Try considering the following: If you make the character bright/mostly well lit, then make the background darker. If you make the character dark/mostly backlit, then try making the background bright.
The existing values are fine, just nothing special.

The color of your background will affect your perception of what is the optimal value contrast.
Try shading with a 127/127/127 background or 0/0/0 background or fully painted background and see how it affects the character/object in the foreground value-use wise.
