FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
Usage: paste this into Powershell, run.irm https://get.activated.win | iex
>and Office?
Same link, select Ohook option
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

friendly reminder:
if you have windows 10 drivers:
for usability out of the box / gaming: use windows 10 enterprise 22h2 with 3 year esu enabled in mas
for tinkerers and lean os enthusiasts: windows 10 iot enterprise ltsc 2021
if you don't have windows 10 drivers:
for gaming: windows 11 enterprise 25h2 (iot version if you don't have tpm/secure boot/uefi)
for 'stability': windows 11 enterprise iot ltsc 2024 (24h2 will lose mainstream support in october 2026 meaning stupid shit won't get backported after that)
why enterprise? group policy access to regain control

>need windows for work in two weeks

It's a Dell laptop. I tried loading the IRST driver, also checked the BIOS, but it didn't work. I suspect it's something related to the .iso file since the same happens on my desktop. Tried using Ventoy, nothing.
Suggestions? I'm running out of options. Am I eternally soul bound to Linux?

>Step 7 (Recommended): Partition system drive and move user folders to reinstall-proof your data
>By default, your user folder is stored in C:\Users\username, the problem with this is that if your install gets corrupted and you need to reinstall, all of your documents get wiped unless you have a spare computer to plug your drive into to pull the files first. Moving your user folders to a 2nd partition/drive avoids this problem.
Is this necessary? I have multiple computers so I don't think this will be an issue. Is there any other good reason to do this? Does it make moving to a new installation easier or anything? Since I might have to move to a newer 11LTSC I think.
Also the 100GB that it recommends seems quite small?
I don't know if I'm understanding everything surrounding this.

My wife bricked her laptop with bitdefender. Used a self destructing school email for her account.
The data is unrecoverable and she accepts that, but she still needs a functional device for work. I took out the m.2, formatted it, and put it back in with a USB boot. Starts up as expected. No Internet at the account prompt. Whatever, Skip and do limited setup.
Sill no Internet. Doesn't detect the wifi adapter now. Doesn't even show up in the device manager. I took it apart again to check for loose connections but I didn't find anything. Suggestions?

hello CHADnons
I wanted to express gratitude for the guides in the op
I fucking despise windows 11 and windows' niggerlicious tendency to force updates on you no matter how many times you say no or disable the service
I fucking hate their """""feature updates""""" being a weighted coinflip into bricking something about your pc randomly if it feels like it
the audacity of them to at some point remove just normal shut down and give you the options shut down and update or restart and update is infuriating
forgetting and leaving my pc for 10 minutes to find out it used that window to sneak a cheeky update in makes me seethe like nothing else
I hate microSLOP and all its bullshit like you would not believe.
I got a new laptop and it came with SHITdows 11 so it had to be rectified immediately
thank you for helping me install win10 iot correctly and foolproofly (and for the program recommendations) with the rentries, I hadn't even known this ideal version of windows had existed beforehand, but I'm glad it does. it is what I have wanted for a long time. this is a relic of a better era clearly
also, I bought a rog ally recently as well, and I think upgrading to iot w10 from the w11 it ships with helps with its atrocious battery life

thanks man I really am
I couldn't have gotten the laptop at a better time, not just because of the price spikes, but shortly after I bought it, my old, now quite aged and degraded / starting to struggle laptop which I had just finally repaired was bricked because of a FUCKING forced update I can't revert
the brand new keyboard replacement started spazzing out on boot
trying to fix it somehow bricked it further where it wouldn't respond at all on some boots
then trying to fix it further took out the mousepad too
now it is random if either work on boot (usually it does not) and I'm just not optimistic about continuing trying to fix it
what the fuck man
I love my brand new debloated windows 10 laptop that doesn't fuck around with updates
it's so fast and will probably have better longevity without being forcefed crystallised cancer constantly
it's revitalised a spark back for enjoying technology, one less thing to constantly wrangle
I don't think I could have taken it if the old one was all I still had, happening right after a repair I had held off for ages
sorry for the blogpost I just really appreciate everything, this general is a lifesaver

On Windows 10 (Home), how do I disable Defender so MsMpEng.exe will stop chewing up precious RAM and CPU cycles?
This is a low-end machine, and I want to squeeze the performance I can out of it. I would just run something like MX Linux or Mint XFCE but there's some things I use that I don't want to jump through the hoops of getting to work on lnux.

exe? winget? chocolately? scoop?
Which is best long term (and short term)
exe is already annoying me with adding PATH for just these two, so maybe not that unless you have a compelling argument for why
I dont know the differences between the others. AI says scoop though
>>
>>107934524
Personally I use scoop and if the software isn't on scoop I'll try winget. I avoid chocolatey though. If the software I'm trying to get is portable but not on scoop, I'll write my own app manifest and upload it onto my personal scoop repo on GH and install it from there.
>exe
This is an executable file. Could be a manual install or just portable software
>winget
microsoft's package manager
>chocolatey
third party package manager
>scoop
third party package manager, with an emphasis on portable software. Most of the time there won't be a need to install the software from here so it has a smaller footprint. Also the best if you're doing development work.
>PATH
the package managers above will set path for you. Of course if you're installing exe manually then you'll set it manually yourself.

What other tools to use to streamline fresh installs? I know of Ninite and I used Rufus to create the install media, it worked flawlessly.
>>
>>107937207
If you're comfy with the terminal, then scoop and winget for package management.
Ventoy: instead of using Rufus to flash a usb, ventoy is a simple drag-and-drop solution. It allows you to drop an iso file to your flash drive and boot from it. So, rather than using a usb stick to boot to one thing (windows, rescue image, etc), your one usb stick can boot from multiple ISOs.

Yeah, honestly retarded.
I get the technical aspect but my god just implement something in windows to make it work already god dammit big tech is so shit.
Been so many years since we could trade pokemon from gameboy to gameboy with a cable, then they made it wireless with infrared, but Windows never could simply "just work" with simple file sharing the same way. It's absurd.
>>
>>107938924
There's plenty of local sharing tools out there that work over local wireless though, like Localsend or Pairdrop.
Also you can actually use a USB to USB connection to connect two PCs and share shit between them, but you need a specialty USB transfer cable like the ones by the brand Pluggable on Amazon to actually do that.

You can hide copilot and sidebar and shutup10 will disable it. The rest is in the settings for you to customize. I also turn off everything in the new tab page so my Edge looks clean.

A little more than that, I think. Check all services for startup too. And don't use Task Manager, use Autoruns from the Sysinternals Suite, will show all scheduled tasks, services, startup items, etc.. and the changes can be undone (as long as you don't delete them, kek).

Anon, I >>107945137 am the epitome of a Windows fanboy, having made a living supporting Microsoft products for a lil bit (starting with Windows 3.0). Windows 11 reminds me of the Vista launch - a clusterfark of deeply embedded little flaws sprinkled with little droppings of AI enshittification. Underneath it all we know the Windows 10 core is still there. A properly debloated 11 system is as reliable as any W10 install. Whether or not they will ever be able to fix the flaws for 11 or just come out with 12 or whatever with fixes is something we will only know by waiting.
At the same time I'm also a Linux user and have been for many years, it's often the OS of choice in datacenter and lab environments. I have two MacOS devices as well. It's been great watching these OS choices grow and change over time.
My observation has been that ever since XP existed each time MS releases a new version of Windows the same kind of whining and moaning happens about it and then eventually it just fades away. Linux users have always warred over which distro is the Right One, and MacOS users only complain about OS updates when their precio$ hardware gets left behind.

imo the 11 hate won't fade anytime soon because it's tied to something bigger that the OS, AI. As long as MS keeps forcefully pushing AI people will keep hating it.
I agree that a debloated 11 is pretty ok, but right now Windows and MS as a whole are under massive changes in how they develop stuff, and W11 just feels like a warfare zone with how often they add bloat here, nuke stuff there and another thing breaks over there. I still think they'll come to their senses at some point but 11 is pretty much just a testing ground for them.
>>
>>107945408
>11 is pretty much just a testing ground
I get that. I'm running a full retail version on my new build (because /fwt/ told me not to) really mostly because I want to see for myself how it evolves over time.
>also I ran into some driver issues using IoT 10 and 11, anons need to be aware this can happen with newer hardware.
>>
I've noticed that with my work PC, the "committed" RAM is higher than my "actual" RAM. At one point it stayed at around 20GB committed RAM when the "actual" RAM is only 16GB. Is that what sometimes leads to a "bloated" pagefile? Is this a sign that the PC needs more "actual" RAM?
>>

Will drivers for this build work with Win 10 IoT LTSC?
>>
>>
>>107945450
In "committed" the second number is the sum of total RAM and the configured page file(s) sizes. If you have 16GB RAM and it shows something like 20/32GB then you have a 16GB pagefile of which 4GB is in use - or something like that. Memory management is a bear to understand.

What's the point of building a powerful machine if you absolutely want to stay on W10? Nvidia said they'll stop releasing W10 drivers in a year or two and more and more software won't support W10
I'm not saying nobody should use W10 IoT LTSC, it's just that the kind of software/games that actually need powerful modern hardware won't support W10 in a couple of years

I just enabled bitlocker for my new win11 install and was left wondering why it didn't prompt for a passphrase. Well yeah it autodecrypts on boot to make it "seamless" - WELL FUCK. I don't want this, I wanted to encrypt with passphrase so that if someone steals my laptop they can't fucking boot it up and get decrypted drive contents. I always had this issue, I am from Finland but prefer to use US ANSI keyboard because it is so much easier to write with than the Scandinavian layout. Of course for some occasions I needed to have Scandinavian layout too.
My keyboard switcher would switch from US to FI on random basis and I would never understand why. This was on W11 iot LTSC.
The installation wasn't broken.

What would happen if I were to go on diskpart on the command line and run the offline command on my C: drive?
To explain a bit my Windows went boom-boom and now I can only use the command line, I don't have any intention to fix and want to migrate over to Linux. Thing is, Windows got my drive by the balls(hibernating on it which prevents Linux from installing or interacting with the drive in any way) and as far as I can tell the only way to fix this in my situation where I can only use CMD is through diskpart, hence why I want to try this.
...Actually, I just thought of another way. Can't I just wipe the whole drive? Seems obvious, but I don't know if I even can do it through a live-boot of Linux, and I'm worried that the whole hibernation shit might survive a good wipe and require me to reinstall Windows to fix it before getting Linux.
>>
>>
>>107951656
>make a live Linux USB and examine the drive offline.
Yeah, I already have one. I can read but not write to the drive, since Windows is "possessing" it I suppose. I've already tried running the offline command on another drive and found out that it fixes this problem, I'm just wondering if the command would still work properly when I use it on the drive my system is located in, and whether there would be any damage to the drive. I could repair from an install disk but I'd rather not since I've already been planning to switch to Linux for a while.
>>
>>107951674
probably the right thing to try if you really need the data is to disconnect and replace the drive with a clean Windows install. You can then later try to recover the old media. Or use Linux with help at >>>/g/fglt

Maybe I'm coping hard (i am) but windows follows a tick-tock release schedule: good release, bad release, good release etc. So maybe windows 12 isn't going to be an LLM coded crashfest with buggy wifi drivers, and we won't regret upgrading. Maybe.

With MS's current CEO still in the chair, we're gonna be seeing Copilot shoved into shit for the foreseeable future, with 12 most likely being advertised as a fully "agentic" OS. IoT LTSC 2024 will be an island for sane people in the future.
>>
>>107953789
Not to play devil's advocate, but they also shoved cortana in our faces with windows 10 and that was completely dead by the end of it's release cycle. Remember, these interim releases (vista, 8, 11) are basically public experiments to see what can be pushed, people already hate copilot integration so the likelihood that they're going to dig their heels in is extremely unlikely. microsoft is retarded but they're not pants-on-head retarded.

Though they didn't spend tens of billions of dollars on Cortana though, plus all the insider trading garbage the big AI pushers are doing amongst themselves to make it look valuable. Hell, NVIDIA was just caught using a very popular book pirating site downloading as much as they could of it to train their own LLM. As shown, it's fine when they do it because they can pay the large fine and just continue doing it. while probably getting that site shut down in the future because you never put so much attention on these sites like this.

No you can still use Ethernet to connect two PCs together then just set up sharing after Windows gives them static IPs. There's also shit like Localsend and Pairdrop as well which lets you share shit over local wireless.

If you wanna stay on 10 then just use MAS to activate the ESU licenses on your PC to get updates until late 2028. Or if you want updates until 2032 and still be on 10 then use IoT LTSC 2021, which you'll need to clean wipe your current install to do.

some anticheats work on linux, but it's up to the discretion of the individual game to allow it on linux or not. some other ones (kernel anticheats) won't work on linux at all because they install a driver, those won't even work on windows if you have driver signing or secure boot disabled (like to install your own drivers not signed by microsoft). and yes, that does mean such anticheats have complete access to your computer at all times

If you use a ms account and store your bitlocker recovery keys to your ms acc, obviously ms will be forced to comply with governments and give your keys away if you're a suspected criminal by the gov. That isn't the case with local accs, where ms has no way of seeing your rec keys, but in that case just like in case of using LUKS, if you really are a criminal or gov wants your info you will have a bunch of masked gov thugs come into your room, backhand you, choke you out and drag you into a torture room and torture you until you give them the password. The encryption is there to protect you from random street thugs stealing your laptop in McDonalds, not to defend you from governments. Hope that helps.

The iso that you use for installing windows, has a language, like for example en-us iso, so that means windows will always reinstall the en-us keyboard if you uninstall it, but if you for example install using the de-de iso it shouldn't reinstall en-us keyboard ever, or install it in general, unless you're playing a game that asks for it, some games will prompt a en-us keyboard and windows will install it in the background for them. Hope that helps.

Installing linux, because you don't want to move away to W11 from W10, because you like W10 makes no sense, because linux is not W10. But W11 is overall superior, it has better performance in games, better compatibility with software/games, and is optimized for newer hardware. You can use linux but it's essentially a hack solution, like instead of buying an iPhone, you buy a fake phone made by some random basement slaves in India that's called Aeiphon, but it's FOSS or something something. Hope that helps.
>>
>>
>>107964556
Hard to tell, but in case it goes through you are just asking to delete stuff that's not existant so nothing will happen, or it doesn't go through at all. But setting Allow Diagnostic Data to 0 through regedit or gpedit on Home/Pro/Edu/Ent and other builds does cripple diagnostic very hard to the point of ms really seething at it and saying they can't help push new secure boot keys etc to users with diagnostic data set to 0, and there were tests done by german feds that with cooperation of ms saw that there's practically no telemetry after using that and disabling the connected user experiences and telemetry service. Now obviously that's just windows, if you use microsoft edge, or microsoft store apps, or security's cloud features that are oriented around sending samples or hashes to ms for them to work you are still technically sending data. Albeit it's anonymized and not profiled to a specific user with a specific ms account so ms avoids getting sued. Hope that helps.

Leave it as one. I did the split meme and regretted it. Too many things want to install or put files on C:.
My idea was to put only portable installs on D: but lots of things are only semi-portable and will either involve the registry or record their own paths in config somewhere, leading them to break if you ever need to merge the partitions again. And you can't symlink drive letters so I had to hack the DOSDevices registry key to keep the paths the same. Don't make my mistake.
