need feedback on song structure for this demo I'm working on
not finished obviously, still figuring it out
>>129278368
>thoughts on my impressionist space ambient track?
It's too dry for the style, add a reverb (or extend the tail of the reverb) on the piano; gate the reverb if you need to to avoid "washiness". The piano tone itself might also be a bit bright/compressed/thin sounding for the style as well. I like the low synth tho, particularly at around the 3 min mark. Most of the mix sounds too dry.
btw, why are you using Audacity for this?
>>129277942
why does the mix change @1:21?
It sounds better at that point, aside from the drums being a bit quiet/weak (a problem throughout the mix)
I think I'm hearing some issues with timing too, particularly with the bass like at 0:38, if you want something more danceable you'll need to tighten the groove. Also, improve the drum mix as I'm not feeling the drums as much as I should (snare especially sounds too soft)
I don't have any vocal advice sorry, I'm not a singer.
>>
>>129278693
Sick groove. I think the drums are too loud and the snare is distracting. Guitar part could be played better. Keyboard part is cool you could turn it up. Bass seems loud the whole song. Good stuff overall
>>
>>
>>129278693
>btw, why are you using Audacity for this?
thank you for advice. I only used Audacity for cutting of parts of track, both piano and synths are made in supercollider/tidal. Basic tidalcycles "superpiano" but i think about using salamandra grandpiano SFZ, nicer sounding i guess but harder to use.
I recorded loops to wav, and then put wav (or will use orbit/link/JACK technology) to arrange fragments in DAW in certain way. I am not yet sure about which DAW to use yet, i use linux so no ableton available. I was thinking either Bitwig or Reaper

not sure if this is a good thread for this:
pretty new to audio production, I'm trying to figure out a way to make a brown noise static lower in volume proportional do the volume of an instrument with some attack inertia so it feels like the instrument is "emerging" in and out of the static and interacting with it rather than just playing over it. any way to make an input blend or interact with static noise would be appreciated, I'm just experimenting right now

Should I get Elektron Model: Cycles or Elektron Digitone if I want to make back ground music for my game?
I can get Digitone for $400usd or Model:Cycles for $200usd
basically I would want something where I can make/program the songs on the device, then I can send it onto my PC to arrange on the DAW, and finally send it to someone on fiverr to do the mixing.
The big downside on the Model:Cycle is I read it cannot send each track to PC, but there's a program that can do that for $50usd, so if I get that the Model:Cycles will still be $150usd cheaper
thanks, sorry if this is not the right thread for this question.

I want this to be the year that I learn Live, but I also wanted to get jacked and have sex for the first time.
I know doing a bit every day is better than binging on weekends... I just feel like I have enough free time for all of this.

Its okay im the 404 anon if you remember me. Havent posted here in over a year or so because i wasn't producing. I spent my free time learning bass and theory. I definitely was still trying maybe once every 2-3 weeks to make something in ableton. However I spent majority of the time jamming with others and learning songs/theory. I only started using the sampler regularly about 3 weeks ago. Having a better ear makes sampling easier for me and I needed that practice before I could use the 404 effectively.

That is true, the advice here is hit or miss and anything experimental is hard. I still havent really gotten the hang making my music sound experimental. Outside of a few FX's its genuinely a really hard task. Its easy to make stuff that sounds weird but to have work as well is something not a lot of people can do.
>>
>>129302568
yeah i feel like people generally don't get that being good at making "weird" sounds without it being random, and then being able to actually sort the results is a whole separate pursuit, even if you're already well versed making music outside of "traditional" composition
>>
>>129299970
Cycles:
>FM drum machine that can make synth tones and some pad sounds
Digitone:
>FM synth that can make drum sounds
both have similar sequencers, Digitone has more control over LFO
Cycles is 6 track, each track is mono. Digitone is 4 track but can have up to 8 total notes play at once.
Both can send full audio and midi to your computer, Digitone with OverBridge, Cycles with that program you mentioned.
Basically, do you want something more immediate but a little more limited in sound design? Go Cycles. Do you want something with a lot of depth to it but needs time to get everything how you want? Go Digitone.
They're both good choices, Digitone highly benefits from a drum machine or sampler/DAW for drums.

I would say bass and guitar if you can play both. I only know bass and guitar is out of my league. However i started on piano and even though i dont know any songs on it i would still say its the most vital. midi opens up a whole world and most full size digital keyboards come with good sounds

continuous bass?
what else can basso continuo could mean? duh.
And i disagree bass does not make a song it adds to it. You know what is fantastic when the piano bass melody is done with an actual bass it sounds great, you still gotta find the notes on the piano though. The piano hard carries most music, if you want to find melody you go to the piano. It mogs all instruments. It's the Empress of Musical instruments.

>Metal/Trash
Can you guys tell me what you think about the sound balance of my mix? It's way more bass heavy than what's usually made in that genre. Some days I like it because it's closer to the sound I'm aiming for, but at times I'm like "that prod fucking sucks".
Only had positive thoughts so far but I'm not sure. I have another mix that is less bass heavy but there's no energy so I guess I don't have the skills to make it not bass heavy. Any other input welcomed.

>Metal/trash
Certified headbanger classic. Anon, this is sick. I think the mix is great.
Sorry I can't really give any good input, only thrash I've listened to is metallica and Pantera and I think those bands are good in spite of their production.
>>
>>
>>
>>129308795
>Can you guys tell me what you think about the sound balance of my mix?
It seems a bit lopsided and inconsistent. I find the overall mix a bit thin, like there is not enough weight to the riffs. Listening on headphones with some more bass makes it sound better, but your rhythm guitar tone seemingly has very little low-end (or is too far back sometimes) and the bass is left to do all the heavy lifting in that area. There's just no heft and nothing is hitting like I feel it should. Also the way the lead comes in and out isn't very smooth in places, sounds too separated in some sections. Especially noticeable on the small lick at the end, it sounds too up front and disconnected from the other elements. Although in other places it sounds great and fits right in. Not a fan of the drums at all, but mostly I think it's just how noticeably 'VST/Sample' the snare sound is, doesn't have enough velocity variation (1:28 section especially). All that said, I like the composition and your playing seems pretty good, some cool ideas in there.

threw this together with vocals in mind, but couldn't find a good acapella to fit it yet. What's yall's thoughts tho? Is it simple enough to make a vocal shine, yet bouncy enough to make ya move?
>>129309413
pretty neat anon, i really love the second half with the pizz. Gonna be real though, i think some timpani or some deep percussion would go hard at some of the transition points.
>>129312699
its too cut up, especially @0:10, it needs some sort of white noise or background slight static to not make it so jarring. It'll ebb n flow better. Overall fun tho
>>129314539
cool sound but a bit too wide for my tastes. i could see it going hot in a set tho, just needs the rest of it ;)
>>129314825
i agree with the other anon and will add on that its a bit too muffled with feeling like its intended to be muffled. Creatively i do like the direction and the general aesthetic. Get some raspy washed out stomp box vocals on it and you'd have something really interesting
>>
>>
>>129315462

>>
>>129316058
i was with you until the section two minutes in completely threw it, and then when you went back i started paying more attention and realized that none of the vocals were sticking. honestly they’re just kinda there.
i don’t know polvo, but im not hearing husker du in this at all; obviously it is very sonic youth though.
i dont know how to word this but i feel like *on paper* the idea is solid, yet the dynamics of how you choose to play (some of it is overplayed to the point of interfering with the potential groove) aren’t coming together to make the riffs memorable. it’s very pretty and sounds good but if everything locked in on a more distinct rhythm of accents it would sound *GOOD* iykwim
>>
>>129316058
The layered vocals are cool. 1:30 and 3:50 are standout parts. The vocals are fine you should turn it up a bit though. You need some bass of course and some variation in the drums. The song "drags on" for too long and ends up boring me. I think you could condense a lot of it.
You have a fine singing voice and it fits the instrumental pretty well.
>>
>>129316202
Yea I know what you’re talking about. The phrases are unconventional length and the vocals are multimeters with the chorus. But due to the laid back vibe it’s less intrigueing and kinda puzzling.
These kinda things are common with polvo and sy though. Kinda chugging along nonspecific melodies that come and go. I guess I thought the vocal harmonies sounded a lil husker du in style. Thanks for the feedback
>>
>>129316234
Right on. I can understand dragging along, I do find those apply to some of the bands I like also so not too unexpected. I’ll try to do some more riff building to spice it up. I just thought it came together kinda smoothly. Do you think changing the outro to its own riffs and groove would be enough difference? This is just a demo for a more proper tracking and mix
>>
>>
>>129315924
Yeah it's meant to be somewhat muffled by clamping down on the mid highs to be more chillsynth. As for vocals I haven't meddled with that yet since I'm still a novice with this whole music production.
>>
>>129316341
I want to echo the other anon's post and say that up until 2:00 your track "works" for me composition wise. You should get rid of that odd time breakdown after that first chorus. Focus on your whole rhythm section and not just your rhythm guitar(s). Your riffs aren't memorable and that's fine. When it's just two rhythm guitars noodling in two different ears with a simple drum beat for most of the song it ends up boring me. Cut out the fat, focus on the other aspects of your rhythm section, maybe add some leads when you're not singing and I think it'll be a lot more engaging.
I think you have something that could be really special here. Try and make those choruses more explosive too, they are the best part of the song in my opinion.

>>
>>129316058
I feel like the other anons are missing the Polvo side of this, so are getting more thrown off by that 2min mark. I'm only familiar with Exploding Drawings, but I can hear a lot of the influence, including in the vocals, almost to the point where it feels a bit too on the nose for me, personally. What >>129316202 said about the dynamics sums up the main problems, though. I feel like this is a very difficult style to pull off to make everything sound cohesive, but you're getting there.

It's a drop A# yeah. That's a good point on cymbals as I already bumped them up as at first they were crushed in parallel compression. I had them clearer at some point but it would swallow all the energy. Maybe I can bump them just a little more.
>>129311696
>but your rhythm guitar tone seemingly has very little low-end
True. I ended up making the guitar higher to make place for the bass but now the bass takes so much space.
I'll experiment with a higher velocity randomness for the drums.

Phone demo of a new song, kind of a modal bluesy thing.
Can’t tell if the actual songwriting part is unfinished or if it’s just a short song.
Lyrics because mic position was dogshit.

There’s a vacant role.
Vacancies must fill.
Parts don’t make a whole.
There’s a you inside me I must kill.

Nibbled away just like you would. New blood.
Like cures like cures like.
Slept with a guy who falls faster than me.

eq is all you need, but if you're struggling, look at phasing on the low end with the bass itself. It really should be mono below 150 Hz. You can also simply duck it with sidechaining too. KHS compactor is free.
>>
>>129321123
For the EQ'ing as anon said above, check that your other tracks don't have any unwanted low end frequencies that you could cut back (sensibly, without losing the character of it's sound), and also look into taming your reverbs and delays if you have a lot of effects going on with each track (or buses/sends) that might cause build up in the low end over time.
>>
>>129321495
it’s the harmonics above the fundamental, your volume. and the volume/placement of everything else.
use low passed waves where there are some harmonics poking up between 80-2 or 300 hz for the simples sounds. alternatively: saturate sine.
that’s a simple sub but desu e same principles apply to every other type of bass
