This stirs a question. Ive seen a lot of 03s with the cutout than I would've assumed given that the thing was (never?) fielded. Just how many 1903s got the treatment that inevitably amounted to just a slight lightening of the weight.
If I had bigthink.jpg I would post it but I dont so here's something random

They’re prized because they’re rare. If they hadn’t been Order 66’d they’d be less warmly held in the public collecting eye. Perhaps of equal renown to K31 drop-in caliber conversion kits with everyone having them just complaining about wobbly mags and sourcing ammo. The best place for them, honestly, is as a memory.

>Just how many 1903s got the treatment that
Bruce Canfield says at least 101,775. The problem is that Mk.I production was coincidental with standard M1903 production at Springfield. 163,332 receivers were serialized between the first Mk.I recorded and the last Mk.I recorded, but not all were Mk.I configuration.
>thing was (never?) fielded.
About 3,000 Mk.I rifles and devices spent nearly a decade in the Panama Canal Zone. That’s as close as they came to any real service.
>>64686272
They’re prized because they’re cool, even if an impractical solution. Most crazy ideas like that never even hit prototype stage, much less mass production.

Finally got out and shot my M96 FSR that I got almost 2 months ago, as well as a couple other guns that I had acquired this fall and not shot yet. A combination of busy weekends or shit weather has led to me not going to the range for almost 3 months.
I enjoy the sights, but I believe this rifle has seen many more rounds through it than my regular M96. The trigger on my M96 is much smoother, and it might be more accurate. I’ll have to pit them against each other sometime.

Finish restoring my Kar98b (just needs a properly sized band spring and bayonet lug pin), take all of my surps out shooting more, and reload more for my more obscure calibers (.50-70 Gov't, 11mm Mauser, .30-40 Krag).

I don’t really have my sights set on any guns. I’m more of an opportunistic buyer, so if I see something that I wouldn’t mind having, and the price is fair, then I may buy it, but I’ve kind of stopped chasing guns for now.
Now I’m kind of focused on bolstering my reloading components and ammo supply. Right now, prices seem to have bottomed out for almost everything, so we have about 2 years to stock up before prices start to go back up during the election year. I feel like I have a good supply of a lot of my ammo and reloading stuff, enough stuff to allow me to shoot for well over a decade in most calibers, but I’d like more.

I have what I care about surp wise, which is a Garand (in 308) and an SKS. I am left handed and had a revelation that I really don't enjoy paying $2 a round to bumble fuck working a bolt poking holes in paper 100 yards away. I have moved onto collecting AKs and FALs.
>>64696938
You absolutely can, I was considering getting a 1912-61 Chilean mauser, but even then I am still having to deal with a bolt. If I ever get the itch for a bolt gun again I'll probably get a LH 18" Ruger Scout.
>>
>>64707840
>.308 Garand and an SKS
The short bolt Garand is a weirdo rifle and the SKS is a trash-fire POS built for 3 rubles each.
AKs are all garbage, but at least they're on the top of Soviet dumpster pile.
FALs are another thing altogether. Stick with those and you'll turn out okay.
Also, have you ever considered a left-handed bolt? The price for a new one is stupid, but the used market isn't entirely retarded.

>Would you fags buy a 1903a3 in a sporter stock for 450 dollarydoos?
That really depends on how extensively it's been sporterized. In 2012 I bought mine sporterized for $250. Handguard and bands were gone and the stock was shortened and sanded. Bubba had ground the triangular "ears" of the rear sight off so he didn't hurt his widdle hand. At the time there was still a lot of NOS US rifle parts floating around for relatively cheap. The next year I got a stock/handguard and most of the furniture for $90. Found a complete rear sight assembly in a $30 box full of various receiver sights I got at an auction. Missing stacking swivel and screw was another ~$10 or so. So for ~$400 or so in 2014 dollars I had pic related.
>>
>>64711988
>>64712033
The Barrel action is good, front and rear sights, bolt, barrel length, etc not been fucked with. Only the furniture needs to be replaced. But that said the repro furniture and bands would cost me around $300, plus the 450 plus another 50 in fees and theft would put it in $800 pretty low for 1903a3 overall. Honestly I'm about to send it, if nobody injects, and add another rifle to American Collection.
Plus our state's largest gunshow is happening in like 3 weeks so I might find a stock set for cheaper.

It is also nice knowing the ammo I am using is basically guaranteed to not be corossive. I am aware very very early in 7.62x51's history there were a few batches made of it. But some overrun Lake City will be fine. I would like to avoid having to deal with the headache of having to clean my guns asap after a range trip when possible. So making the switch to 7.62N just makes the most sense for me. Also being into AKs I have seen what happened to 5.45 and it is not too far of a stretch to think it can happen to any other caliber that has a foreign source.

Why pour hot water? Are you trying to make your life more difficult?
Just dip the pads at the tip of the cleaning rod into boiling water and run it through the barrel. Then clean as normal with your preferred lubricant/corrosion inhibitor.
Also, a helpful tip for you and others:
Be super careful with those mauser front H bands. Carelessly tapping on them could warp them. Need to take a brass rod/punch and lightly tap on the flats at the front of the band and not the rear. See attached pic. Tap on the marked area. Make sure you alternate left/right top/bottom.

This sounds better but will that still get all the salts out though? How many wet patches would be needed before reverting to normal brush/solvent/oil?
Appreciate the tip, but it's too late for my mauser. My front band is dinged up from when I was trying to get it apart the first time during cosmoline removal.
>>

>My front band is dinged up from when I was trying to get it apart the first time during cosmoline removal
Literally same. When I got my first yugo mauser, I spent half an hour with a hair dryer, a wooden block, and a mallet trying to get the fucker off
>>
>>
>>
>>64718307
You only need to hit the bore once or twice with the hot water pads. Corrosive salts dissolve pretty fast. Then switch to normal cleaning.
Personally, I use two bore snakes. One snake to do the heavy cleaning with a 3-inch piece wet with hot water and another section wet with solvent. The other bore snake for lighter cleaning/oiling with Corrosion X.
I'll also put pads on the bore snake bristles for a tighter grab.
It sounds like a lot, but it saves so much time.
>>64718322
Could be worse, there was a guy years back on the k98k forum that fucked up the front band on a $4k rifle for literally no reason.

No problem.
Not sure if you've already done this, but the best advice for rifle disassembly is getting a proper hollow-ground bit set. Normal tools will absolutely knurl the fuck out of fasteners. There are so many rifles that I look at these days and it's sad to see the screws all fucked up from someone using a regular screwdriver.
Wheeler Engineering will often have sales. Their 36-piece screwdriver set is worth every cent.

Well first, stop using gunbroker to drive your decision making. 2nd its 100% dependent on your local market, how much money you, have much youre willing to spend. And, perhaps most importantly, how many times youre willing to walk from a high price, in hopes of finding it for lower. On rare things that above point can be pretty rough.
So its not much of a "whats a good price I should seek as a newb" but more so an assessment of your current situation and what youre after.
>>
>>64721306
>>64722529
You can use gunbroker to figure out prices, you just need to filter for completed auctions.

I got a Ljungman with a cracked and shellac'd stock (twin receiver tang cracks) and I am strongly considering replacing the stock with a walnut one. There's that 1 guy who took a Hakim and fit an M14e2 stock to it with a cheesegrater handguard and outside of the pistol grip, I lowkey wanna do the same to my Ljungman. Maybe a bakelite type grip, a diopter or a scout mount, and a bipod so I can use MG25 mags and turn it into a weird DMR sorta thing.

Shooter's kit won't be good unless you do a detailed visual inspection and/or NDT. Hairline cracks can be hard to detect.
The rifle spent 75 years getting pounded. Just because you're shooting it now with reduced gas, doesn't mean that it won't damage the rifle further. Once metal is overstressed, it's significantly weakened.
G41s make better shooters, honestly.

Guess I’m asking you fellas. This is a commercial Remington shotgun. Easily pre 60s. They didn’t solder barrels to barrel extensions back then did they? I’m hesitant to MAP the barrel up past 600°F to find out. I don’t think it is.

I've seen a few local listings of people re-selling Enfields that RTI imported. Also check to make sure it doesn't have any "DP"/Drill Purpose marked parts anywhere on the bolt/receiver.
Max Arms has cans of .303 HXP which is apparently on bandoliers, in clips, non-corrosive, and the brass is reloadable. I only got one can but am tempted to stack another while it's still sub $1/rd.

My G43 has a crack on the hand guard that runs about the length of it but only appears to be on the surface and doesn’t go through to the other side. You guys think it’s still fine to shoot? It already has what looks like epoxy filled into parts of the crack but i can for sure feel it spread when I squeeze the hand guard lightly but I can barely see it spread with my eyes

So let me get this straight, finn mosins were chambered in 53r but due to the need to use soviet ammo, finnish barrels were made for 54r and only the bullet shape in 53r is different. This means that 53r and 54r ammo is completely interchangeable.
retardsplain finnish mosin ammo for me.
>>
>>
>>64758032
Not really interchangeable in the way you might think
53r is .308
54r is .311
Older Finnish Mosin’s use the .308 bullet and when they adopted the D166 is when they switched to a .311 bullet
D barrel Mosin’s are Mosin’s that had a surplus barrel chambered for .308 reamed out to fit the D166 cartridge which is why you see M39’s marked with a D. M39’s stopped getting marked with a D barrel after a certain point it was completely standard for them to be chambered for D166 thus having no need to show the barrel had been converted

It is a desportized Kar98b. It was a matching rifle that had the original stock absolutely butchered beyond repair but the metal was thankfully left untouched. The finish is just a very dark blue. Here's a few before pics.

Here's the original stock. Bubba had an absolute field day on it. He cut the butt down to fit a recoil pad on the end, removed the bolt takedown disc, plugged the slot for the sling and disc, cut it down past the original rear band, cut the handguard to match, used a new barrel band and crushed the handguard to fit it, all finished by sanding and a sloppy varnish. And it hurts because it was the original matching stock.

Thanks anon. Bubba always seems to butcher the rare ones as not a whole lot of Kar98bs were made to begin with and finding 98b parts in specific is a pain.
>Did you get new barrel band springs or were they in the white already?
The front band spring is off of an Argentine 1909. I found the barrel bands online on a forum, used a Gewehr 98 buttplate, and a generic Mauser 98 bayonet lug though I might have to swap it out for another as the hole for the lug pin doesn't quite line up with the hole in the stock. The biggest pain left to do is trimming a rear band spring to match the slot in the stock for it, the slot is shorter than a standard 98 spring so I need to trim and relieve the spring to fit it and the rear band.

>make Ruskie Mosins as good as Finnish ones?
Nigger, the Finns basically just kept the receivers and the bolts, and even those underwent strict quality control and repair/modification procedures before reaching the bare minimum standards of quality the Finns considered acceptable.
The stocks, barrels, sights, etc, on Finnish Mosins were all new, because the russian parts were trash.
Thinking you can make your russnigger Mosin anywhere near "as good as" a Finnish one by just shimming the barrel is on the same degree of retarded delusion as thinking you can make your Chrysler PT Cruiser "as good as" a Lamborghini by bolting on a $200 cold air intake kit from eBay.

If you have a war-time 91/30, take a look at your front sight post. More likely than not, it's going to be noticeably off-center for it to hit at 100m.
Two major issues with wartime 91/30 barrels
>eccentric bores
As they drill the bore, it isn't square on the barrel axis. Literally crooked.
>bent barrels
During the process of drilling out the bore, barrels occasionally bend, more so with dull tooling. Every other manufacturer in the world had provisions for measuring that bend and removing it. Except the Russians. It was faster to just adjust the front sight.

At that point, you may as well take it to its logical conclusion. Reid Coffield from Shotgun News did this one almost 20 years ago and it's still the most beautiful Mosin sporter there is

>>64765844
>Except the Russians. It was faster to just adjust the front sight.
I think the Yugoslavs are guilty of that as well, I've seen so many M48s with their front sight drifted to the maximum one side or the other
>>
>>64766657
I think that with Yugoslavia, like the USSR, the refurbishment program for obsolete arms eventually becomes just typical socialist make-work to keep people "employed" rather than to produce a quality product. Thus it doesn't matter so much how well the 30+ years obsolete rifle actually performs as a weapon.

When I had a broomhandle I used a repro stock/holster, and never got any shit for it. Having said that the official letter is in such terrible resolution it's kind of sketchy. I wish I still had that fucking gun.

Bought a CAI Mas 36 and now the bolt won't close. How fucked am I? Should I try to sell it or keep it? I'm not totally heart broken over the conversion since it will save money on ammo but I do know that there's a lot of issues with them.

Right, someone here told me I couldn't so I did anyway. Bought one of the 2A1 barred actions off Sarco and rebuilt it. A cool guy hooked me up with parts and 3 bolts with timed heads to test fit. All 3 actually had well within acceptable headspace just above no-go at slightly different degrees. Took the pick of the litter, happening to be Australian, that had the best lug contact. An assload of research shows that India used the same steel in the 2A1 as the rest of the commonwealth did with the regular no1 mk3. Some 2A1s turned out to actually be british No1 Mk3 refurbs with scrubbed but faint marks. Test fired a blank 7.62 NATO to make sure it banged at the firing pin depth it's at and all is swell. Actual shooting next weekend.

The Bulgarian is 1909 FEG production, converted to 8x56R and refurb-maching. The Hungarian is 1916 FEG production, still 8x50R, post-WW1 unit-marked to a Czech infantry battalion. Probably Spanish Civil War surplus. Neither are import-marked.
