So, as far as I understand, old artwork for games was moar "soulful". And there were more tits and ass to pander to the male gaze.
So, in fact, "soul" = "pervy"?

> INB4 Traditional games?
The artwork of games is very much related to the games themselves, yes, good for noticing that.

Bi male or bi female?
'Sexualized men' tend to look very different depending on the sex they are appealing to, just like sexualized women.
A wonderful example of this irl is the push to stardom that the actress Zendaya has, because she is very attractive to women and gay men, not so much to straight men.
>>
>>97464092
Zendaya's not attractive to anyone, women say she's attractive BECAUSE she's homely enough to not feel threatened by

I don't think it's specifically that it's pervy, it's that it isn't as restrained.
There's less of a divide between the image in the head and the image on the paper, and sometimes that means you'll have artists pull back so they don't come across as pervy.

Thing about art is, what you the observer see in it, also tells a lot about you.
If you see a naked woman do you think of Perversion?
Proticism?
Subjugation to a "Male Gaze"?
The enrapturing power of feminine beauty?
Pornography?
Classical sculpture?

What you see, tells me as much about you, as it does the thing you are looking at.

I mean, there's also other question; is eroticism always "perverse"?
Only perhaps in the minds of those who are best gelded with a knife.

I wouldn't say so much that 'sovl' is just cheesecake, but I'm going to hijack >>97463722 to help with my point.
Pretty good dinosaur, right? Looks authentic, pretty real, life-like pose? Well, that's the standard now (even if it's usually much cheaper-looking CGI) but the dino books when I was little were, well, let's say fonder of more primitive depictions. Maybe not as obviously cartoony as Fantasia, but they were similarly fond of poses and scenes that almost told their own story, rather than a shot from a nature film. And often in the most glorious watercolour or engraved styles, setting distinct moods; lush jungle, or harsh 'red in tooth and claw' kills.
Accurate? No, especially not now and arguably outdated even then.
But did they catch my imagination? Oh yes. There was something there that BREATHED - I remember an allosaurus at a kill, I think it was, and mini-me refused to touch that part of the page because I thought it could bite me. And THAT is 'sovl'.

This is the largest issue that I think people don't realize yet.
It isn't that "they don't make x like they used to" it's that they can't. They can't make good movies, television or games anymore, let alone bridges or airplanes or anything else that requires engineering. I sometimes feel like I'm watching romans wander around asking "why don't they repair the aqueducts?"
>>
>>97467230
We are definitely in the decedent and cultural decline period of civilization, and unless people realize that and drop all the subversive shit and pursuits of hedonism (including indulging in moral hedonism for minorities/dregs on civilization), we are going to fall victim to it.
Being better than others or "the fittest" who can do something well and decisively (like draw, govern, etc) is practically treated as a sin now.

>>97467290
Don't really care how up my own ass this sounds, but preserving knowledge and ability should probably be something we set up orders to preserve, like monks used to do.

Based. Keep fighting the good fight brother, we'll each do what we can.
>>
>>97467290
Not spending 15 hours+ drawing more niche, culturally lowbrow, titty and ass pictures is definitely a descent into hedonism and a sign of the collapse of civilisation.

Do you people even hear the nonsense you spout? Just because there isn't as much of the stuff you liked when you were 12 and didn't have access to porn doesn't mean that things are worse now or that we are somehow retrogressing as a species. Just admit you liked the lowbrow stuff and wish there were more people engaging with that small time period of culture when this was how traditionally trained artists could make money. Now they make furry porn. If people would pay for this artwork it would come back in an instant but I can guarantee that noone whining in this thread has ever commissioned artwork like this.

You're an idiot, but I accept that you are probably well intentioned.
I don't think you understood my post at all.

If a person sees a beautiful woman with cracking tits, and concludes that this is a function of the "Male Gaze" that tells me that they are a joyless despiser of beauty, and probably feel ugly themselves.

Conversely, if a person sees a post indicating that what people see in something tells you about themselves as much as the subject, then that tells me that they are simply looking for something to argue about.

I don't ERP, because jerking off is not a communal activity.

If the presence of a beautiful scantily clad woman indicates to you that now is time to unzip your trousers and start beating it under the table, then you are the problem.

The people who should be gelded with knives are the ones who see wholesome heterosexual eroticism, which is NOT the same as pornography, and read it as "Perversion" or carte blanche to start masturbating during a communal activity.

I found it embarrassing and awkward when at my first game in college, the DM brought out a huge binder with a cover picture of a fantasy artwork of a woman with bare breasts. If we'd had such things as X cards, I would have used one then.
With no other option for playing though, I had to suffer through it for years, which made the game less fun, which made me resolve to play mostly online.
>>
>>97468844
What's wrong with bare breasts? And what makes the breasts of women so much worse than the breasts of men?
>>
>>97468844

>>
>>97468919
It's more about the idea that it's ok to voice your discomfort and it'll be accepted, you won't be humiliated for doing so. Not so much about the card itself.
But by all means continue to pretend to misunderstand what I said, making discourse impossible.

>>97468871
They make me feel uncomfortable when they're just displayed. I don't have to explain more.
>And what makes the breasts of women so much worse than the breasts of men?
An entire wealth of cultural and historical reasons, that were commonly understood throughout the West as little as 30 years ago.
>>
>>97469371
I will humiliate anyone using an X card, even for a reason I'd find otherwise valid if they spoke to me like a human being. If you can't respect my intelligence enough to talk to me, you deserve scorn and exile from my table.

Anyone who uses these words has no argument, and can be safely ignored.

>>
>>97463283
It took me about 1000 times of seeing this picture until I realized that the woman is gigantic and far away instead of normal sized and close.

Also: "soul" in the context of entertainment media (such as games) means joy of creation and freedom of expression; the sense that it was created by someone who loved doing it instead of being dictated and scrutinized by a committee. It has nothing directly to do with being "pervy", though most artists ARE perverts and thus soulful art is often also perverted (as it means the artist was free to do whatever they wished).
>>
>>97463283

Yeeeees, but also kinda no.

Whenever people bring up "Lost Tech", people never consider that maybe, with a bit of time and consideration, you can find it again?

Go back to the 1980's, and shit like blacksmithing armour was a lost art.
We now have people who do it recreationally, and for sports. They figured out how to from looking at shit and thinking.

Same for swordfighting, or fistfighting. Go back ten or thirty years, Oly Fencing and fucking KARATE were the peak of male cqc combat prestige (not quite, but it's representative). Wheras now we've recreated Longsword, developed MMA.

Same shit for water cooled space suit underwear or nuclear reactors. Yeah sure, technically we don't know how they're made because the makers died, but if you got a bunch of motivated specialist nerds together and let them poke at one, they'll inevitably figure it out.

Same shit for trad paintings.
Yes, it's a lifelong skill you need to constantly work on and train in to really git gud, but just because the staircase is big doesn't mean it's not made out of stairs.

Also >>97466515 is just not representative.
Yes, it touches on some important things to consider about modern artists moving away from traditional art (because photographs do images better, and it's harder to compete against the old masters), but fine arts Tertiary ed is not just some cakewalk for modern fops. My buddy did fine arts at uni, and basically had to put out three pieces a day, in whatever medium his professor chose, for three days of the week over the whole of first year. Just to make him familiar with everything, and so he'd do it right the first time
>>

>>97463283
Come on, tell me this art isn't soulful. Look at how dangerous everything looks. He's obviously some magic user, but doesn't look weak at all. He's got more testosterone than any modern barbarian.

>>
>>97469482
Now here's a soulful image. One path leads to the Drow, other leads to the Brain Wipers or whatever they're called. Mind Flayers, that's it. The Mind Flayer is feasting on that woman's brain, looks honest enough. Drow don't seem to be abusing anybody. Why's that? Because they're on a slave raid. They'll take your party away. They have a female with them, meaning they don't even need the numbers to beat you. Left or right, choose your own poison.
>>97475469

>>
>>97463283
Not exactly, but sexuality is a huge part of what it means to be human, an essential aspect of the human soul. A work devoid of human sexuality is not necessarily soulless, but the process of making something less soulful will sap whatever sexuality is in a work. When we call something soulless, typically we are remarking on how it is reduced to a less potentially offensive version, in order to have as broad an appeal as possible. For comparison, we often think of the Hays Code as a culturally conservative standard, because it prohibited sex, violence, and religiously offensive content. But it also prohibited any use of racial slurs in film, because it wasn't about enforcing a traditional religious morality, it was about deliberately being as inoffensive as possible.

It's not even just about the cheesecake art. A distinct lack of passion and romance, a desire to keep things platonic just drains it of it's humanity. It's not even that it needs to be so overt. You don't need to turn into a cartoon wolf every time you see a sexy person and you don't even need a significant romantic plot but to act like there's nothing there really demands a specific kind of focus.

>blacksmithing, longsword, MMA
The processes were all documented, society was just in a new=better phase and didn't care.
The more esoteric stuff like damascus is still lost-ish.
>nuclear reactors
The knowledge isn't even remotely lost, but if it was I highly doubt humanity could get it back
>trad paintings
This is interesting because it's entirely lost to institutional memory in the actual arts, but art history has never been in a better place re: electron microscopes etc.
So the techniques could be revived but the kind of intensive training need to implement it is missing.
In general, books are ingenious for preventing lost knowledge. The only problem is having someone around to read them, e.g. Boeing knows damn well how to build an airplane but has other problems.

It's not the 80s honey.
Besides, they do what the consultants tell them to, especially if they promise them the "new modern audience".

Consultants don't have the finale say in anything. They just tell the people in charge (who is still mostly men) what they want to hear.

Warsloppa is trash by default. It's literally the original slop, a mishmash of various scifi and fantasy tropes awkwardly mashed together. It's like a child who makes an omelette for his parents and puts in every single spice and herb and seasoning because they don't know what they're used for. But at least the child has the excuse of inexperience and age.

Another euro-peon that doesn't understand about context and why it's ok to have a naked statue in a museum but weird to have a double life size realistically painted statue of Bonny Blue naked lying down with her legs spread wide in your front hall.
The fucking autism of this place is unbelievable.

I'm with you on this one. Kind of sick of the extreme goonerism and cope surrounding it.

That being said, nu art does suck. No amount of tits and ass would ever make more corpo modernist slop appealing to anyone. People like Blanche did have better style.

Nice get-o-saurus.

Old dinosaur art was more often than not atrocious. And I don't mean outdated or for kids: I mean atrocious. See https://chasmosaurs.com/

Science marching on aside, I think the problem is that well, yes, documentaries (about dinosaurs or whatever) shouldn't be really "telling a story". At least not in the term of having you root for the killed poor stegosaurus or whatever - the t-rex is an animal as much as the other, and you are doing a nature film. Oh, they probably still do it with lions and gazelles, but less so.

You are right about the "primeval" landscape being something in which artists could get wild, I think, but le'ts be honest: that is not really salveageable unless you're playing sword and sorcery or something like that.

>What led to the whiplash between cheesecake and prudishness? Moid civil war?
Read your Chesterton, retard.

>“The Modern Girl with the lipstick and the cocktail is as much a rebel against the Woman's Rights Woman of the '80's, with her stiff stick-up collars and strict teetotalism, as the latter was a rebel against the Early Victorian lady of the languid waltz tunes and the album full of quotations from Byron: or as the last, again, was a rebel against a Puritan mother to whom the waltz was a wild orgy and Byron the Bolshevist of his age. Trace even the Puritan mother back through history and she represents a rebellion against the Cavalier laxity of the English Church, which was at first a rebel against the Catholic civilisation, which had been a rebel against the Pagan civilisation. Nobody but a lunatic could pretend that these things were a progress; for they obviously go first one way and then the other. But whichever is right, one thing is certainly wrong; and that is the modern habit of looking at them only from the modern end. ”
- G.K. Chesterton, Saint Thomas Aquinas, 1933.

It just goes back and forth. We're in a high-prudishness part of the cycle right now.
>>
>>97484531
I wish we were in the high prudishness part. I think you're misdiagnosing the issue. Society is so pornographic that there's no need for titilation at all. Sex without pleasure and just for its own sake is the current order.

I have a Masters degree in computer science that I finished in 2019. I had 2 different Indian professors during my schooling and they were both complete useless frauds who only taught for 1 semester because we went to the faculty to complain about them.

That's anecdotal, sure, but it's had a pretty significant impact on how I view Indian immigrants in this field.

I decided to actually look up this article, and in addition to the source being "Slay News", it had this to say:

>A recording from the call has emerged online and revealed Fink imploded while raging over the Texas Board of Education canceling $8.5 billion in contracts with BlackRock.
>
>As Slay News reported, Texas joined several states in blocking their funds from going to BlackRock due to the company’s ESG agenda.

So in other words the company was just targeted by mentally deficient rightoids in government and got understandably mad about it. Proves literally nothing, other than that people as stupid as you are in the Texas government, which I already knew.

>how dare you not support billionaire jew CEOs suppressing the wages of the working class with foreign labor and letting insane trannies have access to their kids, all while they keep vacuuming up housing and turn the goyim into a permanent rentoid indentured slave caste as planned in the bible
When did the left become such bootlickers for gigantic megacorporations, judeo-fascism and the bible? Did I miss some NPC update?

I'm not sure that I understand the spite that what I said provokes. I'm a Christian who wants to live in a Christian way. I'm not a weird psycho who believes in demons and and that playing games can send you to hell, but I do feel like that some things shouldn't be just laid out there. I feel like nudity is not a thing that should just be around.
I actually find I agree more often with "wokes" these days than I do with conservatives. The points that feminists makes about the male gaze resonates with me and, to me, has an astounding element of truth to. In some ways they're recreating Christian morality from basic principles, which I think is interesting and probably good for society.
Anyway, I don't know why what I said appears to threaten you all so much. I'm not hurting you. I didn't try to force the guys in that group to live how I wanted. The point of the OP was to (lightly) mock the idea of SOVL and demonstrate that it's just thinly veiled excuses for hedonism, as far as I can tell, at least with regard to fantasy art.

Pic related has more artistic value (MUH SOVL) than any of the stuff so far posted. She looks realistic (while I agree that realism is not the only value worth talking about) and because there's less attention put on the body, the face and body language and the emotion is carrying the image. You can almost feel the bone weariness she feels, the weight of the armor, something that again resonates with me having served in the infantry and felt that exhaustion. By contrast the pictures you guys have posted remind of nothing so much as store dummies. Beautiful bodies displayed, but lifeless, with a lack of expression and emotion.
