what's with the weirdos who inhabit this general? just a bunch of uncreative shit ideas for /prod/ albums or whatever and some schizophrenics obsessed with "analog" gear.
talk about latest plugin releases. are you even experimenting in your DAW? at the bare minimum play with some presets and post it as a vocaroo.
thread rules: only post vocaroos of your music, do not shill.

if you listen to drums and bass without the synths, do you really envision this track with those synths on it????
like listen to what the bass and drums is putting into the vibe of the track, and you paired them with those synths?

Stick a MIDI pickup on it and use an inbox to a DI box (if there is an extra good ground in the deal that is), run two cables or use a pickup that blends. Then laptop to a good reference line amp then a speaker.

I so randomly played and never paid a bit of attention to do anything. Now that I am to some degree it's building but that's good. I'm used to old shit so the new tech is SO handy.
As a hint, when I went to college, we cut tape with a razor.
>>
>>129228891
you need to figure out if you want to put out music or see streaming numbers go up. if you have a project that's done and you're proud of it then you should already have uploaded it somewhere for people to hear. if you are going to be discouraged by the fact nobody is listening to your songs i would not continue with it as a hobby. you create music because it brings you joy. there are literally millions of talented people who will never make a dime off their music because the market is flooded but they still make music every day because it makes them happy. those are the most successful musicians
>>
>>129228932
Personally, I sold off a ton of old gear because I don't play live anymore and likely back is too bad to consider it. So I reinvested in other things and one was a nice direct to DAW/FX/Input chain. Then a 6/12 string for the versatility.
So I'm as ready as anything and I'm not short on the ability to write, I'm just now setting up track notes to DO it.

very quick take, delivery a little low-energy because housemates in the next room, BUT - I slapped together this acoustic thing after I had the chorus rolling around in my head for a while, and the weird little 5+9/8 bridge kinda tumbled out of me.
is it worth finishing/refining?

guys, what are your thoughts on dawless for demo-making and coming up with ideas? I love how versatile and capable DAWs are but they tend to disrupt my flow when trying to write stuff. I'm thinking about getting a drums machine + sampler; and only using the DAW for polishing my turds.
>>
>>129229333
I was thinking of doing the exact same thing.
For me, it's potentially getting a Seqtrak to act as a sketch pad that I could use anywhere: in bed, on my couch... just comfy jamming and recording without the glow and distractions of my computer screen.

I'm not a pro, but you can expect more or less the same functionality, the difference is where stuff is located and how many click something requires. Don't thing too much about it, think of it in tasks (e.g. "how to program a drum pattern", "how to record bass") and watch yt videos about how to do those on the DAW of your interest
>>
>>
>>129230936
I chose FL for a similar reason (want to record guitar, but also learn synths and "electronic" music) and I'm happy with it. Some people say certain DAWs have workflows that are more suited to certain genres, but most, if not all of them, can do it all. I love FLs piano roll for when I want to do midi, and I've made a template that makes recording guitar parts quick and easy (literally 2 clicks needed when I load it up to start recording ideas). I tried Ableton as my very first DAW and didn't like it cause I found it too unintuitive and ugly, but now that I understand DAWs, I think it does some things a little better (not enough for me to switch, though).

active WIP times mean i can listen to anything (1-2 new (to me) releases a week preferable (if i can tell it’s not for me after a couple songs i insta-drop though. never suffer)).
no actives mean i have to listen to something for the purpose of getting references though.
yes i have autism. when i wasn’t making music consistently i flew down /moo/ charts and shit all the time though listening to 1 or 3 new albums a day i miss that shit man damn

you need to tighten that melody and dial it in properly, cause as is, it sounds like the kind of experimental meandering you might do when trying to figure out an actual melody.
>>
>>129238045
mm i like the melody, it gives me melancholy and that was the intention. was thinking more input to continue the track instead of just repeating the intro at the end. the part of the melody i would change would probably be the second part of the chorus where it goes up a minor third

To add to this, once I started the song, it seemed like there were like five different things trying to grab my attention.
But, now, that I actually also read >>129238068
There indeed seems to be very little to no progression as is.
Now, one thing you can do is think about a song that you like, which has the kind of build up etc that you would like, then get inspired by it.
>>129241203
>>129241230
It's pretty sweet.
Note: Fuck the rules, if you prefer it without a bass, so be it.
Still, doesn't hurt to try.
On the side: Much room for improvement in the production. Not that it's bad, but, you know, could have more punch, and so on.

Needs better mixing. I can only hear the bass in my left ear. Drums sound like they don't belong. Good for a first attempt, don't give up sir.
>>
>>129243848
i didn’t actually watch it because i was already implementing basically the same concept before “ctz” became an established thing, so i don’t know what she says specifically i only skimmed the text thing to get to the few technical bits and some clarification on what she was talking about (e.g you should reach for a limiter for sustained sounds or anything with “delicate” high end rather than clipping usually).
the “nuance” you should walk away with is really more in observing how things stack once you start trying mix with this concept in mind.
i.e once you’re looking at how loud certain sounds sum together you’ll think more critically about what sounds *need* to be played and what you can cut away, what actually needs to be smashed and what can remain dynamic, what sounds should actually be processed together and not, and so on.
i think people generally misunderstand it to be a paint by numbers thing and don’t really “get” the whole point of it beyond “max loud xD” honestly.
… oh but yeah that’s pretty much it

My first impression, everything but the bass is dead center right now, the bass, itself, well...
You can start fixing that, EQ some perhaps, some effects, use that space. Not bad otherwise.

I think it’s great, I really dig the vocal samples and overall atmosphere. Reminds me of Andy Stott.
I’d work on the drums more, they are pretty muffled and lack energy. You have a lot of low end, it would be nice to contrast it with some clicky percussion or more sharp snare sound. You don’t have to fill up the higher part of the spectrum and turn it into a dance track, but some groovy elements, soaked in reverb, fading in and out, could make this way more interesting (to me at least).
thanks for the feedback! I’m >>129242422

like the other anon said, kick waaaay too loud and distorted. Also, the kick and bass are very wide, which is weird, feels like there’s a void in the center. I’m not sure what you were going for, but there’s a good reason we usually keep it mono and centered. The rest is perfect, lovely synths, it’ll be a sweet track if you fix the low end.

Neat. To me, works a bit better together than https://vocaroo.com/1cbAqd7eIuID , but, it's your song, for you. Only thing that really matters.
You wanted to add melody as in another voice/synth, or add/extend more to the existing parts? To me, again, it seems to work pretty well.
Well, I like it. I'm used to totally different stuff, not that it matters, but for reference, it usually goes something like this:

4/10 for effort. The mix starts off well and has a good sense of space for the intro, but seems to go flat as it continues. The harsher arp sound that plays over everything is not very nice, especially when it kicks in just after the intro. I would remove that entirely, or choose a different sound - I think it's that the detuning is a bit too much.

Thanks. Yeah, the arp won't go anywhere for multiple reasons, but I appreciate the...actually rather constructive input.

Thank you very much. I lost identity with this track a bit but now I have some reference, I'll have to check out Stott.
Good idea on the percussion. I have all my current percussion grouped as one right now and I might have compressed it too much and also EQ'd it a bit off. If I may ask do you think the breakdown towards the end could use something still or is it good like it is?

Just get an MPC and an old workstation keyboard. MPC is so nice and easy and handy to use, laying down tracks, putting things together, editing. I really like the nu-MPC for this even better than classic ones (I also have the 500, 2000, 2000XL).
Workstation keyboard will have all kinds of sounds, you can get all crazy with editing them and whatever or just use presets for noodling. MPC is already your sampler. Old workstation $250 or so.

I did this in about 2 hours. It was fun to write, fun to play a few times, but practicing music is boring so I just did a few takes and left it at that:
https://voca.ro/1dy4pMpej9re
>>129229054
I appreciate the beautiful fingerstyle, good work on that. Compositionally it's good, the vocal performance is hard to understand but it characterizes a crazed/pained vibe well.
>>129245532
This is fun for a jam session, but for anything else it needs a lot of compositional tightening up. I was sad the intro hook never came back.
>>129246410
This is fine with a few critiques: They keys coming in overtake the mix and take away from the rest of the song. Besides the sound being too resonant, their melody largely noodles and clogs the whole arrangement. The call/response at 1:50 is nice, though. Vocal melody's largely verse-focused, leaving it melodically and rhythmically inconsistent throughout. Work in some hooks or maybe a chorus structure to add some consistency.
>>
>>129254784
What kind of mixing have you done on your bass, if any and how was it recorded? It is completely out of place here. It gets buried by the rest of the instruments and the playing sounds a little sloppy as well.
>>
>>129256277
>practicing music is boring so I just did a few takes and left it at that
Yeah, it shows, sounds like shit with obvious mistakes, discordant chords and the lead mostly just following the backing notes. Really undermines your reddit-spaced feedback about melody and consistency. If you don't take your own music seriously why should anyone take your 'critiques' on theirs seriously?

Working on a video game soundtrack
Here's an ambient to synthwave tune
https://voca.ro/1dtjNhhWr2x9
Here's an ambient tune
https://voca.ro/1cgt8IMFwZiw
I'm having a hard time figuring out what the studio wants exactly: they sent me a bunch of reference tracks (neo-80s synthwave mostly, with big drums and everything), saying that they wanted that but dark (it's a thriller type thing). Then when I sent them that first tune they told me it was too jazzy (?) and it wasn't what they had it mind. So I'm trying again with that second one which is more of a typical soundtrack sound, with more subtle nods to the 80s synth sound. Pray for me

You were probably not very good or creative at 17, you just thought you were - just like when you're drunk and performing music and you think you're on fire, but you listen to the recording the next day and it's shit. Music is work, creativity is work. Work on your skills and you will be much more creative than you were
>>
>>129257059
I was genuinely much better at 17 than I am now. I used to get spotlight articles written about me in local publications as a "artist to watch." I hit some kind of wall and everything after age 22 has been absolute shit. even now when I go through my shit I can easily see a sharp decline in quality around that age. idk what happened.

im reading a book about pop hits right now. it is a bit like "the manual" but written by a music professor and deals with the question of what makes a pop hit a pop hit.
for example he was able to predict quite a few winners in the eurovision song contest, mostly on the basis of their chord progressions. (he predicted euphoria would win and Heroes, the songs are quite different, i dont know the other songs but i would never have been able to predict these would win anything)
one of the interesting passages apart from the sheet music in there is that he writes that pop music hits are very stylistic.
it is a bit of a trueism, but when you think about it it isnt.
take someone who produces hits. like anyone who had a hit spree.
all there songs were stylistically "them". lady gaga is lady gaga, bruno mars is bruno mars. timbalands beats were recognizable too.
bruno mars doenst make a song and it is less stylistic and more successfull, he is maxxing out bruno mars. adele always sings like adele.
the difficulty is about being memorable + original and unique + doing the thing that works. i think if one of these factors is missing then it just wont be good.

>$160 for a virtual sampler
that's fucktarded, you can get an Akai S2000 for $100 more than that and it will kick the balls off the stupid VST
there are infinite free sampler VSTs, too
https://www.izmar.nl/
>>
>>
>>129262360
It's very full featured, the S2000 is based. It has a great sound and you can do some tricky shit with it using MIDI. Probably stuff your VST can't do. Anyway PAYING for some gay VST sampler makes no sense at all. Why would you do such a thing? And I just looked - you can get the S2000 for even less than $200 on eBay. There are quite a few up there.
There is simply no excuse to start paying to make music on your computer when most of the good tools are free. Heck with csound and pd you can basically make any sound you can imagine with a relatively small investment in time to get to know these systems. If you're seriously thinking of dropping nearly $200 on a sampler, there had better be an insanely compelling reason to get the payware one over say, an S2000. What if the license server goes down? It happens all the time. Look at all the great music created with the S2000 from way back, until today. People love it STILL. At $200 or less it's a steal.
People who create music and get on the payware / subscription-ware treadmill will find at some point that all the things they bought won't work on a new OS, the ancient files won't open, a license server goes down, etc. and eventually they are abandoned. Of course this happens with MIDI hardware too but the abandonment doesn't cause your stuff to magically stop working one day.
I would say if you're going for all in the box computer music and you spend more than $100 all told including your DAW, VSTs, and everything else all put together you're doing it wrong. You SHOULD be using all Free software if possible. Software that can not be taken away from you.

Every pro doesn't use VST. In fact I doubt that most do these days. Some do. But many prefer hardware. You're not a pro though, you don't even know what you want out of a sampler or how to work one.
VSTs are a lame investment. You can't rely on them down the road, something important to an ACTUAL pro. Unless they're Free of course. You're that plugin sellin' jeet ain't ya lol? You're in every thread, like it's your job to just hawk VSTs and Ableton in every thread. That's gay.

You can literally just grab free multisampled instruments of every variety right off archive.org. Professional grade sample packs right from the sampler companies themselves and others. Good enough for all the professionals back in the day to make all the tunes you can imagine.

this probably sounds counter intuitive but i think you need to be way more aggressive with your eq and automating out low/mid content (e.g on the reverbs) so that each hit has a spectral contrast on impact.

vangelis says any amount of attention is bad for the creative pursuit. if you read above one anon has been damaged by being exposed to attention and losing creativity in exchange.
if you receive attention you want more of it. you will do the same thing again. this can be very bad in art.
>>
>>129272539
this topic actually warrants a serious conversation but i don't people here have the scope or experience here beyond personal experience or "social media bad" to really talk about it
*i personally* think making art (solely) in pursuit of attention is "bad," or at the very least unhealthy, BUT there are several sects of it that are intrinsically tied to things that will inherently draw attention (i.e anything made to provoke or make you question a hot-topic issue that people tend to get emotional about)
MOREOVER: you are failing to communicate as an artist if you don't understand the audience, how you are being perceived, and what barriers there are to having your desired effect, so naturally those are things you must end up thinking about at some point. (to clarify because i already see somebody seething about this, take for example the lowest level: "i want to make something *sad,* does it *seem* [to other people] sad?" and you move up from there).
imo, all vanity aside (this topic usually invites some discussion of motivations and moral up-rightness even though that's a different boring discussion) the real danger in caring about attention is the tendency to craft things that are ephemeral or *extremely* context dependent, to the point where they cannot be appreciated outside of that moment as a work in a (relative) vacuum.
