what's your opinion on MING watches?
>>
>>18641032
Neat designs, but I’m unsure of the quality in relation to the price. Micro brands always make me nervous anyway because you never know if they’ll be around to service your watch or supply parts if you need them.
>>
Lord help me, I am dangerously tempted by 90s-ish Breguet Type XXs that cost a quarter of what a new one does and don't have the Swatch Group mandated date window.
>>
>>18641043
See OP. He’s got one (or, the pic he posted has one in it)

I think they’re great watches. Robust movements, not too thick (by automatic chronograph standards) good water resistance, pretty elegant for a sports watch.
I would not bother with the bracelet version, though. Save your money, because that bracelet is crap.
>>
>>18641043
If you are tempted to, act soon. Prices on the are going up. Decent condition ones (still have their bezel paint and lume pip, not over polished to hell) are close to 6k now. Good ones are closer to 7k.
>>
>>18641063
>overpolished
This. Careful buying anything from Japan. They just ram everything against the buffing wheel. Sure, they don’t have any scratches, but they’ve also obliterated any edges.

Can something like an IWC Pilot (the normal size one, not the big one) be suitable as a dress watch?
>>
>>18641300
Yes, it's a versatile proper watch, mostly daily tho.

The 36mm pilot in blue is delivered on aligator strap instead of bracelet (which is kind of ass in a way, because the 18mm bracelet is almost impossible to find aftermarket). So yeah, definitely dressy.

It worked out in the end, and there are about 5 jewelry shops with good watch selection around it for when I drop back in. Plus that 15% off works better since they carry and can order Swatch brands. Could go for broke and get a Railmaster or Seamaster.

> so if i cant post a picture of my watch or ask for watch recommendations

Good job trying to tie two things together that are totally unrelated. You can ask for recommendations all you want. You’re encouraged to engage in discussion of why certain recommendations are better than others.
Posting a completely context free image of a watch and a drink is trolling. You know it is. That was exactly the reason why you posted it.

I’m not going to get upset and scream at you. Instead, I will genuinely ask you, in good faith, why you feel the need to ruin something that other people enjoy and find useful.
>>
>>18641477
>what's a watch i can buy that is genuinely unique and niche?
there are a bunch of independent manufacturers out there that make very unique-looking watches. how unique is up to you. Romain Gauthier or Laurent Ferrier, for instance, make pieces that look normal and others that look pretty crazy.
You’re pretty much guaranteed to never see one on someone else’s wrist since these indies typically don’t make more than a few hundred watches per year.
>>
>>18641477
> what's a watch i can buy that is genuinely unique and niche?
>i have a submariner and a yellow gold day date and a g shock currently
What’s your budget and what type of watch are you looking for? Dressy? Complicated?
Do you want something that’s uncommon and you won’t see in the wild (but not necessarily online) or something truly rare?

I mean, some high-end JLCs are rare, in terms of production numbers.
There are plenty of independent producers out there that satisfy your requirements.

Neal's "hell of a nice watch" is a quartz Piaget Polo.

This is the closest thing they have on ebay. There's another vaguely the same shape but a different design for over twice the price of this one.

I feel like Piaget in general flies under the radar. Just too small of a company and too expensive for normal people to make in-roads in pop culture. That’s fine by me, though, since it keeps prices down.

Nothing wrong with a Selita 510 plus Sinn regulate all their watches. Thickness can be mitigated by good case design, which Sinn does
>>
Plus the Sinn is an actual pilots watch the crystal won't pop off from extreme pressure change and Sinn pressure test all their watches for water resistance to 120%
>>
>>18642556
> Nothing wrong with a Selita 510
No, it’s a fine movement, but it’s also totally antiquated and only costs about 300 dollars. That’s movement does not belong in a watch costing 3k. If Sinn only charged 2k, the watch would be a steal. 3k is being greedy and realizing how the market for used Speedmasters has climbed.

>plus Sinn regulate all their watches.
That’s not a feature. That’s a must. The only companies that don’t are Chinese microshitters, but they also don’t charge thousands.
>>
>>18642570
Have you actually handled a Sinn? They feel premium and fit like a glove. Dials made in Frankfurt am Main, cases made by SUG (Sächsische Uhrentechnologie GmbH Glashütte). Bracelets probably made in China but Omega does that too.
>>
>>18642578
>Have you actually handled a Sinn? They feel premium and fit like a glove
I own a 556. It’s a really well made watch but I can still admit that a brand I like is being greedy.

Besides Rolex, what watch brand is actually trying their best and cares deeply about watches? Grand Seiko? Sinn? Nomos? All of the high horology brands have great movements but not in a compelling package like Rolex. (e.g. Royal Oak at 5bar WR lmao.) Rolex needs a legit contender because the watch landscape is pretty fucking boring. Almost everything looks like dogshit.

> Microbrands usually use a replacable movement anyway. What is even the point of the servicing, just put in a replacement seiko or miyota.
If it’s something replaceable like an off-the-shelf movement, that’s no problem m but what if you need other commonly replaced parts like a handset or a crown? What if they make some custom module for the movement or a unique crystal shape? If the company goes under (which is totally possible with these micro brands that only have two or three employees) then the watch you bought is now useless.

Again, if it’s a cheap Chinashitter, no problem, but a Ming can cost close to ten thousand dollars. For that price, I expect to keep that watch for life.
>>
>>18642988
You can find similar handsets because the nh and miyota movements have plenty to choose from. People break stems more than they ever lose crowns.
>>
>>18642890
$150
>>
>>18643069
If you had your Rolex or Cartier serviced and it came back with generic parts, you’d probably be upset. If you paid Rolex money for a Ming and got generic replacement parts following service, would you be fine with that?
>>
>>18642650
Sorry, I phrased that the wrong way; I'm already set on buying the Polar Explorer.
What I meant was: These two watches seem like a very good deal in the used watch market generally, to the point where I can't think of a better entry level luxury sports watch than those two. Unless of course you want something smaller or are dead set on a chronograph.

>>18642653
yeah okay, there's plenty of good deals for used ones but I feel like you're not getting quite the same amount of watch even at that lower price
>>
>>18642866
>If Omega sold the Seamaster and Speedmaster in 40mm
The 42mm Speedmaster is already basically a 40mm watch. They measure the crown guards as part of the case diameter so the width is overstated.
That’s why the 42mm SMP uses the same size bezel as the 39mm FOIS Speedmaster which has no crown guards.
>>

>>

Leaning strongly towards the 16570 because I like the thinner case and I don't need the super cool new movement. The retro style orange GMT hand is nice though.
>>
>>18643110
Nice.

The funny thing about the “retro” orange hand is that that’s just fading. The original hand color of the old 1655’s was red like the 16570. They just faded over time to orange.

Because Omega and Bulova actually went to the moon, not just space. Omega also paid nasa to make the speedmaster their official watch, so maybe there are legal reasons Rolex can’t advertize themselves like that (despite the fact many rolexes ended up on the moon). Or they just don’t want to play seconds

How long do you think it'll be before we have the technology to just send nanobot painters in there to just make it how you like? You'd have to open up some part of the watch for them to enter, but a grey worm the size of a grain of rice would pour out of your vial near the watch and then like a tiny cloud you'd see it migrate to the opening and slowly disappear, and minutes later your date discs would be basically reversed and looking perfect in the right color and your grey goo nanobots would shimmer from the watch back up into your keeping tube.
Won't that be something?
Also they could at that point just fix all watches and make watches too. But on a particular (no pun intended) path of technology maybe it could just be little painters. I may be a little high.
>>
>>18644642

>>

Yeah, 35mm quartz. It’s JDM-only, AFAIK. I think they’re like 180-200 USD or so.
>>
>>18644697
Wow, so they rip their own people off too. Damn. That's a lot of money for what certainly isn't made with sapphire, obviously just comes with a nylon nato strap or rubber, and isn't titanium bronze or anything special. Looks like sandblasted steel. Seiko wouldn't dare serve up alloys would they? That watch should be like $75 USD.
Paying for that name....
>>
>>18644707
FWIW, I think it’s cheaper in Japan and a good chunk of the cost is the importers making money fleecing Westerners.

But yeah, that should be no more than a hundred bucks, and probably a lot less. 100m WR is nice, but beyond that there’s nothing that really sets it apart from a Timex you can get at Walmart.
>>
>>18644712
I was at Walmart today and I looked at their watch section. It was disgusting. Like the worst $10 watches ever. A whole bunch of them. And then under lock and key they had some Timex Expeditions and Weekenders for $30 - $50, and a case of G-shocks and Casios topping off at $120. But the wall o' shitters was a sight to behold. Brands I'd never even heard of. Who buys those watches? They're too expensive to be funny, and way too cheap to take seriously or actually wear. Just lightweight, simple design quartz crap barely held together. With dials that look like paper that could warp in the sun.
>>
>>18644680
Yes. They were a bit over 100 when they were new, plus import taxed cuz JDM. I looked around and they're around 380 on ebay now. Should have invested in cheap quartz Seikos i guess.

I bought two Timex there a couple months ago. Got them for $22 each. It seemed like it had to be an error, because the bigger one is full stainless steel and was priced at $51 on the website. The smaller one weighs nothing and is worth $22. But it's still an Expedition with Indiglo, so it's a damn good watch for the price. Just plastic.

The Casio Royale name is purely because it sounds like Casino Royale, but has nothing to do with the book or movie.

The watch was never actually worn by Bond in any book or movie but the Casio does resemble the Seiko Sports 100 G757 that Bond wore in Octopussy.

Those old Seiko’s are hard to find in good working order these days but new Casios can be had for like 30 bucks.

And, yes, it’s a massive cope. It would be like a whole community of impoverished Bond fans declaring that their Steinhart Sub knockoffs are Bond watches.

The one on the right with the big logo is the rarest and the Weekender in the middle has a hidden logo underneath that shows when you press the Indiglo. At first I thought they were stupid and by the time I had read all about them I was mad that they were sold already. $350 for the set. You have to remember a plain, new Weekender is $50.
Of course 7-11 means nothing to me and they seem kind of tacky, but the scarcity and weird story behind them makes the collector in me just instinctually covet them. I hate that about this hobby. Imagine if I'd bought them. Perhaps an investment type thing, because I'd never wear anything like that anyway and I'd want to keep them pristine and together.
And I'm not even that kind of collector. I don't want watches I don't plan on wearing. Someone warned me it's a degenerate sickness but now I'm deep into it. I need to close my watch store tabs and get some sleep. I've dreamed of watches and even these threads. How fucked is that??

Quick question /nawt/, do you guys treat your watches more like wedding rings or accessories? For me, I wear my watches for pretty much anything (showering, sleeping, sex) and only really take them off when I want to swap them out. I’m thinking I’m in the minority but I don’t keep my phone near my bed so I use my watch for the time when I wake up more often than not. For me they’re just another part of my body.
>>
>>18646215
As soon as I get home I take my watch off. I only ever wear one when I’m leaving the house, though I never leave the house without wearing one.
As for at night, I have an old school alarm clock, so I have neither my watch nor my phone nearby.

Accessories. I change watches 5 times a day. Different one every time I leave the house. Different one every time I walk by the watch room. I keep a solar watch in a windowsill so when I pass it I trade for it. I never ever shower in them (I usually take bubblebaths anyway, which would mean full submersion) or wash dishes with them, but I could with a few if I wanted to I guess. Most I won't chance it with and I won't put leather through that unnecessarily. I own no divers is part of it.
I used to sleep with a watch on when I was a child, but not now. Many of my favorites don't have lume or lights of any kind anyway, at least none that would last more than 30 minutes. A radium watch is on my grail list for sure though. Right now I'm wearing my 36mm Berny titanium which is the lightest real watch I have. I was considering sleeping in it for the hell of it, but there's no reading it in the dark. It won't be distracting or feel bulky like other watches would. I have a Casio F-84W that's super tiny and I could sleep in or get wet. I just never wear it. The sick thing is, often when I get up to go to the bathroom or have a cigarette in the night I'll slip on one of the nightstand watches just to get a little extra watch time in. I discovered I can roll up my Addiesdive in its nato super small. I could carry it in my pocket as a backup. You never know when you'll need a second watch.

Hermès is pretty low-profile in the watch space but they’re doing a lot of things right.
They own their own case and dial factories. They own Vaucher, their movement maker. (Vaucher also supplies movements to Parmigiani Fleurier, Richard Mille and AP)
They’re not trying to copy anyone else’s style or just slap something together from off-the-shelf parts.

I don’t think their men’s watches look particularly gay, but Hermes as a brand is definitely for guys who are just a little bit too concerned with their appearance.
>>
>>18647161
Hermes is also independent, which I think is important. There’s no corporate overlord telling them to make a watch shittier in order to not eat into the market share of another brand in the portfolio. It’s more honest watchmaking.
>>
>>
>>18647271
I kind of disagree there, I think Hermes as a respectable watch brand isn't something that is known to normies in the market for a nice watch, I think the average guy who fancies himself a sophisticated watch guy thinks of it as a fashion brand and would not seriously consider a Hermes if he wanted to cultivate an image of being a sophisticated watch guy. >I think the average guy who fancies himself a sophisticated watch guy
…is, honestly, not the target audience for Hermès. The company wants to keep it that way.

That guy’s taste is pretty mid. His “grail” is a basic Speedmaster. Someday he will upgrade his TAG. He has authoritative-sounding opinions on watches he will never see in real life. His wife’s bag is a Coach that kind of looks like a Louis Vuitton from a distance. He drives a leased C-class. He wears Sauvage but only on special occasions because he doesn’t want to waste it. He lives in perpetual fear of having his “Man card” revoked.

You're really running this thread into the ground with your endless 'hermes' nonsense. I've never heard of the brand. You aren't supplying pictures. Just on and on about how some certain dude is gay for wearing them.
Pretty fucking lame, anon.
