can see why it's so popular now.

If I wanted a basic "go anywhere, do anything" watch and didn't care about the movement, I would get this: https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-us/T1274101104100.html

Bracelet and blue dials goe with everything, quartz means its thinner and can double as a dress watch since it can slip under cuffs, and it doesn't have more complications besides a basic date window.

Well, I pulled the trigger on it. At full price too. I saw those greedy faggots on ebay asking $555.00 + $120.00 shipping (I shit you not, they pull that shit ALL the time) and figured I'm not going to be stuck wanting one when they sell out again and having to pay even more. I scoured the internet for a while but couldn't find any lower price.
Amazon was selling at the same price as the official site but I get it tomorrow. Kick ass.
Got some shitters though, posting them in the shitter thread.

A friend of mine is into gunplay and sent me a photo of this new model he is buying from Japan when it's released. I saw the blue color on it, and really was quite taken with it. I am looking for a stark, bright blue watch like this. Most every watch I can find is a dark matte or glossy blue, or leans too far into being a bright green. Anything spring to mind for you guys?

Heat blued hands are different than lacquered hands. Proper heat blued hands look like different colors in different light conditions, anywhere from bright cerulean to black. Lacquered hands always look the same.
Cheaper watches use lacquer because heat bluing has a high failure rate. Badly heat blued hands will look blotchy.
>>
>>18637903
I considered getting one but I found the sizing really awkward when I tried it on. The 40 felt too big and the 35 felt like a woman's watch. Had a pretty dial though, I like the mother of pearl one.
>>
>>18638340
> the 35 felt like a woman's watch.
Really? When I tried it, it seemed to me to wear basically like a 36mm Datejust. The integrated bracelet makes them wear large, which is why the 40mm version wears like a 42-43mm watch.
>>
>>18638340
they have the 38mm now
>>
>>18638374
Yeah, but it will take some time before they make some decent colors for the 38mm size.

The blue sunburst dial in 35mm quartz is the truest version to the original. That’s the best one to get, IMO.
>>
>>18638374
The 38mm ones are also nearly a thousand dollars, which is 500 too much to pay for any Tissot. Are they trying to move upmarket or something? If I have a thousand dollars to spend on a watch, it certainly would not be a Tissot.

>>
>>18638418
>Either way, I wish Rolex made more textured dials like they used to.
Rolex did not used to make their own dials, hence all the million variations they used to have. After they brought production in-house, they stopped. Kind of a shame.
>>
>>18638415
Lovely on a gold DJ, not so much on a steel one imo.

>>18638447
They still used to make plenty of interesting and fun dials like 3 years ago. Think plam motif, fluted motif, floral pattern, jubilee pattern etc.
My own theory is that they gradually want to reduce the number of different variations that you can order a Datejust in so you AD gets delivered more than just one of the available configurations per month. Think about how many different bezel styles they used to offer.
Even today the 36 + 41 mm versions alone gotta be a hundred possible configurations depending on material, bracelet, colors etc.

I'm an automation mechanic at work and I've been thinking about upgrading my beater work watches to an actual luxury work watch I can wear for the rest of my career and to mow the grass and shit. Preferably it's under 40mm, automatic, thin as possible, I prefer day and date but I'm probably going to have to compromise with just a date because there just aren't many day date options, as much brushed or bead blasted finish as possible to avoid scratched to shit polished surfaces, solidly antimagnetic.

I want to wear a thin comfortable watch that won't get in the way working in tight spaces and it's a little hard to find that in automatic watches before you start getting a little higher in the price ranges.

Watches are meant to be worn, especially ones obviously meant to be "tool watches." I'm not a little bitch trying to shelter a bunch of safe queens from every little blemish so my "investment" isn't depreciated. Hey guys! I just pulled the trigger on this 39mm Xeric Retroscope Jump Hour all thanks to a recommendation on here.
And I gave credit where credit is due of course.

Anyway, sometime in March I get this beauty. Saved a pretty penny on the pre-order, but they wouldn't also apply the 10% for giving them my fucking phone number and email address. Bad move that. I don't want any of their $1,100 watches. This will do.
They already went up from $199 after becoming so popular. I hate when that happens. So I got close. I'll block their number and unsubscribe to email if they abuse it.

I'll do an unboxing thing when it arrives. Thanks for introducing me to more than just fucking Rolex and Seiko and shit. If you haven't seen this fucker in action watch a video. They're rad.

I'm conflating it with some other watch someone in one of these threads was going to pay $5k for just like it was nothing. I don't remember. Tissots are like usually $1k and under, right? Depending on your budget, Rolex has you covered in that regard. My father has worn the same Datejust every day for 30 years on the job, playing tennis, skiing, hiking and working out. It’s got its fair share of scuffs but it’s not destroyed. Every ten years it goes to service and comes back looking brand new.
>>
>>18638678
Why do people keep recommending the Milgauss? It’s thick, it’s heavy, and it’s got way too much high polish on the case and bracelet. Is it just to be contrarian?
>it’s not a Sub, GMT or Daytona. Let me tell you about this deep cut from the Rolex catalogue.
>>
>>18638854
>Prediction; this is the year Tag becomes cool
I just don’t see it. It’s not that they don’t have a path to being cool, because they do and it’s quite obvious (just start remaking the old Heuer chronographs with the original dimensions) but it’s so obvious that they clearly know about it and refuse to do it.

They’ve put forth some bad-faith efforts to remake the original Carrera and others, but always with a bloated, oversized case with a date window no one wants.

Part of the reason the Speedmaster is so popular is that it is basically unchanged since the 60s. It’s a new, vintage chronograph. Why can’t TAG do the same?
>>
>>18638615
Coffin style
>>
>>18638836
>Not anti homage/rep watches, but Tissot is practically a shitter brand already
I think the difference between a shitter brand and budget brand is customer service. If your AliExpress shitter dies, Chang tells you to go pound sand, if you responds at all.
Tissot will honor its warranty.
>>
>>18638910
They kind of don't in the modern lineup. The explorer would be perfect if only it had at least the date. Explorer 2 and submariner are bigger than I want. Datejust has polished lugs and center links now, I'd have to look for an older used one to find something appropriate.
>>
>>18638980
>I'd have to look for an older used one to find something appropriate.
That’s hardly a sacrifice. Older DJs look better than the newer ones and Rolex still services older models going back to at least the early 80s, as far as I can attest to in my personal experience.
>>

>>
>>18638913
It used to be a good rec because nobody liked it so it was pretty readily available at some ADs.
Then Rolex discontinued it and the prices on the secondary market have almost tripled. Now is the absolute worst time to get a Milgauss.
>>
>>18638983
Did they make a brushed finish datejust with the modern siloxi hair spring movement?
>>
>>18638986
It's also totally obsolete now.
>>
>>18638980
This is why dropping the oysterdates was a mistake.
>>
>>18638989
You know the answer to that. Ask yourself why you feel you NEED a silicon hairspring. You just want modern features for the hell of it? If so, that’s fine. Don’t say that magnetism is the answer, though, because Rolex’s parachrom hairspring is effectively amagnetic to begin with. No matter what you do, you don’t NEED a fully amagnetic watch any more than you need a 1000m dive watch.
>>
>>18638993
You mean the Oyster Perpetual Date? IIRC, the Oysterdate was some hand-winding thing.
>>
>>18638995
Continued from >>18638995
(I read it back to myself and realized I kind of sound like a jerk and didn’t mean to)

Their size might be an issue but the newer Omegas have silicon hairsprings but they probably have too much polish for your taste.
>>
>>18638995
I actually do need antimagnetic watches, I'm working in equipment with a lot of computers and electronics and electric motors and electric fields and all that shit. I'm actually the kind of watch customer that this feature is made for.

Omega, again, modern lineup is too bloated and/or polished.

I think I got it. I figured it all out, - the watch game.

You can just buy a Rolex, any Rolex really, and post it here. It doesnt matter how good or bad this Rolex is. It is irrelevant. It will still be a Rolex. Forever.

Any criticisms, any outrage or remarks will be met with one simple fact. I have a Rolex and you dont. Even if you have Tudor or Omega, Breitling or Blancpain, - I have Rolex still.

It is really that simple. And IRL it is even better. I am wearing a Rolex on my wrist and that's it. If you want to unironically win a watch game, save enough money for Rolex, any authentic model. This is my legit advice for anyone. You will kill any watch nerd and feel confident with women without even trying.

If your Rolex is a good looking one, even better. There are literally no arguments against it.

I like this Phistashio Oyster Perpetual one. Save your money for a Rolex, Anon.

4chan answer: it’s generic Richemont sl*p
Personal answer: When I bought my Explorer the guy at my AD brought out the small Flieger IWC Mark XX or whatever because it was essentially the same price. A great dial that you could read across the room but truly bad quality in comparison to the Explorer (or OP or DJ). Overly sharp edges everywhere, badly shaped lugs, blobby lume etc…
I don’t remember much about the movement but I assume it’s also a step below. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t a low quality watch but I didn’t understand how they are pricing this on the same level as watches that are two levels above them.
Maybe Rolex can work with economy of scale here but I doubt Richemont has trouble manufacturing cases and movements in massive quantities.

However, if you’re the one recommending the Milgauss in >>18638678 then that’s not a great recommendation either. The Milgauss is pretty awful and Rolex was right to discontinue it. Maybe it will come back in the future with the Land-Dweller movement. That would be cool.

The only thing that makes the milgauss interesting is the dials, the green crystal version, and the lightning bolt seconds hand. There's no reason they couldn't do things like that on other watches.

Do they even have a single recognizable model? I couldn't even name one. Actually there's the shogun because it's a kickass ref but it's from the 90s.
They have some quite unrefined dress style watch line, some me-too integrated bracelet meme that I have never seen anyone actually buy, probably some uninspired dive watch because why not.

>buy B&M's RnD dept that's currently developping a new caliber
>use the base caliber as the architecture for the ValFleurier production for IWC and Panerai
>drop B&M when they have exhausted their usefulness

Just post the link to whatever database of knowledge schizos like you draw from. You got some Tweets or something? A video on BitChute or Odysee perhaps? Maybe Alex Jones uncovered something.

I'll read your "evidence". Where is it? Did I not dig deep enough here?

Ok as much as I think microbrands are scams I think I'm getting this.
Stone dial, 36mm, 20mm lug width, 9mm thin, manual LJP movement.
Shameless calatrava rip off as usual with microshit but even PP themselves as such trend chasers that they make these as 39mm dinner plates nowadays.
>>
>>18640337
Wow, it's nice. But $1,800 nice? I couldn't do it. They're all unique because it's a slice of rock, right? That one looks like palette full of smeared oil paints. I could see the hour hand maybe getting lost in some of it. I've seen more toned down examples. The idea of it is cool.
I'd sooner get some of that criss-crossy meteor shit if I wanted something like that myself. I guess if you can see the one you're actually buying beforehand it's another story.

And no one considers 39mm to be "dinner plate" size.

But it does look nice on the website. Lush huge photos of it from various angles, the 50 hour power reserve... I can see why you like it.
How many watches do you have and how often will you wear the Baltic if you get it? I imagine there must be people out there who buy $2k watches the way I buy $50 ones: only to have them sit in a box.

that crown looks difficult to wind for a manual wound watch

its also the reason why i sold my speedmaster
>>
>>18640355
Yes that's also what the guy was saying in that reddit post, a shame really because crown action is normally the enjoyable part of having a manual movement.
>>
>>18640355
>its also the reason why i sold my speedmaster
Same. That was the stiffest winding crown I’d ever experienced, and having it tucked under the bezel and between the crown guards made it worse.

OK which one of you got the last JDM Seiko you know the one I'm talking about.

I would never get another expensive watch. They just complicate your life if you care about accuracy and keeping them safe. Plus getting a nice watch when you’re too young sets your future expectations too high.

Yeah, we have been influenced (literally) by youtubers with 10 watches collections.

Then you have to keep them in a safe, get an insurance, hide them, that's totally dumb.
Have one Rolex, have two, then watches you are ok to lose.
>>
>>18640433
I never even wear my Rolex. If I’m doing anything sporty I wear my green prx which gets tons of compliments. If I’m doing anything else I wear my santos because it’s thinner and keeps better time

I feel like a lot of collectors who spend too much time online are overly influenced by social media. Like, even if you don’t like Rolex, you HAVE to have a Rolex in your collection or no one will take you seriously.

It's not to be taken seriously - who the fuck cares what some watch neckbeards on the internet think? The real reason you need a Rolex is because they set the baseline for what a good watch is. They're not the best, but they show you what a good bracelet is, what a good dial is, what a good case is, etc... Then not only do you appreciate it more when you see the lofty heights actual high end luxury brands can get to, but you also understand why aliexpress and mall watches you once thought were "just as good" actually fall short.

Of course you can!
Don't pay any attention at all to these wannabe snobs who don't even own anything better than that.
And even if they do, imagine how much of a pathetic virgin one would have to be to gatekeep these threads and try to shun people with watches that aren't an enormous waste of money.
Just laugh at these incel posers and post your shitters with pride. You know you're a better person than they are. And I know it too.

They start these threads like "everyone and every watch is welcome" and then they pull this shit like, "you can't bring your dumpy little wares in here with the big boys".

They are weak little faggots with insecurities I will never understand. They don't matter.
Stay and help me piss them off! LOL

>Rolex: the baseline for what a good watch is

LOLOLOL
Totally brainwashed by branding and cultural presence. Rolex has succeeded in making people think they are the standard.
>>
Always good to finish off a thread with some old-fashioned samefagging.
God, this board needs /pol/-style IDs.
>>
>>18640671
If rolex isn't the standard for luxury watches, what brand is?

I don't know how you're going to argue they're not, almost every watch they make is the measuring stick by which their relative "genre" of watch is judged. Almost every dive watch or GMT is in some way modeled after the rolex.
>>
>>18640677
Who do you think is samefagging? You people are idiots. I don't think samefagging is real. I don't believe people generate conversations between themself and a fake persona that they are also writing. What would be the point of that? Like writing a play? Having dialogue between characters? Who would do that here? Why would they? It's odd that you think that's happening. And you think we'd observe this if people had IDs? Or just that it would discourage it? I really don't believe any of that fantasy is based on real events, anon.
>>
Not sure if samefagging or the thickest gaslighting I've ever seen.

>I don't think samefagging is real. I don't believe people generate conversations between themself and a fake persona that they are also writing. What would be the point of that?
It’s not hard to imagine if you rub those two brain cells together.

>post a watch
>people make fun of you, as is normal on 4chan
>can’t handle banter, so you reply to your own post with positive comment, making it seem like lots of people actually like your post
>reply frequently to the posts making fun of you, making it seem like the opinions making fun of you are outliers.

Obviously, if we had poster ID’s, this wouldn’t be a thing because you’d be able to see it’s the same guy making all the posts.
>>
>>18640973
I resent the implication that I would ever fucking do that. And there's no way to even deny it. You post a screenshot and then the prick just says "You obviously photoshopped it. Anyone with half a brain can do that in 30 seconds."
And this is then just as likely to you people? Really? On an ANONYMOUS site where no one's words can hurt you, you think there are people writing fake comments to themselves in support of themselves and then also falsifying fake evidence exonerating them?

I just don't see it going that far. But that's the way these things are. With that "air-tight" no-win system. Just to be accused is damnation enough.
>>
>>18640973
>someone posts a watch

>normal people leave the thread forever
>only mentally ill retards like the greek attentionwhore and the finnish copypasta spammer stay to spam the same pictures non stop "ironically"
>it's so bad that the people who don't care about this sad attempt at making board culture trash need to make another thread
>you join the other one and spam SHITTER XD ROLEX XD under the pretense that it's customary on 4chan so now we have two trash threads instead of one
when will take the hint that we don't like you and don't want anything to do with you?
>>

>>
>>18641007
lol, you're a nut. But I can't convince you otherwise I guess. I try and point out how basically no one but me uses perfect grammar and punctuation and follows all the rules, therefore it's inconsistent anyway, but it won't even slow you down a bit. You'd next tell me I *deliberately* used a different style to help fool everyone. Right? Because you're SICK. You will make any leaps in logic to make it still stick.
So here's my photoshop work. It's just MS Paint and I used the line drawing feature there in yellow.
