When you see the various avatars and shit that roam around Strixhaven and think about the concept of Lorehold, the plane actually has potential to be interesting but then you realize 90% of it is some faggoty Glee shit and only 1 guild gives a fuck about the outside world

Blue doesn't usually get p/t boosting effects. They often get to make things small and rarely get to set things to mid-power P/T (4/4 or 5/5) but I don't feel that Mirror Entity style p/t setting is blue. It's most similar to something like Kessig Wolf Run where you just turn a mana sink into huge damage. It should 100% have green in its cost and I think could work as either WG or UG comfortably. Mono blue is, in my opinion, a bad design.

Anon, using this to make anything bigger then 4/4 is staggeringly innefficient, and Blue gets X/X power and toughness anyway.
>>97856060
Yes and Blue also gets staggeringly innefficient growth spells involving base power. They're a classic. Dreadful as the Storm, Biomass Mutation, Mercurial Transformation for one that can both shrink and grow, Octavia Living Thesis, Octopus Umbra, Serpetine Ambush, etc.

Do you genuinely not understand how these are different?
My objection is that blue should not have combat tricks that allow you to generate power/toughness with no upper limit. Candleep Inspiration is not even fucking close to what I describe and I don't actually think Gigantoplasm should be mono-blue either but 'at least' it is restricted to the one clone so I can't swing in with three 1/1s and then pump the unblocked one to lethal.
>it's inefficient
Fuck off that doesn't matter when it comes to what a color should and shouldn't do. Black's enchantment removal is also inefficient and that's a fucking travesty as well.
>Blue gets X/X power and toughness anyway
It shouldn't and even if it did the problem is the ability to boost power/toughness as a combat trick with no upper limit.
>>97856132
Yes it is worse but it is still an offensive combat trick that serves as a mana sink. It should have green in its color identity. I'm not even super happy with the 'target creature gains base p/t 4/4 until end of turn' at instant speed but I consider that a bend rather than a break.

>>97856169
Seems decent, similar to Broodheart Engine but you can sac creatures instead of itself and it doesn't let you surveil. Doesn't really synergize with the rest of the set though, which is odd. Most of the creatures you want to reanimate are either proxy spells via prepared or prefer you cast them by paying a bunch of colors.

>>97856246
That's literally just your opinion. I showed you there is plenty of precedent everywhere for blue to get X/X toughness effects, some from over a literal decade ago.
If you're pumping a creature to lethal with blue then you're either spending a staggering amount of mana on it which makes it no different from colorless or you're spending the normal blue pump spell value (but worse). It's literally just fine.

The plan of the current antagonist (probably Jace) threatens the future of Arcavios, causing the archaics, who exist in a sort of odd state of time that only works if the future is more-or-less set, because they're oracles that, upon dying, are sent back to the past to relive history, so they go berserk due to becoming paradoxes.

Bear:
Solid rate with death touch. Spell sets up gy for practically the whole game with a very solid chance of hitting.
Witch:
Solid rate. Dtutor is strong as fuck. Seems solid for reanimation/ blink. 6 mana 5/4 with Dtutor is solid. My guess is that the reprep is flavor text.
I like the designs. I think that both are very strong. I'm not sure if id add the bear to my unpowered cube, but I'd likely replace sidisi with the vamp dt

WotC made the curious decision of making a whole big book of Strixhaven for D&D. Nobody really understands why. There are plenty of planes that players would be interested in getting a sourcebook for. Arcavios was not a popular ask by any stretch. But this exists. It's all very confusing.
>>
>>97857391
I can actually tell what they are thinking. A lot of modern D&D players are into the whole "friends in college or a coffee shop" theme. It's a kind of person. They are into Harry Potter too. It's a whole thing-a cringe as fuck one.
This does make me think about how cool a Bloomburrow D&D book would be though

It looks like some kind of magic photograph, yes, but nothing implies that it moves.
The kid misses his parents because he's away from home, and he has a photo of his family to show that. That's it. That's the concept of the card. Meanwhile Harry's album literally doesn't include him, because he wasn't born. It's not an album of his family, that's the fucking point of it, it's an album of his parents living their lives with their friends. He's not homesick because his family sucks ass and he'd rather stay in Hogwarts.

>she hates planeswalkers and helps Kasmina traumatize her friends

>he doesn't copy texts, cheat, or betray his friends, but rather steals books and sends them back home
>they were all invited because Kasmina has a long list of potential planeswalkers and they were on it
>her plan is to use them as fuel to reignite her own spark because it almost worked for Bolas
>also she wants to separate the two planes that merged to form Arcavios because the fusion stifles their potential or something
>and she seems to theorize that aether is so abundant on Kaladesh/Avishkar because of the Mending somehow
>Kasmina's home plane seems to be Antausia

>Eula loses her virginity to Segante in their dorm
>Kequia and Jamira seem to hook up at the end

>plenty of precedent
You dumb lying nigger.
You showed exactly one example of an infinitely scalable blue effect that is also NOT a combat trick. I'm not sure what dumbfuck retard land you come from, but where I come from 'one' is not a lot.
>If you're pumping a creature to lethal with blue then...
You shouldn't be allowed to do that at all. If red had a 6R "Destroy target enchantment" I'd be bitching that it breaks the color pie as well. I don't understand how YOU don't understand that rate is not the issue it is the effect existing at all.
>>97856460
There is a significant amount of precedent for setting P/T I agree. On ocassion it gets them as combat tricks that likely make your small creature bigger as well. X spells that power up a creature however, are firmly green these days and the ones that just power up power are historically black and probably red in modern magic.
>>97856408
Auras boosting P/T is something that every color has access to and I cannot believe that you, in good faith, consider this to be equivalent to a combat trick that is also a mana sink that is also flexible P/T setting.
>>97857225
>>97857570
Yes. UG is allowed to do unlimited pump which I said in my initial post you illiterate retard. It is telling to me that your only ability to "BTFO" me involves either completely missing the point and posting shit like Majestic Metamorphosis or Candlekeep Inspiration or just straight up posting a green card.
>B-B-BUT HYBRID MEANS MONO-BLUE
In that case it also means mono green you dumb nigger. If your best way of showing me that 'blue gets this effect in pie' is to show me a monogreen card then that's not very convincing. Surely you can find me a card that is JUST mono blue that is an instant speed mana sink that turns any creature into an infinitely scaling beater since there is, and I'm quoting you here, "plenty of precedent everywhere".

There's every card in blue that sets base power to X/X. We can go through them one at a time:
>Better Offer
Not a real card.
>Biomass Mutation
UG card
>Candlekeep Inspiration
Not infinitely scalable
>Fluros of Myra's Marvels
Not a real card. Also not infinitely scalable.
>Gigantoplasm
Only card that comes close to fitting the criteria. Can only affect itself therefore not making it a combat trick.
>Katara
UW. This effect (or a localized one that only affects a single creature) is what I am talking about though.
>Leonardo da Vinci
Not infinitely scalable.
Please by all fucking means show me your 'plenty of precedent'.

It's more trivial. Everyone agrees she's the most book smart of the group. She basically turns her grades from A- to A. And it's not even to get a leg up, it's just to live up to the legacy of Teferi. Even though Teferi didn't exactly excel as an academic himself.

Blue doesn’t get pump spells you lying kike. It only gets small modifiers like 4/3 or such. This is literally a zero ceiling X pump spell that should’ve been green. You fucking zoomer kikes have been so groomed by JOTC and Kikewater that you literally don’t know any better. It’s no wonder you believe their kike lies about blue vigilance and now this shit. When they eventually give blue even more pie breaks you’ll also argue they were always true and suck their circumsized micro dicks even harder.
>>
>>97858122
It doesn't get pump spells yeah, if you ignore the 5/5 one. Or the 4/4 flying ones. Or the "creatures become X/X where X is the number of instant or sorcery cards in your grave" one (which is limitless increase btw). Or the creature that can freely change its own stats by paying X. Or the creature that can pay 4 mana to put 2 +1/+1 counters on itself indefinitely. Or the hybrid (which means it could be either color) mass pump effect.
Yeah. Totally. It's totally outside of blue's territory if you ignore all the cards it's gotten that cross over that territory for over a decade.

By definition, no. Card prices adjust to meet supply and the supply is set by businesses with the ability to open far more product than you and average out the variance. The result is that you're already 50% chance to do below average, the market is rising to meet you, and even if you do spike a card liquidating it is going to be difficult.

I feel like fantasy art typically features larger-than-life characters, but somehow there has recently developed art direction, likely from the executive level, for smalller-than-life characters. I see character designs and suddenly imagine an artist being told, over and over, "reel it in, we don't want anyone to look over the top." I have no idea that something like this is really happening, but I have no other way to describe the final product than "smaller-than-life"

I live star trek but it's a bad fit for mtg, having Picard or O'Brien on your board trying to kill your opponent just feel wrong, it's not what those show are about. Wotc should just get the licencing for 40k again, or Dune, or even star wars or one of the hundreds of universe about space wars.

I can't quite describe it. Looking over the visual spoiler of this set feels like a nightmare.
All the art is hyper-saturated and cluttered. Half of the characters are stuck in the smug arms-up Disney climax pose. The other half have one hand stuck out casting some spell. Barely any exceptions to those two categories.
All the effects just blur into a foggy mess of valueslop. There's no sense of stakes or human emotion. Everything depicted feels like aliens wearing skinsuits, trying to fit into a 90s American high school. Except, the aliens don't know the high school they're trying to fit into is really a movie set.
This shit is just weird, man. I don't know how to describe it. Looking over the SOS card pool truly feels like staring into the abyss. Some kind of deep, dark abyss of the soul, where human creativity goes to die.

https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/secrets-of-strixhaven-wi nnowing-season Yeah, Silverquill side-story.
>Pre-amble of a poem by Embrose about winnowing, which probably means nothing
>Killian has just sat through some sort of diplomatic tea ceremony, which went wrong, and now he has to do a duel
>He internally notes this is stupid, but it's ritual and it seems to have kept Arcavios at peace for hundreds of years, so he can't be too upset
>Killian specifically volunteered to replace the expected duelist, and he's up against the representative of the Pinzari Isles, a leonin
>There were no leonin in the delegation from the isles, but he's also a replacement so who cares
>The duel begins, and Killian is winning for a while, but thne notes his opponent seems kind of desperate to get a win in at some point, and gets a bit distracted over-thinking and loses to a sudden onslaught
>Next thing Killian knows, his opponent is helping him up and seems awkward about how easy that was
>He helps Killian to a bench, where a healer orc lady, named Verdis, gets to work, she's familiar to the leonin, whose name is Crownflower or just Crown as he prefers
>Verdis chides Killian and Crown both, Crown for going too hard and Killian for being too complimentary
>Killian recognises Crown now, he's a first year who just declared for Silverquill
>Crown asks why Killian let him win, and Killian basically says the duels don't actually mean anything, they're just for catharsis, and Killian's been there for three months and nobody's left a duel 'satisfied', best he can tell, because they lose and are upset, or win and get nothing
>He slides into a bit of a ramble about it seems like Arcavios is getting worse, people are holding on to grudges, nobody's letting things go anymore
>>
>>
>>
>>97860251
>There's a distant clamour that interrupts that, and Killian goes to check it out, while having a brief flashback to the Phyrexian invasion because he very nearly died during that, and nearly lost his friends and his father besides
>He gets to the clamour, and there's somebody who's just come through one of the Forum's portals
>The clamour is because two delegations from places at odds with each other, Silkmeadow and Kathorr, who met before the mediator arrived, who just arrived
>And hey, guess who the mediator is, it's dear old disappointed dad Embrose
>He and Killian share a look before Embrose goes to work, and Killian notes that his dad looked nervous, strangely enough
>Days pass, and Killian learns more about the nature of that whole conflict, and Crown and Verdis are from Silkmeadow and Kathorr respectively, of course, so he learns from them about their homes
>Specifically they're fighting over a pure refuge of an oasis that remained untainted despite Phyrexia's invasion fucking up the surrounding lands
>Crown says Silkmeadow has a silkworm strain in the oasis that they have a claim to, Verdis says Kathorr has a claim to the hill the oasis is under because it's where they ended up when their founding group was starving and nearly dead, apparently
>He asks how Crown and Verdis know each other, because given their homes are so at odds, they shouldn't have even MET, let alone become semi-friendly
>Verdis explains, awkwardly, that they were tutored together as kids, she fostered with his family for a bit, and he was SUPPOSED to come live with her clan for a bit, but then the invasion happened
>Later, Killian is having dinner with Embrose, who deflects and just goes "heard you lost a duel", which Killian admits to and Embrose just tries to be a bit nicer and tells him to not let it distract from his studies
>Killian brings up his worries that there might be a failure of diplomacy, for the first time in 700 years, but Embrose brushes that off
>>
>>97860314
>Killian then brings up that he's read his father's latest poem, and it gets a bit awkward before Killian decides to just discuss his thesis
>Later, he's at the hall where some ritual between the delegations called the Naming Tithe is about to go down, a ritual that's not been done for decades, mostly because it's really really boring
>The ritual begins with Embrose asking the youngest of the delegations, which are Crown and Verdis, of course, what they're known as, they give their names and connections to all sorts of things
>Then he asks what they know the other as, and they give... Sort of peaceful sounding remarks, drink some water
>And that seems to go alright, but there's more, because every member of the delegation has to do this, and as it gets to the older ones, the namings get harsher and more pointed
>Finally, the two heads of the delegations arrive to the ritual, but Embrose goes "Alright, fuck this" and calls the delegations out for being squabblingi infant bitches
>He basically says "fuck you both, you gotta just live with each other, or neither of you are getting that damn oasis"
>The ritual carries on after, and it seems a bit forced from then on, and everybody seems tense as hell
>After the ritual, he tries to talk to Embrose but can't really get much of a word in, and Embrose says it's on the delegation leaders now to prove themselves
>Killian leaves, and oh look there's Crown and Verdis, heading to the dueling stage, discussing having a binding duel of some sort
>Killian emerges and asks the terms to make it more official, and they basically go "Look, all the rituals aren't working, and a duel for satisfaction won't give anything, so there needs to be something FROM this duel"
>Indeed, the terms of their duel are not to satisfaction, but for the rights of the oasis
>And Killian gets a look in his face when he realises what's going to happen, because very likely they're gonna duel to the death here
>>
>>97860368
>He says he's not going to stop, just to bear witness, but asks to draw his own marks for the duel, which they agree to, and he modifies the terms just a bit
>He blends the terms of Verdis and Crown together, and adds in things about communion, sharing, etc.
>Crown and Verdis share a nervous look, then Killian declares the duel to start
>Next day, there's another duel going on, and it seems Killian's gambit has paid off because the delegations are much less tense because they seem to be enjoying using duels as some sort of resolution in and of themselves
>Embrose appears and goes "What the fuck did you do", moreso why it's going on without any real formal procedure or precedent and Killian shrugs and goes "Eh, I'll add it on to the Naming Tithe as an option, easier than making a new ritual"
>Embrose makes a sort of proud snort at that, and then awkwardly tries to tell his son how proud he is of him, but can't really do it because he's not very good at that
>Killian takes his father's hand and goes "Well, why not resolve it the way these guys are" and they go off to have their own duel

I'll be honest, that meta seems boring as hell. Not that it looks bad per say, it looks pretty decent enough in terms of variety, but all the decks are just stuff I've played several times before and landfall stuff. I dunno, I like meta where sets unique mechanics get to shine and all this stuff is just decks we've seen hundreds of times in standard metas before.

They are 'better' because even the biggest anime hater has to admit they represent authentic feudal japan aesthetics, right down to the women being in traditional garb and role
Wotc had their chance with capenna but naturally they have to insert their wahmens in there, they could never represent the 1920s as they truly were
