Finally got out and shot my M96 FSR that I got almost 2 months ago, as well as a couple other guns that I had acquired this fall and not shot yet. A combination of busy weekends or shit weather has led to me not going to the range for almost 3 months.

I enjoy the sights, but I believe this rifle has seen many more rounds through it than my regular M96. The trigger on my M96 is much smoother, and it might be more accurate. I’ll have to pit them against each other sometime.

I handled one of those Carcano carbines rechambered in 8mm Mauser last weekend at a shop, it was $325. Had a capital "S" stamped on the receiver ring. Any of you guys own one? If so, how's it shoot? I've heard the majority of them were part of some post-war Egyptian Army contracts and not actually handed out to the Volkssturm.

I don’t really have my sights set on any guns. I’m more of an opportunistic buyer, so if I see something that I wouldn’t mind having, and the price is fair, then I may buy it, but I’ve kind of stopped chasing guns for now.

Now I’m kind of focused on bolstering my reloading components and ammo supply. Right now, prices seem to have bottomed out for almost everything, so we have about 2 years to stock up before prices start to go back up during the election year. I feel like I have a good supply of a lot of my ammo and reloading stuff, enough stuff to allow me to shoot for well over a decade in most calibers, but I’d like more.

That really depends on how extensively it's been sporterized. In 2012 I bought mine sporterized for $250. Handguard and bands were gone and the stock was shortened and sanded. Bubba had ground the triangular "ears" of the rear sight off so he didn't hurt his widdle hand. At the time there was still a lot of NOS US rifle parts floating around for relatively cheap. The next year I got a stock/handguard and most of the furniture for $90. Found a complete rear sight assembly in a $30 box full of various receiver sights I got at an auction. Missing stacking swivel and screw was another ~$10 or so. So for ~$400 or so in 2014 dollars I had pic related.

The Barrel action is good, front and rear sights, bolt, barrel length, etc not been fucked with. Only the furniture needs to be replaced. But that said the repro furniture and bands would cost me around $300, plus the 450 plus another 50 in fees and theft would put it in $800 pretty low for 1903a3 overall. I think? I completely disassembled mine to clean it and it still sways a big. Mine also didn't come with the tiny screw that goes into the top of the stock bracket(?) so I had to find a tiny screw to put in.

It is also nice knowing the ammo I am using is basically guaranteed to not be corossive. I am aware very very early in 7.62x51's history there were a few batches made of it. But some overrun Lake City will be fine. I would like to avoid having to deal with the headache of having to clean my guns asap after a range trip when possible. Why pour hot water? Are you trying to make your life more difficult?
Just dip the pads at the tip of the cleaning rod into boiling water and run it through the barrel. Then clean as normal with your preferred lubricant/corrosion inhibitor.


Also, a helpful tip for you and others:
Be super careful with those mauser front H bands. Carelessly tapping on them could warp them. Need to take a brass rod/punch and lightly tap on the flats at the front of the band and not the rear. See attached pic. Tap on the marked area. Make sure you alternate left/right top/bottom.

You only need to hit the bore once or twice with the hot water pads. Corrosive salts dissolve pretty fast. Then switch to normal cleaning.

Personally, I use two bore snakes. One snake to do the heavy cleaning with a 3-inch piece wet with hot water and another section wet with solvent. The other bore snake for lighter cleaning/oiling with Corrosion X.
I'll also put pads on the bore snake bristles for a tighter grab.
It sounds like a lot, but it saves so much time.

Not sure if you've already done this, but the best advice for rifle disassembly is getting a proper hollow-ground bit set. Normal tools will absolutely knurl the fuck out of fasteners. There are so many rifles that I look at these days and it's sad to see the screws all fucked up from someone using a regular screwdriver.
Wheeler Engineering will often have sales. Their 36-piece screwdriver set is worth every cent.

I got a Ljungman with a cracked and shellac'd stock (twin receiver tang cracks) and I am strongly considering replacing the stock with a walnut one. There's that 1 guy who took a Hakim and fit an M14e2 stock to it with a cheesegrater handguard and outside of the pistol grip, I lowkey wanna do the same to my Ljungman. Shooter's kit won't be good unless you do a detailed visual inspection and/or NDT. Hairline cracks can be hard to detect.
The rifle spent 75 years getting pounded. Just because you're shooting it now with reduced gas, doesn't mean that it won't damage the rifle further. Once metal is overstressed, it's significantly weakened.

Sorry I'm not a Lee-Autist so I can't tell you much you probably don't already know. Avoid anything with an "IO Inc" (RTI) import stamp. I've seen a few local listings of people re-selling Enfields that RTI imported. Also check to make sure it doesn't have any "DP"/Drill Purpose marked parts anywhere on the bolt/receiver.
Max Arms has cans of .303 HXP which is apparently on bandoliers, in clips, non-corrosive, and the brass is reloadable. I only got one can but am tempted to stack another while it's still sub $1/rd.

What’s your guys opinion on this?
My G43 has a crack on the hand guard that runs about the length of it but only appears to be on the surface and doesn’t go through to the other side. You guys think it’s still fine to shoot? It already has what looks like epoxy filled into parts of the crack but i can for sure feel it spread when I squeeze the hand guard lightly but I can barely see it spread with my eyes

So let me get this straight, finn mosins were chambered in 53r but due to the need to use soviet ammo, finnish barrels were made for 54r and only the bullet shape in 53r is different. This means that 53r and 54r ammo is completely interchangeable.

Older Finnish Mosin’s use the .308 bullet and when they adopted the D166 is when they switched to a .311 bullet
D barrel Mosin’s are Mosin’s that had a surplus barrel chambered for .308 reamed out to fit the D166 cartridge which is why you see M39’s marked with a D. M39’s stopped getting marked with a D barrel after a certain point it was completely standard for them to be chambered for D166 thus having no need to show the barrel had been converted

It is a desportized Kar98b. It was a matching rifle that had the original stock absolutely butchered beyond repair but the metal was thankfully left untouched. The finish is just a very dark blue. Here's a few before pics.

Here's the original stock. Bubba had an absolute field day on it. He cut the butt down to fit a recoil pad on the end, removed the bolt takedown disc, plugged the slot for the sling and disc, cut it down past the original rear band, cut the handguard to match, used a new barrel band and crushed the handguard to fit it, all finished by sanding and a sloppy varnish. And it hurts because it was the original matching stock.

Thanks anon. Bubba always seems to butcher the rare ones as not a whole lot of Kar98bs were made to begin with and finding 98b parts in specific is a pain.

The front band spring is off of an Argentine 1909. I found the barrel bands online on a forum, used a Gewehr 98 buttplate, and a generic Mauser 98 bayonet lug though I might have to swap it out for another as the hole for the lug pin doesn't quite line up with the hole in the stock. The biggest pain left to do is trimming a rear band spring to match the slot in the stock for it, the slot is shorter than a standard 98 spring so I need to trim and relieve the spring to fit it and the rear band.

Nigger, the Finns basically just kept the receivers and the bolts, and even those underwent strict quality control and repair/modification procedures before reaching the bare minimum standards of quality the Finns considered acceptable.
The stocks, barrels, sights, etc, on Finnish Mosins were all new, because the russian parts were trash.
Thinking you can make your russnigger Mosin anywhere near "as good as" a Finnish one by just shimming the barrel is on the same degree of retarded delusion as thinking you can make your Chrysler PT Cruiser "as good as" a Lamborghini by bolting on a $200 cold air intake kit from eBay.

If you have a war-time 91/30, take a look at your front sight post. More likely than not, it's going to be noticeably off-center for it to hit at 100m.
Two major issues with wartime 91/30 barrels
>eccentric bores
As they drill the bore, it isn't square on the barrel axis. Literally crooked.
>bent barrels
During the process of drilling out the bore, barrels occasionally bend, more so with dull tooling. Every other manufacturer in the world had provisions for measuring that bend and removing it. Except the Russians. It was faster to just adjust the front sight.

I think that with Yugoslavia, like the USSR, the refurbishment program for obsolete arms eventually becomes just typical socialist make-work to keep people "employed" rather than to produce a quality product. Thus it doesn't matter so much how well the 30+ years obsolete rifle actually performs as a weapon.
