Erotic fantasy you say? I had the displeasure of reading this shit which is romantasy for horny men.
>‘Her lips were flame and frost upon my skin, kissing me in all the places mortal girls feared to tread. I kissed her just the same, sinking between her thighs as she plunged me into her mouth, and the taste of her near drove me mad. We moved slow in the dark, smothering our sighs in each other’s secrets until there was nothing but the inevitable, nothing but the fire awaiting us both. She clawed and she pleaded “Fuck me, fuck me’ and as I slipped into her, slow and deep and hard, there was nothing else in all the world that mattered. No divinity but the want in her eyes. No eternity in hell I wouldn’t have gladly suffered if I could have lived just one more moment of the heaven inside her.

>"Unwise," Stonny drawled. "I never step lightly."
Is that a hecking Yeats reference in my epic fantasy series?Based if true.
Also while I'm on the topic, how are you meant to pronounce Stonny? Is it like a "stony" shore or Johnny starting with an St or something else entirely

Not per se, but it does scratch the itch for particularly sheltered women who can't work up the nerve to read anything more explicit. Romantasy is smutty by the standards of sheltered suburban housewives.

Romantasy isn't even particularly lewd. People get the wrong idea about it because they don't understand male vs female standards for porn. Men are extremely visual and physical, women are more emotional. For women it's less about graphically describing sex acts and anatomy, and more about the scenario and the internal experience of either or both participants. Men who pick up a book described as "basically porn for women" will be very disappointed at the lack of explicit sexual content and how half the book is just build up for a sexual encounter that is 90% foreplay (by male standards).

My ex was really in love with this.
The female MC is born with a condition that makes her a masochist. Like, it's a physical thing. This inevitably brings her into all manner of bondage situations and political intrigue, but she is just a girl who needs to find herself. Except when she finds a man who sees her as a person and not a sex toy or political tool she cucks him regularly because that's her nature

Is the entire point of Serwe just a flex that Bakker can right a stupid as fuck, irrelevant annoying dumb character with the most surface level of perspectives ever since every other character so far, even the whore is mildly mentally competent and interesting on their own?

According to this Harlan Ellison interview with Robin Williams, L. Ron Hubbard asked in a Hydra Club meeting (club full of scifi authors; he also mentions in the interview Sprague de Camp being autistic about humor in one of the meetings) how to make money, and Lester Del Rey gave him the idea to start a religion.

Ever since the introduction of Serwe the writing has felt fucking meandering. How many times am I going to get an entire chapter focused on nothing but the thoughts of a woman about another man impreganating her or having sex with her, as something vaguely relevant and "important" happens in the background

As the other anon said, "court intrigue" is basically just weaponized gossip, something very familiar to any female over the age of, say, 11 years old. It's all about prying into other people's business and uncovering secrets which are always scandalous and/or obscene instead of just boring, contemptible, or pathetic. Why was that one courtier sneaking around with the pretty maid? Was he banging her? No it was actually a part of a huge conspiracy to kidnap the royal heir! But you don't find that out until the heroine has successfully sleuthed her way through a dozen mundane rumors first.

Yes, in my opinion. It leads into many many stories within its 'verse. Imagine a Jovian-class (Jupiter) sized Great Ship circumnavigating the galaxy as a cruise vessel, accepting several alien species and allowing them their own habitats--all with the personality and intrigue of those who run the Ship.
There are three versions of Marrow: a short fiction, a novel, and a retcon short. I would suggest reading the novel and if you enjoy the author's voice then continue into its sequel.

Sister Alice and Waging Good by pic related
Trials of Magic and Courage by Ty Johnston--which I owe a review of the latter.
I mistakenly thought Waging Good was part of the Sister Alice stories.
The Sister Alice stories are about hyper-advanced uber godhumans who can terraform and shape planets and systems to their whim but still focuses upon the characterization.
Waging Good--a standalone short story--involved a woman carrying a parasite within her womb, to destroy her home habitat on the Farside of the moon, as a form of revenge for her "friends" pulling a prank and sending her to desolated Earth.

Brother Perfect, the next Sister Alice story.

I plan to work through the five Sister Alice stories, and to finish the other stories in this Johnston collection, of which I have read two so far.

Reading Stephen Donaldson's short story collection Daughter of Regals and Other Tales. The title story has the female mc almost get RAPED and I couldn't take it seriously because of all the conversation around Donaldson's books on /sffg/ revolving around rape.
Also reading Shadowmarch by Tad Williams. Tad is always super easy to read and entertaining, but so far it's been pretty generic as far as fantasy goes.

How would one go about finding objective opinions about a book like this?
Chuds here will be racist and libs on Reddit and Goodreads will glaze over the author's skin colour.
>>
>>
>>25057593
You don't, even if he published under a pseudonym of a White male it would be panned and if he had a white female pseudonym he would have been glazed. Welcome to modern publishing, it matters more who you are than what you do or how you write.
Which makes almost all reviews useless and ignorable.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>25057600
Everyone cares about skin color the only people that don't are majority white communities, which are becoming more exceedingly rare as white birth rates drop and as majority white areas are labeled as racist and there are active private, public, and government campaigns to diversify them.
If this era has 1 lesson to teach, it's that everyone cares about race and the people who don't are dying out.

this
the ancient Greeks were the same way, they cared more about culture than about pedigree, only to be out-competed by the Romans, a far dumber and less creative but more persistent people, who cared about pedigree. The biggest irony is that since Greek culture was so open that it eventually consumed Rome when it became an Empire but that was literally after 1,500 years of Roman occupation. In many cases the people who professed to love the Greeks would also be people who the Greeks would never grant full citizenship too.

I actually read the whole thing because I thought it would go somewhere interesting and I like vampire stories. The entire thing was a slog and it really felt, since the very start, that the author wrote every single bit of it hoping and dreaming of a netflix adaptation. I really mean this, it's how every character and even feel like, like he just wanted that juicy check. The erotic parts were terrible to read through, very terrible. And what's worse, the author, in his thirst for adaptation money, not only added gay characters, which is fine, or at least whatever, but insisted on writing sex scenes for them while also being painfully straight. He wrote gay sex worse than a horny 14 yo asian fujo on Ao3.
Still, I persevered, I thought that the format of the book, a reverse interview with the vampire, was also a device that aimed at adaptation, but it was enjoyable and felt like a fresh excuse to constantly change PoVs, which can be awkward or just feel like the author is edging you like in Red Rising, where the PoV changes just so you can't finish any event on anybody and have to keep playing narrative hopscotch. This is supposedly to add a feeling of movement or momentum to the story but it usually just annoys me. So I wanted to see where it went.
It went to shit, is where it went. I have never read an actually published novel where the ending is not only a disappointment in every conceivable way, but also manages to insult your intelligence in just as many ways. I felt cheated out of my time alive on this earth. Like some cosmically evil being seeking the entropic end of the universe through bad literature.
For those that careAs I said, the framing device is a vampire interviewing the mc and his sister. At the end the story "catches up" with the time of the interview where it's revealed that it was all a lie by them in order to trick the vampire; every character death and conflict and stake and emotion you experienced is undone. Every side character that died was actually alive and wonderful and the good guys win in the course of 10 pages and that's that. This happens 50-ish pages from the end of the last book. Like the author watched Rashomon for the first time. The interviewing vampire that you read for 3 books and not only befriended by the main character, but didn't even kill a lot of people like the bad guys has a throwaway line about how he probably killed like hundreds anyways, so they imprison him for eternity anyways. But hey, you get lesbian princesses who will rule the whole world kissing over the sunrise in the final scene.
>>
>>
>>25057671
Well written and my thoughts exactly. I sort of semi enjoyed it going through the series. It wasn't brilliant, but it was what it was. The stakes felt real with characters dying and being maimed and as you said, the ending just made everything ridiculous. The unreliable narrator part of it made me look at everything in the the trilogy in a negative way. Did anything even happen that way if the ending was just a complete 180 of what we were already told? They may as well have said it was all a dream because that would have felt less insulting.

Any fantasy or sci-fi in a non depressive setting? The opposite of stuff like Mistborn with all the mist and darkness, or Dune with the whole sand and moisture thing.
For example, something like the Fable games or the Mass Effect 1 citadel
>>
>>

>>
>>
>>25057821
if youre OK with comedy try Discworld or even his other series with Baxter (The Long Earth). Older sci-fi have sorta cartoonish settings that arent that dark like The Mote in God's Eye.
Ive noticed British authors tend to be less dark/depressing than others, so Purgatory Mount is interesting (Adam Roberts) and also The Algebrist by Iain Banks.
In terms of fantasy id recommend The Riftwar Cycle by Feist and maybe the Drenai series by David Gemmell. And of course The Hobbit, if you havent read it.

Abercrombie is a hack writer with a dudebro attitude. He lazily constructs a setting with cliches and has no understanding of military organization or operations but still insists on writing extensively about such things in his books. Near as I can tell he does no research for anything he writes, and goes off of "vibes". His setting "feels medievaly" is the best way I can describe it. It's basically just window dressing for character drama, except he quickly reveals he has but one trick up his sleeve to keep the story going and that is to continuously beat down his characters with misery and tragedy.
He is a stupid person's idea of "gritty" fantasy.
>>
>>
>>25057713
I read the first Powdermage book but I lost interest in the series because I felt the author revealed too much of the mystery of the setting early on and there was nothing keeping me invested in it. I didn't want to find out more about anything, the initial conflict was devoid of interesting characters, and from what I recall the protagonist was rather pathetic.

This entire sequence genuinely had me so gripped I was almost shaking
And then its followed after by the brilliant useless writing of Esemenet being groped by Celebrating Inrithi, and then punching some retard in the face whos entire writing suggesting an imposing tallness and strength (should have included retardation) made pointless.
I've just accepted at this point, that I must weather retarded sex, or rape, when reading this character, as that is all she is. Something a slave not just to circumstance or herself. But a slave to condition.
>>
>>25057821
IDK, Lyonesse? It's not a happy story really, but the setting isn't inherently dark or depressing. It's got fairy tale castles, good wizards, bad wizards, fairies (who are equal parts whimsical and terrifying) and other fantastical creatures and beings.
I'd generally recommend Lyonesse by Jack Vance in general for somebody exploring fantasy. It's worth reading at least once.
>>
>>25057713
Powder Mage, but only because of how bad First Law is. Powder Mage is a cotton candy series with no substance. It's fun, it's enjoyable, it's incredibly lightweight. The anon that described it as POV-slop was right on the money--each chapter is from a different POV and ends on a cliffhanger to trick you into reading further. The author clearly has no military experience or knowledge because the amount of insubordination that occurs and is just ignored starts to get ridiculous as the book goes on.
>>
>>25057713
I like First Law, it's entertaining in the "turn our brain off and enjoy the ride" sort of way. Haven't read Powder Mage. A lot of people seem really negative on Abercrombie but I think that's just because he's too popular for obnoxious contrarians to enjoy.

Seriously I have to ask. What is the point of sequences of dialogue like this?
What depth am I being presented with? What am I learning or understanding deeper about Esemenet or her world? To prove im not sexist, though I hate women. I also questioned this at first regarding Kellhus' interludes with the Pragma and repeating "The Logos has no beginning and no end" but at the very least. It served some perspective and insight into something that cant truly be understood. The experience of a non experiencer.
But with Esemenet everything is so base, so on the surface so immediate, almost by ironic definition. She makes everything simple by virtue of her branding. Every action somebody takes against her, is no more complex, than taking advantage of her, or her enjoying somebody taking advantage of her. Every interaction with her is reduced to how shes treated. Everything is filtered through that lense.
She has "character" that brings out no character
Whereas Kellhus has no "character" that brings out perspectives, understanding, judgements, truths, that would never be seen, or contexualized without his interaction and probing.
Before Cnauir interacted with Kellhus, I found him interesting, but too simple a slave to his traditions and passions. But with Kellhus hes something more. Kellhus brings more out of him.
With Achaiman and Esemenet what do I learn from Achaiman? That he loves and wants to be loved? All I ever learn is the "passions" which are so simple it can be summarized as every other character is summarized
"Proyas the Pieous but Skeptical"
"Conphas the Self Assured"
"Xerius the Paranoid"
I just dont like this stupid fucking character. She wasted so much fucking time and space on the screen crying over how victimized she is, and how much she needs to feel loved and safe, and part of something more than a whore, as she goes and has random sex in the market.
I dont fucking care. Its not interesting. None of the characters are really that interesting or deep, but they enhance eachother through interaction with one another and how their perspectives appraise one another.
With Esemenet, you already know another through her perspective before she even interacts with them. Because it will always be framed through her victimhood and weakness. How is that deep? How is that interesting?

>>

>>
>>25058919
To be fair I dont think any of the characters are too deep. Theyre all, in some way or another, completely carried by passions theyre either barely aware of, or completely a slave to. Ironically Cnauir is probably the most introspective, then followed by Achaiman. The more interesting aspect to me, is how each character reveals more about another character, and through that characters reveals, more about the world and circumstances. Wanting to see everything unraveled is what keeps me going, not the characters in and of themselves for the reasons I laid out.
And yes. I know and understand to some degree that "thats the point" that the characters are slaves to their circumstances. I'm just explaining the precursor to why Esmenet is annoying to me.
Like Serwe, shes not really smart enough, or interesting enough, or powerful enough to "reveal" much about other characters or the world, and the one character she can do that for (Achaiman) her relationship with, is so simple and on its face that its boring. The most interesting thing about her I remember reading in the first book, was the small inkling of self awareness to realize she didnt really want Achaiman. She wanted his life.
After that, shes been completely uninteresting.
Because of this, my theory for why she exists in such prominence in this story, can only be for some stupid Deus Ex Machina purpose, further down the line of the books, where she causes something important to happen thats well beyond her established abilities and/or intelligence.
Its why ive been sort of wary of criticizing her, because a character that barely enhances the story right now, and wastes pages of words with her simple ponderances, and flourishes of sex with random dudes in random alleyways (what the fuck was that about anyway? is there some important story beat im missing there?) because its very obvious that if shes taking up this many pages, shes going to be forced to be important in some annoying way.

>>
>>

>>25058985
Maybe in the No-God she'll serve some actual purpose, but after reading the series she never amounted to anything but a POV for other characters and Achamian's motivation for remaining within the story. I think Bakker somehow wanted us to feel sympathy for an evil slut who had thoughts aboutPimping out her 6 year old daughter to men while she watched

From two sentences earlier:
>Eleäzaras’s mouth had become very dry. He tried to swallow. “You must stay with us, of course, so that we can … interview you, further.”
>The man’s face had become the very picture of dread. “I’m af-afraid that won’t be possible, y-your Eminence. I’m expected back at the Imperial Court.”
>Eleäzaras clasped his hands to conceal the tremors. “You work for the Scarlet Spires, now, Skalateas. Your contract with House Ikurei is dissolved.”
Eleäzaras pretty much said they're going to torture the shit out of him to get it all. And as the Scarlet Spires have pretty much all the money in the world, and the Mysunsai are greedy fucks there is no reason to 'interview' him when they could just pay him, meaning the main reason for the interview is getting rid of him, as by their nature he'd sell the information to anyone else as well.
And if you forgot why Eleäzaras is so triggered by the Cishaurim reread the Achamian Geshrunni talk from the last book.

Instead? I don't think it would effect readability that much, would it? Though I guess he wrote this before computers as well so maybe that was just too much effort and a waste of effort to retype it on a type writer? I don't know.

I think it's part of the choice that he uses the hobbits as mediator to the high fantasy part of the world. Tolkien wants to ease the reader into the world, not force you into it.

I only finished the first book because I have trouble stopping a book once I've started. I felt absolutely no desire to read the second or third book because of the language used in the first. "fuck" was written literally on every page of the first book.
It was extremely cringy use of language, and repeatedly took me out of the book and setting. Glad I didn't bother reading anymore. Looks like it would have been a massive waste of time and very gay.

>Pride of Chanur
Human captured as a slave by ugly aliens escapes to catgirl aliens. War ensues
>Foreigner
Humans are a minority on a strange planet. Locals are 7 feet tall midnight black skinned humanoids who eat poison. MC is an ambassador to them. War ensues but also sex.
>40.000 in Gehenna
Colonizers sent on purpose to a nightmare planet to fail and die, end up forging a surprising bond. War, you guessed it, ensues.
>Downbelow Station
Aliens are secondary characters but essential to the plot. Crisis ensues.

Bro which woman’s fantasy are you reading? Upon skimming random pages of these books at the bookstore or at my girlfriend’s house it takes me approximately 15 seconds to find descriptions of throbbing cocks, soaking cunts, sub/dom shit, savage fucking, etc. You’re either lying or haven’t looked hard enough (which isn’t even that hard)

Declare is a great Cold War spy novel that also happens to be a great urban fantasy novel. It does this really neat thing where the fantasy bits and fictional characters are slotted into the gaps in the historical record while the historical stuff that is well documented is portrayed exactly as it really happened, so historical characters like eg Kim Philby are portrayed as having a secret double life as sorcerers without directly contradicting what we know about their movements and activities in real life. It's my favorite Powers novel and the one I would recommend the most strongly. The Anubis Gates is a little rough because he was a new author and still learning how to write, but it's still fun. The Stress of Her Regard has some great bits but is overall kind of tedious unless you happen to really like Lord Byron and his scene. In general I would recommend Powers, but sometimes he gets really invested in stuff(like the Romantic poets or professional poker) that you might not find interesting, so check the synopsis of his books and skip the ones that appear to focus on boring subjects.

Reed's Great Ship series. Like the other suggested series, it is a long-ass universe. There's a few novels but at a quick count on isfd, there are ~45 stories (mostly shorts) within all of it. >Then I had to endure Achamian + Esmenet chapters, and I started to worry, because Achamian is a pathetic loser who cries and goes insane without sex with Esmenet, who is important, and so Esmenet becomes important and gets more chapters by association
>Then Achamian, Esmenet, and Serwe (and Kellhus) all came together, and I fell to my knees in defeat. Even if Serwe dies, the exponential annoyingness of all 3 characters whining about their shallow feelings, is still a great hurdle to overcome
Its a tragedy I cant skip any chapters.

I find this interesting. Im sure this has to be intended, because it just fits too well.
But she talks about running away with Achamian from all their problems, and he talks about all the reasons he cant, which essentially can all boil down to him being a sorcerer.
But see, the thing is. Is Achamian was likely anything but a Sorcerer, hed never meet Esmenet, but even if we assume they met. She likely wouldn't fall in love with him. Because she said it herself in the first book, what she desires from Achamian, more than his actual self, is his life.
Shes assuming that some generic relationship where she could just run away with some dude she loves exist, when that love is so very conditioned by the very thing she wants them to "run away from". By the very thing that keeps them together.
Honestly, I forgot the details. But why didnt Esmenet want to stop fucking other men again, and just go to Momemn with Achamian again? I feel like thats the only thing im missing right now to explain this silly relationship.

maybe I just don’t get it, but it reads like it’s a criticism of reading fantasy (and probably sci-fi too) exclusively, but it’s okay as long as it’s part of a balanced, larger “diet”
Extending it to other things, it’d be like if your only exposure to films were capeshit, only exposure to television was reality tv, or only exposure to vidya was something like the yearly CoD release
In terms of age, I’d say something like 16-24, based on watching some of my friends deteriorate into trannies that care more about magic systems and shit than actual storytelling

How the fuck did this work anyway? i just chalked up their multiple comebacks to same vague strategy, because the way the entire way was written was so fucking hazy and imprecise like a dream, more about the passing of events, rather than the progression of "causality".
They mention the "marsh" a couple of time so I just assumed thats why the Fanim were able to be pushed back randomly sometimes.
Then theres the Cishaurim encounter where everybody "goes down" except for some random young knight who seemingly teleports (the writing really makes it seem that way, as they give no explanation for how he surprised the fanim mages, unless im supposed to be assume his chorae just made him invisble) and kills one of them, and because of their astonishment at that, theyre too late to react to the rest of the knights and...
I just dont know. The only thing that made sense to me, was the end, because reinforcements obviously came to beat on a retreating enemy that was already worn down.

It is the same shit as Babel but tailor made to be commercial slop and extended to have the necessary length. You could cut two thirds of this book and nothing would be lost. She sold the rights to make it a TV series before the launch date.
It has the same tropes as Babel where she endlessly complains about academia and how a sheltered life inside a UK university is difficult and tiresome. She also shoehorns feminism and how the protag was assaulted and of course there is a romance plot.
Trash book by a shit author.

I just read Going Clear and yeah it's totally and completely obvious that (at the very least at the beginning) it started out as little more than a grift on Hubbard's part. But by the end of his life I think he was a true believer, he drank his own Kool-Aid and genuinely started to believe in Xenu and the OT levels and Earth being a prison planet called Teegeeack where prisoners were thrown into volcanoes then blown up by atomic bombs by the dark forces of psychiatry.
Genuinely a fascinating read, highly recommended if you're at all interested in Scientology and cults

for my lit/brotha who recommended void star, I finished it, and I'm onto south of the border, west of the sun (which I have already read a while ago, but given your recommendation I will reread it).
Some closing thoughts about Void Star - I really enjoyed the prose, like you said it is fairly similar in execution and in spirit to Gibson's cyberpunk. Some of the character ideas I thought were interesting, namely Akemi being hired as an art project to just harvest her memories. Similarly, the concept of an art installation that is memories from someone without knowledge at the time that anyone will see them in the future, that is a really neat idea. Like first kisses, family deaths, etc. it would be super interesting to walk though. I was not entirely convinced by the idea that putting a memory chip in someone's head would make them materially different from a normal human, such that they could somehow interface with an AI in an easier way... Even if it was more processing power, I just don't see how it matters since the AI would need to slow itself down so much to talk to a human, enhanced or not, so the degree of slowdown difference would be so tiny that what difference does it make.. Also you could just make an AI to act as an intermediary interpreting signals?
I liked the concept of an AI holding human minds within itself to filter ideas and situations to better interpret human interactions/the real world, that's a cool a novel concept that I haven't heard before. Kern's character was fun but it felt like a pretty disjointed book from Irina's, his backstory felt a lot like The Diamond Age without actually becoming a sophisticated character (so he ended up feeling a bit like a robot). Still his time in hong kong, taipei, and thailand was interesting, I just didn't care once he got to the island. I think they could have cut all of the fat of philip, the aegean island section, and the Brazilian character. Also, with removing philip they should just cut the last 40 pages of the book, basically just end it once Irina disappears.

yeah, i read ahead, and that seems to be what was repeated by somebody when explaining to Eleazaras how the Cishaurim faltered. Still seems silly, but like i said, that war progressed like a dream so its hard to criticize.
i just have a new question now...where the fuck did the imperial army come from to end the hinnerith (or whatever that city is called) siege? they just seemingly came from within the city, which means or implies, a sizable enough imperial army was ahead lf them or something.
The siege is skimmed over pretty quickly, so there are too few details to really criticize it.

So I went back to read it and you seem to be right. I must have speed read at two points.
First Picrel. I'd forgotten that Conphas seemingly had a plan for Hinnereth, but to be fair, he literally does not elaborate whatsoever, and the conversation quickly becomes more about Kellhus, so I didnt think anything of it.
>>
File: 1747754838262399.jpg (1.2 MB)
1.2 MB JPG
Second of all. I genuinely still dont understand this. I know Conphas mentioned and Imperial fleet, at the Great Names meeting or whatever. But when and where the fuck did he get that fleet? So he just had that the entire time? More soldiers just sailing? Also, wouldnt communications be difficult from sea, how was this even orchestrated? Or did he literally just order the fleet to sail, as soon as he mentioned it at the Great Names meeting?
Also how is he "friends" with the dude who conveniently hold Hinnereth? Is this something to do with his hostage time with the Fanim? Or is this part of the deal for sending the Vulgar Holy War out early?
I'll take the L for speed reading, as I was reading the specific part literally at 3am, about to sleep, because I wanted to rush through the droning war aspects of the book before I wake up energized to read. But yeah, that was my confusion.

Glen Cook's Glittering Stone. I was told a while ago here that's it's part of the bad Black Company books, but I was okay with it. Maybe I'll hate it more with the context of the sequel books, I guess.
Scott Westerfeld's Goliath. Wrapping up alt history World War 1 with gene modded monsters and giant robots. Both main characters have given up thier secrets to each other and have bet on each other to carry them through this, but I don't feel like there's enough they can influence to have any effect on the war unless one of them really takes a main stage appearance.
Daniel Abraham's A Betrayal al in Winter. Continuing the Long Price Quartet. Wondering if the MC will actually manage anything big in this world for himself or spend his time being used and manipulated.
