>Tau edition
Question for all the blueberries ITT: How do you feel about the more cynical portrayals of the Tau like in Fire Caste? It's less insufferable than the stereotypes but I wonder if it's more "Tau for people who don't like Tau" or just more nuanced.
>>97883603
I like how stark the colors are, very retraux.
Are you airbrushing at point blank? Very flat coats with just a suggestion of overspray. If not, what paint is that?

How do I get over doing like 3 layers of highlights on a basic battleline legionary or guardsmen?
It really hinders me from getting stuff done but I feel like I’m making a hamburger without any lettuce or tomato on a untoasted bun.
It’s something I’m struggling with so I’m curious about how you anons found your sweet spot in army painting.

I love Fire Caste. Its the exact sort of portrayal of Tau that I love.
For me the perfect example of that sort of Tau is encapsulated in using Gue'vesa as Breachers, and Breachers only.
I love the sort of Subtle evil that the Tau can be. Especially with Ethereal's.
That said, I also like the super optimistic tau, but for that I like to think that Farsight enclaves work best.

I'm using Tamiya Extra Thin Cement for assembly and I got 2 questions, when trying to hold to pieces together, do I put heavy pressure on it or just gold it lightly?
And when trying to let go of a piece gently after placing it on a body, my finger gets sticky. How do I prevent this?
>>
>>
>>
>>97883647
For chaff you are 100% justified in drybrushing instead of layering up. If you look at the old painting guides it was standard operating procedure for the grogs, and if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me.
You will want to learn how to drybrush well though, if it's all streaky you'll be convinced it's no good.
>>
>>97883679
>pressure
Hold it firmly in place, apply some pressur, not enough that you damage the model obviously, but don't just like it sit lightly on there either

It's a mess but it's starting to come together
>>
>>
>>97883679
If your finger is getting sticky then you're letting the cement get where it shouldn't be by either applying too much or applying it sloppily. It can be tricky to avoid this if you're doing a seam weld since in that case you deliberately apply excess cement so it squeezes out the top and it can be tricky to avoid making a mess, but if you're just attaching an arm or a leg or something it probably just means you're applying too much and making it overflow/run.

>"the other vanilla marines".
Are Imperial Fists really what most SM homebrewers default to when they don't want their guys to be Ultramarines due to how Ultramarines are the corporate posterboy?
>If yes
Does this mean that making one's successor an Ultramarines successor chapter is more original than an Imperial Fists successor?

WTF happend to Codexes/Codecies? I've been out of the hobby for a while and I'm trying to get my kid into it and he like the Tyranids and there is almost no lore in the Codex. How the fuck is he supposed to like the units or the army? There isnt even fucking pictures of the models. WTF are they doing here? I started at 2nd ed and they had great lore for each unit/model and made me fall in love with them. WTF is going on?
>>
>>97883872
>>97883895
This shit right here is what my 2nd ed codex had in it, lots of it.
>>
>>97883888
That along with every narrative campaign book are "while stocks last" meaning they won't be restocked. Your best bet is finding one at your local game/hobby shop. 500 Worlds I've noticed isn't too hard to find even online. Others like Maelstrom will be much harder to find.
>>
>>
>>97883895
Yeah, codex quality has dropped immensely since about 8th edition. Less narrative snippets, smaller gallery sections, fewer conversions and painting guides, and less cool evocative art replaced by digital renditions of models reproduced exactly or low quality portraits.
>>
>>97883888
>>97883904
I got 500 worlds today. Is there no digital copy for the book? I cant find one like I do in the Codexes.

As someone subbed to the Combat Patrol magazine currently (58 issues in) I can raise the same sentiments as the other people who replied to you
>Do you like the armies?
If you like like at least 6/9 of them or have a friend you'd be up to splitting it with, then yeah it's a good deal. For me it was
>Already collected Imperial Guard & World Eaters
>Wanted to start Marines, CSM, and Orks
>Had no interest at first but now have a full 2000+ points in Eldar along with a Titan I'm gonna be working on this summer.
>Selling the Votann stuff to a Friend
>Not totally sure what I wanna do with the Tyranid/GSC stuff yet.
If you only really want 2-3 of the armies then it's not really worth it.
>Is it good for a new player?
The magazine contents are very good at this part, It's primarily coded around the Combat Patrol game mode but it does provide the basic contents of the core rules included in later issues too. It won't be a 1/1 jump into true 40k though (Ignoring that 11th edition is gonna be out in 2-3 months the Eldar Combat Patrol still uses Fate Dice for its army rule).
IMO I feel like it's been worth it, I've gotten some pretty nice models out of it and it's nice getting a new drop of issues every 4 weeks.

>>

Huron's update was first availble in the Maelstrom campaign book. The datasheet should be available to you in the app if you already own Codex: Chaos Space Marines. If you do not own the codex, that is what you will need.

>>
>>97883941
Give them bondsman with OC2 and reduce the OC on KNIGHTS down a bit and take away their special action rules so people have to actually use infantry alongside the mechs.
Also give them more brackets so they're no always fighting at full power and combat effectiveness even when more than half their wounds are gone.

Yes but it needs to be built into the army and codex as the default and not a grotmas free soup detachment they may not even keep going forward.

That is correct. It's not all doom and gloom though. You still have the Crucible of Champions rules that will likely never see a digital release. Personally I am envious of you since I was never able to secure my own copy.

I probably should specify that when I say "Detachment" I mean picking your desired detachment to access the list builder. If you do not have WH+ and do not want to delete your existing list you can also find the datasheet via
Warhammer Community > Downloads > Warhammer 40,000 > Faction Packs > Faction Pack: Chaos Space Marines
I hope this helps.

What I like to do is have a small amount come out the joint seam, wipe up excess with my finger or toothpick, then smooth out any final affected exposed area with my hobby knife. I know this isn’t the best way to do it, but until you get a rhythm for how much you need per model, it’s better than nothing. Usually I don’t have any excess that ruins visible areas, but it happens from time to time.
>>97883768

They ARE really interesting, you probably just haven't read through one of their more recent codexes to see all the cool flavors of them. They are very much a "your dudes" type of faction, they won't interest people who want a pre written narrative for them like certain more poster boy factions.
>>
>>
>>97883936
It's in the Maelstrom Army Book or alternatively free online via the Chaos Space Marine faction pack.
If you are wondering where extra rules are collected for 10th (and soon to be 11th) the answer is always the faction pack.

I dont recall if it was Fantasy or 40k where you randomly drew your psychic powers... I'm pretty sure that Fantasy did around 4th ed... I think 40k had 1/2/3 pts per power and you could choose a power based on the amassed points you had per your psychicers mastery points. That sounds right. Good times.

Eldar wrist connections are always a PITA to glue, tiny connectors that never hold unless you sit there for about 10 minutes.
Watch out on warp spiders, they're one of the most annoying kits I've put together, the guns are attached at 4 points and fitting it all is a nightmare
>>
>>
>>97884996
Ynnari play more like craftworlds with some dark eldar allies than dark eldar anyway, so not really?
Harlequins aren't really OP they're incredibly glass cannon and die to marines farting at them if they can't get into melee.
Corsairs only have a couple of units, the basic infantry is basically just storm guardians 2.0, whilst the jetpack infantry are chaff melee jetpacks. The starfang is a scoutier, lighter vyper with assault weapons. Overall I'd say their main thing is being cheaper and more chaff than craftworld units.

I'm new to the tabletop game, and I'm wondering how hard is it to get into the game? Is the community pretty bad? Am I gonna get bullied for unpainted miniatures or 3D printed miniatures? I really love the video games and lore and have minis I just never actually played or know what the community is like at game stores. Are there pretty bad LGS goblins?
>>
>>
>>97885238
Everything you read online is an exageration and under a microscope.
If you have a lgs near go and see what it's like, a lot run building and painting tutorials so you could try that as well.
tldr: touch grass
>>
>>97885238
Nobody gives a fuck about 3d printed minis unless they look like shit or you're trying to pass them off as originals. I give a pass on unpainted as long as I can see that you're consistently showing up week to week with a little more work being done. If your shit is still grey a year later I will bully you.

Finally got around to painting up the little hologram table thing I made forever ago out of a juice cap, some spare bits and spackle. I think I can probably do better, so I might go back tomorrow night and try sprucing up the glow around the edges of the table but for now it's good. Next time I make one of these I'm definitely gonna add more greebles to the table itself - I kept it intentionally bland for this one to not distract from the hologram on top but it definitely needs some thick chunky cables or something to go on it.
>>
>>
>>97885284
You can always strip a model and start over again, though you should absolutely keep your first painted model as-is to remind yourself how far you've come. You're never gonna be good at a new skill when you start it, but you'll be surprised at how far you can go if you put in the time and effort. Also, it's never been easier to start painting minis than right now. There's new guides being put out pretty much daily on places like youtube to learn from.

How do I stop losing with elf armies? When I play aggressively I lose half my army turn 2 and don't get anything for it and when I play defensively I just lose the whole board and get boxed in and killed. I've played over 100 games now and I just don't understand what I am doing wrong. I just want to play an army that can win by actually killing things and not have to play space marines.

>Why does GW absolutely hate Eldar in lore but will always be the strongest army on the table?
BL writers seethe about playing against Eldar and reflect that in their writing. An army's gimmick being movement, positioning and specialised units turns out to be quite difficult to balance in a game about movement and positioning where generalisation is often a waste of points.Hard to balance goes both ways, though - Eldar currently have one of the lowest winrates of any army and will likely ride out the edition towards the bottom of the pack.
>>
>>
>>
>>97885614
They have been at several points -Wraithknights at the start of the edition, Ynnari after the Codex and to a lesser but still real extent Aspect Hosts some time after that, but the nerfs were always forthcoming (Wraithknights and Ynnari were both rendered completely unplayable by theirs) and the latest set of balance changes left Eldar costed as if their units were durable without the ability to jump back into transports that justified that price, so it's a list of fragile, inefficient units.

A marine on a normal creature makes no sense because the creature has to be:
1. As armored as the marine himself, otherwise it gets shot first and your "cavalry" is now forced to schlep towards the enemy on foot.
2. At least as fast as the marine himself, otherwise the mount provides no strategic utility.
3. Extremely good at combat because against the kinds of enemies marines face, a non-combat proficient mount will be basically single-use.
Daemon engines check all three, thus they make sense.
>>
>>
>>97885847
I’m gonna be real, marines on mounts are already retarded. I can tolerate scout marines on bikes, but full on marines? This isn’t fucking Star Wars, you’re a 600 pound lard ass with a bolter that weights as much as your cock would be if it wasn’t cut off. And seeing a marine man a turret is just a visual humiliation ritual when it’s on a speed flying thing. Even more on a Mario cart.

>owner tells me that defilers will be cheaper on 2nd drop by like 1/3rd
I don't think this has ever happened. GW do not lower prices on a product. They occasionally repackage an item that leads to a technically lower price (former killteam boxes being sold regular units for cheaper without the killteam token tax, or 30k kits that were sold as 10 man units being reboxed as 20 man units that are technically cheaper per model). But just lowering the price is unprecedented.
Far more likely that the owner is either confused or lying.

I'm telling you that if GW writes the aeldari as perpetual failures and losers, then liking them requires liking that writing for them. If you don't like it, then you don't like them as a faction, you like your headcanon and you're coping about how much you actually despise the faction.

I havent played 40k since 4th edition and I'm getting back into it. My local store only plays 1000 point games. Any tips for a fun Adeptus Sororitas list for this?
This is what I've come up with so far: https://www.newrecruit.eu/app/list/vxRoY
A friend gave me a ton of models so here's what I've got available to work with (and still build)
Morvenn Vahl,
4x Battle Sisters Squad boxes,
2x Penitent ENgines boxes
2x Repentia Squads
1x Sororitas Rhino,
1x Sister Dogmata
2x Canoness,
1x Novitiates Kill team
1x new Combat patrol (the arco flagellants, sacresants, canoness and sisters are assembled to the combat patrol wargear)
With the list I built there I'd only need to get Celestine. I figure with no supporting Paragon warsuits there's no reason to run the Morvenn Vahl. Celestine is better solo but I dont have any Sera/Zephyrim to run with her so still not that great but she's much more fun than just a random canoness being warlord. I could drop her and take another Canoness and a battle sisters squad I suppose. Any thoughts or can someone help me whip something up with these models that'll be fun for a new player?

Your argument fails because the modern writing for aeldari has remained the same for most of 40k's history. They've never been important, they've never been winners, and they've never done anyrhing significant besides help the Imperium occassionally.
To make an equivalent to your argument, you would have read the first half of The Fellowship of the Ring, disliked the rest of Middle Earth, then made up a headcanon version which you then use to claim you are a fan of LotR.
You're going through obscene mental gymnastics to claim you're a fan of a faction you're not really a fan of.

I need one more major heraldry element, right now I have demonic murals, red/white checkers, and the house heraldry (toads), but that leaves me one major part of the pattern undecided.
it needs to be fairly light and less illustrative for the compoition to look nice. should I go with

2.orange firey chaos like in that blanche painting of the ship coming out of the warp

Showcasing a range of good, midrange and shit paintjobs is one of GW's marketing strengths, honestly. If you go looking for painted examples of small games, you'll likely find one or two professional tier paintjobs and maybe one slopjob if you're lucky so it's hard to be inspired if you're not a competition winning painter.

A little magic and psychic fuckery in the setting isn’t an issue for me, I should have been more clear. weathering and mudcore are not synonyms. It is the easiest way to convey a model is meant to be a scale representation of a bigger thing, adds lots of texture, and looks nice. If you're a very skilled painter, clean and toyetic can also look good, but you have to be a much better painter to make unweathered look as good as weathered if we're talking in the intermediate+ skill level category.

Around maybe 20 years ago GW had a small line specifically for "oddities"; mini dioramas and other peculiar models, picrel. I forgot the name of it.
I think the diorama scene has been very much neglected, which makes sense since only true autists would spend days assembling small scenes/skits. Warhammer has skewed too far from its train autist brethren.
Truth be told those logistics models could still see use as either terrain or for scenarios/objectives.

Specifically for their Orcs I am not a fan of the proportions most of the time, they are off base for Orks, too lanky and long in leg, the mechanical elements are overly chunkified, and in their efforts to make sure their sculpts were legally distinct from Orks, they made them all 4 fingered.

>We don't have the actual lore yet
we kinda do
https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/z9key2tp/lore-where -has-commissar-yarrick-been-lately/
>A titanic headbutt landed, painting the Beast’s face with a plume of crimson. He smashed Yarrick to the ground and raised an ironclad boot, ready to pulp his greatest enemy once and for all, before stopping with a wicked grin. Victorious once again, he withdrew as the planet bucked in its death throes.
>Amidst the chaos and scattering Imperial forces, no one saw the black-armoured form of a Fenrisian priest spirit away what remained of the legendary Commissar.
>His fleeing forces reported his death, and in time, the Bell of Lost Souls rang out on Terra. But against all the odds, the Old Man of Armageddon had survived. Yarrick lay in the medical bays of a Space Wolves strike cruiser. Though he escaped death once more, he would never be the same – his reconstructed skull forever aching, his broken limbs supported by a cybernetic armature, and his skin unnaturally pallid even for his advanced age.
tl;dr on the verge of death but Ghazghkull didn't crush him when he had the chance because ??? and Space Wolves took him to their medical bay.
No magic stated to be involved in his healing yet, though the Fenrisian priest certainly could perform such an action, the campaign book might expand on it.

Here's another version I was thinking:
https://www.newrecruit.eu/app/list/v5xlu
-Saint Celestine attached to:
- Zephyrim Squad (x5)
-Canoness w/ Power Weapon, Plasma Pistol, Rod of Office attached to:
-Dominion Squad (x10) w/ Simulacrum and 4 Meltagun
- Battle Sisters Squad (x10) w/ simulacrum, Heavy flamer, regular flamer
- Sisters Novitiate Squad (x10) with 2x Flamer, 1 Banner, 1 Simulacrum
- 2x Penitent Engines with Twin Penitent Buzz Blades
- 1x Rhino carrying:
- Repentia Squad (x10)
Comes to 1000 even. Repentia in rhino for fast movement, Zeph/Celestine for additional heavy melee presence. Penitent Engines for more fast response. Dominion w/ Canoness for heavy rerolling damage and objective holding, Battle sisters/Novitiate for general "where needed" OC. novitiate can also screen

While Ghaz not stomping him flat is dumb since he’s supposedly got a vision of galactic conquest and not just squabbling over Armageddon forever, Yarrick being revived by astartes-tier surgery and cybernetics is much more palatable than the “uh ummm magic?” mulligan I thought it was, assuming this is the way it goes in the book.
>>

>>
>>97886543
Because they're all imperium or necron shit.
Plus they're static and not very customisable. Sure you can always kitbash, but it would be nice to have objective markers for each army, like ork loot piles, or tyranid biomass clutches.
>>
>>
>>
>>97886535
Thats a big part of what I mean, color choice is a skill in itself and one many hobbyists are offensively bad at. Not only are they slopping on contrast paints but they're picking disgusting pallettes.
An army that's
>reasonable neatly painted
>has some actual layering and effort put in
>has a decent color scheme
mogs most armies at your typical lgs because they fail damatically in at least one of those categories.

the problem isn't that they're imp or necron. It's that they are boring. They are clearly glorified tokens, they scream at you that they're objective markers, and yet they fail at the basic premise of an objective: making sense.
These are the very definition of "gubbins".

Yarrick being on the verge of death but being revived is also one of his Things since the start(White Dwarf 152 pages 16-17), so I wouldn't be surprised if they are trying to repeat that with this recent lore tidbit.
