I fucking love that game to the point I put up with the barely okay solo mode, just to mess around with the systems more. You tell me, I tried playing this irl and after the first turn has passed, everyone is on their phone or they get off their chairs to do something else while they wait before we start resolving the battle phases. I wished there's a way to speed up the purchasing and decision making phase without relying a timer of some sorts. I could do a house rule just to simplify and speed them up. Nowadays, its hard to find players who are willing to do a second play through.

Boardgames generally are in a much more polished state when they come out, Idk if playtesting has become the norm (I don't believe so) or if it's as you say, iterating on each other. Modern bgs are missing the edges and roughness of the 90s german games, but that is only a bad thing in the sub 1% case where said german game turned out to be unique and good, lightning captured in a bottle. Nowadays you can just take any old hobby game off the shelf and be relatively sure it won't be broken, the rules are coherent and understandable and it'll be decent if rather same-y. This leads to a higher but unstatisfying standard. Like eg. Lopianos "Autobahn", which is a perfectly fine game and I had no interest in it anymore after 3 games. Not because it got boring or started showing its cracks, just because there are more better games out there I'd rather play. "Playable" isn't good enough anymore, and that is great. We like to bemoan the changes but forget how absolutely shit the majority of boardgames was just 20 years ago. Relatively, that hasn't changed much, but now we (rightfully) hunger for great games and dismiss "just good" ones. But I'm rambling again, tl;dr is that the rule of "only 5% of boardgames coming out are worth playing" hasn't changed, but the overall standard sure has. I'd much rather play generic euroslop than a broken, incoherent mess.

Nah, I think that's fair to calculate in engagement time. Lots of 30 euro videogames have no more than 20h in them, and that's if you play the whole thing. Boardgames offer very good value for money but by their nature as non ephemeral, there is a certain expectation that's hard to fulfil I guess. Buying a game for 60, playing it just 5 times with 4 and reselling it cheaply at 30 is a VERY good rate tbqh

I think a good game is something that if someone brings it out, you're always down to play it. Could be a week from now or 5 years from now.
I think good games are mostly subjective and are group dependent, though. I love Race for the Galaxy and will play it with anyone, new to experienced. I also love Hegemony but will only play it with certain types of players and only if we have a day to dedicate to it.

I mean you're kind of pointing out why I've tired of this hobby. The games are good. They're okay. They're mechanically sound. They endlessly rehash tried and true formulas. They're disposable. You enjoy opening it. You enjoy sharing it. You play it less than a dozen times and if you're lucky you can sell it. I never have. I gave all mine away. Nobody wants to pay for this cardboard here. I mean it's not that it's such a bad thing in general. I don't get to re-gift theater experiences to my nephews. The value is better than something like AAA video games, so it's hard to complain too much, right? In some sense we're a slower version of the app market. There was a boom cycle when you had things like Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies. Then there was the decade of crap and eventually people find the experiences worth having in the dumpster fire after the great enshittification. The short way of putting it is that I'm not okay with okay or good anymore. I know exactly what I want out of my games now. I do think the hobby is more about consuming the next new thing than it is about any real shared loved of rules or games. I do think the hobby is really wasteful. It's peak capitalism. I think we'll see a crash and then a new design movement at some point. Hopefully it will be a big DIY movement.

Diplomacy is everyone vs everyone. So there's more of a focus on subterfuge, even among players you're loosely aligned. War Room is team based so you can (and should if you want to win) talk through your plans, who goes first, etc. The only similarity is that you're writing them down and executing in the order you wrote.
I think War Room is closer to Axis & Allies with more focus on operations and better combat resolution.

Like every year, I like the ideas and potential of some games but when they actually come out, most are just run of the trash to ok-ish games.

That's true, but in the one game we played, after several turns people consolidated into blocs and the game was still slow as fuck.
If War Room has more mechanics and more interesting maneuvers I guess it's better by default, but Diplomacy and GoT (which is much better than Diplomacy) have me sceptical about hidden orders as a mechanic. It just takes so fucking long, especially when you start mindgaming each other.

I considered this point seriously but we would be leaving out the possibility that players just make incorrect choices because of human error. There are a lot of board games that have one correct solution but that doesn't stop players from playing poorly. Then you have games like Candyland, Snakes & Ladders, War, and various dice games that involve little choice. These are still considered to be board games even if they're poor ones. Sudoku would seem to involve a lot more choice in how you go about solving the board state. The fact that there is one solution doesn't mean that every player takes the same path. There are different techniques to solving. It also raises questions about puzzle-like games. There are many Chess positions where there is a single best move. On what turn does Chess cease being a game and only exist as a puzzle? Is a board game merely a collection of rules with some tokens and sometimes a board? Or is it something more meaningful than that? I suppose the whole category could be boiled down to, "It's a board game because we say it is." The Crew comes to mind. It's not even a board game, it's clearly a card game, but we include in the category as part of the hobby. Yet gives Sudoku number tokens and an actual board and some of us would argue it's not even a game much less a board game.

you can't really "solve" most board games like you'd solve a puzzle since if you think you have a solution the opponents can always stand in your way and your solution no longer is one. maybe for simple games like connect 4 this doesnt apply because the number of options is so limited, but in a game like Heat which is much more random and variable than Sudoku/Connect 4, the "best option" for every decision (from gear card draft to turn by turn options) is not just the statistically better overall, but one that can take advantage of what other players are doing as well, and calculating all the possible statistics and probabilities for them takes so much time it's practically impossible until we get like a 10^10x better quantum computer than what laboratories can manage so far.

I've played it a few times on TSS and really liked it, and I'm getting a pretty big set, but those house miniatures don't really appeal to me—they take up too much space and are bigger than the hexes. But everyone says it's a must-have. What do you think?

not him and i am bad at shilling, but La Famiglia is one of the best games I've ever played. Every match is tense, every action is tense, every victory you need to fight for, on the surface you think you can calculate everything and it's just another war game with eurogame elements (worker placement action blocking, money management), but then it throws all kinds of variability at you (Influence actions that you can do instead of normal actions for higher cost but it fucks up the action selection order for opponents, Order tokens which you place facedown on the map and are both how you get more resources and soldiers than the action board allows AND attack into oppoennt territory, and Finesse combat which is the pinnacle of bluffing minigames) and at that point you realize that you should stop thinking and play by feel, but also dont stop thinking and have a plan, but also also hide the plan and pretend your plan is something else entirely but dont sell it too hard or they'll catch you bluffing, it's a mess and i love it.
as for table space, it's not that much of a hog, comparable to approx. 1.3 Catans or 0.4 TI4s, all fits on one family-size kitchen table and you dont even need to move the salt shaker.

About 3~3.5 hours if the players think for too long and the game goes to final round, sometimes early wins can push it down to like 2:40 territory. The cooperation on one hand feels implied, you're from different families and not allowed to share spaces or troops, and only one of you needs to control 2 areas of the 3 area regions to score control (so you and friend controlling one area each doesnt count as your team controlling the region), but at the same time you share the victory conditions (control 6 regions split between the team, or 5 regions by one player of the team so the other can turn into a car bomb goblin) and decide how to divvy up the power tiles (controlling regions gives your team powerups but if you control three regions and your friend none, you can give all the power to the friend if you choose to) and can send each other money (at the cost of a 100% tax on wire transfers, so pay 2 coin friend receives 1, but it's still a better deal than sacrificing your limited number of order tokens for 1 coin each), so i dunno, there's something to the game i don't know the words for, but it's a good something..

I'm not as extremely high on la famiglia as >>97887560 because it does have its flaws, but it is a very good and unique game. The worker placement part is extremely tight and you are constantly choked for money, and how it interacts with the map play is absolutely brilliant. It does tend to go long, which for me is the biggest problem, but only because you WILL want to keep planning and planning and reacting. Most of our games clocked at 3 1/2 h and I didn't see much reduction once we got the hang of the games flow as you only then start to REALLY plan. Additionally, the families aren't that balanced. I'd say yellow and especially blue are better than red/green. But that is a minor quibble compared to how awesome the game is. There also is an expansion in the works from what I've seen.

a lot of it depends on your playercount. Riverfolk adds two good factions for high playercounts and the ability to run a second vagabond, which is pretty much essential if you're aiming to play with 6 players. Marauders adds two militant factions that give you more variety at low playercounts, and hirelings which do the same. Underworld adds two maps, landmarks which can add a bit to the game but not much, and two factions (one insanely strong and one middling but fun)

Forgot about GoA II. It's cool in a similar but very different way; in la famiglia, every turn climaxes in the action resolution phase, correctly guessing opponents plans and successfully counteracting/preventing them is so great, and GoA turns that up to 11 and into a magic trick. You don't talk, you look at the board, see what you and your opponent might do, and you wordlessly coordinate. It's magic when it works, which it doesn't always. I've seen it also fall relatively flat BUT it's also far quicker. The biggest problem is that expanding the roster of heros is really expensive because fuck wolffdesigna

what i really like about root is that it lends itself very well to light roleplay. you have all these different factions that have so much character, that also translates into how they are played and it just makes it easier for people to engage in lighthearted banter that correspends with what is happening on the board.

I find this angle strange. I actually think the opposite, that even faggots that exploit consumer biases and trends like CMON or Monolith actually at their core want to make good games. There isn't really much money in hobby boardgaming, and yet so many people are very passionate about it, from publisher to designer to consumer. The vast majority of designers aren't even in it full time. I don't want to pretend there isn't any talmudic influences casti g their shadows over the hobby, but I don't think it's anywhere near peak consumerism/capitalism

Oh it is. I went from playing everything Friday to Sunday, sometimes Monday for decades. Then 3 critical things happened and my group fell completely apart. We had JUST started getting into board games and it was going amazingly. We probably played 90% of everything mentioned here regularly. Losing that was tough. My group lives ameritrash but we had started getting into euros too. I got probably 9 years of ameritrash with two of those being euros and then kaput, nothing. In a game about armies of individually weak replaceable units and escalating logistical nightmares, the Vagabond is a one meeple army whose logistics start off easy and get easier the longer the game goes on. Plus the ability to hide in the inaccesdible parts of the map makes him a hard to interact with faction. However, he is limited by the Item system, so in theory two Vagabonds or one VB and one Lord of the Hundreds (the only other faction that gives a shit about items beyond crafting them for VP) could make the Vagabond lategame less explosive, but I haven't played enough Root to confirm this because the rest of the game bores me.

Any anons into the Leader game series? I recently bought TAL and played 3 campaigns so far. While I enjoy the gameplay immensely I really dislike the thematic. Some ppl on BGG say that it is by far the best Leader game though, I personally would gel with the thematic of Eagle/Fulcrum Leader way more but heard that those are pretty barebones/lack the tactical depth of TAL.

For what it's worth, I never had much money and I did have my episodes of "man I don't feel like boardgames give me much joy anymore" but those only ever lasted a month or two.
As a further aside, I do not get why boardgaming is considered an expensive hobby. I've complained about price hikes before, and I believe rightfully so, but the hobby is comperatively dirt cheap. Even as a poorfag, you buy, play, and if the game isn't great or stellar you sell it for 50% off. You've likely had a collective 10-20h of entertainment for like €40 which is not a bad rate at all, and it scales up to infinity when you actually like the game.

It's not super expensive factoring in time spent vs money spent. Yeah, it's literally you're paying pennies per hour for entertainment vs other forms of entertainment, yes. That's if you get to actually play. I can watch movies and play vidya solo. I could play BGs solo but it really loses the element I enjoy most about BGs when I play that way: social activity. Galaxy Trucker is the other. In both you have a real time phase (in Space Alert players react to new info about the enemies, plan ship management, and play cards on their action programming boards, in Galaxy Trucker you build a space ship out of squares with one hand only and some Pipe Puzzle style restrictions on whereyou can attach new modules) with hidden/limited information (cards played face down and threats unknown at mission start, modules start face down in the middle pile) and after the time limit on the phase is over (though in GT the time limit is more like a guaranteed grace period, and the actual end is when one player declares they're done and starts the final countdown) play proceeds to a turn based resolution (programmed actions vs autoplay enemies in Space Alert, a convoy of ships vs the random hazards of the Space Event Deck in Galaxy Trucker)
I like both and they're both radically different games but its still funny how they can be boiled down to a similar core concept.
As for why are they in the same universe, just look at the Sitting Duck and all the galaxy trucker modules, it's nearly 1 to 1 design, with the purple donut stack laser cannons, green energy and shield modules, ways of dealing with internal threats, and the fact that damaged crew modules are just detached, sealed, and jettisonned (though on the Sitting Duck it has less favorable endings for the crew than on a pipe truck). Or they could just be reusing assets because lazy design team, who knows.

But why board games instead of something else is marginally more interesting. I spent a decade playing vidya with friends, shit like L4D, LoL, DotA2, BF3, but eventually I grew out of all of that. They still do, I just stopped playing online completely. It just gets too grindy all consuming.
Board games, on the other hand, is something that serves as a structured, limited, occasional thing. It's both more laid back and more exciting, and I have really come to appreciate the fact that it's a bit of a cornerstone in my friend group. Play a game, talk some shit, play some more, see you next week. I feel sorry for the sad sacks who don't get to experience this.

That's something I also noticed halfway through my first game and informed play from then on. If you really >need to go first, it becomes a tight balance between tipping your hand too soon and giving someone time to play a card after you(though they usually have to pair it with the appropriate action), or losing your chance and seeing someone else claim the first player token through the board action. when i got into board games i was also taking a break from drinking alcohol and in a way i also see it as this thing that facilitates positive social interactions sort of like drugs or other things do, without taking drugs. that is not to say i am still sober, i do drink again from time to time, but now i also play board games.

The only engine builder I would buy again is Dominion. I feel like a lot of modern board games are Frankengames. So personally I would be more inclined to rank a game higher if it did one thing well instead of three things poorly. Five Tribes comes to mind immediately. I absolutely despise the bidding mechanic in that game. The game without bidding is one of my favorite game designs.

with videogames it really depends for me. recently i more or less stopped playing video games, but over the years as far as shooters go for example stuff like call of duty was just too stressy for me. squad i really enjoyed because it's much more about communication and supporting your team, there are a lot of times where there isn't much happening and then all of a sudden it shifts and it's just complete insanity. still less stressy then the constantly running, shooting and respawning of other games. i really enjoyed Cairn recently and cyberpunk and inscryption. magnum opus from zachtronics i also played a while ago. it's also really nice. portal 2 is also still one of my absolute favourite games, i still dont know how they managed to make portal 1 but better in every aspect.
me and my roommate don't have many board games, but as mentioned above compile works really well for us. duel for middle earth is also pretty fun, but almost too much luck based. arcs and root we enjoyed also very much, but for root we want to replace the vagabond and marquis the cat soon. and then i also have a list of games that i want to get in the future like magical athlete, dune imperium uprising, heat, pandemic legacy, eternal decks, arkham horror. pretty basic list, i guess, we are still trying to figure out what we like and what works for us. we also tried out brass twice but that we did not enjoy, so i guess eurogames are something i will skip for the foreseeable future

No mostly because it makes for dull repeat plays. If you took the drafting out of It's a Wonderful World, the only "game" part of it would be sequencing your cards appropriately. It'd be pure engine building but wouldn't be fun. I can't think of a single game that relies on pure mechanic (deckbuilding, drafting, roll-and-move, area-control, etc) that isn't cooked after a couple plays.

I finally won a game of wingspan against my gf. We play a lot of boardgames against each other and usually it is pretty equal or, with obsession for example, I tend to reel in more wins. But after 8 games of continuously losing I finally managed to win a game, this game still feels surreal to me and I just can't get it to click with me. Eh, a win is a win.

I had something typed but the wait time before posting annoyed me too much at the time. TTRPGs already let you do your monster fucking thing, but I understand the desire to make a dedicated product with retarded shit like cum markers and a belly inflation meter to indicate how close it is to bursting. To me, it would have absurdist comedic value, but it would be too disgusting to actually buy and play. I'd love to see it though because it's just so ridiculous, and from a sociological standpoint I'd be interested if the target audience of porn addicted women would actually play a game about it (outside of Baldur's Gate 3 and TTRPGs), or if that is more of a guy thing. Women need a strong narrative to get off, so make sure you put in that extra work on theming and also commission someone who can draw in a way that appeals to them.

I wonder, how do producers calculate the amount of point tokens they'll need to produce?
Certainly they care most about cost but they need to know how many denominations will be required for players to never run out. For example, Scout comes with 23 point tokens and you'll really ever run out during a round (though I've seen it happen), sure, they could have printed 2 or 3 more and be fine but that most likely increases the cost overall.

As I grow older and my cognitive capacity decreases compared to 10 years ago (or rather, competing at the same level is more taxing than it used to be) I've come to move from almost purely deterministic games to games with a bit more randomness in them.
