Just watched Horner video with his son. He never done an interval session in his life. And people still surprised and outraged that random pro jobbers are faster than the top cyclists from the past. Lance and Johan and have spoken about this before how their training was amateur compared to today. And everyone else was amateur compared to them at the time.
Now if someone comes along and makes Pogacar look amateur then I'll start squeaking.
>>
>>153246214
>random pro jobber
the problem with cycling is that it's harder to tell who is doping based off of looks. At least in the gym it's pretty obvious who is roiding.
If you believe that people who spend well in excess of 25-50K on their "hobby" aren't on hormone replacement therapy and a bunch of other crap, you're literally retarded. Especially people who brag about their FTP are usually not natty. These wiggers literally take out loans to be faster on a bike. Their entire identity and raison d'être depends on their performance and bragging rights. Why do you think there's so many heart related issues in cycling?

Look at all the conti jobbers that get caught doping every year. They are still a million miles off the top level. Doping is not so powerful.
Doped up Volta donkeys get dabbed on by the likes of Stussi and Munton.
>>
>>
>>153247500
In terms of muscle size and blood values yes it's possible. But put that person from the couch behind a barbell or on a bike and they'll get humiliated by a natty that has been training properly. There is a lot more to performance than muscle size and blood values. And you can't train your body to actually move that blood in you or your nervous system to contract your muscles from the couch.
>>
>>
>>153247613
>on a bike and they'll get humiliated by a natty that has been training properly
that was kinda the point I'm supporting. That there is nothing unbelievable about the top natty riders now being better than doped Lance et. al. back then with their retarded training.

>there is nothing unbelievable about the top natty riders now being better than doped Lance et. al. back then with their retarded training.
1. training for a bike race is not rocket science. You literally do as much endurance based training you can recover from and a little bit of high intensity, not too much because recovery takes longer and gains are more limited
2. there are no natty riders today; they're all being "medically treated". It's done professionally and somewhat within official legal limits though. Technically you're not cheating if you don't get caught.
3. training today isn't any better than it was in the past. Training literally consists of: do as much volume as you can recover from. Today's riders also get recovery drugs, which increases their weekly volume.
The same is true with guys in the gym. Everything is about VOLUME. But a natty human being can only recover from a certain amount of stimulus. Enhanced individuals' recovery is significantly better. Try to ride as much as pogacar does. Try to do it for a few months. Even if you prepare years to get up to that level you won't be able to get there without drugs.
>>
>>
>>153253527
I'd argue even without recovery drugs the 'data' part of it has made knowing how much people can recover from and how long it takes a lot easier. So even if the actual activity done in training hasn't changed much, planning the exercise has. So totally natural riders now (combined with computers, autism, and aero knowledge) would probably be loads better than totally natty riders from the past. And quite possibly better than midtable doped ones from the past. Personally I would probably beat LeMond 99/100 times just because I drink cherry juice every now and then.
>>
>>153253620
>the 'data' part of it has made knowing how much people can recover from and how long it takes a lot easier
hard disagree.
The absolute gold standard to determine what you can recover from is to pay attention to how you feel. Power numbers do not take unpredictable variables into account. Recovery isn't simply about training stimulus; it's also about other sources of stress in your life (financial, relationships, traumatic world events, the news on tv lmao, ...)
You don't need a power meter to tell you that you feel subpar on the bike. When you're fully recovered, you feel powerful, nimble, sharp and fast and riding the bike is fun. When you're not recovered and are over-training you hate riding the bike and you hate your life.
>cherry juice makes me faster than LeMond

Both UCI and PCS treat winning some Monument, to the same as winning any other. Yet this runner's top palmares, which include winning four different Monuments, do not list the four Monuments consecutively, but randomly interrupt them with three Tour stage wins.
PCS values a Monument win at 275 points, and a Tour stage win at 100 points. I just don't see how 3 Tour stage wins could belong in between two Monument wins, in terms of points.
>>
>>153253657
Much earlier. Our ancestors were arguably stronger and more resilient because their entire lives were manual labor. Today, we struggle with declining testosterone levels and sedentary lifestyles and believe a $15K bike + cherry juice will make us faster.
The de facto growth stimulus has always been volume. You get better at something the more you do it, period. The limiting factor isn't a lack of "advanced" training schedules; it's the physical threshold of the human body. Most people fail because they're either lazy or push beyond their recovery limits, not because they lack a power meter.
Wind tunnel studies are frequently hyped to justify massive corporate investments. If a piece of gear doesn't make a noticeable difference in how you feel and move on the bike, it’s usually marketing fluff. This is the marketing of marginal gains. Bike brands need to keep selling bikes. If they don't succeed in making you believe that you need the newest gear to be faster, they literally go bankrupt.
If a piece of gear doesn't make you consistently faster on your training lap, it's bullshit.
The gap between past and present top riders isn't due to better training or gear. The only logical explanation is better medical management. To reach the absolute pinnacle of this sport, you eventually hit a wall that training alone cannot overcome. Beyond that level, you are either genetically gifted beyond rational belief or you are professionally medicated (a transhumanist). Pro teams/riders have to dope because otherwise they cannot compete in the big leagues. It's that simple.
>>
>>153253740
>Pro teams/riders have to dope because otherwise they cannot compete in the big leagues. It's that simple.
and I'm not saying that to detract from their performances and I don't even consider it cheating because they're all doing this. The teams with the most money have access to the best riders and the best medicine. This is what sports is: a business. Sure the rivalry is fun to watch, but if you buy into leasing a 15 000 dollar carbon race bike because of it, I think you're absolutely retarded goy cattle. Buy a high quality steel frame once (or better yet; have it custom built by a real human being specifically for your body type) and ride it for the rest of your life. Sure the newest tyre and tube compounds do make a difference, and even deep section, wider rims also make you faster. But please don't be the retard that buys an SL8 because hype.

You're mixing up a lot of things my dear schizo but let me remind you that Gilbert was doing fasted 5h rides 10 years ago. If you think you get the same adaptation as a properly fuelled one because "only volume matters" then I don't know what to tell you
>>
>>153253870
>fasted 5h rides
no one does that. The most the avg. human worker or athlete would go without food is half a work day but usually you have a small meal between breakfast and lunch and between lunch and dinner. So it's safe to say a normal human re-fuels every 2 hours. Unless you're a lazy bastard or something. So Gilbert's training is unorthodox. He was literally training himself for going on hunger strike. Maybe he felt like his team didn't pay him enough. Good for him.
In any case, when I say "volume is all that matters", it means 1. qualitative, effective volume + recover-ability and 2. proper fueling.
I thought this went without saying but I suppose frogs are a little slower than most.

>>153253892
If you want to say that endurance training has always been about train a lot, eat well and sleep well, then yes. To pretend that the meaning of all those things hasn't changed in the last 50 years is ridiculous
>>
>>153253903
>To pretend that the meaning of all those things hasn't changed in the last 50 years is ridiculous
it has not. Food is still food, the human body is still the human body and sleep is still sleep.

It's time to read the training bible again
>During this season I ate a lot, probably around 7000 kcal per day. I gained about five kilograms during summer to stay on the safe side when it came to preventing injury. I tried to eat a lot of fats so that my energy flow during the day would be more even. As my ability to use fat as an energy source would increase, my lows during the long rides wouldn’t be as low.
>Downing 7000 kcal per day is a challenge. My dental health was shit during this period from all the eating and I wish I would’ve addressed that issue earlier on in my career. Brushing my teeth three times a day was the way to go, but realized this way too late. However, to down all the calories I was drinking whip cream during sessions, another recurring routine was to eat potato chips after dinner until I went to bed. Aerobic season is food season and I tried to enjoy that, but usually I was experiencing a food coma and hunger at the same time. It’s quite a weird feeling.

>There are a thousand different ways you can get to 20 hours per week on the bike. Of course it matters how you structure those 20 hours. Results will vary wildly.
the vast majority is zone 2 tho
only a small amount of time is allocated to higher intensity because it's a lot more taxing on the body
Training (hard) when you're already not fully recovered is counterproductive because the training dose is lower quality. You're essentially wasting time and resources.

And the further you go back in time, the more bizarre shit turns up. Hell, there was once a guy who won the marathon at the Olymics on a diet of brandy, raw eggs and strychnine.

Wonder how many lazy riders did well. Like how some top footballers were known to barely train and still perform really well. Carlos Betencaur I guess, but he literally got fat and got fired so he doesn't count. It's very doable on domestic scale but I wonder if anyone had the talent to do it at the WT. I remember Jack Bobridge would take drugs, drink all night and smoke cigarettes, I guess that counts.
>>
>>
>>153255489
Maybe, but that is irrelevant in a sport that's very technical and skill based. Eden Hazard supposedly frequently skipped training. Yet you watch his matches and he was exceptional, possibly the best in the premier league at one point. But he'd get injured frequently because he didn't do much conditioning in a league where you've got 6'4 working class brits from stoke trying to snap your shins every week. I think I recall reading Frank Vandenbrouke was choppy with training too but I imagine it was relatively common in the 90's and 00's.

So basically these guys were in ketosis half of the time. Not that much of a problem since your body can burn fat just as efficiently after a while.
At least if you actually got fat to burn. Froome did not so he had to dope, wiggo did (and still doped)
>>
>>
>>
>>153256179
>basically these guys were in ketosis half of the time
from someone who has done intermittent fasting for a long time, I can tell you that yes, you get "used" to it, you can do LISS but you cannot do HIT. If you do that latter while fasted, you literally start shaking and feel like fainting.
Ketosis is your body's survival mode. I've fasted for 3 days before and it's grueling. You literally have to keep yourself still because the slightest bit of effort will make you feel horrible lol.
>>
>>153256346
Fasting is not the same. You can go into ketosis but it takes a while for your body to start burning fat efficiently. People on a keto-diet are not shaking, they simply function like anyone else because the body optimized
