Rooms to Nowhere edition
A thread for extreme, abrasive, progressive, or experimental rock-based music.
This means metal, hardcore, experimental rock, noise rock, and others.
Music that is mainstream, "alternative", novelty-driven, "proggy" but not progressive, or not primarily rock, is discouraged.
>Is [genre/band/album] fit for /xxr/?
If you have to ask, probably not.

Someone here got me into Axis Of Perdition and I've been going through their discog. Finally checking out their latest "offering".
This has a high rating on MA from one guy but it feels like a real let down compared to their earlier works. It's very polished and definitely solid, but it feels less eerie or chaotic than some of their other stuff. Still good, just disappointing for me compared toThe Red God or The Ichneumon Method

Either way he's long gone it seems.

>what bands inspired peste noire? or what's some bands with a similar sound?
I missed this at the time. I don't know what inspires PN but I've also struggled to find bands that sound similar.
Obviously the first thing to check are projects Famine's been involved in, but usually they're nowhere near as good as PN and Famine's contribution is the same riffstyle he usually uses. I love this riff but there's no denying it's just Famine on autopilot (and he's left the project now I think).
https://youtu.be/5_BmVKCIpjY?si=ASmPT-BZ-NQX1bww&t=252
The band I find that sounds kinda similar to PN riffwise the most is Ungfell, and they do dabble in folky elements but they rarely go into things like "accordion in the middle of a song". It's probably the closest I've personally heard to sounding a bit like PN metal-wise though.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ib-vbYXp00
Otherwise the only other rec I could have is to get more of those zany french sounds. PN when he busts out the accordion I'd consider "aggressively french" and Pensees Nocturne are probably the only band I've heard who are more aggressively french.
Absolutely nothing like KPN mind you, but they dabble in the same sort of sounds and experiment with accordions or organs etc.
It can come across very much as "circus metal" though, so I'd fully understand why someone wouldn't like it.

They're really not. They make it into US charts for rock/metal. CAFO blew up when it came out iirc.
>>Complex and unusual music
Complex sure, unusual I'm not sold. They do feel a lot like pretty typical prog metal with a touch of techwank thrown in on top.
For /mu/ standards they are very entry imo.

I don't know Full of Hell, but Kruelty have much more beatdown hardcore influence than 200SW did, though Untopia is a little more death metal than the first album. They're most often compared to Xibalba, Coffins, and Cianide. I'd say there's Bolt Thrower (War Master onward) in there too.

Depends on the game/album. I normally only listen to albums I'm familiar with or don't think I'm missing much. It also helps I mostly play autistic vidya which isn't demanding of attention or high pressure.
Sometimes I'll use it as a test though, where if the album grabs my attention to stop just being background listening then I know the album's doing something right.

Probably but I'm not that much of a fan of OSTs anyway. I try to leave it on for atmospheric shit like horror, but I really don't care about missing Dark Souls soundtracks after I'm fighting the boss for the 50th time. I'm probably just riddled with ADHD or something and need background listening at all times.

>>129274986
If it's much of the same then I don't blame you. I liked Madre Mia, but its dedication to chug is also a limitation. I know I'll get breakdown fatigue if I tear through the rest of the Xibalba discography now.
>>
>>129275002
>>129275054
From memory I do remember it chugging a bit, and I felt like the songwriting would regularly shoot itself in the foot just to be "heavy" for a moment.
I do need more listens of it though, but the meh first impression has left me sour on it. I don't mind some chugging but I do feel like it has to be done very well to engage me, like None So Vile knowing exactly when to do it.

That's one big pile of shit.
I was blasting the Paimon Gate discog today after not listening to it for a while, and I was surprised how last year's album is both more melodic and more extreme than the past demo and EP, which is a tough tightrope to walk. I had this acute realization during one of the songs of how unnatural this music is to listen to and enjoy, let alone create. Makes me wonder what the hell kind of music he was writing in Prosanctus Inferi.
I hope Jake can keep it up, but I'd also greatly respect if he ended the project here.

>>

I like it plenty, dunno why MA whines.
>>129306681
Don't really see that as DSBM over just plain ol' BM, but it has the I'm In A Coffin vocalist so it was always going to sound like it. Fella knows how to wail. Hopefully IAC actually makes some material soon.
>>
>>
>>
>>129310215
This isn't to say that subgenre DSBM should stop being what it has become, but there is potential in blending the two genres into something new: familiar to each, yet impossible within just one or the other. A cycling back to the ancestor without forgetting what has been learned, like black/death metal did when leaving heavy/thrash metal, and returning in the forms of meloblack and melodeath (before their reductions to borderline pop metal with harsh vocals).
>>
>>129310215
Well if you want DSBM that's at least not "one or two long atmospheric riffs for way too long early Hypothermia-style" then I do recommend his other project I'm In A Coffin. One Final Action in particular with the original mix, not the "One Last Final Action" remaster or whatever it's called, as it's basically DSBM driven primarily by bass guitar and vocals. The actual guitars take a backseat in the mix to let the bass drive the atmosphere.
Or as another punt, Advent Sorrow are really good for it, but sadly are a dead project due to the vocalist leaving or being kicked out based on whose story you take.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AX09PtR1-kE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgijKmkw-v8
Or with AS I've recently been enjoying this track a lot, as I never really dove into their first album much as it was too symphonic at times, but it has a couple of their best tracks on it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZFri_2gUJo
God the vocalist carries to the next level. Shame he doesn't do more shit even in his other projects nowadays.

It's base64-encoded text. I assumed you hadn't finished TA1 yet and didn't want to give away what happens. What I wrote was
>the metal is underwhelming. It plods along for a while and just fades out without a real climax or resolution, and it certainly doesn't have the energy of Hatred for Mankind. Not worth the wait.
>Yeah it's a shame they don't release more material more often as they really are the kings of what they do.
I'm glad they don't desu. I imagine this is music that takes time to make it vital, original, and aesthetically in-line with past releases.
>Only WidowMaker is kinda meh just because it meanders about a lot but I still like those bits to some extent.
TA2 feels like what I wanted out of Widowmaker when I last blasted it, and now makes me wonder if I'd like that album more now.

I'm weird about Morbid Angel. I like them, and I tend to love albums with Morbid Angel influence, yet I don't listen to MA much, especially not the Tucker albums, even though I have no issues with his vocals.

NTA but for a long while I always just saw them as "another DM band" or "yeah they were amazing for the time but now it's just standard DM". Eventually I relistened to them enough to still really enjoy them and Altars is one of my favourite albums despite their simplicty.
Gateways is good too, but I'm more of a Formulas man for that era of MA.

>>129331372
I like some noise rock (most of it is stuff that was posted here) , but what makes something mysterious guy hardcore?
>>
>>129331642
mgh is usually a little bit more 80s hardcore inspired but with lofi production if not similar to black metal. kind of a joke name because members of these bands will opt to have little information about themselves associated with the bands.
and hell yeah, anything in particular that stuck with you?
>>
>>
>>129331707
>anything in particular that stuck with you?
Noise rock, right? Killing Time, Strange Warmings of Laddio Bolocko, and I think Hypermagic Mountain was posted here too. I also like Helmet pre-Meantime, and Cold River Songs by Bodychoke.
>>
>>129331932
that bodychoke album is killer, i like all of their albums as well as their work as sutcliffe jugend. its too bad they are really the only band like that, even ramleh who is often brought up as a contemporary doesnt really get close
>>
>>129329224
When it comes to 90s DM, you can find a million other bands that sound like Cannibal Corpse, you can find thousands that sound like Death (minus Chuck's vocals) but Morbid Angel is truly unique in every aspect. The only band that's remotely close is Angelcorpse (only because of the solos really)
>>

They are insanely hard to replicate in whole. I think it comes down to their riffs and leads constantly being written or played in weird ways. Shit's both melodic and twisted, often lurching rhythmically or bending.
