>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.
>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.
>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Goblin King Games, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

Does terrain plays an important role in your games or you use whatever table and makeshift available to build it?

Mostly true, but also if you built a nice set of "European Countryside in Summer" terrain it works with 90% of games you will ever play, and then you can custom make a few specialty pieces for individual games

I think terrain is extremely important but don't have the time or patiences right now to make full fledge battlefields with unique terrain for scenarios and all that. But terrain and painted miniatures (even poorly painted) make the game 100% more enjoyable.

What the hell happened to this? I thought it was supposed to come out last year, then it was delayed till this year but there's no date in sight
Also for some reason they are already selling minis, but not the full range, in combination to the Gundam card game?? What is going on

Yes, it's an important part for immersion and for influencing actual gameplay.
I've mostly built it myself. I'd like to make a few more pieces, especially watery pieces like creeks, ponds or bogs. Any tips on making those?
>>
>>97387843
it was always gonna be 2026
they wanted to have their cake and eat it by selling deluxe starter decks with figures but not competing with themselves by dropping a gundam tcg and miniature game at the same time
its getting demos at events mid February

Water is tricky because every single person does it differently.
I've tried lots of methods but the easiest and best looking is to paint the water on and then use glossy modpodge painted on top of the water to give it a wet shimmery look. Don't bother messing around with two part epoxy resins, it's very expensive and hard to do well.

How's the new edition of Conquest First Blood looking? I've always liked the aesthetic and sculpts for Conquest but I hate the idea of rank and flank on 38mm scale with about ten different models, it's just a little silly. Seems like First Blood fixes that problem for me.

They'll be showing off the new rules in February. But historically, First Blood has always lagged significantly behind Last Argument in terms of resources and attention from both the company and the community. While I'm hopeful the new version is decent and turns things around for First Blood, I'm not holding my breath until I see the actual rules.

Best budget rivers ive seen is taking a bit of blue fabric
>add layer of PVA
>add layer of plastic sheet (like plastic bags)
>add layer of PVA
>add layer of plastic
>etc
You can slightly twist and pinch the plastic for ripples and flow effects.
Pic slightly related but you can do a single sheet with fabric banks and then put coloured fabric underneath to change the water as needed.

Does anyone know of some archer miniatures that would go along with these Nasier models? Planning to use them in Kings of War but the original model range never included any archers.
>>
>>97394438
That's the problem with /awg/ companies, they are always trying to be GW or tap into the GW fan base, and that is why historical companies always reign supreme, have more SOVL, and for many they make more money. Look at Perry Miniatures, their skirmish in a box has way more miniatures than the StarCraft one, and the box is £30.

The new rules with the Confrontation esque dice system look cool from what little they've shown of it. Warzone Resurrection is dead, what product exists is all that exists. Some can still be found on Ebay, but pickings are slim.
Mutant Chronicles Warzone (first and second edition) can still be purchased through Prince August, but they don't have the full range, but they've got more than enough to play.
Warzone Eternal is the newest iteration of the game and can be purchased via Trenchworx, but you'll be buying a Snaptray. A Snaptray is a 3d print that hasn't been removed from its supports.
Personally, I believe that first edition is the best edition, I play it all the time. You can find rules etc here https://www.mutantpedia.com/eng/Warzone.html

Can someone with a facebook grab the rules from the Dimensional Warfare: Tactics/Skirmish rules from the facebook group of the same name?

>>97398137
SnapTray is actually a really simple but smart idea. Overcome the problem of shipping fragile models by spending a penny in print material to create a frame to hold everything in place and supports to keep from being crushed. The one I ordered from them was smartly designed.

You shouldn't get arthritis in your 30s unless you get a serious injury. In fact you shouldn't get arthritis anywhere until your late 70s if you take care of your health and body. You see a lot of fat slobs getting arthritis in their 30s and 40s because they have kept their bodies in a permanent state of inflammation their entire adult lives due to inactivity and stuffing themselves with industrial goyslop.

Many such cases. It really is a shame that when people try to leave the 40k plantation they always fall into the most 40k adjacent game they can find. It's like an addiction, they don't really want to quit or get help

Yeah. I looked into it and managed to build these guys into a Chivalrous Kingdoms list with the web army builder, but it really is just too close to Warhammer for what I want.
Anyway, what should I paint today? The rest of the footmen, or start on the light horsemen? I'm leaving the mammoth for last.
>>
>>97402432
It's AA. That is a massive boon from 40ks igougo (an archaic holdover from whfb, where igougo is sctually fun) and a key departure go say its not the most 40k adjacent.
I'm not shitting on igougo over all, but it's ONLY fun in rank and flank

Yeah, the grey, wash, drybrush, grime will work fine on those. I recommend enamel spray primer since it gets better coverage on absorbent materials like mdf in less coats. You can also sponge/smack a brush onto walls for some quick color and leave the trim grey. Spraying another color at a slight downward angle onto the grey (top two thirdsish) can give it some nice color prretty quick.

I'm trying to make a wargame to play with my son, he's only 4 so not really old enough to play HeroQuest and stuff yet.
What do you think are some of the absolute simplest mechanics for a wargame? I'm thinking it should be played on hexes because counting hexing for morement is easier to understand than measuring. For combat I'm thinking both playera roll one single dice each, the higher score wins. Different strength models will use different dice to swing the roll in their favor, ie. a goblin rolls a d4, a hero rolls a d10, etc.
That's basically the entire game, simple movement, simple combat resolution. Thoughts?
>>
>>97400913
I can't feel my hands (numbness, loss of fine motor control, intermittent tremors) but you learn to deal with it. A mini painting handle/grip so I don't drop the mini, an airbrush for as much as I can and dry brushing+edge highlighting are pretty forgiving. Ultra fine details like eyes can be a pain but if I brace against something it's manageable. Despite being pretty debilitating I hide it well enough, people just think I'm clumsy sometimes or an idiot because I can't tie my shoes or buckle my seat belt without looking at it and laser focus
Your body will break down and you can still do the things you enjoy
>>
>>97402902
When I was that age, my brother and I had some army men and grabbed my mom's sewing mat (with a 1" square grid) and constructed rules about how they could move. Combat was resolved with shooting rubber bands from above the models. Could be your best bet.

A combat patrol is around 500 points of units but if you max it out with addons you can get it up to 800 or 900. They're usually seen as a starter pack and the name of the game mode for 500 point armies is Combat Patrol. The most popular game size and what's used for competitive play is 2000 points. In models alone you can expect to pay 1k USD for a 2000 point army. Not including paint, primer, brushes, glue, etc

Making a team for 5LftB with the models and stls I own/have painted
Heres what I got so far. Since the cat and rabbit models are already painted I figure it will be a beastfolk party. "The Animal Crackers"
this will be there theme song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAmMeAO7Dko
The team:
>Sir Jack Droppole, a catfolk knight who left his order because it was starting to get a bit gnostic-y and that never ends well. He just turned 3 years old and figured hes not getting and younger so he went questing in the east marches looking for loot and food. He tests if he really has 7 lives or not
>Oswald Van Radjish, the brain of the party. A rabbit cleric of great intellect out to stop the brooding madness in the east and find the secrets of the lost Metropol. He gives good counsel that Jack ignores because he doesnt respect the Dutch, and Scroop seldom understands his accent
>Scroop Masher, Frog scout. A skilled hunter and spy. He was evicted from his home from the east swamps and is out to reclaim it with these mammals. Fish out of water type, rather dumb but happy to go with the flow.
>Bertha Ironvulva, the token female(? no one wants to check) gnoll of the party. Just sorta came out of nowhere and started killing stuff for them. Scares the daylights out of Oswald, Sir Jack figures as long she is killing for them its better then being on the otherside of the axe. "Sometimes ignoring the problem is the best way of dealing with it Ossy"
Followers not shown:
Jane and Dick: 2 orphans who Scroop "hired" (kidnapped) after Jack said they should get humans for better ratings. Scroop did not understand humans dont mature until their late teens and figured the were older than most of the party. Jane (14) and her brother Dick (10) think they are the main characters. They will either become heroes or learn the hard way

Playtest game #4! Vermin Gangs vs Avid Theocracy.
>Avids started strong knocking out a threatening Grizzlies charge turn 1, but the Vermin sniper squad cracked off the Avid commander once they were free from combat, scoring commander kill points to bring the score ahead.
>Turn 2 Pinion Guard removed some backline Slumrunners while the Vermin bikes took control of the center of the board. Shots were traded but not much died.
>Turn 3 activation count of the Vermin dropped heavily, the Avids removed the sniper commander and traded home points with the Vermin.
>Turn 4 scores move back towards even but the last Grizzlies pack catches up to and removes the Avid's heavy mechsuits.
>Turn 5 the only way for Avids to win is to remove the bikes from the center, but without a good melee threat, they have to rely on shots from the battlepriests to force a Panicked check, which the bikes passed thanks to their Leader.
>End score 34-36 Vermin Gangs.
Playtesting is coming along smoothly, still making lots of tweaks to factions mid-game. Next step is to finalize terrain so I dont have to keep using 40k-style L ruins. Haven't come into any game-ending issues yet, which is good. 3'x3' play area for "half-sized" games has been working well, I just got another set of "minis" to test out a full game, gonna try 6x3.

By 2030, once WoW is dead, Archon will start a Warcraft Miniatures game.
And their successful partnership with Blizzard means they'll also have an Overwatch hero skirmish game in the vein of Marvel Crisis Protocol.
And in that time Diablo minis will have been released for a grim and dark RPG.
The Overwatch skirmish game will prove to be popular enough that it will have promotions to let you use your Diablo minis or Starcraft minis or Warcraft hero minis and then it will just be tabletop Heroes of the Storm (RIP)

I don't know what an avid theocracy's minis would look like or how gross you imagine your vermin but one page rules has free paper minis and terrain if you want to add some flair to your game
each faction gets150 pdf pages of paper minis and 23 pages of themed papercraft terrain

They were called miniaturemen and they sold their own resin Orc Cowboys, but also all sorts of random miniatures second hand for a couple of quid each. I'm actually quite gutted.

no but now I need to go find some bows and bash them onto the pelgarth's.
WOK was such a weird game. I really liked it though. ton of unusual mechanics and really willing to throw out all the assumptions and rework skirmish from the ground up.
>>
>>97394831
yeah, it's been done with a lot of game models. they do usually need a small amount of work because vidya models are often not closed solids. but there's tools for that and it's really not that complicated. same level of difficulty as learning to add supports in your slicer; any anon with a working brain could sit down with a tutorial and blender and master it in an hour or two.
>>97394853
a lot of them would work fine. WCs Big Shoulders Big Hands look is driven by the same goal as GWs version: making models easy to identify when viewed from above. that'd translate to tabletop fine.
WC3 models probably wouldn't work even at 15mm though. that was still an era when most of the visual detail was in the textures (they're VERY low poly). you'd have to use WoW stuff. that said once you have the models you can obviously combine and rescale them to your heart's content.

>you'd have to use WoW stuff
yeah but as I said, WoW stuff doesn't look good, most character models are bad, creatures are usually ok or even good
also WoW has a lot of stuff that's just simple flat plane shapes with textures on like WC3. or it used to, I stopped around WotLK, but I'm sure player character models were or are mostly just fancy helmet/shoulder + texture armor
I think something like pick rel could pass in smaller than 15mm scale. Or just with a little extra detailing work on it then

Trying to remember a game's name. Fairly recent one, I think it started publishing last year? 3D print models only, no physical available, sci-fi setting, hex bases. I think it was some company that had been doing 3d printing models for a while and they had put out rules and lore for their setting. Larger army sizes?

Sure, but don't forget there's a Amateur Game Design and Homebrew Thread >>97283892, you might get more hits there.

I've formatted the documented so that the rules are presented with bullet points instead of traditional paragraphs. I think its a bit more readable and easier to skim for specific rulings, but it also takes up a lot of space, so the rules are probably even shorter than 30 pages. the document is 50ish pages total but a lot of that is weapons, zombie types, etc.
Anyways I'll do a bit more editing and formatting and just throw it out here at some point.

As a Heroscape player, not only does the terrain matter, I have to build it every match. This however, isn't a problem, because a good Heroscape player knows that map building is part of the game and should enjoy it as much as the rest!
Also, question for anons in thread. Do anyone have help me find some minis? You guys post cool ones all the time so I'm hoping you could all source me some cool ones. In particular, I'm looking for floating Swords, Guns, Shields, and Chains, if they're all one style, even better.

Eh they're £10 for 5, and his single sculpts are like £2.50-4 for man-sized and slightly larger stuff. He's literally just one guy (who used to post on /tg/) making his own stuff in his own style.
Even Forlorn Hope and em4 are charging £3 per old Grenadier metal these days.
Never mind Ramshackle Games. Curtis bizarrely has single resin miniatures up at like £6 each but you can bundle ten for £45 which is still bloody expensive imho

NTA but can confirm this story. I had to post on the facebook group he runs to get my order shipped. Once he said he shipped it, it turned up on time and I'm very happy with Planet 28 as a rulebook, I'm even going to support the upcoming softback that will have the expansion content rolled into it, but I shouldn't have had to publicly shame him to get my order.
>>
>>

Yeah tbqh I've placed three orders over the years, and the two with miniatures took quite a while. I did see on his Instagram he posted his casting list for the day and he was casting stuff ordered like three weeks prior.
My Planet 28 book came rapid though. And now it's OOP
>>
>>97417556
Aye this is true lad. I'm a real stickler for a bargain myself. I actually placed an order with a small UK company who had sci-fi and fantasy metals for £1.20 each last year, and after my order he put his prices up lel

Sounds like he's going to be like his Heroes of the Storm version. Which feels appropriate. Buff others while providing decent ranged support.
Following that though, Kerrigan will probably be able to dive into the enemy and deal massive damage, but is squishy and will need to be supported or she'll die quickly.
Leaving Artanis to be the tankiest of the bunch able to hold down a front line. Would be great if the could work in his little swap-places ability.

I've tried the grim dark firefight (mechanically the same thing at least a couple of years ago). Fun enough to have a couple of games during a Barbecue but not deep enough to make it my main game.
Just having 2 stats well (4 movement and wounds but hidden under universal special rules) makes you wish the game was a little bit more complex since you are dealing with characters and not entire units like in the other OPR games.
>>
>>
>>97421382
At least when I played it we went for 400. It recommend 300. (No idea how much is recommended now) We did that because otherwise the teams had super boring compositions.
For example a leader unit could buy some skill and a weapon, but that ended costing like almost 100 points so everything else end being super cheap or basic or if you avoid the special rule the teams end being super similar. With the game only having 2 stats even less difference between teams does not help.
In the bigger games is not a big issue since you have enough units to see some difference, but here usually you only see 10 models between the two players in theory the max is 20, but that would required both players going for the cheapest thing possible
Also bring different list, games tend to be super short and fast.
If you can print the stat cards even better they usually fit in a single page.
Side note all OPR games are almost the same, the quest, warmaster and space ship games are the actually different ones. You can play with fantasy or sci fi version against each other with no real issues.

Platoon and company scale Cold War warfare in a low-magic fantasy setting, with alternating unit activations, and a focus on sight and spotting mechanics. This video is a pretty good overview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aY0O2rdkx4
Everything is free on their itch.io page https://drekfortmdc.itch.io/firelock-198x-09-public . There's an official TTS module, and the game is designed to be playable with printed standees and construction paper terrain.

They made an 'animal bits' one, which is a bunch of bones and antlers and such. They're all pretty large (definitely AT LEAST 32mm, and then most of the animals were probably super duper dire versions of the real thing).

Rules aren't that hard at all. The biggest thing is that the phases are ordered so that shooting happens before movement and there's a few token systems to manage like Command Points and Pin/Ammo but overall you have maybe a couple dozen units max to manage if you're going with cheap stuff so its not hard to keep track of. I have a friend who likes OPR because its simple and he likes Firelock.
