Why do we like guardspones?
Being in the guard means danger, violence, and maybe even chances of both dealing and receiving death. Isn't that something one would not want for one's sweetheart?
Is it just because they are rad and bad-ass?

It is new. It was a doodle I made when I re-read the whole story again, and was once again faced with how upbeat, cute and also powerful and capable Sparks is.
Like I said in the /bale/ thread; I really wish I'd get back to working on some of the sketches I started back when.
And especially some of the ones for Parks and Wilderness, since it is a great story with an unfortunate lack of fanart.

Oh I mostly winged it.
I looked up visored bascinets, since that's what the fic says she's wearing, and then took a million liberties.
What looks like the fixed, cap-style visor of a lobster-tail helmet is actually the flipped up visor of a closable bascinet, just with horribly lazily butchered perspective and proportions!
>>
>>42930793
That's so cool! I've been interested of the armor design for ponies, and while I really like the show style generic Greek-inspired helmet, a lobster-tail helmet could also maybe fit for Equestrian regular "infantry" (even though it's cavalry helmet technically.)

>>42929955 Very nice stuff!
Her pretty braid also gets me pondering again:
Do you feel that the fur crest on the guard's helmets should be:
a) The wearer's actual mane fed through a slot in the fringe.
b) A separate fur crest, but custom fitted with the colors (and perhaps even shape) of the owner's mane
c) A separate and uniform fur crest. One color fits all.
And then there's always the entirely uniform Royal Personal Guard, with the princesses' glamour magic, or horrible genetical manipulations, or whatever they did to those ponies.
>>
>>42933246
I've always thought that every helmet has this neat little enchantment that sucks wearers mane up and through a slot and make the crest. That way you don't need to shave if you got poofy or long mane and want that helmet to fit.
I've mostly disregarded the white copy-paste stallions of Celestia's honor guard as laziness from animators part. Not everything visual in the series needs to be 1:1 canon.

>>
>>
>>
File: Dash Crystla Empire Helmet.mp4 (2.8 MB)
2.8 MB MP4
>>42933280
That would be a very practical enchantment. But it would still put one's pretty mane at risk in a tussle.
It also appears to be something like how Crystal Empire guard helmets work.
Canterlot guards who doff their helmets retain the crests (with matching mane color) in some scenes. But then again, all this might just be down to what the individual animator felt like doing that day, or how important the character's mane style is considered to be; like Rarity and Zephyr Breeze wearing guard armor, having their distinct manes coming out of the crest.
>>42933307
Oh yeah. Proper Greco-Roman style, to follow the armor theme.
>>
File: Armor Autism.jpg (1.6 MB)
1.6 MB JPG
>>42934172
And here's a big autist collage with things that most people were probably already aware of!
>>42933280
Oh yes, that is absolutely the reason behind the honor guard. One could argue that in such a case the animators probably could have taken some time to rectify that earlier, before it grew into just being the truth of the world. Like in S6 when they made the Crystal Empire guards much more varied. And (much later) they DID vary up the Canterlot guard as well, and also threw in out beloved guardsmares!
But yes, it is probably kind of like getting mad at the lore implications of there always being several Linkys and Lyras, et al. in a crowd shot.
Boss-man Hasjew is standing over you with the whip and it was simply faster and easier to just copy the old flash rig you already have loaded.

My headcanon is that it's the mane that affects the crest. Your typical (boooring) guard has the regular crest and then those with crazy manestyles have it reflected through the crest.
Honestly, each crest should've reflect each guard's manestyle because it'll look cooler that way, but if you want a professional guard then they need to have the same crest.

I swear to celestia I wrote and outlined 70% of this last year
>You sit quietly in the red as the thud of the helicopter drowns your ears.
>The comms crackle, "5 minutes."
>TKing the drink tube to your mouth, you wet your parch throat.
>You always were nervous right before an op. Came up as one of the three: butterflies, dry throat, or the shakes.
>At least this tick isn't that bad, asides from the constant sips of water the entire ride.
>That's probably why you're not tier 1, but that doesn't stop you from being second best.
>"1 minute."
>The doors open wide and the ropes' weights are TK'd to the doors while you pull down your NVGs.
>A sudden tilt backwards as the helicopter arrests its movement. It levels itself and you drop the rope, followed by you fast roping down along with your Captain on the other door.
>Halfway down, the thud of the helicopter suddenly cuts off in exchange for the silence of the night.
>Looking around with your weapon drawn, you see nothing except for a brightly lit town in the distance and sparingly few shrubbery.
>You quickly move to secure the area as the rest of your squad drops down.
>Done with its job, the helicopter unceremoniously drops the rope and flies off into the green of your vision, completely disappearing into the new moon's night with not so much a peep.
>Your Captain, already a few feet ahead, motions for everyone to join him before marching off with all of you in tow.
>You have your spot in the middle of the line, like usual.
>Up ahead, the town is still lit up with lights, but you are about five klicks from it.
>The march is done quietly. Everyone in your squad is on high alert, their necks on a swivel the entire time.
>You all eventually hunker down behind a small rocky face away from the town.
>The Captain pulls out a map to study it again before you enter, inviting you and a few others to look over it again.
>It's a big town, with around 10,000 inhabitants and sprawls just under 7000 acres. Your target is deep, nestled about 6 klicks north east from your current location.
>You'll have to move through the light for now, but at least almost everyone in the town should be asleep at 0322.
>Almost everyone.
>Satisfied, your Captain stands up and starts for the town, with all of you filing behind him once again.
>Most of the street is lit up, and your conspicuously heavily armed squad is way too exposed.
>What would be a short trip is anything but. The streets are constantly winding like a flowing river, with 6 foot walls separating each multistory house, alleyways few and far between.
>But nothing happens until you approach your target.
>This area of the town is more open and lit up than the rest, forcing you and your squad to lift your NVGs up. That means only one thing.
>The pace slows down considerably, as you all carefully creep up to the compound making sure not to be spotted by any sentries, getting to a small building.
>>
>>42941007
>Peeking around a corner causes the Captain to hold up a balled fist and speak quietly, "Three tangos. One in the building at 10 o'clock, two on the walls. Incog, Redacted, you two get the walls, I've got the last one."
>Incognito and Redacted are boosted up to your building's sloped roof. They both crawl forwards slowly to set up on their marks.
>"Got 'em in view, Captain."
>"Same here."
>The Captain kneels, slowly peeking the corner with his rifle.
>THIP
>THIP-THIP
>"Move!"
>You all scurry to the compound's wall as your Captain flicks radioman's equipment on.
>"Blue Room, Smokey-1 is home." He turns back to you all, "NVGs down, now!"
>A moment later and the power is cut, letting the night reclaim the town.
>"Fiz, go!"
>You quickly pull out two charges from your saddlebag and slam one against the wall a few yards away from your Captain and the other a few yards behind your squad.
"Fire in the hole!"
>KRSSSHBOOOOOOOOOM
>Two holes are cleanly blown through as you direct their energy towards the wall.
>You generate two flash balls at maximum power, then toss one through each mouse-hole before your squad splits and streams through.
>You hear a few suppressed shots as you enter and already the courtyard is cleared, a few enemy combatants lying dead on the ground.
>No time to look further, though, as you have to bring another charge to the gated front door, blowing it open.
>You toss another flash through the door and after a BANG your squad, including you, moves in.
>Two doors on the right and one on the left. The left door's closed, while the furthest right door is slightly propped open.
>You try the closed doors as you enter, finding that the left door is unlocked while the closed right door is locked.
>As two cover the left door while the rest split, stacking on both right doors, you pick the right door unlocked. You stand between the two stacks, conjuring four balls of light that are evenly thrown through the now open right doors.
>BANG BANG-BANG-BANG
>The two fireteams breach and engage whatever is behind the doors.
>A few shots sound from the right doors before both teams emerge with a "Clear!" before stacking on the remaining door.
>You can hear stomps above you paired with faint shouting coming from the left door.
>Again, you open and throw two flashes through. Both detonate prematurely, one almost immediately.
>"Stairs!" calls out the Captain as peeks into the doorway and up, before trading fire with someone.
>"They've got some barricade up there, looks like 2 guys."
"I've got it."
>Standing next to the door, you TK a grenade from your side, pull the pin, and pop the spoon as it zips upwards at a 45° angle, hitting a corner to the sound of the two contacts trying to scramble away.
>THWOOM
>Dust falls from the ceiling as the nade goes off, and the Captain takes point with you following close behind him.
>>
>>42941008
>Two limbs are strewn on the stairs, a burning smell entering your nose.
>There's another doorway to the side of the stairs at the top, so you toss two flashes through.
>You keep dumping flashes as the two of you ascend, followed by the rest of the squad.
>Finally at the top you toss three for good measure and draw your pistol.
>He clears right and you clear left.
>You don't see anyone, but from the shots behind you your Captain did.
>"Clear!"
>The rest of the squad filters in.
>"You two," the Captain points at Nameless and Unnamed, "Watch the windows for any squirters or heroes."
>"Yes, sir." They say in unison.
>When you try the doors, both are locked.
>Two quick picks later and the two fireteams are ready to breach.
>You're about to breach both of them when the right door is peppered with gunshots that start moving towards the fireteam.
>"GET DOWN!"
>Four of them hit the ground as the shots penetrate the sandstone wall they were behind, filling the room with sand.
>You TK the dust together and send it back through the bullet holes, spraying the assailants.
>That gets you a yell followed by violent coughing. One of those is feminine.
>You turn your focus on the left door, opening it and tossing two flashes as a four-man breaches and clears.
>The four who hit the floor get back up and you repeat the process.
>This time you join them as they enter room with the Captain entering behind you all.
>"DROP THE FUCKING GUN! DROP IT! DROPITNOW!"
>Charging your horn, you blast the man and mare with a stun spell.
>"AH!"
>"Gzh!"
>Both drop to the ground, along with their weapons.
>The other fireteam enters the room as their weapons are taken away.
>The Captain speaks, "Get the intel. Fiz, deal with the pony."
>Everyone save you, the Captain, and one squadmate start opening the drawers, ripping the pcs open, tearing down papers, taking phones, and doing whatever they can get their hands on any data.
>Out of your bag comes the transport kit: gag, blackout goggles, ear plugs, head bag, restraints, and a harness.
>Calling on your training, you TK the kit over to the mare whose struggle intensifies when the blindfolds cover her eyes.
>Tsk, with a little encouragement from a stun spell followed by a sedative, she's simple work.
>The guy pointing down at the remaining hostile calls out the Captain, "Sir, what about this guy?"
>"Don't need him." he replies.
>That's all Incog needs to hear.
>THIP
>Tightening the final restraint around her wings, you TK her over to Incog, who is carrying an empty backpack.
>You strap her inside using the body harness, making sure her body is snug against Incog's back.
>"House-1, this is Smokey 1-1, package grabbed." The Captain reports, before looking at the furious data grab. "Make it quick, boys. We're bound to get some contact soon." Then he turns to you. "Get a drone up, I want a feed."
"Yes, sir."
>>
>>42941010
>You both move out to the main room, where there's a window. TKing a small tubed object out of your center saddle bag, you smash the window open and with some magic, you send the tube high up into the sky with a WOOOOMP. As it travels up, the sides open up, revealing wings that let it take flight.
>Both you and the Captain flip down your chest device, watching as the feed goes online to a thermal view.
>"Set the drone wide, I want three klicks covered from this position."
>You quickly input the new parameters as he uses the camera to scan the surroundings.
>"Shit. There's at least three vics, one tech, heading our way. Moving fast."
>He taps on the screen a few times. "Prep another one, Fiz."
>You dutifully do so, sending another one into the air as you lose connection to the previous drone.
>WOOOOMP
>Two out, one more to go.
>"That should slow them down a bit. Hurry up! We're out in five!" The Captain then turns to the two men on the windows. "Get down there and see if you can get us a ride."
>"Yes, sir."
>The Captain turns back to you. "Be my eyes." He orders before he reenters the room filled with intel.
"Yes sir."
>You sit down, swiping the screen with your TK to scan your surroundings. So far, the first enemies are dealing with the aftermath of the switch strike. The lead vehicle is aflame with a smashed van behind it. The convoy is completely stopped and you can make out figures moving about, clearly helping their injured comrades.
>Continuing to look around, you begin to see some white hot spots emerging from the homes around you. Some of them are wandering around in the dark. If all goes well you can ignore them.
>Your ears turn towards the heavy footsteps coming up the stairs and out comes Unnamed.
>"Hey Fiz, did you see any car keys up here?"
"Dunno."
>"Damn." Is all that comes out before he looks into the intel-busy room, "Any car keys in there?"
>"No," comes the reply.
>"Double damn." He goes into the other room to look.
>You turn your attention back to the screen. You see a single vehicle a distance away, snaking its way towards the previous convoy. Zooming in, your suspicions turn correct: an ambulance. So far, so good.
>Unnamed comes out of the room, "No dice. I think you blew it up with this guy, Fiz."
>You look at the body bits strewn about, noticing the one intact body that the Captain smoked.
>TKing the body, you feel around for any keys but you come up empty-hoofed.
>You flash Unnamed a grin.
"Looks like you'll have to make do."
>"Yeah yeah, thanks," he replies as starts down the stairs.
>You continue to swipe around, looking in all directions including outside the town.
>Still quiet.
>Let's see, nothing, nothing, noth-
>Buck.
>>
>>42941011
"Another convoy, 6 klicks north! 1 vic, 3 techs!"
>"Double time, everyone! Fiz, check if they've got the vics going and unlocked the gate!"
>You rush down the stairs and outside to the compound's yard.
>This time you are able to count five bodies and a vic parked on the edge. Nameless is kneeled down, looking through one of the bodies.
>On the side of the building is a garage with its door open, containing two vics. The truck's light is on, its engine humming. Unnamed is behind the wheel of the other one, head down as he works to hot-wire it.
>The wall's gate is still closed and locked.
You TK it unlocked, then push it open, "Double time, gentlemen! We've got more friends."
>Nameless doesn't look up as he's rooting through a body, "Fiz, help me a little here." He points at two other bodies, "Check those guys for me. /This/ fucker has too many pockets."
>TKing through the bodies, you rummage through their pockets and zippers, pulling out everything into a single field to bring towards yourself.
>Wallet, photos, ammo... no keys.
"You still need help there?"
>"No, I... yeah."
>Less than a minute later everything is out, a key included in the floating field.
>"Fucking magic."
"Great, isn't it?"
>"For you."
>Just then, you hear a familiar buzz in the air.
>"Drone!"
>You bolt inside, up the stairs, and into the intel room.
"Drone!" Is all you let out as you overcharge the radiopack with a continuous stream of magic.
>The radioman, Classified, drops his pack for easier access.
>He enables the jammer, turning some knobs to adjust the frequency, all while you keep the magic up.
>The Captain speaks up. "Change of plans, we are getting out of here, now! Fiz, leave some calling cards! Let's move!"
>Classified reshoulders his pack as they all go downstairs at a brisk pace.
>You, on the other hoof, lag behind them, opening your bag to chuck some proximity mines inside and outside the intel room before arming them.
>Going downstairs, you catch the tail end of Unnamed's report. "...three vics working. A truck, van, and sedan."
>"Good. Bravo team, take the truck and rear. Charlie, the sedan — make sure you keep your head down Incog." Incognito nods his head. "Alpha, we'll take the van and point. Keep your lights off."
>You all pile into your respective vehicles and take off into the night as a small convoy.
>Out the window you see people watching you leave the building, no doubt bound to tell the enemy where you're going.
>The Captain, meanwhile, is staring intently at his screen tapping it every moment, so you take the moment to look away from the van window to pop yours open again.
>>
>>42941015
>From your screen, you see him furiously moving the drone's single camera to and fro, trying to cover as much area as possible.
>You drive in silence for a while, taking constant turns down the road.
>Looks like the tech convoy reached the compound, releasing two dozen enemies. Some of them spread out to question the nearby civvies, while others enter.
>A sizeable group enters and a moment later a flash comes out of the second floor's window.
>White figures rush out of the building.
>Classified speaks up, "Sir, command is saying there's activity in the towns near Alpha point. They've rerouted our extraction to Papa point."
>Papa?
>That's far back north east, where you just left. You'll have to cross the entire town. Going around isn't an option because of all the rocks and uneven ground. Unless you want to do it on foot.
>Your Captain slams the vic's dash. "FUCK! Keep going, I'll get another route for us. Fuck..."
>Innominate nods and quickly takes a peek at his screen's GPS before taking a left.
>You're about 2 minutes from the outskirts when the Captain depresses his radio's talk button. "I've updated your GPSs, we're moving out to Papa point."
>Innominate's screen flashes, prompting him to take another left.
>Looking back at the drone view, you see that two of the technicals are already moving south west towards you.
>The Captain takes the proactive step of calling out alternative turns to avoid the techs.
>Your little convoy breezes past multiple homes on the east outskirts.
>In a minute you've already skipped past the techs, but the screen is starting alight with more white as more residents wake up to the early morning activity.
>More worryingly, there's another group- no, make that four more groups. Three of them have one tech, the other two. They're splitting up to find you.
>Wait, only two of them are searching for you. The other two are dropping of hostiles and setting up roadblocks. Even that first convoy is setting up, too.
>How'd they know you're moving in that direction?
>Not that it matters; your group is making swift progress to one of the roadblocks.
>The captain speaks up when you're half a klick from it, "Innominate, stop here." He then presses on his radio. "Disembark, we're on foot from here on out."
>Once everyone is out of their vehicles, the Captain motions you over, pointing at a wall. "Fiz, make a path."
"Yes, sir."
>You use your magic to conjure a set of glowing hot pink stairs that are wide enough for two of your squaddies to fit on.
>Climbing to the apex first, you generate the other set of stairs going down into someone's yard.
>Your squad hustles up and down.
>With your Captain's direction through a few more walls, your entire squad passes the roadblock without detection.
>Its exhausting, though; having to support the stomping weight of 11 heavily armed men and 2 ponies five times.
>>
>>42941018
>Only after 25 minutes of constant stair raising and good separation from the roadblock does the Captain allow you some rest.
>That is, magic blackout orders while continuing the hustle.
>Your hydration bladder is nearing empty at this point.
>You've got one energy bar left, but with hooves you'll be hard pressed to actually eat it.
>You seriously don't want to move on three hooves at this rate.
>Continuing in silence, your Captain makes some cursory glances at the screen before snapping it shut.
>A balled hand rises.
>You all halt, and that's when you hear it.
>A vic.
>He motions for you to kneel. Weapons are raised at the corner.
>A bright light shines down the road.
>The sound of its engine grows louder and louder.
>Then a truck speeds by, several combatants standing on its bed.
>And like that, they're gone around the corner.
>Your Captain turns around and speaks in a hushed voice, "There's a shitload of tangos swarming this town, probably found our vics. They're coming from nearby areas and whatnot, everyone is on high alert and they're waking most of the town up. That means civvies watching us. Don't shoot unless you have to."
>He reaches for the radioman's pack. "Blue Room, this is Smokey-1-1. Priority request: we've got a lot of activity going on. We need CAS if we're going to get out of here." He pauses, listening to the other side. "Air recon? Where's our sortie?" His brow burrows. "Alright then, thanks."
>Putting the radio away, he looks back at all of you, opening his screen as he does so. "It seems our sortie has been taken by another squad. But, we've got a reaper coming, 20 minutes away. From our pace... it'll take us some sixty or so minutes to get to our extraction on foot, from my estimates. It's going to be a hell of a trip."
>He scrutinizes the screen a little, pressing and swiping here and there. A few seconds later you hear a dull thud. "Fiz, send another."
>Last one.
>WHOOOMP
>You all stand up and continue down the green streets.

In the Crystal War timeline, all the combat-role ponies get to have that short-cropped tail.
And short manestyles. And cool gear. And just looking and being fucking rad in general.

>A few minutes walking down the streets do you spot your first civvie face.
>You're not the only one to do so.
>From behind you Incog pipes up, "Sir, I see a civvie. 8 o'clock."
>"Keep moving," is your Captain's only reply.
>Turning right, you see a light shining down from further down around the intersection.
>Looking at his screen, the Captain speaks up, "Fiz, give us a route north, three houses."
"Yes, sir."
>You again conjure a set of stairs, and you step up to prepare its other set.
>CRACK CRACK-CRACK-SNAP
"SHIT!"
>You instantly dive down from your suddenly illuminated position as bullets fly past you.
>Hitting the ground with an 'umph!' you scramble back on four legs.
>"Back, back back!"
>You all quickly move back around the corner.
>Innominate rushes over to you. "Are you hit?"
>You do a quick scan of yourself.
"No no, I'm good."
>The building in front of you then lights up with several cones of light shine towards the intersection.
>The Captain points to your right while keeping his eyes trained towards the building, "Fiz, get this gate open!"
>You comply, wiggling your magic through a crack and pulling the bolt unlocked. Your squad slips into the courtyard of a two story building.
>He points at the home. "Clear it, quietly. No lights."
>You unlock the door and your squad begins to quickly clear the first floor, finding it empty.
>On the second floor do you find the bedrooms.
>The first bedroom is a couple that you blindfold and gag. The other, their child who you do the same. You tie them up together in the bathroom, their legs and arms bound by zipties.
>Afterwards, you all meet up with the Captain in the living room, except for Nameless and Redacted who are performing overwatch.
>The Captain nods at the pile of magazines on the table. TKing out the loose rounds from your bag, you reload them in swift fashion.
>"We need to move fast. We've got tangos coming in from all around us, save our north east. I was hoping to cross this area quietly — it was the smallest line of resistance I could find — but it seems we'll need to break through now."
>He checks into the two upstairs by pressing his radio. "Redacted, do you have eyes on the east house?"
>"Yes, sir. We've seen at most three tangos, all in open view."
>"Good. Alpha team, we'll join the two. Bravo, Charlie, Fiz: go clear the north house. We'll deal with the east house on your mark."
>You chorus a 'Yes, sir' with Bravo and Charlie team, and leave the house.
>Under the cover of darkness, you peek around the corner to look at the house down the street. It's too dark to make anything, but they're there.
>Your only solace is the Captain and team doing overwatch, ready to spring at a moment's notice.
"Ok, go!"
>In a dash, you all make it to the northern house's door without a hitch, but you're still exposed to the eastern house.
>This has to be fast.
>>
>>42943381
You depress your radio switch, "Breaching!"
>A flash of your horn, and you blow the door with a charge.
>Two flashes in and everyone is through the door.
>A man is sitting at the living room table, covering his eyes.
>THIPTHIP-THIP
>There are yells from upstairs.
>Charlie team begins to clear the ground floor while Bravo team goes for the stairs along with you. You begin to pour flashes upwards to the sound of gunfire.
>Unknown is the first up and engages someone as he continues into the second floor. Upstairs, you first see two bodies, then hear the sound of a door slamming shut.
>The fireteam stacks up on that door.
>"Nade it!"
>Standing by the side of the door, you TK the door open a crack and swing a grenade in before pulling the door shut.
>THWOOM.
>You and Bravo team clear the rest of the floor, finding no other enemies.
>Downstairs, Charlie team reports the same.
>Unknown reaches for his radio. "North building clear. Four tangos down."
>"Affirmative. East building is also clear. Meet up on the street, that tech isn't moving yet but some tangos decided to take shelter in the buildings around it. They're trying to pin us."
>At that, you all enter the street, moving over to the intersection where the technical is looking down.
>"Here's the gameplan: Charlie, Fiz, you guys clear this building," He points at the house you're standing next to, "And then Fiz, you get back to me. Fiz'll set a screen across the intersection here, drawing their fire. Charlie will wait for targets of opportunity before engaging. Redacted, get the technical gunner and driver. Alpha and Bravo will cross once they're suppressed, and then we'll provide cover fire while Charlie crosses. I see some vics across the street, Unknown and Restricted get those working after we cross, we'll need at least 2. Let's do this."
>"Yes, sir!"
>Entering the building, you clear it without a hitch; there are only 2 civvies, awake, that you restrain.
>Charlie sets up deep inside the third floor, watching outside the windows with a clear view of the technical.
>Outside, the Captain looks at you. "Ready whenever you are."
>The street is about 30 to 35 feet wide, which is a bit under your limit of 45. You can probably get it 7 or so feet high.
>You channel your focus into your horn, constructing a long unbroken pink sheet that zips across the street, terminating at the end.
>Instantly the sound of a HMG starts up, along with small arms fire that peppers through the screen. Your magic is excellent, however, as bullets phase through without ever affecting it.
>THUKATHUKATHUKATHUKATHUKATHUKATHUKA-
>And it stops.
>Still, the small arms continue.
>"Wait for it..." the Captain says, "Wait for it..."
>"Jesus, how many guys are there?"
>Your Captain ignores the comment. "Move!"
>One by one, each squad member peels for the other side as the small arms fire continues.
>As the last one crosses, so do you.
>BZZZZZZZZZINGGGGGG
>>
>>42943384
>A sharp pain flashes across your left foreleg, causing you to stumble. Your focus on the spell wavers for a moment.
"BUCK! I'M HIT!"
>A voice yells out, "Cover fire! Get some smokes out there! Restricted, on me!"
>Bullets begin to whizz by you, getting dangerously close, but you keep the spell up as you continue forward.
>Gotta make it, gotta make it.
>Two figures come into your vision and grab you roughly, pulling you forward. Another figure comes towards you, then the gear from your foreleg is shed.
>You watch as your medic tightens a tourniquet to stem the freely flowing blood. He grabs something from his pack, pulling it open to offer it to you, but you shake your head through the pain.
"No... I- I can get through it. I'll take it when we're out. Gimmie something weaker."
>Innominate raises his eyebrow, OTFC still in hand, but then retracts it. He pulls a painkiller from his bag and pops it into your waiting mouth along with a splash of water.
>He then gets to work on dressing your wound.
>"Alright, keep up the fire! Bravo, clear this building and put some lead into them!" Your Captain presses the radio, "Charlie, get ready to cross!"
>"Sir, the dro-"
>Unknown opens up on someone across the street.
>THIP-THIPTHIP-THIP
>"We've got a hero! Don't know if I got him!"
>"Hit him with a 40 mike-mike. Follow up with a smoke!"
>Unknown aims with his underbarrel launcher, letting off a THOOMP with a spray of dust. After the accompanying boom, you TK a smoke right up to the balcony where the enemy was.
>Turning you attention back to the screen, the once ferocious barrage from before is now reduced to a few pot shots from the other side.
>Your Captain finally relays the order, "Charlie, cross now."
>An uncomfortable explosion goes off some distance from your south.
>Classified, who was interrupted before, speaks up. "Sir, we've got the reaper, call sign Hunter. They're reporting heavy contact closing in within 2 minutes and they've already used a paveway at their digression."
>"No shit. Tell our ride we're getting there early, around 10 minutes. Get on the vehicles, now!"
>Unknown and Restricted bolt to two vehicles, smashing the windows to begin their work.
>You keep the screen up as Charlie begins their cross.
>It goes by without a hitch.
>Looking around, you have time to spot movement in the houses all around you. Fearful, but curious faces peer at you from the windows.
>Someone pipes up, "Not liking this. They can probably see us now."
>Your Captain replies, "Hold the perimeter: weapons free if anyone of them starts shooting."
>Luckily, a minute passes peacefully before you have two working trucks.
>"Get us moving north east, now!"
>Both vics take off quickly down the road with their lights off.
>The first left turn has you hissing in pain as you smack your injured foreleg into the door.
>The following turns are rough and fast, but you're ready for them.
>>
>>42943387
>When you're on the straights, you take time to look out the windows. You see some civvies milling about, but nothing worrying.
>Yet your horn stays slightly charged.
>On your next turn, a truck stacked with foodstuffs is slowly making its way down the single lane road in front of you. Both sides of the street are filled with cars.
>"Hold on!" yells Innominate.
>Your truck starts to speed up, aiming straight.
>You hear two shots from the truck bed as the left wheels of the blocking truck are taken out. The truck loses control, veering to the left and crashing into a parked car.
>Your truck passes on the right.
>Innominate pumps a fist and looks back. "Woooooo! Good one!"
>The Captain leans his head to the open rear window. "Eyes on the road!"
>You continue zipping down the road and another person tries to take some shots at your little convoy. The ten rifles going off in succession deter them from trying again.
>"There it is!" Your captain shouts, "That building over there! Innominate, park us at the entrance!"
>The building in question is a school with a large, flat roof. Around it are multiple two story buildings sprinkled by a few single ones.
>Your truck jerks to a stop at the front door and you all disembark. You can feel the civvies eyes on you as you wobble over to crack open the entrance.
>Closing it behind you, you TK it locked. You don't bother to barricade it because of all the windows around you.
>"Alright, let's get to the roof, people. We're out in a minute!" says the Captain, looking down at his screen. He presses his radio, "Hunter, drop a paveway on their lead vic, block their direct path to us."
>A boom sounds out.
>He looks back up. "Great, now let's find the stairs."
>After a moment of searching you discover a flight of stairs tucked into one of the hallways. You reach the roof with a little bit of magic, spotting a familiar black shape in the sky.
>You take out almost all of your smokes and pull their pins, throwing them around the school. The Captain tosses a red colored one on the roof. A rush of wind blasts your face as the helicopter shows its belly to slow down, then descends to a soft landing on the roof.
>The roar of the blades pops into existence as you rush to the open door. Within a minute you all pile in, and with a quick confirmation you take to the skies in haste.
>Innominate pulls out the OTFC and you gratefully TK it into your waiting mouth.
>The flaring pain in your foreleg disappears as you sigh and lean back. It was starting to be unbearable.
>Your medic begins to recheck your wound.
>Your Captain turns to his radio. "Blue Room, this is Smokey 1-1. Package secured." He looks at all of you. "Good work."
>In return, he gets a few non-committal grunts, some cheers, and a smile from you. Some of the guys start chattering about who they killed and whatever else they did.
>The OTFC is really kicking in now.
>You close your eyes.
>Another day, another tomorrow.

MISSION STATUS: SUCCESS
Target Golf Lima (GL) captured successfully by UCOB, G-4 [1] (Smokey) with approximately 32 EKIA. Smokey reported one non-life-threatening WIA (their SU [2]) during a crossing attempt. Continued monitoring of the raid town shows heavy enemy activity, including in nearby towns. Previously unknown AA vehicles have taken positions in these towns. MANPADs distribution spotted at POI-Hotel. Recommended no further action in this area.
GL debrief slated for 0800, administered by [|||||||||||||||||||||||]. Initial analysis of gathered intelligence suggests a deeper network and resolves several points of investigation.

I would hug and cuddle her during her darkest nights.
I would hold her hoof every morning to tell her I am there for her.
I would kiss her and tell her nothing is wrong.
I would gently caress her as I whisper sweet nothings to her ear.
I would let her hold onto me as long as she wants as her fears melt.
I would love and cherish her everyday as if she were the sun herself.

Let's talk about armed forces of Equestria.
Do you think they only have the royal/palace guard shown in the series, with guardsponies barely knowing why they're even there other than "palaces just need to have guards, simple as."
Or full armed forces with different branches and garrisons across the Equestria keeping the peace from changelings, rogue packs of diamonds dogs and rare seasonal villain?
What's your headcanon on this?

I really like the former, since it is way cuter and more idyllic. Snowpitiful, one might even say.
But the land of Equestria's fauna, and sometimes flora, many times seem straight out of a TTRPG encounter book; which one might indeed want some sort of local militia or garrison ready to help with. And the goddesses do mention worrying about becoming embroiled in "war", so the different people/states of the world/land are capable, and possibly historically proven, to fight each-other/the ponies. For that, one would also need more than just a stable of handsome parade stallions and mares that the castle's inhabitants can gaze at appreciatively.
But maybe it's some kind of happy medium! Maybe there's never actually been a full war in many ages, and most of the creatures of the land might usually be handled by the inhabitants themselves with "home remedy" style countermeasures that almost everypony knows.
So there are no drafts, and there might be some local garrisons but they are mostly staffed by those "just wanna help ponies out, simple as." style local guards.

I kinda think it's medium of sorts from both. They have the whole standing army, ponies keeping themselves busy, building roads, different branches doing their stuff, but ultimately it stems from the same silly idea of that palace guard.
"Nation needs to have army."
>So, now we've organised into armed forces, what do we exactly do?
And nopony really knows. Years gone by has shown that little garrisons here and there are helpful against the rogue beasts that prowl in the wilderness and come too close. They can and know how to kill in self-defence but try to avoid in into last possible moment because it's not really harmonious.
And why? Because I think little ponies are cute, so even military stuff of their should be cute too.

They only have the royal palace guards, hence the name royal guards. You see no guards elsewhere because their law enforcement is pretty much the ponice or ponies themselves. Especially in Appleloosa and the wild "west" do they have no solid military force. Equestria has no defense against external forces (see: the movie) asides from the princesses and the M6, which is apparently enough.

I would guess she has at least heard her name, no clue how big celebrities m6 are in that storyverse. I really like how it's bit detached from them, not everything in Equestria needs to be about those same six ponies.

They didn't even know who Twilight, an alicorn princess, is so RD (not Wonderbolts yet) would be a literal who to them.
>I really like how it's bit detached from them
I like that too, but I'm kind of surprised we haven't seen the Wonderbolts yet. Maybe during the Grand Melee but I doubt it because they're hardly mentioned. Guess they're just some acrobatics division like the Blue Angels, even though they should be the best pegasi ever.

But jokes aside, I think there was some indirect reference towards wonderbolts deep there somewhere, but it's been a while since I read it so I might be hallucinating it too.

It's on pause until at least I am no longer an in-betweener taking care of my kid and my elderly father. I do actually have a thousand words or so written for the next chapter but zero energy to keep going at the moment. I barely have the energy to shitpost.
>>42966797
Artemis is aware of the Wonderbolts and so may know of Rainbow Dash, though it hasn't been made evident if she's actually a fan of them. She's pretty aware of the administrative details of the military, and may have seen the Wonderbolts perform.
>>42967593
>>42968005
In the story's canon I have it that most residents of Canterlot (and other big cities) consider places like Ponyville to be out in the sticks and beneath their notice. The news reports don't always capture the details of local heroes defeating such-and-such a monster-of-the-week, let alone their names. There's a segment where Glamerspear talks about competing theories for how the M6 beat NMM, for example. And Twilight hasn't really done much in terms of Canterlot government at this point.
>>42968011
The Wonderbolts are canonized in this story as the stunt performance team and, while part of the military, don't fly combat missions as a group. Same as your USA Blue Angels or UK Red Arrows or Canada Snowbirds etc. Very good and famous flyers, but you don't use them to airstrike Osama Bin Laden's Mountain Fortress, or at least, not as literally the Wonderbolts.

Hey man! Thank you for taking the time to reply. I absolutely adore your work; the characterization is some of the best I have seen in all of MLP fanfiction.
I understand. I take care of my elderly grandparents whilst struggling with arthritis myself. I get it. The total and utter lack of energy all the time. Going to sleep and and waking up already exhausted. It's not, like, depression, but you just cannot take the time to do the things you actually love.
Take all the time you need. I hope things get better for you, and I cannot wait to see the day that Everyday Life gets updated. And if things don't work out, then thanks for what you have already written. I've reread the entire story multiple times. I just adore the characters you've written so much. My first read I binged the entire thing in one sitting. It genuinely feels like I'm actually there with those silly little ponies.
Good luck, writefriend. You said your wife was into the characters too? Or at least reacted to a fanmade plushie (great example of how awesome we think your work is)? that's so fucking cool if so. Gotta find me a woman like that. Hope you have a fantastic day.

It's so hard to pick between Artemis and Honor. Absolute unit of a pegasus mare who is so bubbly that it's more infectious than Covid? Who is also into some of the same kinks I am? And with epic floof to bury my head into?
Or, broken disgruntled choco mare whom I can and will fix? I'll make her relearn how to live and love. I swear anonbros. I'll make her smile again. I'll carry that baggage for her. I won't even hesitate

Conceptually with a story like this, many things that the main characters did in the show have to be toned down a bit because in real life there aren't just six people doing damn near everything in the world. While the Rainboom is impressive, even in the show it is more of a stunt than a useful military tactic, like pulling a cobra manoeuvre in the era of beyond-visual-range missiles. Probably Killfeather and his hot-shot pegasus group would be much more aware of it, as would many youngsters interested in aerobatics, but not the quaternion of a heavily-armoured armoured pegasus, a batpony, and a couple of ground-pounders.
>>42974902
Thanks for your kind words. I've read aloud much of the story to my wife; she was even occasionally fully awake for it. And she loves seeing the fanart.
Actually, some other fiction I wrote was part of our first dates. She had a long commute to school and I sent her some of my amateur fantasy fiction, which she duly printed out and read (this was in ye olden days before real smartphones).
Right now it's hard to even get away for a vacation. Longest we've taken is four days because of the needs of my father.

Brown. Because I'm boringly pragmatic, introverted and sad too! And she's generic rank-and-file infantry; my favorite!

Sparks is certainly the most bright-hearted of the four, clever and hard-working to boot, but I think there's a reasonable case for any of the other three, too.
>Earth
Disenchanted and world-weary, she was damaged by giving her unquestioning loyalty to someone who didn't deserve it, but it's clear she is still capable of being steadfast and loyal. If you can bring her the joy she needs, and show clearly you're committed to the relationship, she'll dutifully take care of anything and everything else, without complaint.
>Unicorn
Even though she's had flings for money, she seems to have been faithful to each of them in those relationships, never seeking to leave before her sugar-daddy was done with her (except in the most recent case) and never wanting to interfere with her partner's married life or thought of graduating from side ho to wife. Despite being a party girl on the surface she's very independently capable (e.g., she can sew well), she's a decorated war hero, and she's even intellectually inquisitive, though that urge is often suppressed by being forcibly overexposed to nerdy shit by her brothers. As a wife she would be an often loud-mouthed but ever-faithful advocate, the assertive and confident but still compassionate and understanding person -- a good kind of "Karen".
>Bat
She may have seen it all and done it all, but she's more than happy to share everything with you. You couldn't ask for a deadlier defender, and she'll eagerly join in with you on any activity you enjoy -- witness her learning to play tabletop games with the university student she's bonking.

I'm sorry friend, but I absolutely have to refute (You).
I just know that the batpony has a boner-inducingly sexy accent, and nothing screams "good time" like someone as skilled in acrobatics as her. Very high-quality fuckbuddy material.
Waifu material? You're right. Probably not. Would love to be friends.
The hornhead? Yeah, agreed. She seems to be turning a new leaf after her medallion received a load of jizz in her own quarters. We love to see the character development. But, eh, she's fuckbuddy material at absolute best. No problem with being friends, but she's the least attractive to me out of the quat.
Honour, though? Her loyalty and dedication is attractive. I empathize deeply with her baggage. Don't get me wrong, gun to my head I'd still pick Artemis first. But my masculinity demands that I protect Honour, including from herself. I think she deserves to be happy again, and as Gods' strongest soldier I shall be the one to help her rediscover happiness. So help me God. She's hurting so much on the inside. I would make her forget about all her problems. I'd give her the best sexy message followed by the best cunnilingus she'll ever experience, just to give her half an hour of contentment. Best friend material.
So is my duty as a man.
All that said, (You)'re absolutely correct that Artemis alone is premier waifu material. Cute, bubbly, innocent yet alluringly naughty. Floofy, closer to a humans' size than most ponies, masterwork-quality spooning material. It's strongly hinted that she's into at least occasional rough sex, and kinks like bondage. So, fucking, hot. It's always wonderful to have a partner that is into the same kinks as you. It's not a requirement or a dealbreaker, of course. I'm not THAT degenerate. But, there's something so special and so intense about passionate, crazy, primal animal sex preceded and followed by high impact snuggling and cuddling. I'd kiss every inch of her body, down the back of her spine, her thighs. I'd bite her neck and ears just the right amount of too roughly.
I'd introduce her to how fingers work and I'd finger her whilst simultaneously licking her whilst simultaneously massaging her clitty with my other hand. After foreplay I'd ravage her until she can't think, see, or trot straight. With no refractory period, she doesn't stand a chance. She will finally get to feel like a little mare for once, just as the Doctor ordered. Then (I turn into a teddy bear after sex) I'd *violently* spoon her, breathing in her sweaty scent with my face buried in her neck. I'd run my hands all over her tummy and through her mane.
Seeing as her personality is already the best out of the four (and it's not close), it's just yet another delightful cherry on top. And she's so adorably sheltered, too! As an Equestria non-native, we'd explore the world together. She represents that very rare kind of partner who excels as a friend, an ally, a wingmate, a combat partner, and a lover.
>>
>>42980240
So, as you readily see and as is extremely obvious, I agree wholeheartedly about Artemis. Best waifu material of all time.
But, I cannot help but protest that you do not give the others enough credit. They're inferior in terms of waifu-ness, but not as bad as you make it out to be.
>>
>>42980240
>Glamerspear
>No problem with being friends
Agreed. I just can't into Glamerspear as a fuck buddy, which is ironic since she's THE fuck buddy. She's something who'd be an absolute joy to cause trouble with like throwing water balloons at passersby or spray silly graffiti everywhere.
>>
>>42980691
100% agreed. Fuckbuddy status is the absolute ceiling, here. Platonic friend with an emphasis on mischief is brilliant.
Again, same with the batpony. I just think the sex would be better due to her training lol. But she’s still far too promiscuous for anything even remotely serious. Would be a fun friend, too, though. I bet she could (and would) smuggle all kinds of epic batpony artifacts from the Rookery for me…

Any suggestions on the next ELWG art commission? I think the main cast is covered pretty well, in armour and dress, maybe one of the villains or side characters like Val Kilfeather or Eb's mom Carmen?

I need to check the art again but one or all of the Valkyries or General Hoofstrong or Lieutenant Violetta would be a good option. Also wanted to say how much I love the green. I hadn't gone back and read it all in years but just finished going through the whole thing again. Thanks for all your work and dedication on it over the years, I've been following from the start and would love an update but I know life is hectic at the moment. So even if it takes years please don't give up on it.

If unicorns have magic, why do they need amour if they could just use magic to get out of harms way or just use the magic to fight back? like twilight in her gladiator fit.

>carmen speaking to her blinded, suspended son in the dungeon
that scene always stuck out to me, and i would love to see a side view of that
otherwise something of Ignacio and the Eclipses would be neat, or perhaps the Balladeer of Ghosts when he summoned shadows for Ebonshield?

Although I hate batniggers I must nominate that Sister Lucretia with her big tuffy tuff tuft and shapely behind. It would be nice to see what the Lunar caste sister robes look like. Violetta as a second choice and Sergeant Greenhound as a third if she ever joins them in the grand melee (if it ever happens).

I didn't know there were going to be bats. I'm not going to drop the green just because there are some batniggers inside of it, I'm here for the story of the quaternion's three real ponies. And it's great to see edgelord batniggers getting btfo after basically having a hundred+ years (not counting the bloody years they took to establish a society) to prep for the Equestrian invasion. Anon turned down the loose threstralfaggot too, so that's a double plus. They'll also get btfo again laterif it's ever written, which makes it a three.
So yes, I'm going to continue to read this green and I'm going to continue hating batniggers and there's nothing you can do about it.

I drew poor Cheerilee serving a rough tour in the guard, back before she became a teacher.
She received a wound to her eye, and some ponies claim that she's replaced it with a glass eye ever since.

Why humans need armor if they can just dodge bullets? Answer: because it's distracting. Attention is a finite resource. You can either dodge bullets or aim you own gun.
But I can imagine unicorns fighting armorless as a psychological tactic, in the ancient times, when bluff was still a shiny new idea. Imagine fighting a pony who's so certain in her ability to deflect arrows, swords and magic missles coming from all directions that she came to the battlefield naked. Scary.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to consult my research of available artists to figure out which to ultimately go with.

General Hoofstrong and Lt. Violetta are less established in terms of appearance; right now just generic army mares in modern dress uniforms since they're officers, with Vi being minor nobility and Hoofstrong being a promoted-from-the-ranks mustang, but I understand the desire for art of them. I would have to think about how to make them maybe a bit less generic first, like how I picked different dress uniforms for the main 3. Probably give WW2 Patton's outfit to Hoofstrong since she stole his speech.

The Carmen-Marcos scene in the Hatcheteers' Oubliette is a great cinematic idea, my only concern is that a well-done multi-character scene with background is probably going to be on the pricey side.
Ignacio or the other Eclipses makes sense, with the distinctive masks.
>>43006951
Bronzehorn right now hasn't been described much more than as a big beefy minotaur, I'd also have to think of how he dresses and presents himself. Valkyries I don't want to necessarily have drawn until we get to see them some more in the story; as you might imagine, Maj. Growler has kitted them out with all manner of magical equipment from her family's ancestral stores.

Lucretia is basically a Spanish batpony healslut without Carmen's all-white body makeup but it's an idea and would certainly be easier to draw than Carmen's "white robe on white body and white hair (purple eyes tho)". Greenhound is another relatively generic army mare at least in my head, I'd have to think of something distinct for her getup.

Sooooo is the robe literally just a white robe? I was hoping it would have more intricate designs or something cool, at least.

Her air service dress. Mmmmmm, a mare in uniform.

Bear in mind the Lunar outfits are inspired by the Spanish catholic penitent order processional outfits featuring the conical capirote hat, and that as a holy order of self-flagellating worshippers these outfits are generally plain even if the robes are silk and the various orders do have different colours (only a couple are white-on-white). At most there’s a bit of trim or an icon. I could see the Lunars having a little bit of embellishment or maybe doing the absolute plain minimum as a way of *appearing* humble and simple and poor even while they facilitate trade deals [and take a cut], distribute all the water [at a profit], run the eugenics program [with preference to the rich and powerful], and basically in complete control of society, even if they encourage everyone to think there is nominal independence within each Phase and the different guilds/temples.

And that is why armoring the leading edge could be important.
But maybe it screws up airflow and agility too much.
