Has anyone played Warmaster using multibased Warhammer minis? I'm tempted to try just because I don't like Warhammer as a game system, but realistically don't know how many units you could fit on a table using increased base sizes for the bigger models

So you also dislike Warmaster's rules? Now I'm even more confused.
>>

Christ, I dislike Warhammer. I already own a bunch of Warhammer minis. I want to play a game with them. I'm asking if anyone has played Warmaster, a far superior set of rules for fighting mass battles, using Warhammer miniatures. If so, what potential issues do you need to look out for using increased base sizes.
>>
>>
>>97842004
I've not personally, but I knew one guy who did it though I didn't get any of the details, and I think Rick Priestley and Jervis Johnson played Warmaster like that at least according to a video interview I saw.

Miao puts out, and does it so often she's called the mother/matriarch of a city.
Don't know if Alextrassa or however she's named matches her, or if she's a generic "too tuff for you" girl. So far, Miao has the advantage.

How doable is it? They pretty much peaked in 5th and technically got a mini-army book in 6th, but could they work at 1000-2000 points without using them as allies?

Had a fun casual game today, my beastmen vs a Khorne (Heralds of Darkness army of infamy) force at 1000 points.
It was a fun game, was up against a throng of spawns, marauder horsemen and chaos knights, I scraped together a victory over the giant chaos spawn at the cost of my minotaurs, and that freed my bestigors up to wreck havoc on the remaining spawns and then moving onto marauders on horses who arrived from ambush who had been bogged down against my Ungors.
Another highlight was my bray-shaman using the Soul Eater spell to inflict 3 wounds on the warlord after it lost a wound in a duel against a Gor champion, removing it from play immediately.

Rumors have it something is in store for tomb kings, and the general direction of gw is to make their mainline products only in plastic.
I don't trust in gw to make plastic ushabti that can rival the metal ones, and I don't think they are anywhere close to a priority compared to the warriors and chariots, or scorpions and giant, but if they had enough resources to give such a large roster for cathay in such a short time, as well as updating chaos models, and even the tomb kings characters, then a full redesign in plastic of the range might be happening within the mid term.

If that Battalion box leak is real I doubt they’ll refresh them anytime soon, I think unless there’s an aspect of the army not yet represented on the tabletop but appears in lore (like the Norsca getting models as a part of the Marauders refresh) then I think Tomb Kings will remain firmly retro. While I don’t mind a refresh in theory, a refresh would likely make the skeleton warriors less naked like the Deathrattle, which I think removes some of the charm of the skellies.

>>
>>
>>97843130
It never had anything to do with that.
TKs were unpopular because after Undead split in 6th edition, they were the poor sibling of VC, with worse rules and worse share of Undead units. It had NOTHING to do with how their models looked like.

I was actually there when the split happened and played both 5th ed and 6th ed, so I know that for A FACT. People who played Undead en masse decided to play Vampire Counts instead of Khemri. Why? Because vampires were absolute monsters in combat and curse of years spell (along with other necromantic spells) was absolute army killer. Meanwhile Khemri got literally nothing. Both armies shared the same skeleton models. So shut the fuck up.

6th. The core rulebook is just lovely in terms of artwork and flavour text. I got into the hobby right around the Storm of chaos campaign and the release of Ogre kingdoms, so while the pictures in the core rules looked very oldhammer every codex looked modern and fresh (but still hand sculpted and full of soul).
I also like 8th because of the increased randomness with magic dice and charge range.
>Least favorite
Don't know anything about rules after 8th or before 6th. I'm all about the lore and flavour of the setting, and stopped following the updates when AoS was revealed. I just transitioned into WFRP, 40k and more recently Mordheim.
The Mordheim community is more alive than ever and most of what I paint has to do with that game, but I still dabble in random figures/units that would go into a 6th edition warhammer army

I dunno, a big part of the appeal is that it's faction agnostic (so you can defend it as any army), and they might make it heavily Empire or Bretonnia themed or something, or maybe it'll just look like poorly designed WoWshit. I'm very unimpressed with most of the AoS terrain aside from that one smashed up Sigmar statue, and they somehow managed to fuck up KOTR on Foot which should've been the easiest slam dunk ever.

When in doubt, bright red. The majority of medieval art shows horses in red harnesses. Also yellow or "buff" or blue. 8th. I'm still playing it. Definitely the most interactive edition. Whether i win or lose, i always enjoy playing it. It also was the edition i was playing when I started to just enjoying MY hobby and stopped caring about chasing any sort of meta. (It also meant curating a group of opponents instead of relying on random pickup games at the semi-local GW)
The people i play with nowadays are also great and make for fun opponents.
>least favourite
6th. Probably less to do with the edition itself and more with the whole environment in which I played (very abrasive, sweaty, try-hard, WAAC bullshit...) it just tainted that whole period of warhammer for me.
------‐--
I also played warhammer reinassance (which is a remake/remix of 4th and 5th edition combined) and it's a good ruleset if you like that era of the game.
An honorable mention goes to 3rd edition, which is wacky and fun. Any game where I can field, in my army, a dwarf riding a giant bat deserves a try.
7th ed... it was fine. I played tons of it, but I encountered most of the same issues I encountered while playing 6th. The rules were, fine. But fixed random charges really meant my dwarfs were pigeonholed into just 1 or 2 builds if I cared about being somewhat competitive (which at the time I unfortunately did).
TOW... I never tried and have honestly no interest in it. I'm sure it's fine, but I really can't be bothered with it.

If you want to play both, you're better to base according to the conventions of 6th edition, then use movement trays for TOW that space the models out the additional width. You can play 6th with two armies both based for TOW, but if you have any hope of getting a 6th scene going you're going to need grogs and 6th vs TOW basing is just a faff.

From a quick view it looks like 2 dwarf halves From BfSP and a handful of the quarrelers/thunderers dwarfs.
You seem to be missing one of 2 cannons (including crew), the slayers and one of the Thanes.
The thunderers/quarrelers came in a box of 16 and I only see 3/4.
This looks like a very typical starting army for many a dwarf players during 7th edition.
The starter set was so popular that it absolutely flooded the secondary markets for almost a decade, and it was available for obscenely cheap . I remember ebay auctions where you'd see people buy the 10 thunderers for like $1.50 or $2 for the cannon and crew.
You couldn't find a dwarf army without that Thane until the bitter end of the game.
People always look down upon these sculpts but I really like them. Definitely better than the plastic ones sold alongside them.
During 7th ed, I had a 25 strong unit of these warriors I'd deploy in almost every game. it ended up surviving the whole edition. So when 8th came around I decided that they had become long enough to be promoted to longbeard. Painted over their beards in grey and white, gave their shields a new colour scheme and used them as longbeards.
To this day (I still play 8th) I can field up to 60 of these of these warriors and I will always use them as longbeards.
All in all you've got a strong start for a dwarf army.
I say strong model-wise. I don't play TOW so I have no idea if they'd be any competitive.
But hopefully you picked dwarfs because you think they're cool and not because you think they're strong.

Main weakness DoW have in 6th ed is the lack of magical items (you only get the vanilla ones everyone can use) and more army specific rules.
Strengths are the unit variety, since you have the vanilla army list, regiments of renown and a good chunk of ogre kingdom units.

Yes, it's the best edition of Warhammer Fantasy.
You probably wouldn't like it because it's very simulationist and narrative, something that nuhammer players seethe about. When your hero gets hit he doesn't just take wounds from an abstract video game style health pool, he can lose a limb, slowly bleed out, gets knocked unconscious, fall off his mount, etc. scenarios and terrain mattered a lot, heroe were fully customizable since it still had its RPG influences, where their personality traits mattered. Lots and lots of charts (I'm getting hard thinking about it)
In other words, it's a pure form of wargaming before Warhammer Fantasy got tainted by the 40k tournament scene

Friend came over and played a 1k game of WHF 6th ed for a change. A clean field but for narrative purposes, we were in Troll Country!
A Tzeentchian warband encounters the roaming warband of Snagrog's ladz. At 1k points, the battle ensued!
The Chaos got the initiative and trudged forward, preparing to flatten the greenskins. The Orcs had animosity strike, Snagrog's Big uns getting a "Get em!" Result but thankfully, no one was in the charge arc so they squabbled.
Everyone else slowly advanced, the trolls advancing seamlessly. Then the chaos struck. The Exalted Tzeentch champion cast cursed magic, slaying 5 Orcs and twisting them into horrors!
"WAT DA ZOG??" roated Grimtoof, the beleagured Black Orc. The orcs cut them down, the instability banishing the rest to the warp.
The arrer boyz fired at the knights and failed to pierce their armour. Then, disaster struck. Breaking from the lines, the hounds bolted into the arrer boyz! Tearing them asunder, receiving no damage, they broke and fled, being run down by the hounds! The others pursued into Snagrig's big uns.
First blood to Chaos!

I have a million things I'd change. First I would change cavalry to the behave like actual cavalry, where they charge and they pull back and regroup, charge again, etc. instead of engaging in line infantry protracted melee. I would make skirmishes behave more like skirmishers.
I would allow units to change formation from ranks into an open unranked formation so they can enter terrain/buildings and hold it down.

Snagrog's big uns passed their panic. Another wave of horrors burst from the boyz who were once more banished. Seeing their boss get stuck in, the trolls charged forward and hit the chaos knights, who passed fear.
Grotfang, the Boar Boy Big Boss, charged forward with a mighty WAAAGH into the chosen knights and chaos general. He bellowed a challenge and met the chaos general in melee. To his horror, the chaos general was unscathed and in a great swing of his flail, Grotfang was slain. One Chosen fell but so did a boar boy. They broke and fled, run down by the chosen!
In contrast, the chaos knights suffered horribly, being vomited on by the trolls. Three Chaos Knights died in agony. The last knight struck back but to no avail. Losing the combat, they broke instantly and fled. The trolls, miraculously, held their ground.

After breaking the hounds previously, the chaos warriors charged into Snagrog's Big uns. The great Big Boss and the Chaos Champion met. A terrible swing screeched off Snagrog's tough hide. With a bellow, one counter strike bisected the Chaos Champion. Two big uns fell further, with a warrior dying in retaliation. Due to numbers and ranks, with musician, Snagrog's big uns won. They broke and fled, Snagrog in hot pursuit.
Grimtoof's mob charged the marauders and also broke them, but could not catch either! The chosen knights slammed into the rear of the normal orc mob, who broke and fled, with the chosen knights chasing but also failing to catch!
The warriors rallied but Snagrog's big uns, passing animosity, charged and used the banner of butchery to add an attack to each one on the front rank. The Warriors lost 4 of their number, broke and fled again!
The trolls faced the Chosen and marauders who both charged and wiped them. We forgot fear check but unlikely to have stopped them.
The Night goblin shaman wiped the two hound units and the big uns chased the warriors off the field.
As the dust settled, a minor victory to chaos and Snagrog gathered his boyz and retired from the field, with the night goblij shaman frying his own brain and forgetting his own spell.
6th was very fun but the QOL changes of TOW feels smoother. Trolls were great, murdering abd traumatising the chaos knights from the field. The big uns TROUNCED the warriors. In hindsight, i should have given the boars the banner of butchery instead of the big uns.
Overall a fun game with lots of good fights. WAAAAAGGHHH!!

Some quick thoughts on 6th edition:
- Panic is insanely punishing. I got lucky to not have Snagrog's Big Uns run away when the archers broke from combat right beside them.
- While obviously not a competitive game, I did find animosity not *as* bad as I anticipated but in my attempt to overprepare, I ended up coneding 100 extra points due to my Boar Boyz having the anti animosity banner. Might have to just disregard it entirely next time.
- Both my friend and I enjoyed the guess charge range, that was really neat and added a more fun dynamic to the game.
- Trolls are shockingly good shock troops. They annihilated the Chaos Knights and just instantly broke them. Stupidity came up twice but not a huge issue.
- Magic felt quite fun. My friends Exalted Champion of Tzeentch just blasted magic all day every day with his 6 power dice. That said, I also enjoyed throwing brain bursta around.
- The lack of being able to reform AFTER a pursuit felt very hard. You more or less spend an entire turn reforming or out of the game once you run an opponent down.
Overall though I liked it. Here is the picture of what was left. Despite trying to use brain bursta, only at the end did I cast it, even got a triple 6 at the end! I should have shot it at the Chosen Knights instead of the hounds in the hopes to kill half the unit but alas.
Funnily enough, the Night Goblin Shaman forgot his only spell in the final turn on a miscast, which was quite funny. Despite the Minor Loss, I found the Orcs still as fun as TOW, so, more or less settled that my heart is truly green.

I aspire to Corehammer, where armies are made up of line infantry units supported by just a few special/rare units. Here is what I would do:
1) For all morale tests, a unit adds +1 to their leadership for each friendly unit within n inches (somewhere between 3-6 inches, I reckon. I haven't figured out which distance would make it fair and prevent WAACfags from breaking it)
2) less competitive option for pick-up games compared to matched play: before the game (probably best to arrange ahead of meeting) each army has a set 'core' selection for their army, including an army leader of their choice and some essential core units that must be taken of a minimum size. Each player draws up a selection of heroes, special, and rare units (haven't quite figured out how this would work) and rolls dice to determine from a list (or lists) which units are available for that battle.
3) The greatest departure from the core game: an order system to make heroes more than just fighters. Roll 1D6 at the start of the player's turn, adding the 'command' level of each hero in the army (level 1 or level 2 depending on hero/wizard level) to determine how many orders can be made. An order can be given to an individual unit, which is able to move as complexly as it wants, or a group order can be given to multiple units all within a certain range of each other, but they can only carry out one simple order, like move forward, turn, etc.
>>
>>

>I haven't figured out which distance would make it fair and prevent WAACfags from breaking it
Because there isnt one. Its trivial to get 3/4 units within close distance of each other, especially for the sort of armies of cheap garbage that would benefit from it the most (its not elves and dwarfs that need the leadership).
So you just have skaven with perma LD10 all over again, because youre an idiot.
>before the game (probably best to arrange ahead of meeting) each army has a set 'core' selection for their army, including an army leader of their choice and some essential core units that must be taken of a minimum size. Literally unworkable. Not in a "this is bad design" (it is) but in a "this does not function and could never function in the physical world" sort of way.
>orders
cool idea poorly thought out. Would require essentially a ground up redesign of the game to function and actively discourage what you are trying to do (lots of basic units). Because you have now tied the function of units to heroes, meaning a tax exists one way or the other.

It was flawed in its own ways, but sure, it worked. But 6e list creation is nothing like what is being proposed by anon.
Anons idea, if I am to understand what he wrote correctly, is basically this:
You have a core selection of units which is ALWAYS present in your army - every WOC army always has 1x aspiring champion, 20x marauders, 10x chaos warriors, 1x chariot (or whatever) (already bad).
When you play a game, you dont write a list, first you have to roll to see what units are available for you to write a list from. Meaning you dont know if you can use any given character, special or rare unit at any given game. This means you must both own essentially the entire faction as models and carry your entire collection with you at all times (and also means every game needs an extra 30minutes/1 hour as people figure out what the fuck their army is even going to be before each game).
The idea isnt just "bad in terms of balance" or "this is not good gameplay/game design", its something that does not work due to existing in physical reality (it would be feasible, if still bad, in a video game).

The "orders" thing is also just not at all the 6e force org chart. The closest equivalent would be the current (and controversial!) HH force org where you have to take characters to unlock more units.
Its a system that does not work for fantasy, or rather "it could work (physically it could function) but it would be awful for the game and kill multiple strategies dead".
Hero spam is only viable for a small number of factions (the ones with cheap shit heroes, empire, greenskins, skaven, so on). Every other faction would instead be forced to simply "run fewer units", so deathstar play, hyper elites, because trying to play strategic/tricksy (via things like MSU or wide armies) is now actively punished by a tax of heroes, and paying an extra 300pts to have your wide army of marauders work is simply never going to happen.

Because those peasants are surprisingly solid, plus the box itself is basically a full army. I’d need a few more units for 2000pts and I’ll never have to buy those peasants again. For less than the 200 I paid that’s a steal in my book

Bro what the helmets are my favorite part
>>
>>97847356
Of the two suggestions though, orders are definetly the one closer to being "functional". There is a world where the game has that sort of command and control mechanic of top down order play (and armies without leaders are left as largely uncontrollable forces in many cases) and it works and is fun. But that world is one where the game is basically bottom up built to accomodate it, where its a system tailored around the various factions and their intricacies and isnt just "roll a D6 and add character level"

>>
>Play empire bro plays chaos
>Bring a couple outriders & cannons
>'broo you're whittling down all my shit before I can get in melee bring more infantry'
>bring state troops
>they vaporize as soon as any chaos infantry unit touches it
Is there just not a way to make the game feel balanced between these two factions? It feels like either I bring guns and have a decent chance and slimming him down & making it a fair fight, or I bring no guns and lose because every chaos unit stomps my shit in melee.

That is more of a Chaos issue than an Empire one. Chaos relies entirely on getting into melee and unfortunately there are a lot of "trap" units which actually hurt the armies ability the more you invest in them i.e Chaos Warriors.
If your friend had Dragon Ogres, Warhounds to shield his hard hitters and some magic to support, he could do better. Heck, I would guess he doesn't even have Chosen Knights.
It's not your fault, its just the sub optimal Chaos unit choices are just that bad in performing what they do best: Get into melee and kill.
>>
>>97847280
>Literally unworkable. Not in a "this is bad design" (it is) but in a "this does not function and could never function in the physical world" sort of way.
It's how games like Nevermind the Billhooks works, which is pretty popular and well regarded.
>>
>>97847434
>If your friend had Dragon Ogres, Warhounds to shield his hard hitters and some magic to support, he could do better. Heck, I would guess he doesn't even have Chosen Knights.
He has a 5 man unit of chosen knights, besides that nothing else but warriors & chariots. Which was the problem I told him, but he wasn't hearing it. Hopefully he at least takes my advice to bring a lv 4 wizard so he at least has some kind of ranged abilities
>>
>>97847434
Thats definetly a chaos issue in 6e/TOW (less so 8e where the in-book balance is better), but the wider trend is true regardless.
>>97847403
"no".
Chaos is a very skewed army, they want to do melee fistycuffs and are (when properly made as a book) very very good at it.
Empire is not a melee fistycuffs army. They are not very good at it. "generally". They have some units that are (demigryphs) but the basic empire infantry has a snowballs chance in hell against chaos infantry (and should have a snowballs chance in hell, it would be bad if they didnt). For this reason empire gets cannons and other powerful shooting, which are meant to whittle down the enemy before they get up close and rape you.
Chaos on the other hand has tools designed to shut down cannons (marauder horsemen and warhounds) and a lot of fast units designed to hit fast and hard (cavalry, dragons).
It sounds like your opponent is bringing a very weak chaos army (chaos warriors are awful in TOW, not even in a "well theyre too slow" way, theyre just bad), so try simply bringing "less potent" shooting. Less cannons and more handgunners and crossbowmen or whatever. But on the whole its just a mismatch between armies, chaos does one thing super well, so most armies want to simply avoid fighting them in their specialty if they can avoid it and exploit the things they cant do.
>>
>>97847530
Yeah thats an issue. Chariots gp down to concentrated fire easy as Empire and his entire army relies on the chosen knights, who can get focused down hard. He needs chaff or another unit of cavalry, either normal knights or marauder horsemen.
>>
>>97847292
Turnip28 also does orders get well. Characters can issue orders to your regiments, yet, those orders are limited and you usually have less orders than units. When an order is issued, you roll to perform it, with a roll bonis; on the other hand, if a unit has to perform an action without being ordered, the roll becomes harder and the unit must act once you've run out of orders.
This would be really hard to work into Warhammer, though, as Turnip's characters are more of a logistical element rather than proper beatsticks. The game also works with alternate activations and isn't divided into phases, so not kosher for Warhammer players

Nevermind the Billhooks does so many mechanics right.

You can get a 4x8 sheet of plywood or insulation foam and just lay it on top of any table when it's time to game. People often cut it in half to have two 4x4 sheets for easier storage, and just use a piece of duct tape to hold them together so they don't slide during the game. Throw a battlemat or cloth on top et voilà. You can use the extra foot on either end of a 8x4 to keep books, dice, models, etc. so they aren't scattered on the battlefield, or be a man and just play on the full 8x4.
>>
>>
>>97847323
>Meaning you dont know if you can use any given character, special or rare unit at any given game. This means you must both own essentially the entire faction as models and carry your entire collection with you at all times
The reason why I said this should be worked out ahead of time is for this reason. Obviously, this would also only be an optional way of playing, so if you're the type to turn up to a games night with a set points list, then that would work better for you. But, a lot of people share their lists with a set opponent several days in advance anyway. That's how people do it at my local club.
What I'm proposing is you have a list of special and rare units that you DO own, and roll to randomise what is in your force for that game. The point of doing this is to play games where you and your opponent have an interesting challenge of working with what tools you have, rather than tailoring a 'perfect' list which has lots of synergy and gimmicks. There will be games where your opponent happens to have a more powerful selection of units, but there should be fun and some tactical challenge in making what you have available for you work.
>>
>>97848008
>What I'm proposing is you have a list of special and rare units that you DO own
Most people own the models they use with maybe a small overspill. This is a concept that both requires a 10000pts collection and actively punishes doing so. It does not work. This is a ruleset made for and exclusively for the sort of grogs who have giant armies bigger than they would ever use and own most of the roster.
>lot of people share their lists with a set opponent several days in advance anyway.
And many dont. You cant make mechanics around "you should have your game planned out a week in advance" because you do not always have a week of advance "do nothing". You cannot write a game around "well we have a local discord where we talk all the time and everyone puts their lists up in advance (they also do it here mind you)" because you, as a designer, cannot guarantee that this will exist.
You are also at that point asking for people to roll to see their army restrictions at home. Which also does not work. This is just leading to the "yea man I rolled really good stats" problem.
>The point
The point does not matter. Your intentions and goals are irrelevant, what matters is the actual effect and execution. You are designing a game, not explaining yourself before st peter. "GAI" is not a thing, tomb kings were "intended" to work and be consistent in 8th ed, they werent.
>optional way of playing
Okay, fair enough. That fixes a lot of the issues with it. As an optional way of list building it could work, but then it would never really be for "pickup games", which are generally about being as low friction as possible.
>>

I feel like there are too little units that are in the table at 2000 points. The standard tournament should require you to play at 2700 points and put a limit on hero hammer. Core should make up 40% of your list as well.

T1 chaos winner first
The chaos sorcerers simply fly over the palisades and are within spitting distance, intending to pen in the empire army and but them in their own fortifications.
and fly up - the tzeench block moves up on foot at least.
Empires turn, road wardens attempted to march but the sight of almost the entire northerner force flying at them on spectral steeds understandably made the horses quite reticent- they failed their march test and were thus unable to shoot too.
Von heffleheim hurriedly brought his weapon on target and unleashed a fusillade- which went immediately awry- threatening to explode if not for his quick intervention. -his shots veered wide off course as a result. - very fortunate his sponsor couldn’t see such things from the other side of the palisade.
The forester captain with his men- and the priest sprint for the tower.
The empire line preps to receive a charge and support at least- can’t get out of it when they both flew so close!
(fortunately I expected this and road wardens had vanguarded in front of both the exit points- limiting chaos steed movement.

T2:
The chaos force held back- choosing not to charge the obvious trap of fire and flee outriders drawing them out and into the path of the demigryph.
Empires turn 2:
The road wardens attempt to charge with swiftstride their 6 inch charge(to clear the way for the demigryphs ) and still cannot control their horses, they fail to charge the 6 (1,2, ,1) and bring great shame- the demigryphs also fail their charge-
This then blocks the way for the gunners racing for the door, who have to wait behind the demigryphs gnashing their teeth.
The empire swordsman with the bsb however don’t - and have to contend with a big fight chaos unit with no support! , oops. Somehow they draw- though the empire does lose an entire rank. Oof
In shooting von heffleheim unleashes death- and despite heavy cover from an obscuring combat- kills 4 chaos warriors with 14 shots.

GW just got incredibly lucky for the most part. dainton, kopinski, smith, gibson, they had some of the most popular and prolific fantasy artists in the world working in their studio, despite not being particularly good at crediting their artists or paying them. it wasnt for any good effort on GWs part but just sheer luck mostly that all of these phenomenal artists ended up in the same studio at the same time. several of them came in as juniors and just happened to be of tremendous skill through happenstance and a good deal of effort on the artists part, but GW wasnt an especially lucrative studio for the artists and didn't go out of its way to seek out or pay extraordinary talent

Tell me anon, why do you think a candle is better than a lightbulb? Why do you allow the degeneracy of nostalgia to blind you, fantasising about a past that never was?

There's a lot to be said about metal models and why they're so great. Being able to bend them a little lets you get up to some devious business, the sheer variety in poses means you can have a lot of different starting points for conversions, but perhaps most importantly of all the sculpts are just cool and unique. I'm glad I ripped open a blister box that had been sealed for 30 years when I made this fella and I'm even more glad I got his mount from a fellow collector who no longer wanted it. Very few people have a daemon prince/chaos lord that looks like this and I think that's special. Plastic kits are nice, they're easy to work with, relatively cheaper to acquire, and tend to look good straight out of the box, but they're also a little generic. Think about it! How many people have the exact same model acting as their general? How many shugengan lords on their longmas look the exact same? It makes a fella wonder.

Bruv do you find painting the unprimed resin doo-dads on the base a pain?
Also how do Bestigors go in a game? In terms of fulfilling the fantasy not so much power level etc.
Do they feel good to play?
I'm on the fence as to whether or not I add them to my army.

I put them on there after the models are done, then I paint a liquid primer over them before I finish them all up, that way I don't have to paint around them when doing the actual mini
>Also how do Bestigors go in a game?
They are a decent frontline unit, but a bit overcosted imo, but I don't play by the meta anyways so I always try to have at least a small group with my beastlord for the vibes.
>Do they feel good to play?
If you can get off a charge (and unless the enemy has higher than I4), and primal fury, you can hack and slash down a lot, especially if you have beastlord or wargor to soften the target up first.
All in all they are pretty fun, get them if you like them, they can be a solid center force to compliment gors and ungors.

If they had bestial charge and a two weapon optional build they would be fantastic. Forcing them into great weapons is what really hurts them. I think they are supposed to be a middle ground between gors and minotaurs but being double the price of gors to get stubborn, heavy armor, and AP2, and 6 being a handful of points less than 2 minotaurs which do everything they do but better makes them just bad.
They do look cool tho so.

After reading Giantslayer it's kinda bullshit how easy it is for elves to take a dragon.
Dragons are insanely rare now and it's only Caldor elves who even have a chance of riding one. In Giantslayer it says that all the HE nobles ride griffons, they have griffon trick riding competitions, etc. HE lords should only get a dragon option if they take blood of Caldor

Also bought a Chaos Lord on Manticore, he'll probably not be an ex-bretonnian, maybe an ex-imperial. I DID get a chaos samurai from wargames foundry for a BSB

I fell asleep oops.
I forgot to take pictures as it got too intense, but from
Here heffleheim got in his groove and massacred chaos every turn - starting with the battered Chas unit that ground down the white wolves to a man! - and over an into the encampment, the ‘chaff’ chaos is shot and destroyed at close range by the hellblaster.
, lastly the priest and bow captain finally get to the tower. They will miss up until t5, when the bow captain does a malice’s 4 damage shot into one chaos never- panicking them backwards - they rally but the damage is done, in my final turn Vonheffleheim shoots 18 times and reduces the unit to just the 2 characters.
- it’s a shame the biggest unit didn’t have the anti shoot banner.
Anyway a good a picture of heffleheim and the army. Hope everyone’s playing games.

Whatever sounds cool and entertaining should always be considered a possibility in roleplaying. Perhaps the daemon's skeleton body or skeleton remains as long as the temple stands? As the flesh slowly decays the bones show glyphs similar as those carved on the walls of the temple.
>plenty of official artwork depicting daemon skulls, so the whole "instability" of daemons should not be taken too seriously when playing through a good storyline

I play TOW:
>>97847835
>>97847865
Pics from my most recent game. Beastmen are really good and fun in TOW, I think a lot of beastbros here do TOW, sure beats the later editions of WHF for them.
>>
>>97853112
they are objectively the best army in TOW currently in terms of rules. The army comp is not restrictive, the big range of units are nearly all viable, the magic is good, the items are insanely good etc. Compared to WoC where you have four? viable units, extremely lacklustre mark of chaos rules, pointless restrictions, the items are mid to bad.
>>
>>97853178
Still, for some reason the army isn't popular on tournaments or generally popular. I never seen an army of beastmen myself my whole (grog) life. The only moment I saw them on table was when I fielded them myself as allies for my WoC during End Times.
>>
>>97850225
>>97853055
The first. The second is widely received as being overpowered in 6th. It was made right before 7th ed dropped, so it was made with those rules in mind, so it ended up dominating in the twilight of 6th.
>>
>>97853178
Beastmen don't really have that many viable units either and even with WoCs issues they have way more unit variety that is viable compared to Beastmen. WoC are also able to better make use of Gaze of the Gods, both are pretty neck and neck when it comes to magic items and the Daemon Prince shits on every hero that the Beastmen can muster.
>>
>>
>>97853279
This. Beastmen were and probably are to this day poor brother of WoC.
WoC have few advantages over beastmen:
1. you don't need many models to field them - your regular dude is a solid choice;
2. their warlords are absolute killing machines;
3. they have access to daemon princes;
4. they share many monsters with beastmen;
5. easy to paint.
In other words - from a new player perspective that wants to play chaos, WoC are more beginner-friendly than beastmen. So unless GW overpowers them and making them meta in the process, they will always be a niche faction. Anons like them because of raep meme, but that's it.

>>

>>97853186
This.
I've been playing beastmen since 7th, and I've been the only beastmen army I've ever seen in person. I think someone posted last thread that they were the second least played army before TOW came out. They are being propped up by WAACfags right now, but I bet their player base drops back to old numbers once they get power crept.
>>
>>97853689
I'm going to assume most here play in old groups with many who've been around since 7th because in literally any TOWdlers group beastmen are one of the most common picks, especially because 3D printing is so easy with them. I wonder if they have particularly bad representation in the US also, since in Europe you see beastmen armies all over the place.
>>
>>97854132
>TOWlders
I wonder if that is the WAACfag boost tho. People new to the hobby since around 2015 or so only seem to play to win in my experience, regardless of which game system.
On a separate topic, I thought of a possible way to boost/fix bestigors. Take away close order and give them back Raider. Then they have a cool purpose again.

>>
>>

Beastmen are popular for similar reasons to bretonnia. Theyre powerful and accessible.
This isnt to say "people only play the strongest stuff", but people do not generally want to get into or learn the F- tier "needs a 25% handicap" armies. The only real exception to that historically is WoC, and theyre basically the posterboys and the most accessible army by an order of magnitude.

I think Bestigors are fine where they are, they are still your only option for 10+ strength 6 attacks and are fine bunkers. They are also one of those units that attract an inordinate amount of attention from opponents who then forget to shut down your drogre and ghorgon flanks.
>>
>>97854828
Sadly disagree because minotaurs spike harder with primal fury, take hits better, and can use hand weapon shield to get both the 2AP and the armor bonus for almost the same price.
The only difference is being able to embed a character, and I would argue gors do that better, but that's a much closer argument with bestigors in that regard.
