Don't buy anything other than IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™
Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook)

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Utilitarian design: e.g. mix of old and new ports, stable keyboard layout
>Easy to repair, upgrade (some models) & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals, spare parts easy to obtain
>Usable in cramped quarters thanks to the TrackPoint
>Excellent Linux & *BSD support

My t14 gen 2 still hasn't shipped. Not even a label print on the tracker. Fuck this snow. Expected delivery was supposed to be 26th-29th.

It's not coming from the south, they're in michigan. The ram I ordered the next day already shipped.

I'm really considering this one. i7-13800H + 32gb + 4060 + 1TB nvme + 1440p

It seems like a pretty great deal. Just be safe, FB Marketplace can be weird.

thinkpad t14 gen 3 for $200 a good deal? i5-1235U, 16GB ddr4 w/ open slot, t1tb ssd.

Yes, very good as long as it isn't beat to shit and cracked
>>
>>107970296
alright that makes sense
right now I'm trying to get the p16 gen 6 listed here >>107969154 on fb marketplace but I'm guessing someone else will probably be quicker than me to get a response and buy it and if I can't get that one I'm going to try to get the t14 gen 3 and just remote into my home desktop instead of worrying about a graphics card and save my money
>>
>>107970304
You really don't want a graphics card on your laptop desu. Unless you can plug it in and you need to take it to and from work it just hogs up space. I have a huge msi laptop with a 3060 that just isn't good as a laptop and I only take with me on long trips. The intel xe will be fine and you'll still be able to run plenty of games, just buy another 16gb of ddr4 for it to run in dual channel. If you were wanting it for 3d modeling or game design though it won't be great to not have a gpu.
>>
>>107970350
honestly I don't even want to play games. As long as I can open the editor for unreal/unity and godot, and do basic 3d modeling in maya/blender/houdini, that's fine by me.
>If you were wanting it for 3d modeling or game design though it won't be great to not have a gpu.
that's exactly what I need it for. Nothing crazy, I'm not going to set it down and start a 16k render and then get up and come back later, but like basic stuff in the editor etc.
>>
>>107970477
Consider a p series with a quatro if you don't get the 4060
>>
>>107970485
in that case the best I see is either p14s gen 2 1165G7 48gb for $450 or Gen2 1135G7 2.4Ghz 16GB for $275, both with a T500
>>
>>107970485
Oh I forgot they renamed them to things like RTX A2000/4000/5000 and just RTX 2000/3000/4000 etc. But look into those ones, they're the quadro but newer after they dropped that naming convention. They're made for modeling not gaming

oh, yeah I've used those before. my current one is a library p14s gen 5 with an rtx 400 ada, but I have to turn it in every 60 days and replace it for a new one which is a pain, plus there's so much endpoint software on it monitoring me that I can't fuck around with. I like the small 35Watt graphics cards they put in laptops that only really cover low level stuff. I've done some work on planes and long flights or on holiday away from my PC a number of times.

Are there any guides to installing Libreboot/Canoeboot on an X200 Tablet? Every guide I look at only covers the regular X200 and the BIOS chip is in a different location on the tablet.

Might be a long shot does anyone know if is there any mobo of the X270 that accepts both NFC and smart card reader.

>>
>>107981146
Buy a brand spanking new unit with the parts you want and take them out.
The xx20 are so old there's no one making parts for them but the chinks. For batteries it's even worse since originals are likely to have degraded in all that time.

I have an X13 Gen2 and I am fucking SICK of Windows 11 and MS general bullshit. I have never owned any Apply products but I am really tempted to buy a Macbook Air. Maybe I would just be satisfied with the same laptop with a different OS?

What Linux distribution should I install? I have Debian w/ LXQT on my desktop and I'm happy with it there. All my important files are in a single veracrypt container so it's easy to move between systems/installs.
>>
>>107990800
>What Linux distribution should I install? I have Debian w/ LXQT on my desktop and I'm happy with it there.
Why change then? Debian w/LXQT would be great on your X13G2. If you want to get adventurous, try a different DE. KDE or Gnome would run fine, assuming you're not stuck with 8gb RAM (both would run, but it'd be tight). Or try a really light, minimal keyboard-centric tiling WM. Go with testing or Sid repos if you want newer packages. Only do Arch if you hate yourself and/or want to relearn a bunch of shit.

Possible first time user here. Should I pull the trigger on a refurbished T490 with i5 8365U, 500gb ssd and 16gb RAM? 339 Eurobucks in "good" condition (tech flawless, outside some slight traces of being pre-owned)

look for an amd t14 gen 1 or 2. Shouldn't be hard to find an intel one at that price but the amd ones are better/more efficient (and usually slightly more expensive)
>>
>>107993494
LMAO, no it's a terrible deal.
Most "refurbished" stuff is just a brown person in a grimy cellar turning it on once and maybe giving it an additional wipedown.
At this price point you should be looking for a T14 G2/G3.

i have an x230 sitting on a shelf gathering dust, do people still want these? can i just throw it on ebay and get like $100?

also, why don't new laptops come with big batteries? why do all the 12" and 14" have these piddly 50Wh batteries? Isn't battery life a big selling point for laptops? Why not stick 90Wh's in them again? Do any manufacturers stick big batteries in their 12-14" laptops?

Notebook selling points are so very weird and retarded. For some reason normalfags don't give a toss about it, it seems. Maybe it has to do with weight. They have such retarded requirements for notebooks and get caught up on bullshit all the time.

I hate rubberized coatings, and enjoy aluminum constructed laptops like the Elitebook/Probook series.

However, it seems that when you hand giganigger gorilla users an aluminum chassis in enterprise they just skateboard with it and bend all corners/scrape all the paint off.

I've got a $150 budget, looking for an 8th gen or better cpu with a decent screen, will mostly be using it for car diagnostic stuff and occasional light gaming in bed

Should I just get a T480 and sand it if it gets sticky on me?

Just get a desktop environment you like the look of and stick to it (maybe change themes if you really want to). Anon already mentioned xfce but you can also try MATE and cinnamon. All look sort of like windows, one version of the other. Closest to win 7 would be cinnamon.

You mean your 15.6'' screen? You must be doing something wrong cause I use hyprland on my x230 with its 12.5'' screen and it's great. In fact I think tiling window managers are even more useful for smaller screens because of how they optimize screen size.
Were you trying to do everything on a single workspace? That does work better on a larger screen but you can just use more workspaces and jump back and fourth, granted that's not a hyprland or twm exclusive thing but still, perfectly usable on smaller screens and I'd say they're better for that than floating window managers.

I am looking for an affordable 200$ school computer that can ideally last me through the lecture - ideally, the best battery life I can get for that price. My tasks will be writing documents, web browsing, and programming. An anon recommended me a T480 in another thread. Right now, my school computer is an E7440, however, the battery is fucked and won't hold a charge, and it doesn't make sense to buy a new battery for a 12 year old machine. I don't want to use a chink battery, so I am looking for a laptop where new batteries are easily attainable. I am aware that the new Thinkpads are far more locked down compared to what they used to be. How do newer Dell Latitudes compare in that respect? Did Dell Latitudes become cucked in the same way? What are the pros of newer Dell Latitudes compared to their Thinkpad counterparts? What would a T480 Dell Latitude equivalent look like?

>>108008138
Get a T14 any gen if you want a Lenovo. Unless you have a line on a real cheap T480, T14 is what you seek. Most of the T14's I see are the same price or slightly cheaper than the T480's I see out there and they are newer. Autists are putting some kind of e waste collectors premium on T480's, but they are good laptops.

There are a lot of 7420 and 5420 Latitudes surplus out there now. They are good too. No clit mouse but they are solid.

All the above mentioned are easy to change out the battery. Literally 6 or 8 small screws, and popping the baseplate off, unhooking and unscrewing the old battery, and screwing the new battery in. New batteries can be had for $20-$30. They may be generic brand but so far all the ones I've tried have been perfect.

Something else about the L's to know - chassis flex can cause the ram chips to slightly disconnect, especially when moving them/grabbing by the corner. Put some little rubber pads at the top corners under the ram chips and reseat them. Make sure they latch down but they should be TIGHT. It's a fairly well known issue/fix.

Just saying - if you get one that acts fucky you might be able to jew them down on the price and fix it for basically free. Or get a 2nd or 3rd unit for yourself and have good spare parts or sell it on yourself for more than you paid for it.

It doesn't take the old caps and drifts a little more often but other than that it's as comfy as the old Synaptics ones and much better than old ALPS. You'll probably have to tinker with the settings if you're switching from another model.

You need these types of clips to attach to the chip because its a surface mounted chip unlike the regular x200 with hinges so a regular soic clip wont have a way to "grab" the feet of the chip. Then everything else is just the same.

I saw the T14 Gen5 AMDs are on clearance on the lenovo website. Could get a Ryzen 7 and 32GB RAM for like 800 swiss cheesebux. This is mostly for use as a workstation at the desk and gaming when I am supposed to working. Think it's a good purchase? The RAM from them direct is cheaper than elsewhere. This will replace a T15 G1 with an MX330.

Other option would be a Macbook or even a mac mini m4 but I intend to be using Linux and playing some pre-2022 games.

Ask if it's been refurbished and about the battery life. Doesn't sound like a bad deal since 32gb/1tb but it's still some money so....

Usually you should be able to return it no questions asked within 30 days so in general you could pull the trigger. Depends on how safe you wanna play it.

What's exactly wrong with the P52S? It's either faded or otherwise dismissed in most Thinkpad discussions. I just got one and it works a treat. What am I missing?
>>
Just like this guy >>108028961 is considering, I bought a t14 gen 5 with the intel 125u and 64gb ram for under 900 euros. it replaces my good old x220. and you know what, this laptop is really great. good screen, using linux and just browsing the web the fan is at 0 rpm, and finally the battery and ram is completely replaceable again.

what I don't like is the keyboard, it feels "hard" to type on, like you're tapping against a wall. also the wifi card is soldered, and the power connector (usb-c) is soldered.

about the power connector, I don't know how I feel about it, because I just replaced the power connector of my x220 a few weeks ago, because the original one didn't work anymore. so I ordered a new one on amazon, and replaced it, and everything was working, until a few days ago, when my laptop stopped charging and the charging port smelled burnt. opened the laptop and when I inserted the power cable, there was a flash at the power connector. so I was able to replace it, nice, but I don't really trust these things anymore... at least I can still charge it via a docking station, because it uses a port at the bottom.

anyway, I don't want to go back to an old thinkpad. yes, the keyboard is worse, but everything else is just so much better.

>>
>>108037731
professional dealer or private seller? Has it been refurbished or what? How's the battery?
350 can be an okay-ish price for those stats if someone checked that thing and possibly replaced parts. But it's not a good price in general.
But on the other hand: I don't really mind 50 bucks or or less if I get one that gives me a good gut feeling.
>>
>>108037764
dealer, marked "refurbished" but probably more accurate to just say inspected
battery only stated to be in working condition, but i could ask what percent it's at; let me do so

i'm ultimately of the same thinking, this is essentially 300 bucks for what appears to be a decent one
>>
>>108037731
>Ryzen 7 - best CPU for Gen 1
>16gb RAM - okay in general but only "good" when those 16 are soldered in. If it's 8+8 then it's meh
>512gb SSD - good

Since it has the 4750u and is "mint" I consider 350 not too high. But if I were you I'd check the following things:
1) RAM: Are we talking about 16gb soldered so you still got a free slot or is it 8gb soldered and the slot already filled with 8g? The former is obviously better
2) What kind of seller are we talking about? Keep in mind that professionals usually demand a higher price but if it's a pro with a good reputation I'd rather buy from him than from some private dude
>>
>>108037802
Inspected is much better than nothing. No dealer wants a bad reputation or a very visible 1-star rating because today there's just too many alternatives. So he checks the stuff and you get something that at least won't shit the bed 14 days later.

>this is essentially 300 bucks for what appears to be a decent one
Exactly. If it was a private seller 350 would be too much but here you get an inspected Gen 1 and the dealer wants to make some money too, which is absolutely okay by me.

If you ask him about the battery you might as well ask him what anon here said: >>108038378
>Are we talking about 16gb soldered so you still got a free slot or is it 8gb soldered and the slot already filled with 8g
I mean if push came to shove you could just put a 32GB RAM unit into the slot and call it a day...
>>
>>108033860
>what now?
Buy a new one and since you'll already open it up you might as well combine your battery shopping with RAM shopping and a good internal cleaning.
Make sure to put on some good music, put the computer on a towel (no more hunting for lost screws on the floor) and prepare a refreshing beverage.
And POST PICTURES of the job. Not just for the sake of this General but for other Anons who might need to do it too

A stripped screw has come close to ruining my life. Were you trying to remove the superglue with a lighter or something? You're supposed to use acetone...
>>
>>108039296
>>108039253
Here's the basic rules Anons:
1) NEVER use power tools to remove the tiny little screws of electronic devices
2) Get a high quality set of smol form factor screwdrivers or bits. Be aware that asian companies don't always use PH/PZ heads but may use JIS - looks the same, is something different
3) Always make sure to fit the right screwdriver. Don't just grab one that seemingly fits.
4) No superglue. Thanks to a physical phenomenon called capillary effect the glue will get between the screw and the rest and will make your problems even worse.

Here's some solutions:
1) put a piece of rubber band between screw and screwdriver
2) Put maximum linear pressure onto the screwdriver and screw but twist as gentle as possible
3) Use a minimal larger screwdriver or a flathead and slightly(!!!) hammer it into the stripped head.
4) Make capillary effect your bitch by applying a tiny(!!!!!!!!) droplet of penetrating oil and let it sit for a day. Then repeat.
5) If everything else fails get a 1.5 0r 2.0mm drill and drill out the head. Use a very good tiny wrech to grab the rest of the screw after you've removed all other screws and the floor plate.
>>
>>108039253

>>
>>108039790
I always use a piece of simple masking tape sticky side up with a scribble of the thing I'm repairing (e.g. the underside of a laptop). So I put the screws in the right positions on the tape. I think this saved my ass several times.
Oh and I always remove screws with a cotton towel underneath. That way screws and other microscopic parts don't roll away and get lost
>>
>>108039296
"exploded" might have been the wrong word, my bad. It's more like the tube was under pressure and the cap was tight, so when I opened it, it squirted and burst everywhere

That's usually my go-to, but it really didn't work this time. they were really fucked. no idea what the hell the last owner did to them. Unfortunately the power tool with a metal precision drill was the only thing that worked in the end. The problem was that the screws were on the bottom shell (x230) and they're all really deep set.

Neat, I was hoping you'd post an update.

Are they doing them one at a time as a live auction or are they doing the silent auction thing or what?

Which one(s) are you trying to go for?

The windows license thing is nbd (go visit /fwt/ and read the sticky re: massgrave). Or use Linux.

Charger thing is nbd, they're all going to use usb-c and surely you have one already. You don't need an """official""" charger.

The SSD thing kinda sucks. Prices on those are elevated these days. Assuming you don't have a spare lying around, budget another $$ for that.

Factor all this into your total cost of ownership.

Word to the wise, if you decide to Libreboot it, make sure you have an SPI programmer on hand (CH341A is fine, pomono clips are retarded). It's fairly straightforward to flash it (even with their retarded documentation), but there's always the risk of bricking it.
