>tl;dr hexgears q3 pro and vxe dragonfly r1 pro ordered
FUCK, I hate having analysis paralysis so much, I can't help it since I am a turbo poorfag, and I have already been rudely reminded that this is not a poorfag friendly hobby.
I ended up ordering the TKL model, I believe I can get used to no numpad. I noticed there are plenty of similar priced options for USD based countries, but when switching Ali to my region, this one ends up being the cheapest option for everything it offers by a considerable margin.
The endless amount of nuances in this hobby is absolutely crazy. But from what I have been researching and listening from youtube videos I managed to round down to plastic body, gasket mount and tactile (or linear) switches for the most fitting build to my use case/tastes.
But it seems that I'm getting a very budget version of what seems to be high end autism stuff, so I hope I won't regret it as my first mechanical keyboard since there are absolutely 0 reviews about this one.
>>
>>108031652
The happy news is that beyond a metal case or a specific case design there really isn't that much true quality variance between a low-end keyboard and an autism deluxe keyboard that doesn't come down to top-mount vs. gasket-mount, switch plate material, and the amount of case noise-dampening installed, the Chinese have done an amazing job in making these things very accessible and higher quality has rendered a few older things like switch films obsolete
>>
>>108031652
You do realize keyboards are better and cheaper now? Don't fret so much and definitely don't listen to retards. Forget the nuances and other things, just buy and forget about it.

So I've been testing the DK1-TKL to make sure it's working correctly and the 1.2mm pcb is really confusing me. It sounds bizarrely awful, especially the spacebar, and the PCB has these legs that don't seem to work with any of the supplied gaskets so I'm not sure what they're for. (Checked with the vendor's discord, I think they were supposed to come with little sock gaskets but these were cancelled at some point between the Chinese GB and the US, maybe due to causing shorts?)

Anyone who has built it with the 1.2mm pcb seems to have done it with the foams. Obviously I wasn't paying attention when I ordered this thing because I didn't realize the 1.2 was covered in meme cuts, otherwise I would have just bought a second 1.6mm pcb.

The color is very far off the renders but that's fine at this price point.

One of the stab cutouts in the aluminum plate is upside down lmao. So I'll need to use a plate mount stab for that key.

Hoping the 1.6mm sounds a lot better. Beginning to think I... should have bought Geon lol.

Moral of the story is that a competent designer matters waaay more than specs on paper. I'll wait and see how the 1.6mm sounds before I pass final judgment on this board, but the 1.2mm should never have been made. Unbelievably, shockingly bad.

There was a "Smurve" keyboard just recently whose big gimmick was having a curved PCB and curved switch plate, curved mounting mechanism, mimicking how Model Ms and Model Fs look in general. And of course it's a TKL because we somehow don't have enough fucking TKLs on the market.

Honestly I wonder how it is because the curve on the Model M mostly works to give its keycaps their per row angle. Since most MX caps have the angle baked into them I bet this is pretty weird.
>>
>>108036892
Model M/F's keycaps are effectively Cherry profile, I bet it would probably only really work very well with that or OEM profile. SA or MT3 might collapse in on themselves like a neutron star.

Still shocked by how bad that DK1-TKL sounds with the 1.2mm pcb, and I'm gonna have to open up the aluminum plate's stab holes with a file tomorrow because even if I put a plate mount stab on the one upside-down stab hole (lmfao) the other ones still don't fit over perfectly normal pcb mount stabs. What a disaster.

(Some sets I could give a "no" no matter what, some I could go out on a limb and say "yes" without knowing the plans for them, but this set I would have to know)
>>
>>108037867
It was more of a long-term idea, pairing this with some future polycarbonate board and trying out clicky switches. I wouldn't give it a thought if not for the low price, might be the only time I get an opportunity to try out SA profile caps.
>>
*opportunity to try out SA profile caps without paying full price.
>>
>>108037883
$104 aint exactly a steal. How far off the mark are the $20 clones on aliexpress really? I have some and they're not terrible.
>>
>>108037883
FWIW there's so many SA clones floating around now you could try it out pretty easily for cheap, recommend Kiiboom polycarbonate caps here for that: https://www.kiiboom.com/products/kiiboom-transparent-pc-keycaps?variant=44252806807796
>>108037906
Build quality aside, the profile is accurate on Aliexpress clones.
>>
>>108037910
Oh, right, those keycaps say "ASA", but they're also filthy liars. Those Kiiboom keycaps are as tall as some MT3 keycaps I have laying around and those fuckers are as tall as SA if not a little bit taller on average.
>>
>>108037835
this is why whenever any anon wants to buy a Rainy75 I always try to point them to the special MechanicalKeyboards version that comes with a non-flex-cut PCB:
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/products/mk-x-wobkey-rainy-75-pro-aluminum-75-hotswap-wireless-a-rgb-non-flex-cut-keyboard

Sounds a million times better defoamed than all the other models, yet noobs don't understand the importance of this one obscure little data point at all
>>
Speaking of MechanicalKeyboards who's gonna be the first to try their new double-shot PBT WoB set? Apparently made by Leopold?
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/products/mkl-keycap-set-classic-black-wob

I mean it definitely isn't GMK but who else is making properly kitted double shot PBT WoB around $60 ($40 for TKL base)? I guess Keyreative KAP is close to that.
>>
>>108038251
I only give a shit about matt3o spherical profiles at this point. MT3 has just been king for me. I'm hoping for a MTNU set not manufactured by GMK because I just don't see the value. I'm not like someone who only buys chinkshit clones on ali. I just want a middle ground that doesn't fucking rob me blind for some pieces of plastic.

I got a GMK set on sale for $50 this christmas just to see what the hype was about and I just don't get it. I'm not paying $150+ for this shit.
>>
>>108038251
If it's made by Leopold, that is that it's the same tooling used on their own keyboards, then it's probably pretty good.

That being said I don't really have any excuse to buy any keycap sets atm

Perfect storm of being an R3 control guy (need 1.5 super or code) AND having symmetry autism. It's niche enough that maybe they shouldn't do it, but I can easily imagine this guy existing.
>>
>>108038313
It's me. I'm that guy. Although R4 Supers are enough for me.

I cannot tell you how much R3 Control but no R4 Supers bothers me in various kits. DCS kits are especially bad about this.

Keychron.

Stock foam configurations are usually "thocky", has two tactile options, ISO layouts, not terribly expensive at around $100.

Hard to think of other options that fit your description. Your set of requirements is a bit niche.

Their "banana" switches are the most tactile, but people complain about double-presses. If you're ok with making some alterations to the QMK firmware to extend the debounce timing they might be ok. Otherwise brown might be safer.

it's not about work and home. it's about being able to use the shitty default at any given point in time. an alice is still close enough to a regular ansi layout that switching between the two is pretty much effortless. columnar stagger split is not anything like ansi
>>
>>108055064
I dunno, I can still use a row staggered board if need be even though I've been using split boards for over 10 years now.

i tried to get a mechanical keyboard and they cancelled my order and now its out of stock
now i'll never get one
I didnt even want this color but it was all they had left
nowhere else has these for a reasonable price
>>
>>108055425
Good. You ordered the wrong keyboard.

There is only one not-shit variant of the Rainy75. It's the special version that was made for MechanicalKeyboards, which has a 1.6mm thick PCB with no flex cuts. It's still available.
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/products/mk-x-wobkey-rainy-75-pro-aluminum-75-hotswap-wireless-a-rgb-non-flex-cut-keyboard

Thin flex-cut PCBs sound like garbage, they make any keyboard sound cheap and they feel gross. Thick normal PCBs sound good and normal, and they feel solid.
>>
Recommendations for good hotswap or custom plastic keyboards, preferably full-size? Currently looking at the 8bitdo full-size.

This is what a flex-cut pcb Rainy75 is like when you take out the load-bearing foam.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1HELCwFRIY&t=250s
Someone must have thought this would be funny. That's the only way I can explain this.
>>
For those not yet woke on the flex cut question (the FCQ), here is a pretty even-handed video with side-by-side comparison:

>>
>>108055464
>>108055612
It's funny how ai03's decision to put a flex cut in the Polaris was immediately copied by everyone despite him immediately regretting it and his build guide giving instructions on how to patch it up with tape to improve the sound.
>>
>>108055660
This dynamic is visible in every discipline in the world. The handful of people who really do things are copied thoughtlessly, both their successes and their blunders equally, by middling strivers and hucksters who cannot tell the difference, to impress or to profit from cattle who don't even notice

What's the consensus on good wrist wrests? I never see them discussed here
>>
>>108055464
Well great, an extra 30 but I guess it's not like I have any other options now anyway. And they have black. Probably should have asked if anyone had any other suggestions but I already ordered it.
>>
>>108056086
Wrists rests in general are a scam, use a rolled towel if you absolutely need one
>>
>>108056112
I have another suggestion. Spend another $50 to add their new WoB double-shot PBT keycaps by Leopold to the order right now >>108038251

Email them begging to merge the orders please before it ships

(You won't because newbies always balk at keycap prices, even reasonable ones, I know)

Also add the tiny Filco horsehair brush which is a lifechanging little accessory when you have black keycaps
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/products/filco-frozen-llama-keyboard-cleaning-brush
>>
>>108056086
They can be attractive but I'm just so used to not using them at this point. I think they tend to encourage you to rest your wrist too much, but since I end up resting my wrists sometimes anyway they might have saved me a little strain sometimes.

With some very tall boards I think a wrist wrest would help a lot. But I try to buy boards with very low front heights, generally.

I see no purpose in using one.

I'm currently using some old ass hyper-x with cooling foam; I've probably developed some terrible wrist posture habits but it's definitely more comfortable than resting my wrists on the desk while I'm playing a game that requires my left hand to be glued to wasd; probably doesn't help that I'm using a cork pad. Aesthetically it looks like ass.

When are we getting Copilot addon for the common sets like GMK WoB, Beige, Dolch? This is becoming a standard system key but afaik no IC yet for what should be a pretty straightforward group buy with a big market

Been using the Leopold FC900RBT for years and very happy with it but I recently acquired a second apartment and need to build a desktop rig there. Shill me a LESS CLICKY mech keeb than the Leopold because thats about the only drawback it has, also the keyboard needs on-demand bluetooth switching as I use multiple computers at once very often.
>>
>>108057002
Less clicky? Are you using MX Blues? Do you prefer clickies only or are you talking about switching to linears?
>>
>>108057019
current switches are MX cherry
>>
>>108057024
lol
I'm guessing they're MX Blues
for less clicky switches, look up Gateron Melodics, or Lanes
there's also the Kailh Box White V2s
these are literally it for clickies
everything else is tactile territory or straight trash
get individual switch packs for these three and see what satisfies you
>>
keygem fag here. after 18months of waiting I just happened to find a perfect cycle7 on ebay for 180€ even in my desired colour. >>108057621
What plate did it come with?
>>
>>108059849
One PC plate. No extra PCB, no nothing, just the Viton and extra screws. Prev owner likely never built in it. No matter, I have a soldered build ready to go after I've once again removed the damned WK blockers.
>>
>>108060067
>after I've once again removed the damned WK blockers.
What? You're going to take off the blockers on the F1? Anon plz
>>
>>108060075
I need my Win key.
>>
>>108060098
Then get a keyboard with a win key slot! Don't disfigure an existing one. Look, the F1 is good, but it isn't *that* good.

Before you disfigure it, at least be certain you're going to be happy with your build. What if you cut off the blockers only to realize you don't care for the keyboard? Then your resale value is shit and you're stuck with a brick.

Especially on a PC plate. I do hope you like a thin keyboard sound.

Oh, I don't leave my keyboards lying around or resell them. They're all built different. Besides, I made my first F1 WKL as I simply couldn't get used to working without using the Win key shortcuts.
Current one has a mix of OG unlubed BCPs on the alphas and lubed Kailh BCPs elsewhere, it feels uniquely satisfying on the PP plate here, and it's something I couldn't get on my other boards.
>>
I'll be using this build on the new one, it's from the previous owner of my first F1. PC just doesn't feel or sound right on this keyboard anyway.

>>
>>108056086
I prefer foam rests that are thick enough to allow my wrists to be straight while typing, but it depends on how tall the front height of my keyboard is. Sometimes I prefer a wooden rest that's a little shorter.

Shout to the anon who told me not to use TRRS. I didn't listen and fried the first MCU, luckily I had a few spares. It was stupid, since I already had a keyboard with TRRS for months, but I still pulled the cable. Now the build is done, it was a lot of fun.

Does anyone make a keyboard laid out like this?
All the editing keys are duplicated on the numpad anyway, and you can't type special characters like — and × on the number row, so this seems like a much more practical alternative to a TKL.
I'm aware of 1800/96% and I have one, but I don't like the layout compromises necessary to squeeze the arguably redundant editing keys onto a reduced-width board.
>>
Never get a chink keyboard without VIA support, I regret getting a Hi75C Pro and having to hunt down the software in fucking baidu.

Absolutely not, $230 or so for one singular keycap set made me weep, and I still wish it came in a sculpted profile like MTNU, ASA or just outright SA or MT3.

It does give me an opportunity to color-comparison it to a clone set I bought on Aliexpress, though. Interestingly the gray-and-blue modifiers have a greenish tinge to their coloring.
>>
>>108064121
The clone's alphanumerics are basically BOW, not beige or cream with blue. They look right in some lightings, but looking directly at them or with bright light gives up the ruse.
>>
>>108064129
And the clone's burgundy spacebar is a more saturated red than the original.

My lessons from buying a GMK keycap set:
>GMK is an overrated keycap manufacturer
>Their primary virtue is, however, that they're willing to do basically fucking anything you want with them that's within their means to do
>I'm impressed by the transparent window Caps Lock and Num Lock keys you can buy with GMK DMG's battery light novelties
>GMK keycaps cost waaaaaaay too much
>>
You know what I haven’t seen so far. Hobbyist with their TGRs, Singas, and Keycults complaining that they don’t think GMKs are worth it and would rather use clones or keycaps from unknown manufacturers.
>>
>>108064589
I think GMK basically falling off the map for "the keyboard hobby" is a lighter version of this in practice, there isn't the sheer fanatic furor for GMK that there was in previous years. You have your pick of the litter for keycap sets unless you want something EXTREMELY specific and a clone doesn't exist for it.
