Started bass at 15. I started playing clubs at 19 - CBGBs and L’Amour Rocks and other shit around the five boroughs.
The main issue is that you need to get in the early reps as soon as possible and hit successes until you hit the intermediate plateau. These reps are home practice, jamming with others, and stage time. Each of those has a difficulty level, stakes, and nuances. You can kiss all those home-perfected sweeped arps bye-bye when some asshole heckles you mid-set or your hand cramps from dehydration and your calluses start to bleed because they aren’t developed.
Essentially you need to double your rate of failure. Here’s an example: which part of your hand do you use for downward slides? Upward slides? Pick slides? Volume knob and pickup selection mid-phrase? Adjusting a flat string’s tuner? ALL OF THESE AND MORE will set you apart from novice to intermediate.

Stat with this, satan:
https://youtu.be/0BS9oBLrDw8
As soon as you can play that, you mastered your first cover. Small steps but I remember when I learned this (and could sing it), it unlocked a loot crate. Then it’s just a matter of learning little phrases that you’ll hear in songs. For example:
Gary Numan “Cars”
NKOTB “The Right Stuff”
Lipps Inc “Funky Town”
All of those feature the same Lydian-esque hook, so you now can start filling in your mental repertoire and cut down on the time it takes to get something performance-ready.

What guitar accessories should I ask for my birthday? Besides the obvious, id est: capo, guitar strap, tuner (I want to get an automatic tuner).
Gimmicky, or very useful accessories please :3

Oh yeah I think I settled on ebony, because I don’t know if I can trust fossil mammoth or walrus ivory to not be poached, plastic is gay and well actually maybe brass, because they have to cut down the ebony and that sucks…
Brass would look sexy I think.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>129305863
Get a brass slide (light as you can find)
All the other accessories are gay. A slide can give you the ability to play guitar in a way that is not achievable. Plus, it’s very easy to sound legit in open tunings - “Loser” by Beck is open D with slide. Avoid glass on acoustic because you’ll end up dropping it.

I’m sending her into Martin in a few months, to get work done on her, just a few things for now, I don’t want to pay for a neck reset or refret, too much money and she sounds great as is, I’ll wait a few more years. They’re going to fashion me a wooden pickguard and redo the headstock logo, and replace those pins of course, so I’ll ask them about ebony.
>>
>>
>>129305894
I’m sorry about that…
>>129305942
Will do! My clumsy ass would break a glass one, I suppose dropping a brass one wouldn’t be much better considering it’d dent.
>>
>>
>>
>>129305958
Or better yet an electric, I can finally buy one now since I got that amp. I’ve been looking at Gibson Firebirds today I love the sound and look of them, very sexy. I’ve also been interested in Stratocasters, Thinline Telecasters and several others that aren’t coming to me.
Maybe a Kramer, they look so cool.
>>
>>129305863
Fossilized Mammoth Ivory nut. I've got one on one of my guitars and I love that a piece of a an extinct animal that lived 200,000 years ago is living on through my guitar. The fact that it sounds great too is just a bonus.
>>
>>
>>129305991
I want to do it but the reason I’m hesitant is because there is a possibility it could be contributing to elephant poaching, I love the idea of using ivory from mammoths because it hurts nobody. I don’t think anyone is gonna bother microscoping the pieces I buy to determine if they’re modern or not.
But I would probably go all the way with it, nut, saddle and bridge pins. I actually think my current nut and saddle are elephant ivory…

I’m also trading this 12 string Höfner I bought later today, I’m going to try and get $300, I haven’t really been able to play with it because I never changed the strings or adjusted the action.
I wonder if I’ll regret letting it go, I’m doubling my money but I’m really only doing it out of necessity. And I haven’t used it in the 12 months plus that I’ve owned it so it’s probably for the best.

I mentioned yesterday that I started playing about a month ago, I got my friend to buy a guitar and we were gonna play together today. It was actually really fun. My first time playing with anyone else. We smoked joints and played for hours until like 1 in the morning. I taught him the minor pentatonic scale and how to play the riff from feel good. We were able to get synced up which was a very interesting feeling. Its crazy how you fan sync up rythym-wise. At a point, I couldnt really distinguish between the audio from either amp, especially playing with my eyes closed. Really fun and thanks to the guy who suggested hopping right into playing actual music together day one. Here's our guitars. I also bought an sf300 pedal which sounds really good.

Thank you, that ones mine, but he got his for like 500 bucks which is awesome. The star shape is actually really comfortable for classical sitting position. It was really interesting seeing how the different pickups made the guitars sound different when we swapped amps. Our guitars sound very different. So do our amps. He has an orange crush 35rt and I have a katana 100w with the sf300. The different length necks were interesting too.
>>129306339
It felt really good actually. We even swapped guitars at one point. Im gonna roll another joint and play more guitar since I dont have work until tomorrow.

Nah, brass is thick. Get a light one. Most people play it on the ring finger, but I’ve always used my pinky (easier to fret chords). Also, you SHOULD corrode it a bit with your sweat - it will grip better over time.
There’s lots of cool slide tricks and it opens up the range of the guitar to obscenely high pitches past the fretboard, or microtones to mimic carnatic music.
Best slide player I’ve ever heard is me, but besides me, Derek Trucks doing the wailing blues singer imitations is money. Kottke and Fahey are probably more your speed on acoustic (Vaseline Machine Gun). And you can also slide harmonics and sheeeit

no
there is no 'decent'
the worse technically you are, the better music you make
people get caught up in chasing technicality because its tangible but literally no one cares about how proficient a guitar player is, if anything, it makes them worse
even in music that supposedly demands high technical proficiency like metal, yea it's cool if you can shred like a motherfucker, but look at Kerry King, he literally fucking sucks beyond belief but sounds awesome

Recently got a decent beginner set up for recording guitar ideas into my DAW and I'm happy with using the drum VSTs to fill that spot, but I hate using bass VSTs, so figured buying a bass instead would be the best option. Was thinking of getting pic related (https://uk.fender.com/products/affinity-series-precision-bass-pj-1). I'm recording a variety of genres, but most fall into punk/pop-punk/alt/metal kind of areas. Is this a good first bass for a beginner, or are there better options?
TLDR; Thinking of getting pic related as my first bass guitar for recording my shitty ideas (mostly punk/pop-punk/metal) in my DAW, ye or nay?

What do you suggest specifically aside from playing tightly in time, no vibrato? For the last part specifically the other was just another solo take added in, didn't record it specifically to double track. Dunno the standard operating procedure for recording techniques in general, still a noob. Like the other one I know of is remove cut a lot of the bass frequencies.

When it comes to electric guitar gear don't even try plugging something into something it wasn't meant to be plugged into. You're going to destroy your gear or kill yourself like this. No, you can't plug your bass into your dinky guitar amp. No, you can't use an instrument cable to connect your amp to your cabinet. No, you can't use any old charger you have laying around to plug your pedals in. If you have to ask, the answer is no.

welcome to the limitations of 12-ET.
true intonation meme frets can fix this, but then you will sound funny playing with other people without them.
sweetened tunings exist, but they will make other chords sound worse at the cost of making some sound better.

excursion is how far a speaker moves and the excursion range is how far it is designed to move. lower frequencies require the speaker to move farther to achieve the same volume; bass cabinets have fully closed backs to help the speaker move air more easily to create those low frequencies. the closed back also helps protect the speaker from over excursion by providing air resistance to its movement. there are extraneous factors like low frequency filters built into combo amps and the way you can play the bass to generate more mids that can buy you an unquantifiable amount of time playing bass into a guitar amp, but either way you’re rolling the dice since guitar amp speakers are designed with low excursion ranges so they can focus more on the frequencies above the lower spectrum. it’s stupid to argue if it will or won’t happen but it’s undeniable that it can happen

This is one of the the best exercises I've seen. Been practicing it for a week or two and upped my note memory in the weak spots I had (D and G strings 6th fret and up)
https://youtu.be/bxMC6gz8P_4?t=731
tl;dw: play the circle of fifths through all 12 notes, play the note on all 6 strings. Start on 12th fret low E, then 7th on A, 2 on D, and so on then back down to A on the low E, so on. Eventually add a metronome and up the speed

i think because in general hobbies where you create have these high price point's now for their equipment. after getting the starter gear and getting things going that's pretty much when your hobby may or may not take your extra money. if someone wants to make something high quality they will most likely try and invest in good gear. i think the accumulation of shit without getting anything financially back is what drives people away from creating, when the fun of making something is learning and getting better at it

HOAs are just as bad. I lost $15k selling my last house because their legal defense is not keeping any records. Fuck living in the city, that shit is gay.

I have hope. I helped this dude perform his first song of Nothing Else Matters by giving him the Spotify lyrics on my phone. First time performing annd he sang that shit anll the way through.

Another one had her child raped by her biological father, but she gives me jelly beans because I listen to and recognize her deep hillbilly pain.
I do my part and I think there’s an unofficial minority being spiritual anchors in rough waters. Music is spell casting and being able to soothe people by playing the theme to Pirates of the Caribbean or Johnny Cash. This one beautiful girl was oogling me so I think women are an early indicator of what society needs.

Fellas, I need advice.
I don't know the first thing about guitars, but I've always wanted to learn. Finally got some free time and hobby money.
Thus, I have these questions to ask:
Would a Yamaha Pacifica 120H be a fitting guitar for a complete beginner? I only really chose it for the looks, was initially looking at a 112V but settled for this one as it's supposedly a little better.
Could I play acoustic music with it? As in, somehow make it sound similar to an acoustic guitar and play me some Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, Zach Bryan, that sort of music?
What kind of amp am I realistically looking at for such purposes?
Would playing Rocksmith with it be beneficial in any way? Like, could I actually learn anything with that game/app?

There’s only one song you need to listen when high:

>Pacifica
That's a top tier choice for a first guitar. Yes you can play "acoustic" on it by means of using a clean channel. Most amps have a setting for this. Turn the switch to bridge pickup mode, watch some Justin Guitar videos and just play along to those country songs once you get the hang of it.
You should be getting some kind of satisfaction every time you pick it up to play. Don't take it apart / mod it for more hours than you play. And, stay off /gg/ while you're learning for a few days. Good luck.

Pacifica is fine but research the other models before committing to 120H. You could always get an acoustic sim for it.

It's not bad but there are better ways to learn songs. Always learn songs.

Thanks, guys. What kind of amp would be fitting for me? Would a Fender Frontman 20G / Fender Mustang LT25 do?
>>129314523
I understand it's more of a "Guitar Hero but with a real guitar" sort of thing, but it would at least help with finger dexterity, right?

Learning music is just like learning language.
1. Babble, just play notes so your brain can hear them, then start playing groups of notes etc, this lets your brain figure out how to make each sound.
2. Simple structured sounds, pentatonic, simple 3-5 note riffs, simple chords
3. More structure, major scales minor scales, riffs that play into each other, triads
4.Start expressing now, say things with your guitars limited vocabulary, you've got all the tools now to learn any advanced technique.

Mustang, valvetronix, katana all good starting amps because they have lots of built in effects for you to play with. None of them sound the best but they sound good enough and can steer you in the direction you want to take your sound.

I took shrooms in a Tesco and the music was like darting goldfish. I could manipulate it in real-time and it echoed off the cans of ‘Ol Speckled Hen. I always got the French beers because its hard not to insult the English.
I did shrooms on a gig in Dayton and could feel the audience form and egregore in the form of discharged pheromones.

This. I did amanita muscaria twice and got a birthing experience in a loop. Not good for music making and I had to listen to Joni Mitchell and Harry Nilsson to bring myself back into a better state.

Honestly, I found the katana presets to just sound like ass. I bought an sf300 and it was better than anything I could find on boss tone studio. My friends orange crush sounded better than any preset I could find, but ironically the katana seems to take pedals better.

I used them to get over my trauma (molestation, abandonment). It helps to have a girl who can suck your dick to bring you back from the Akashic records of THE BIG BAD THING, but I felt overwhelming empathy and realized that looking forward was the only way to survive fight-freeze-flight. Alone, I combined this with The Gateway Tapes, a Gurdjieff group, an 10-day Vipassana silent meditation. All this freed me from my past behavior loops, and I could live life without a cavalcade of bad shit running through my head.
I found pic rel shortly thereafter, and the four-phase cycle seems to be the rhythm of our lives. I may have to contend with landlord shit, but I did a bunch of musical accomplishments - many of which bore fruit under heavy edible and psychedelic usage in controlled circumstances.
The kingdom of heaven is within.
I listen to this tune to reorient myself:

I’m just saying that not every drug is conducive to creativity. However, the first joint I smoked made sense of reggae for me. And I listened to Death Grips in speed and I could understand their songwriting process.

you will regret getting a pacifica
the frets will be fucked, the wiring is cheap, the pots are cheap, etc. the setup will be horrible, we're talking 2.65 mm at 12th fret etc. intonation will be fucked too.
i bought one of these as a beginner, and it almost made me quit the learning.
it has been my biggest mistake.
i am not joking when i say a fender squier, even the 200 dollar options are better.
