/gpg/ - Gunpla/Plamo General 01/30/26(Fri)06:45:54 No.23730288 -=READ THE GUIDES=-
Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!
For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!
For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!
And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.
>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

01/30/26(Fri)06:46:30 No.23730290 -= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-
Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.
Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

My local brick and mortar had stock of the Big O for a short while, but it quickly sold out. I'm on their call list the next time they get it in though. And if/when I get one, Big Duo and the likely eventual Big Fau will be added to the list. I wonder if a Bonaparte and/or its components will be on the future potential list.

Lorewise Jestas are actually pretty rare machines so it might be fun to consider he probably killed an ace himself to get them. Or a commanding officer in an act of rebellion or something. Just food for thought.

30MM doesn't need to hide anything. Its modularity is a feature, not a bug. Pegs are not an intermediary step. They serve a purpose after the kit is assembled. Peg holes are a flex.
I'm playing with toys of cool robots.

Honestly, I think it might be a skill/product issue on that guy's part. Those off-the-shelf multi purpose rattlecans are pretty thick for model kits, they can work but they have to be used very lightly.
See this video;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVyubPEKv2Y
This guy airbrushes gaia notes matte/gloss coat, gives a very clean finish.
Which coat you use is (as usual) ultimately down to preference. The metallic sheen will always be there and will always stand out next to flat color, unless you fucked up painting it shouldn't ruin it.

01/31/26(Sat)13:51:51 No.23731971 I just painted for the very 1st time, experimenting with small parts, using tamiya spray white primer and hand brush with orange mr.color
I got some discoveries and questions
1. How do you hold parts that have nowhere to clip? here I simply gripped a portion that will be hidden by other parts
2. How do you deal with paint clogging some portion of a hole? just scrub it off later?
3. Is it normal that I had to paint (hand brush) the surface twice, 2 layers of the same color because the 1st time I do it, there's some unpainted spots here and there? maybe because I thinned the paint wrong? too thin? (1:1 ratio).
4. I poured too much paint. I didn't expect the thinner would increase the volume so much. how long could it survive in a closed plastic container, so I don't waste it and use it in the future?
Also question about future expectation
5. my primer is white, and my gunpla armor is also white that I want to repaint bright silver. do I still need to prime it? I mean, it's white on white.

>1. How do you hold parts that have nowhere to clip? here I simply gripped a portion that will be hidden by other parts
If it has a hole, I use reverse clips. If it has nothing I put in on cardboard with some double sided tape.
>2. How do you deal with paint clogging some portion of a hole? just scrub it off later?
You can mask it but it shouldn't fuck with tolerances so much that it'll prevent parts from going together.
>3. Is it normal that I had to paint (hand brush) the surface twice, 2 layers of the same color because the 1st time I do it, there's some unpainted spots here and there? maybe because I thinned the paint wrong? too thin? (1:1 ratio).
That's normal. You need to thin brush paints like that and do multiple layers to get a good flat coat.
>4. I poured too much paint. I didn't expect the thinner would increase the volume so much. how long could it survive in a closed plastic container, so I don't waste it and use it in the future?
It'll last for a pretty long time. Just make sure it's mixed well if it sits. I have paints I mixed over a year ago I still use.
>Also question about future expectation
>5. my primer is white, and my gunpla armor is also white that I want to repaint bright silver. do I still need to prime it? I mean, it's white on white.
Silver actually looks best with a darker primer. Acrylic paints need to be on a primer layer no matter what because they don't stick well and rub off incredibly easily otherwise. If you're using lacquers then you can skip the primer, technically. I would still use primer if you're brush painting them.

I plan on using airbrush for most parts, only hand brush parts that are too small / too few in numbers of the same color.

Mr Surfacer isn't a primer in the adhesive sense, the Mr Primer is an actual primer that helps with adhesion with non plastic materials (like metal and resin).
Regular mr surfacers like that one on the left is just lacquer paint with putty mixed in (which why you can sand these more easily compared to normal paint). The number denotes the size of the putty pigments that corresponds with the sanding grit surface they can fill in. So 1500 surfacer fills in imperfections from 1500, and 500 with 500 grit etc.
1000, 1200, or 1500 doesn't matter the colour is sufficient enough for priming plastic. 500 is more like a gapfiller, and surface texture is akin to rattlecan primers.

Also weirdly the calf panel lines went super shallow I assume due to a mold issue. Don't have a scriber yet, but I did a very small amount of work with a hobby knife to at least keep some of the paint in there.
Also one of the photo etch pieces from the back skirt disappeared over the last week as it sat on my table.

The F91 really is just a small, little guy. Thanks to the anon who told me to check out hobby town a few threads ago. It didn't work out, but they pointed me towards a local store with gunpla kits packed floor-to-ceiling.
What do you guys use for applying panel lines? I'm fine with a brush, but I see people online using fountain pens. Is it neater and easier?

Tamiya panel liner is the most popular, but you have to be careful with the type of plastic a part is made of. Most colored parts of Gunpla as PS which is safe to use with it, but lots of frame parts on non-recent kits are ABS which gets really weak when panel liner with it.

Just put it together and don't be rough. Maybe wear white cotton gloves and look like a prissy faggot while assembling. If the paint is dry it shouldn't flake off or scratch unless you're being extra dumb. Sand parts that don't fit anymore and make a mental note that your paint job went on too thick. Dry fit stuff together before painting. If it's a tight fit, mask it. More often then not a painted part shouldn't fuck with the tolerance unless you really glop that paint on.

If I could find a stand for it, it would be more on the worth it side, but all poses need to work standing wise without one.

02/01/26(Sun)02:20:41 No.23732780 I know I just need to go for it and stop worrying, but I just want to see if someone has taken this path and if they have any tips.
I have a handful of parts that should be metallic colored. Some a gunmetal or darkish gray metallic, some a brass color. Should I use a gray primer for the gunmetal and white for the brass or is a neutral gray fine for both parts? Anyone use colors like that and have a fave color/paint they swear by? It's probably preferable if the parts look a little tarnished or have a petina rather than looking shiny and new. Would I want to use a semi-gloss top coat for that?
I've only ever used washes on board game figurines. Just a spray primer, color wash with a brush, and a clear coat. I've never painted properly, spray or hand. I really have no clue where to start or what I might be missing. Any tips on metallic parts would be great. I just have one shot at this model and I wana make sure I don't dumbass my way through and forget a step.

Metallic you usually want with a black primer, glossier the better.
I haven't tried for a patina look, but the things I would try off the top of my head are
- Gray primer, with a layer of black panel liner on top, remove it at random/not fully. Then put the metallic on top.
- Black primer, metallic, then one of the weathering liquids or panel liner on top. If the metal doesn't patina to one of the colors of the liner/liquid, I don't think this would look as good.

Interesting, I always understood topcoat as a means of protecting your paintjob but for some reason I never assumed you topcoated individual parts, only general elements (arms, legs, etc). Up your tweezer game. Also get a decent light to work under. A nice bright architect lamp or something. Or maybe get an eye exam and some glasses. You can always just finger the piece. Feel which way it goes.
Little bits like that can be a pain. Filing them down a little is always a nightmare. Feel the part pop out of the tweezers and freeze and hope I can hear where it landed.

I opened a new kit with every intention of snapping that shit together with no paint or anything and get like 10 minutes into doing that to find one very conspicuous part was completely smashed and ripped in half, with some kind of clamp grip pattern pressed into it. I gave up all hope of repairing it and just puttied the slot that part was supposed to go on, and thus a couple hour afternoon snapshit project turned into a regular 2 month painting project.

02/01/26(Sun)12:39:28 No.23733230 I've got a huge backlog and have just been in a depression since like mid December. As far as I'm aware, all my pre-orders have also arrived, so what I got is what I got. I think I've actually got more HMM Zoids waiting than I do gundams, but three of them are Liger Zero variants. I also don't think I have any HMM waiting. It's all RG and MG I think. Actually no, I have a Woundwort.
>From memory
RG Zaku
RG Zeong
RG Burning Gundam
HG Woundwort
MG Char Zaku
MG Master Gundam
MG Gouf (Rambal, not custom)
HMM Shadowfox
HMM Panzer
HMM Schneider
HMM Jager
HMM Reddler
RMZ Command Wolf
I think that's all. Thanks for coming to my TEDx talk. What should I force myself to try and start? Wanna try and roll out of this hole.

It's still probably better to apply a layer of gloss than rely on the natural glossiness of lacquer paints like lazy nips do, especially if you really want to avoid silvering of decals. Also I don't understand how so many builders struggle with Bandai decals.

I do build a lot of plastic girls but Chinese kits are not that easy to get, at least European stores don't have much in offer and I don't really want to mess with AliExpress, don't trust them in slightest.
That being said, most Chinese girl models are quite good now, only if company is starting with those you might run into bad design. Yes, they will have occasional problems with fitting and such but nothing you can't fix with file or similar tools.

The only orders from them that I had go bad were my first attempt where I fucked up inputting the shipping address and thus it was entirely my fault, and when I ordered a bootleg Moon Gundam and it got held up by customs for a month and thus wasn't their fault anyway. Just as long as you don't buy from shady sellers (as the other anon said, that's what user reviews are for), you should be fine.

HG is perpetually stuck in boxhands hell and very little of them have extra hands to improve the kit's appearance. And even when you can ignore that, most of HGs have terrible redesigns so in the end they and the other lines are 2 sides of the same coin. It is fine to like SOME of them, but if you like all HGs then you are a pig.

Not sure how I feel about the gold on the beam rifle, but other than that it's a good weapon build. Fucked up and put a stress mark right in the middle of the shield. I had the shutter part flipped and it pushed it from behind as I tried to get it together. Did the shield first today, probably should have waited for the caffeine to kicked in. Not bad enough where it makes me want to give the whole part a pass of paint (I have Gundam red sitting around), but it's close... Actually writing that has me leaning towards a paint pass before the decals next weekend.

Also is there a single good core fighter that can be used as a core block also? This one has the same issue as the MG 3.0 where the wings refuse to be flat, either needing to be up or flopping down. I would think a PG would be big enough to where they could put a lock or something. Really just need a tiny bit of plastic that can slide out horizontally to brace the true wing up.

Oh, the official stuff will either cost you an arm or a leg or is already in scalper territory. And yes, they do reprint them, it'll just take several months at the very least and even then those will probably get snatched up immediately.
Odds are high that the Chinese will make bootlegs in the future though, if you're willing to tolerate that.

the Migu gundam collabs seems to be a one-off thing. once it's gone, it's gone. high chance though it gets bootlegged or you can paint a regular kit with Migu colors.

How do people in this world recolor gundams? Just go ape with a rattle can or is it usually air brushed? Or.. handbrushed? I know all can work but if someone said "I repainted a gundam" what is your knee-jerk expectation to the method? Rattle can primer and airbrush? I only ask because that sounds like a fun project but I just want an idea of how deep I'm getting in on it before committing.

Step 1: Prime with either rattlecan primer or airbrush. Brush on primers also exists. Your choice of primer boils down to budged, willingness to invest long term and whether you have space/climate/setup to spray toxic fumes around.
Step 2: Paint with either an airbrush or handpaint or combination of both (and probably plenty masking tape).
Steps ∞: add decals, weathering, panel lining, washes, stenciled patterns, clearcoat and so and so on, possibilities are limitless and it's up to you how autistic you wanna be about it.
If you're anxious about possibly ruining a nice kit, get some cheap chinese bootlegs and use it as a test subject for various techniques. For painting practice specifically you can use plastic spoons.

Finished my Char's Z'gok
It's a really cute little kit but ended up shockingly brittle and I'm not sure if it was age or what but the whole process ended up scuffed. I'm still happy with the result for the most part and especially happy that the sequin monoeye actually came out great, was worried about the topcoat causing it to look weird but it fogged it up in just the right way instead and I'm 100% doing it again on my next Zeon kit
The thing I'm least pleased with overall is the weathering, feels underdone and overdone at the same time where there are some parts where it just looks like smeared paint but also the brown I'd smudged on the feet is hardly visible. Feels like aquatic kits are hard to weather in a way that makes them feel used without being ruined, but I'll practice more with it another time. The chest isn't weathered that's an actual crack
Also the Bandai official Zeon decal sets come with stuff for nearly all of the early-00s 0079 kits except this one so I kind of just had to freehand it using some old art as reference, didn't feel right to slam a shitload of decals onto relatively simple surfaces

If it's an official kit then it's probably due to age. The bootlegs are very cheap and pretty good quality due to the kit's simplicity so you might be well-off getting some of those.

There's your problem. People will often forget this clear prop over here, and if you directly assemble this set of monstrosities on the back of the kit without that stand, it will remain a floppy mess. This thing is as bad as the PG 0 Raiser when hooked up to the 00 Gundam to start that they were aware that thing will happen to add that clear prop.
