I think painting in subassemblies is easier when the models also aren’t cut up in weird pieces like modern GW sculpts.
I find skitarii easier to do in subassemblies but some of the necromunda models are horrible to paint whilst unassembled

About two weeks ago, an LGS near me had a painting competition but I haven't had time to repost the winners collage here until recently. Lots of nice models participated, the store owner had a harder time judging the vehicle/monster category.

I think I got a bad bottle of streaking grime. Instead of coming off in a soft gradient it's peeling off in big patches, and sometimes taking all my undercoating with it. I'm hoping it just gives me an extra weathered grungy look, but it's disappointing.

After yesterday's failure and frustration with fraying green stuff, today I tried making mock-up tentacles from aluminium cable. The challenge here is how to install 3 more tentacles and position them in a way that is against the base. Perhaps I need to fill the sockets at the "hip" of the model with green stuff and stick the cables there for more durability?

I thought the jetbike was better in person, there's a freehand design on the bonnet that's tidy. But of all the dreadnoughts entered, like four of them - I personally preferred the others, the judging criteria I'm not sure was disclosed. There was absolutely a mixed bag of people entering for the sake of it.
The next one coming up is for a diorama, which I guess is going to filter a lot more people.

People are only saying mean shit about the competition winners because it's a fucking competition, the kind of place you expect to see nicer models than those.
If someone posted any one of those models to the thread themselves, people would slobber over them. It's different when they're actual competition entries.

The dread went a bit too heavy on something like Reikland Fleshshade, it wouldn't be as bad if something else got the ivory back in and diminished the gloss. Characters were quite saturated with Captain and Chapter Master equivalents, but some SoS and Infinity models I thought were quite clean and I'm surprised they didn't get into the Top 3.

AK British Khaki, AP Wasteland Clay, AP Ancient Stone. Ochres and creams are your friends when painting yellow. AK Rubber Black and Reddish Grey make a nice dark but warm grey-brown. Can go brighter again with something like GW Rakarth Flesh/Scale 75 Rainy Grey.

If you want the bright yellow, lacquer paints would be your best bet ans coverage is a pain in the ass. Otherwise, use whatever you like on a pink primer or base coat and the result should be alright.
Theres shit like ionic high coverage yellow but I don’t think it looks as correct as a more saturated yellow like bad moons yellow.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>97873839
Which streaking grime did you use? They are usually dissolved in white spirits which can easily break down acrylic paint. It’s usually better to spray gloss varnish before applying it. Makes cleanup a lot easier, too.
Just remember the acrylic>enamel (or oils)>lacquer rule.
The varnish can be acrylic/PU based because it’s not a big deal if a bit of it dissolves. It still ought to protect the painting.
>>
>>
>>97874367
>which can easily break down acrylic paint
No, it can't.
>It’s usually better to spray gloss varnish before
It's a good practice, but it is not required (unless using AP paints, which tend to get absolutely blasted by white spirit and similar solvents). Generally speaking, satin will work just as fine.

Ok, I'm going to ask this again. Does this look to be a good reference photo for how light interacts with a sword blade? I'm mostly interested in how to paint the fuller since the flat of a blade is pretty straightforward.

>>
>>97873726
I can't imagine the competition was particularly stiff if that crone/witch thing with the scythe placed 3rd. It's so muddy and indistinct that I can hardly make out any detail on the model. Most of the others are reasonably good but mothing to write home about. Like another anon said, theirs a fair few around here that blow these out of the water.
Hell, other than the basing on the vehicles/monsters I don't think they're particularly great. That Khorne daemon that got second especially. Nothing about the actual painting stands out to me as being more than a basically competent paintjob. The base is easily the most impressive part of it. and the Dreadnought just looks plainly ridiculous. I like big mech parkour as much as the next guy, but that has way too much air to look even slightly realistic for its size.
>>
I give up.
Painting doesnt cause joy anymore.
I dont know what happened, but the very moment I pick up a brush and start painting I'm overcome with stress, anxiety, and self hatred for whatever minuscule mistake.
I fucking snapped the kolinsky brush out of retarded rage.

>>
>>97875198
Pure glass, tempered or not, is a bad choice.
You aren't swapping it for your coffee table, you're putting it against a wall or in a corner, only the front needs glass and that glass needs protective framing.
Detolf is strictly worse than an open-air bookshelf.
>>
>>97875204

Can you mix speed paints together? I've got a dark blue that's a little darker than I want. But I've also got a regular blue that's brighter than I want. Can you mix speed paint colors? Does that work? Or does the way speed paints are made make them not combine when mixed?

>so did you try it? feedback is welcome (all kinds)
I did! I can submit the feedback directly through the script, but for now:
Pros:
-- It saved me substantially on time - I'd say 40-50% time savings. Putting all the images together automatically so I can pick and choose cuts down significantly on the manual work. This is a big plus, especially late at night when I'm tired.
-- Having everything available all at once to reposition, resize, and rotate makes the actual "collage" part of my work a snap. While it might seem like it should be the opposite, It's actually much easier to keep a lid on than painstakingly moving around even only five or six images on different layers in paint.net.
-- Being able to throw out images we don't need (memes, reaction images, etc.) rapidly is bonus functionality that comes at negligible cost in terms of labour and time.
Cons:
-- The canvas size is fixed at 4000 x 4000. When I build collages manually, I actually start with a 12000 x 12000 blank. If that sounds huge, you wouldn't believe how quickly it fills up! What if there were a changeable default setting the user could set and save in the script?
-- I can't find a way to zoom in. Sometimes I'd like to get a close-up look to decide how to place what and where. As a workaround, I saved the "default" collage immediately and reopened that in paint.net so I could make better choices about how to arrange what I had to work with.
-- Bulleted lists should always have at least three bullets.
All in all, this is an incredibly useful tool for me. Are you the one I should be thanking for putting this together?

/our/ best yellow painter uses Golden high flow diarylide yellow through an airbrush. If you don't have an airbrush, you could prime white and brush it on like a contrast paint.
Imperial Fist contrast paint is the GW version, it's got that something special that makes it go on better than most yellow contrasts.

The colours aren't the issue, it's the way you've mismatched them, you've got two colors on each that appear on a single panel each, if you're going to defy the color wheel you need to distribute the colours more evenly to give them a feel of uniform prpriety instead of "I salvaged this one panel off another machine"

I put down the undercoat and the decals, then varnished with army painter gloss out of an airbrush, and then applied my streaking grime. I waited about half an hour before I came back with some q tips and a bottle of soilworks white spirits. It's always worked really nicely, but both of the tanks I did with this bottle of streaking grime had the same thing happen.

>I'm hoping I just got a bad batch and they didn't change the formulation
I have a bottle of an ancient SG and a completely new one right here, and they behave exactly the same.
>then varnished with army painter gloss
My guess is that this is the fucky part. A lot of AP shit just melts when it gets in contact with white spirit/enamels. You can google army painter + white spirit and you'll see the horror stories. I even did some testing some time ago, picrel. It's one of (many) reasons I don't use AP. Anyway, when I was testing it, it took down even a rattlecan AP primer, so I wouldn't be surprised that their varnishes are also an absolute bottom of the barrel dogshit (like nearly everything else they sell).

since it was posted I'll complain about the atrocious metal color naming again. some of these should legitimately be considered trolling.
>true brass looks like tin
>weapon bronze, brassy brass, balthazar gold all look like copper
>rusty brass when brass doesn't rust
even if you want to say "the people coming up with the names are marketing nerds who have no idea what bronze looks like" how could you not know what color a penny is or have never seen a brass candlestick or something before?

When you get sick of working on a particular piece of a model, do you power through it and try to just get it done to satisfaction or do you take a break and work on something else? I'm getting really tired of working on the armor and I'm not sure if I should do the face or just try to get it done.

I use the putty to sculp with anon. He is a conversion from the emperors champion pic relatedl; you can see all the limbs are changed and he has a different pose. Where you see the white putty (its actually milliput and not tamiya) is where I had to create shapes from scratch: his whole back right leg (which had to be cut out from the tabbard), his back torso plating, every one of the soft armour joints, the pauldron (the mkIII left pauldron started as the mkVII pauldron like the one on the right pauldron), the belt, and the foot, the thigh, the tabbard.

Paint things as if they were metallic.
Idk what kind of answer you want.
I just want some good quality metallic paints that cover decently well and thin well.
I used the old VGC metallic paints and it was quite an experience.
I also have a couple of Vallejo Metal color paints (which I love) but I find it lacking in colour variety, sorely lacking some golds among other thngs.

I think it's less details and junk for junk sake. The sculptors were painters and everything was made with intention, edges catch paint easier. Heroic scale was more exaggerated. Most importantly tho its nostalgia, painting mini's you used to drool over in white dwarf and army books
>>
>>97880201
simple form that evokes the actual shape, instead of direct details that must be painted correctly.
is that weird lump on the side of the scout marnie? the thing with all the little square? who knows, but if i paint the whole thing green its a grenade, if i paint it silver with red and green cubes, its a control panel, if i paint it yellow its a pineapple.
You fill in the gaps with your paint job, you are breathing life into a crude form and making it whole.
but really its just that they're chonky and theres less extra bits to paint.

They're also 8, so they don't have the greatest attention spans and patience, but they LOVE using their own painted miniatures on a grid to battle it out with my little painted enemies. That popsicle house is super cute and would be a great centerpiece for an encounter. Glad you are able to enjoy the hobby with your little ones, hopefully they pick up on wargaming or RPGs or whatever as well so you can enjoy gameplay with them too.

Thats the plastic traitor guard crowdfunding done by Wargames Atlantic in 2023.
Took them almost 3 years to deliver, and some people are still waiting, but it was so worth it in my opinion.
Its essentially complete traitor guard army, with several types of infantry, cavalry, artillery, support weapons, ogryns, beastmen and APCs.
I think i spend around 500€ back then, and it should add up to 500+ infantry and a variety of all the additional stuff, including 4 of the vehicles.
So i will be quite busy for a while.

Realistically, it is. Especially considering that i already had some traitor guard to beginn with. But TG is my hobby love since back in the day when the Lost&Damned were a thing, and that campaign just screamed "its made for you" into my face. Its the only time i ever backed a crowdfunding anything, and i dont regret it. The price was good, and this mountain of plastic has actually sparked my desire to build and paint like nothing had for the past 6 month, and this last week i was quite busy with building and priming.

I use a combination of AK wargame wash (enamel, thins with white spirits) over tamiya / alcohol acrylics. using white spirit thinner (I use a giant container of brush cleaner I got from a hardware store) it'll just reactivate the enamel, and if I use isopropyl 99% it'll reactivate both. so I use those 2 in conjunction with eachother.

The minis are pretty much the same scale as modern GW guard/humans and so far, my GW bits (and recast stuff) have fit on quite nicely, be it the Blooded KT or Cadians old and new.
Only the neck joints are a bit smaller, and not as deep, compared to the Cadians, but that is not a big issue i think.
They also match with Northstars Stargrave and Frostgrave plastics.
>Some WA stuff reacts badly to cement, which I find weird.
I never heard of this, and have not encountered any issues. I'm using tamiya glue if that matters. The plastic here is just regular plastic.
I also built some WGA Dark Age Irish some years ago, also without issues.

Its both. Sadly my putty and plastic stock are both white which makes telling them apart hard, but this should make it easier. In the lower left picture what you see is plastic, in the lower right portion the extra bit is putty. There is one more peice of plastic you cant see behind the putty where it overhangs the edge. I like to use plastic whenever I can because its often faster to glue and carve down then it is to sculpt, especially where you want defined clean edges. Also having a rigid framework to do the putty on is super important for not going crazy. The more surfaces you have to define the harder it is to get the putty how you want it cause when you work on one surface you distort the rest.

- pink areas: Gundam Lfrith pink-> pink ??? primary -> 1:2 pink ??? primary:fluorescent pink
- white areas: buff -> radome -> white
- 1~2 thin coats of turbo dork tin star for metallic areas
then wash everything with the enamel, let it dry for a bit & remove excess, and then finally rehighlight everything again.

Definitely in the 'painted bases' camp, those look nice.

You can (or, at least, I have), but you definitely wanna have a place to test it out on. And either remember or write down the mixture recipe for consistency (I count drops).

The original Heroquest dwarf was based on the White Dwarf (ironic) art, you can even see the red from the magazine cover background poorly keyed out. I stuck as true to the card art as possible for my painting project. He's literally a based black white dwarf.

First real contribution to this thread. I got a resin printer for Christmas and have been slowly getting more and more into the crafting side of the hobby. Finally finished painting and basing a Trench Crusade warband (New Antioch). Just black primer, dry brushed highlights and mid tones with grey and white paint, and then Army Painter speed paints for the colors. Used Vallejo texture paste and some other bits for the bases. Really fun, can't wait for my next project; Ultramarine Intercessors. Let me know what you think, and what you catch I can improve on.
