>You are Nightmare Moon
>The Citadel seems bigger than what Sean had remembered
>Perhaps it is because you are taking the time to admire it
>Five cyclopean arms, each one its own megalopolis veined with hovercar highways, are attached to a sturdy ring
>Apparently, if the station is threatened, it can close these arms, forming a bullet-shaped shell that cannot be breached by any conventional force
>No offensive weaponry, though, besides anything the people of this galaxy had installed themselves
>That's why there is always a coalition fleet guarding the Citadel
>Several screens of frigates and cruisers
>A core of dreadnoughts, led by a unique Asari warship dubbed the Destiny Ascension
>While it looks to you like a frutiger aero piece turned into a warship, it would certainly give most Covenant capital ships grief in a fight

>You can still see it now far off beyond the Citadel's arms, also known as the Wards, even as you step off the courier ship onto the gangway deck
>The ring that the arms attach to is called the Presidium, where most governmental functions are housed along with the biggest hangar bays
>Most of them appear open to space, but there is a thin kinetic barrier that keeps the atmosphere inside
>You can see the projectors lined along the boxy frame of your hangar
>That is all you can take in before Sour Dough and Sepia join you
>The three of you walk down the wide and gently-sloping gangway
>A trio of Asari and a single human stand before the elevators that would take you down to the Presidium proper

>These are the first Asari you have all see in person
>Sean found them fit to be categorized as, "space babes," though he never spoke it aloud
>If it were not for the smooth, swept-back fringes on the top of their heads in place of hair, the Asari could easily be seen as blue-skinned women

>The smiling lead Asari, clad in a red and blue synthetic hobble dress, looks to be welcoming enough
>The two Asari behind her, both wearing blue armor and openly carrying pistols on their hips, are deliberately not smiling
>These are members of Citadel Security, an army in its own right
>The human, an aging man with tanned skin in an off-white two piece, stands beside the group, hands clasped in front of him
>When you approach, the lead Asari bows low
>"Greetings, Miss Moon. I am Messalina, and I will be your assistant on behalf of the Council."
>She speaks in English, so the tiny audio pod you all had put in your ears an hour ago does not have to translate
>Messalina gestures to the man,
>"This is Ambassador Udina. His embassy has been hosting your lost people for the past few months."
>You nod politely to the balding man
"I am grateful for your hospitality, Ambassador."
>His smile is only a little forced
>The many lines in his face clearly come from more than age
>"You are most welcomed. We have much to discuss, but I'm sure you want to see your people first."
>>
>>43009741
>He is at least expedient
"That would be appreciated, Ambassador."
>The Asari leads you all to the elevator, which is practically a large transparent box that can fit all of you comfortably
>Once it starts to descend into the hollow ring of the Presidium, it is clear that it has its own gravity generator acting as an inertial dampener

>Therefore the multi-directional ride is smooth and quiet enough for a conversation, which Messalina starts
>"Firstly, Miss Moon, the Council offers its condolences to your people from the invasion they have suffered."
>You look over to the Asari
>Her smile is subdued only a little
"Thank you, Messalina. How much detail did our people give you, regarding the invasion?"
>"Much. We have no records of any species that match the members of this 'Covenant,' but should any appear, you will be informed."
"Thank you."

>The ride ends right there, and your team is led through a ridiculously tall room Sean remembers as a regional headquarters for C-Sec
>There is one for each arm of the Wards, very similar to each other
>It looks as if someone had hollowed out a skyscraper filled with offices and placed a nexus of elevators to one side, then filled it with bright blue accent lighting
>On the "ground" level, in front of the busy row of elevators leading to other hangars, your party moves quickly through a customs checkpoint, complete with a short corridor of full-body scanners
>No one makes a fuss and you find yourself in another elevator

>This time Udina speaks,
>"Miss Moon, if I may ask,"
>You small smile and nod has him continue,
>"Your people told us about your banishment. Is it true that you and Princess Luna were exiled to your local moon for an entire millennium?"
>Your smile widens in spite of your own memory of those thousand years,
"It is true, though at that time Princess Luna and I were one and the same. It is only recently that I became my own character, so to speak."
>The man's eyes gain a twinkle in them as he adopts a thoughtful pose
>"And how did that come about?"
"Princess Luna created me again to save S-"
>You almost say his name
>On instinct, you act as if you just remembered something surprising
>That kiss out of nowhere certainly was
"To save a dear friend."
>You lips tingle as you remember

>The Ambassador answers with sympathy,
>"I'm sorry, Miss Moon. I did not mean to pry."
>You have an idea to pivot away from your little Spartan
"You needn't worry. He is well, and in fact is on board the Nocturnal assisting in finding both of our people alongside your Captain Anderson."
>The Ambassador takes the offered way out and smiles sharply,
>"Captain Anderson."
>That sounds like there's a history of friction between the two there
>"He's a good man, Miss Moon. If anyone can rescue our people, it's him."
"I have no doubt."
>The only question is: can Sean handle whatever surprises The Computer might have in that compound?
>>
>>43009745
>The elevator opens up to the Presidium proper
>The first sight to greet you is the strip of artificial blue sky that runs along the "bottom" of the inner portion of the hollowed ring
>Hovercars fly under it, many landing and taking off from the outer half where you are standing
>Across a wide, white-tiled walkway is a blue and silver hovercar with an extended cabin
>A hover limousine?
>Many C-Sec personnel have already made a clear cordon to the vehicle for your party to use
>Flanking either side is a crowd of all different kinds of species
>All of them are wearing fancy clothes sporting bold colors
>Your black business suits seem muted and simple compared to them
>But it is not the suits that are making many stare
>They've probably seen plenty of the other ponies, but not an alicorn
>You keep your chin up and eyes forward as you are led to the limo
>You cannot help but let your ears swivel around, trying to pick up individual conversations in the talkative crowd
>The tiny audio pods, as advanced as they are, cannot handle this many voices and give several sentences mashed together in a jumble of phrases
>At the very least, you can tell there are a lot of questions
>Many record your passing with their omni-tool
>No one tries to ask you questions, though
>Until,
>"Excuse me, ma'am! Is it true that you have eaten children?"
>There they are
>The vultures
>No matter where you go, any civilization that broadcasts news has field reporters
>And there are always those who see fit to make utter fools of themselves
>There are a few of them, and that first question lets loose a deluge of others
>Most are accusatory, wanting to get a reaction out of you
>Should you give them something?
>Within the group, there is one younger woman with short dark hair who does not point an omni-tool at you or shout out questions
>She is just looking at you
>Studying you
>That makes you respond
>Just before you enter the limo, you turn your head to look directly at her
>She blinks in surprise
>You give her a warm smile and a nod
>That sends the press into a frenzy
>Some of them are already looking at the poor girl with envy before you turn back around and climb inside

>The inside is dark, but spacious and able to fit everyone
>The two C-Sec officers climb into the pilot and copilot seats and run through the start-up procedure
>Udina asks, unable to contain his disgust,
>"Do you have press like that back home, Miss Moon?"
>You shake your head,
"Not as many, but trust me when I say: some things are universal."
>Or multiversal
>Eh, semantics

>When the hovercar lifts off, you all get to see the whole of the Presidium
>The outer part of the ring's insides sport pristine white buildings that host embassies, corporate headquarters, expensive restaurants, and other high-life amenities
>One large river and small green parks run in the middle of it all, curving upward to disappear behind the fake bright sky
>>
>>43009750
>After some travel, you arrive at a collection of multistory buildings linked together by a single roof
>There is a small landing pad on the top
>When you land and exit the limo, it is quiet enough for you to hear the rushing of the river in front of the buildings
>The human ambassador leads you to a long opening in the roof, where gentle stairs lead down to the next floor
>The hallways are pristine and white
>The doors slide open with an intricate design
>After some turns, Udina stops in front of a sign-less door

>An armed Alliance marine, this one's armor a deep green with brown trimmings, stands at attention to one side
>Udina asks,
>"Any developments, serviceman?"
>"Squall tried to fly away again, sir. Misses Scope caught him."
>The Ambassador's, "Alright," comes out as an exasperated sigh
>He turns back to you,
>"He and the other children have escaped quite a few times to go exploring. Easy to do when some of you can fly or know a few magic spells."
>You want to smile, but a sudden thought of the Devil's Hand attaches a weight to your chest
>You have to give him a fake smile,
"Let's see if a word from me will help."
>The Ambassador nods, then palms a scanner next to the marine
>There is a chime, and the door to the ambassador's office slides apart
>He lets the three of you in first

>His office is spacious, fanning outward until it reaches a long balcony facing the Presidium ring
>His desk is in the middle of it all, with a personal computer terminal dominating most of it
>Flanking either side of the door is a circular table with lounging chairs
>Next to the balcony are three hologram projectors bolted to the metal floor
>To the left are large-leaf plants held in squared pots
>By the balcony is an open-air conference room separated by walls of translucent glass
>You take in all of this in an instant, because the next is dominated by the children

>Lined up along the balcony, perched on moved chairs, are five fillies and three colts
>Pegasus, unicorn, and earth
>They are all looking over it, talking over each other with two different arguments
>That stops when one filly looks over her shoulder to see you walking through the doorway
>She points at you and screams,
>"It's Nightmare Moon!"
>The children all turn and scream
>The earth ponies scatter
>All of the pegasi extend their wings to fly away
>A couple of the unicorn fillies even light up her horns to cast a spell
>The half-dozen adults sprinkled throughout the room all scramble onto their hooves
>You shut it all down immediately with a flash of your horn

>You grab the launching pegasi, the running earth ponies, and the spell casting unicorns, and magically zip their mouths shut
>You lift them all up and keep them hovering as you walk around the desk
>The adults glance nervously between you and the floating children, unsure
>When you pass the desk, you bring the children down onto the floor in a line facing you
>>
>>43009758
>One on the end is still screaming himself blue behind your zipper
>First you, then the rest of the children stare at him
>When he almost passes out, you take off his zipper so he can gulp in air
"Are you done?"
>When he does not continue to scream, you look to the others
"Are you all done? Because I need to tell you all something important."
>Some nod
>Some are too afraid to do anything

>You release them all
>Sour Dough and Sepia walk up to flank you, while the adults gather around all of you
"Princess Celestia has sent me to bring you all back to Equestria. Soon, a ship will arrive and we will all go back home."
>One filly raises her hoof, now scared for another reason,
>"Those aliens aren't still there, are they?"
>You shake your head
"We kicked their butts and sent them all away. But there were a lot of them to kick, which is why we took so long to head this way."
>Some of the children smile at that
>One of the adults, a mare who is a merchant sailor, asks,
>"Nightmare Moon, ma'am. What ship? We didn't juryrig an airship, did we?"
>You grin at her,
"We have a corvette now. An alien corvette. It has the same basic role as one of ours: small, light, fast. Only this one is meant for the void. It will be some time before it arrives, but until then, I am here to ensure no one bothers any of you."

>Messalina, no doubt still smiling as broadly as she was when you first saw here, approaches from behind,
>"Miss Moon, the Council has appointed a meeting for you within thirty minutes."
>You turn to ask at her something, but Ambassador Udina's murderous glare at the back of the Asari's head stops you
>Politics abound
>And you cannot discuss anything substantial in front of the children
"I understand."
>You look to Sepia and Sour Dough,
"I will go on my own to meet them."
>Then you turn on the kids, who were about to lose interest,
"Listen to Sour Dough and Sepia here. If they tell me that you have been giving them trouble, then I will have words with you on our way back home. Understand?"
>They all nod
>Some less vigorously than the others
>Squall barely nods, his gaze shifting
>You hope either of your assistants caught that
"Good."

()()()

>You are Aden B103
>"Spartan Aden?"
>Captain Mizzen
>You turn away from the holographic display showing the new planet and look down
>"I need to discuss something with you."
>You complete her sentence in your head,
>'In private.'
>You let her lead you to a secluded part of the corvette's bridge, under the massive patterned windows showing the blank black of space lit by a nearby star
>With your back to the bulkhead so "nopony" can read the captain's lips, you kneel so she doesn't have to strain her neck looking up at you

>Captain Mizzen whispers to you,
>"I'm concerned about the recent behavior of Spartan Sean."
>You nod in agreement
>"Has he ever been as morose as this?"
>You think back to Camp Currahee, and shake your head
"He was quiet during training, but not like this."
>>
>>43009765
>"It has to do with wherever this Devil's Hand cult came from."
>You nod again
>"Has he told you anything more?"
>You tilt your helmet to one side
"Vaguely, which isn't like him two days ago."
>He was cramming entire lectures into your ears ever since you recovered
>For the past wake cycle, it has turned into you asking akwardly about this particular part of his past
>"He has been avoidant about this, then."
"Partially. He told me that he was captured by a computer for a time. It somehow sent its followers throughout the universes he had been to. Remembering more than that gave him trouble."
>The old captain rubs her chin, then realizes something horrible
>"Spartan Aden, could he have been mind-controlled?"
"Mind-controlled?"
>A bad memory makes her shudder
>"There were villains during my career who used certain magical weapons. A few of them attacked the mind in different ways. I'm not as familiar with electronics and computers as magical artifacts, so is it possible that a computer could control somepony's mind if it's powerful enough?"
>You remember your time working freelance
>Certain megacorps were warring with each other for monopolies
>One such monopoly was neural-based virtual reality
>Some projects went too far, even for you
"It's possible, certainly with direct access to the brain."
>Something connects in Captain Mizzen's thoughts
>Her look goes from shock to horror, then right down to a deep sadness
>"Oh Celestia, I hope I'm wrong."

>On the other side of the bridge, one of the doors slide open
>You both look to see Sean walking in, fully armored
>His helmet doesn't turn your way as he walks slowly, but purposely, towards the hologram
>The deck crew keeps well out of his way
>As soon as he is at the circular pit, he reaches out and manipulates the projection
>The view zooms in all the way from a view of the blue and green globe to a spot on the equator
>There is a massive archipelago, with several mountainous islands
>While this galaxy's projectors would show orange boxes and wire frames, the corvette's projectors show everything
>It also labels everything to the point of being detrimental
>Multiple watch officers sort through the data, trying to organize the flood of information
>When Sean manipulates the view again, the hologram rotates as it descends to the surface
>When the multilayered pile of translated labels stops growing, Sean moves it all to the side to uncover the compound
>The block of black skyscrapers sits in the middle of what one would call The Villain's Island Base (tm)
>Jungle forests broken up by the overbearing cone of a volcano
>A few small pieces of hand-built infrastructure lay along the sandy coast, but no activity could be seen on the water
>A small courier ship sits on a large raised pad that overhangs one of the matte black outer walls
>You take all of that in before you notice what Sean is moving lingering labels away from
>>
>>43009767
>The central skyscraper, which is also the tallest by several stories, sport a hot red inverted pentagram on each side

>You look to Captain Mizzen
>You're not nearly as well-read as Jane or Sean, but you still know the concept of sleeper agents, willing or not
>You hate the idea of your brother being one, but if The Computer was as evil as you surmised then you need to be careful
>You whisper to her,
"I'll keep an eye on him."
>You stand up and walk over to Sean
>He brings the labels back, one-by-one
>You see several labels of "Sensor, Optical" and "Remote Transmitter" on the lip of the volcano, along with several sprinkled throughout the jungle
>He glances at you briefly
>"These cameras will be more for internal security."
>He brings several labels to the top of the central tower
>"The more sophisticated sensors are inside the compound itself."
"Why? Is it a lab?"
>Sean crosses his armored arms, head bowed
>You almost miss him muttering,
>"More like a playground."
"Oh."
>"But we have time. If this compound is run in any way similar to the ones that were popping up at the start of the War Against Machines, then they won't harm any of the new influx for several days. It makes the betrayal all-the-more sweeter."
>Both of you look around and see the uneasy expressions of the crew who had heard that
>Sean speaks to all of them,
>"That's the kind of people we are dealing with, here. Nothing but malice."
>He lays a hand on his sage green chest plate,
>"And I mean my kind of malice. Not yours. Yours maxes out at torture and death, and there are fates so much worse."
>He turns to face all on the bridge, who are now at morbid attention
>"That is why you need to give no one running that place any chance. No mercy for them. You may think me a myriad of bad words for such judgment, but there comes a point where judgment and execution is necessary."
>He hooks a thumb over his shoulder at the compound,
>"And I assure you that these people are well past that point."

>There is silence as Sean takes a deep breath and looks to Captain Mizzen
>"Once the Normandy arrives, I'll give a final brief to everyone."
>"Didn't you want to remain unseen?"
>"I'll have one of the unicorns disguise me as a pony during the briefing so there's no last-minute confusion. When we get to ground, Aden and I will stay out of sight and work behind the scenes unless things get out of control. I'll deal with whatever crap we get if the secret gets out before we secure everyone and everypony."
>>
>>43009771
>"Do you think the Normandy will stop working with us if they find you out?"
>Sean shakes his head,
>"If Captain Anderson hears us out, then I'm not worried about coming to an understanding with him. As for the ground team: if Alliance marines are like all the other marines I've worked with, then as long as we do our jobs, pull our weight, and cover their backs, they'll do the same."
>Captain Mizzen nods, smiling,
>"Then let's get ready. It’s been years since I’ve taken down a pirate cove."
