Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

I got about 3 op pics left so feel free to shoot any at me, I use every one I get in the order I receive them. just make sure that /bale/ is visible from the thumbnail and that "anyone can draw" is somewhere in the picture.

I could maybe see someone tracing as a start to "get a feel for the shapes/build muscle memory" (or something IDK lol) and then drawing it again off of reference/blind.
>>
>>42915237
depends, if you just trace it without an in depth analysis you're just hurting your progress
someone more advanced should add their opinion but I like to trace poses or faces from various drawings, break them down with construction lines and then redraw them multiple times fixing things up until I can draw it from memory
it takes time but usually something sticks and helps me later on, even in a completely different pose
>>
>>42915242
hell yeah based
>>
>>42914269
>>
>>42915237
It can help for studying an artstyle, but what you might do is try figuring construction out and trying to draw that over the pictures you want to copy. Drawing boxes and beans around body parts and whatnot.
>>
>>42915237
Personally. I don't feel tracing is helpful for learning. Using a reference on the other hoof is a valid means of practicing an art style. I tend to reference poses from the show in my sketches

>>
>>42915380
Oh my gosh. What a cutie! The tail wag is killing me.
>>
>>42915237
No. Do not trace, instead use your eyes and copy from a reference (preferably in 3d). You have to learn to see and represent shapes
>>
>>42915237
Yes, you have to learn somehow, although I advise drawing by eye too, that will train your observational skills. You should be able to look at a reference and draw it without needing to trace. Try to learn from lots of different poses and facial expressions, then try drawing your own from scratch without any reference. If you're learning from screencaps of the show, try drawing some of the backgrounds as well!

Every anon is a different person anon, so they are naturally going to have their own opinions on the subject. IMO tracing can have utility for some but really it comes down more so on how someone learns moreso than anything else. Tracing can and will help one learn the basics of their chosen art program but it has the downside of potentially becoming a crutch. copying is generally better than straight up tracing because it trains more skills at the same time while being more flexible and less likely to become a hard crutch. Copying is particularly good at honing observational skills aswell which is important to improving. it's up to the first anon who asked the question to try out different things and see what works for him all things considered.
>>
>>42915640
No worries anon it's good nice twiggles
>>
>>42915237
as a bare bone start to understand proportions and shapes? kind of, but for doing your own art i personally go with doing basic geometry shapes, than scratching details into them than trowing a new layer on top and re-draw proper sketch on top.
>>

I'm untangling alright, something like

how do you guys do it?
i can draw a circle for fuck all and it's getting to a point where not being able to do such a simple task is the most infuriating thing in the world
i genuinely have never felt so low in my life
>>
>>42917072
Have fun! You gotta lighten up and enjoy the creative process; it's called bale for a reason, Anon. We don't have very high standards here, and it's that way on purpose so we can all enjoy making cool things and having fun sharing them.

Use screenies of ponies from the show and fanart as an example if you gotta study. The OP has a helpful little set of guide images in a URL too. If you're having trouble making a circle, try erasing the rough bits and replacing them rather than trying to do it all in one go, too. Again tho it is important to not let yourself be super critical and just let yourself have fun. Lots of free practice comes from being freespirited and just having fun.
>>
>>42917072
I can't do nice circles either.
Instead I swirl the pen around and around until there's a bird's nest that has a circle-ish shape.
Then I can either make another layer where I painstakingly trace out the "best" circle path within that mess. Or just Low Effort it and erase and polish around all the mess to make a colored sketch.
>>
>>42917230
I do this too. It usually ends up working out

>>
>>42917072
Its by using my arm/elbow, that's probably the first piece of advice I'd tell anyone who's starting to draw is to do that, it makes things a lot easier, and also makes it so you don't completely destroy your wrist down the line.

(like when drawing a circle I just keep my hand/wrist still and just move my arm in a circle like motion)
>>
>>42917259
I love the quaternion.
If only I'd ever get off my lazy ass and finish all the sketches I started on when the Guardsmares threads were still going.
>>
i've been trying to draw 1 thing every day traditionally (picrel). what are some tips to actually improve my skills and not stagnate? I mostly just want to draw mares. Something I am struggling with in particular is placement of horns on unicorns. They frequently look all lopsided and fucked up.
>>
>>42917721
use references. draw things that you struggle to draw with the intent to learn, not to make it perfect. that's my tips. not that i have room to talk, i haven't drawn in a long time. like a fucking fuck.
>>
>>42917721
I always end up referencing screenshots from the show and it's helped me to the point i don't need to rely on it anymore
>>

>>
I better see you all put effort to improve instead of just saying in your comfort zone and not improve at all
>>
>>42918766
I improved a lot in the last three years but im definitely stagnating right now.
>>
>>42919084
whatever you do, dont become one of those people who constantly change their art style for the sake of "not stagnating" the amount of times ive seen artists hit their peak then devolve due to trying to "improve their art further" is insane
don't fix what isn't broken unless there's ACTUALLY something broken like bad anatomy or perspective
>>
>>42919207
I, for one, will continue to mess up my art by changing everything all the time and forgetting what works. Thank you very much

Recently I tried painting and I really like how it turned out!
>>
>>42920081
woa... you spelled pinkie pie REALLY wrong in that painting
>>
>>42915237
I'd say it depends on what level you're at. If you're so new to drawing like I was where just drawing a line is an accomplishment I'd say it can be helpful to start with
>>
>>42917721
Use references, like other anons said. It can also be helpful to separate fun art and study art, because practicing fundamentals and things that you have trouble rendering will probably not be fun for you, but you need it in there to get gud. If you've got a body part or angle or whatever that you struggle with, pull up references and draw that a bunch.
>>42919207
I like to think of art styles as conscious choices that you can develop independently and switch between, but I suppose if you're starting off you shouldn't get too far into the weeds with that.
>>42919317

Strawberry Sunrise. Tried to do the sphere thing I've seen artists do. I think it was pretty helpful with getting the features in good positions, but parts of her still feel flat/out of sync. Phones take a picture in whatever orientation the camera was installed into the phone in, and then they use exif data to rotate it.
4chan strips all exif data from images when uploaded, since that's also where phones store the gps coordinates for where the picture was taken, and stuff like that.

Any drawfags use display tablets? Im looking to get one but im kinda lost on where to start.
>>
>>42932971
xp-pen has done me good over the years. i started with the 12/13 inch, and now i use a 23 inch one. the rule of them generally is bigger is better, just mind how much desk space you have.
>>
>>42932979
Ill check it out. Thanks anon.
>>
>>42932971
I don't use a tablet at all I'm a mouse masterracist. last time I used a tablet was back in like 2014 or so it was a used wacom bamboo tablet with no display though and I hardly used it less than a handful of times. a tablet would definitely be nice for certain rendering related tasks though but I'm to much of a tight fisted jew to part with my money for one. whats your budget though? that will definitely help people with recommendations. wacom makes some decent shit but their cheapest display tablet is about $300, I've heard good things about huion tablets too, and after checking xp-pen based on >>42932979's recommendation they seem nicely priced for what you get.
>>
>>42932971
I've got a Huion GS1562 that I like as a screenie, it was under 150 united states monies used on eBay if I recall. It's never done me wrong, but I'll warn that the thunderbolt cable port won't fit most third party cables due to being inset. I've also got the 13 inch one from that generation and it's the same, just smaller.

I also wanted to start the year with a pony every day, but fuck me. It's been a couple nights now that I've just sat at my desk and stared at a blank page for hours before going to bed. I don't want to give up though.
I swear to GOD if I don't post a pony TODAY I'll rip out my toenail with my bare hands and post it on /b/.

Leg study. It's interesting how subtle the hoof is, yet still clearly present. My pony butts could stand to be improved upon. A study for another day.
>>
HEAR ME BALE
I've been trying to draw for about a year now, but it's always been on and off, but TODAY I make a change. I've been working the strength and willpower to actually COMMIT this shit, I feel like a damn toddler, but I feel GOOD. I'm actually doing it! I'll try to ride the high as long as I can.
I think you call this a "study"? I'm just trying (emphasis on trying) to copy the show style and trying to get a feel for the shapes and proportions. I'll try to focus on learning new stuff and I'll leave little notes for myself on what I should try to improve. If this is too distracting or derailing feel free to tell me to shut the fuck up and I'll just post silently

>The sketch took a full hour and a half, coloring 30 minutes. Be faster, fail faster
>Re-study bale guides, I think I forgot everything about how to draw a pony
>Practice horse legs, how the fuck do they work? How thick are they? Do exercises.
>The entirety of the eye is unrecognizable from the source. Irises trip me too much, find a way to make the easier to draw
>Horn may be a little thick
>Commit to lines, fucked up too many outlines because of second guessing.
>Do softer sketch lines, eraser marks too noticeable
>Kind of gave up on the cutie mark, possibly because this took so long.

I honestly don’t know why I tried to color, I just had the coloring pencils around. It was fun but I didn't really like the result.
It's been so long since I last drew that I had to literally dust off my pencils

I'm always doing the very same thing.
With time I've gotten a little better at letting images that are totally stuck go. So now I can let new inspiration grab me without too much guilt, and sometimes even ride that fresh new wave to get a fully complete image done!
But some ghostly specter of "That really cool half-finished image I should get back to" will always stay in ones periphery. Just allow yourself to take new steps as well, despite the urge to keep looking back.
And sometimes one even musters up enough drive/new skills to go back and finish up some old gem! It's seldom too late!

It's late, I didn't get much practice in, but I don't want to quit in the second day.

- I like thick eyelashes, I think I'm gonna try to do them.
- Ran out of space in the page when sketching, didn't want to erase because I detailed as I made the body. Next time, finish the body first.
- I'm literally measuring the head, body and ass circles with my pencil so they're roughly the same size, there must be a better way to do this.
- Round butts are good. Butt perks up. The show has too many flat asses, next time draw them a little more plump.
- Docks are good too, I'll do them where I can (Addendum: I forgot to draw the dock I'm so retarded)
- Show lines are thick. I could keep the body's outlines thin, but I think making some lines thicker could make it look better, if done correctly (Addendum: I did not do it correctly).
- Made head way too W I D E (Too much brain).
- I'm struggling with ears, I've drawn them so much, they don't look real anymore.
- Still can't manage softer sketches.
- Fucked up the front hooves COMPLETELY when going over with the marker, perspective is now fucked. Try to clean up the sketch before outlining. Also fucked up the back legs too.
- I like the idea of the cutie mark curving with the butt (Addendum: Fucked it up, but I'll practice. I like the idea too much)

Mouf study. I'm really enjoying these studies, it's nice to practice a handful of variations of the same thing. Also, would you guys the snoofa sphere?
>>
>>42945609
Can't you just eyeball it? lol
>>
>>42944215
First, I try to draw an okay-ish circle, then I divide the face in halves (depending on where the pony is facing, I think that's how you do it.
Now it depends on the direction of the face, if it's facing forwards, normally I do the eyes first, then the snout.
If the pony is facing any other way, I get a feel for the middle of the face for the snout. Using it as a guide, I draw the closest eye, and then the other.

The problems I think are two:
1° I don't make good shapes, I try to pantomime the movements, but it doesn't work every time. And because I don't fully trust my initial shapes (this instance, the head circle) I try to over-correct it when doing the hard lines, you can see that on the forward facing pony, and with the Twilight in >>42943524, by not trusting the sketch I lost the round shape of the head. I think what I mostly do is to get more used to drawing circles and especially ovals, I can do straight lines mostly fine.
2° I'm using the nose as a guide to make the second eye, which most often than not makes the mare look goofy (you can see this in the Trixie)

I tried to make the same pony twice, #1 and #2. #1 I did using the nose as a guide and #2 I focused more on the positioning of the face, I think out of the two, #2 is better looking. The snouts though... I might need to do as >>42945700 and do some snout exercises

Do tell me if you notice a problem I don't though

>>
>>42946084
>I try to draw an okay-ish circle
I would put a little more time into getting the circle right. You don't have to make it in a single stroke, you can erase and redo parts.
>If the pony is facing any other way, I get a feel for the middle of the face for the snout. Using it as a guide, I draw the closest eye, and then the other.
Try doing the eyes first, and then worry about the snout.
>because I don't fully trust my initial shapes (this instance, the head circle) I try to over-correct it
Redo the foundation shapes until you trust them. You need a good base to build on.
>I'm using the nose as a guide to make the second eye
Like I said before, try making the eyes first and then make the snout.

That's the best advice I can give you, I'm no expert myself.

Nice blep, HOWEVER. I was working on this today and thought about posting her but I guess I have to now, for the blep!
Very cute Marble, love her puffed up cheeks. I think the mane shading works but maybe push the values/contrast just a bit more, still, nothing wrong with it really.
As for her, she's an OC I came up with while practicing poners, thought she was cute enough to make it a finished thing. I also experimented a lot with the rendering, tried to give it a "traditional" feel, also don't know how well it worked out. Designing the background was a lot of fun to do, not something I go for usually but I might do it more, I like how it looks.
>>42941133
Godspeed and good luck anon. Don't worry about being too rambly, I enjoy reading about anons' breakthroughs, process, and struggles.

hell yeah brother thanks
>>42947788
thanks, I did initially have lighter and darker values, but I personally thought it was a bit harsh looking for my liking but if I decide to do that style more I'll do more tinkering. your oc came out nice your on the right path texture wise. Imo the line work needs some more texture to recreate the effect of paper or at least a more noticeable texture. a paper effect on the flat colors can contribute too but its best to try to not over do it. it also depends on how true to trad art you're aiming for.

Yeah, doing the eyes first works better. I think I'll practice heads for a while, I'm noticing other problems too. Mainly the size of the eyes or the length and shape of my snouts, the face and the ass are the most important parts of a pony, and I've gotta get them right. I'll practice the circles, I feel like I got worse in the half year I did not draw.
I'll kill two birds with one stone, by doing circle practices and then doing faces on them, like this. Thanks for the feedback!

I'll try to give you some advice based off that drawing. First, the ponies hooves fan out, the legs get wider as they go down, her back leg is doing the opposite. Sticking to the legs, her thigh looks misshapen. I typically make the thigh one solid oval, the way you have it the bottom of her butt is curving inward too much. Next, I feel like her snoot is too wide, imo it would look better if the edge of her smile was closer to the center of her face. When it comes to snoots a half circle is a good place to start. Finally, it looks like her ear is nearly starting at the crown of her head. I'd try and move the whole ear over. The inner edge of her ear should be starting much closer to the side of the head, directly above the eye or even a little past it. Try to make the ear look more like it's on the side of her head rather than the top. I hope this helps you and gives you some ideas on how to improve. Keep at it, the more often you practice the more understanding the ponies anatomy will become like second nature. My final bit of advice for you is that until you feel like you have a strong grasp on what the ponies anatomy should look like, try to use a reference image for your drawings, It really helps when you feel like your drawing looks off but you can't pinpoint exactly why it does

Cute ponka anon!
Quick tip though, if you're working at small resolutions like this or draw pixel art in general, it's a good idea to blow the image up by a certain amount. Browsers and image viewers usually apply a bilinear filter to the image so small pictures will look very blurry, even when zooming into them. So exporting it at lets say 4x will make it look crisper, and make it take up more of the screen on modern displays so you're not forcing your viewers to zoom into it. Make sure to upscale with "nearest neighbor" in your drawing program and use an integer multiplier for the resolution. If you're using ms paint you sadly have to use another program to upscale because its builtin resize feature applies a filter too and you can't turn that off. Here it is at 8x the size.

For a second time trying it's a good ref sheet, style reminds me of G5. As for a small suggestion I think turning the nostril into a C curve or the like could maybe read better than a circle.
>>42971269
Pones are great for studying construction and shape since they can be simplified into circles, cylinders and a bean shape. Drawing em didn't really improve my human anatomy or anything but it did improve how I construct the human body and later paint planes.

Been a little under the weather and have fallen off the maregon (mare wagon). Here's a custom made mare, no references used. Her eye ended up smaller than it ought to be. I shaded her mane some, but I think the mane as a whole should've been done a little differently, in retrospect.

After that I did few sketches and found out that I could somewhat okayishly draw stallions. That lead to picrel. Also, drawing at two pages at once was kinda… liberating? Like pushing boundaries further and further. Not doing small strokes but long lines that became curves that became shapes. Also it was funny.

your eyes aren't really that bad but my recommendation would be 1 make them a bit bigger and 2 make them a bit more round. at least if you want a more show accurate look.
>>
>>43006932
>>43006985
pretty much this, although personally i use black outlines for my eyes(and everything else), and i find it helps them feel a bit more consistent and easier to make emotive.
id also say i think you should make the eyelashes a tad thinner along the eye, that way at least for fillies, it makes them a bit more cute looking and less like theyve been using make up. thats a personal preference though, youll have your own preferences after you do some studies and such

>>
>>43013033
Humans are tricky. They leave very little wiggle room, since we are programmed to see and analyze the human form. And not being particularly interested in humans overall means that one does a whole lot less practicing and caring with them.
Your great skill at art, with construction, shapes, proportions and perspective already lets you draw a very nice human! Especially if compared to my own symbol drawn, "this is sorta what a human is, right?"-ass guys.

And the cuteness factor of your ponies is still frighteningly high, anon. I love them.
