Why aren't you making retarded fan films in the woods behind your house anon?

This might be kinda random but a RE7 thread on /v/ just made me think about this recently but anybody tired of poor writing and characters being retarded just for the sake of the plot? It's present in every genre but it's super prevalent in horror though and I believe the whole "but then there would be no story/movie" shtick is a piss poor copout. The Thing is a perfect example of good writing. These people were researchers/scientists and for the most part acted like it. As the story advances they come up with more and more ways to try and figure out who the monster is and how to defeat it. At no point do you have to force a character to go full fucking retard just for the sake of we don't know where to go from here.

You have to realize that most horror movies are just made for basic entertainment. A good story and smart characters is not a necessity for the genre. If that's what you need in a movie, then most horror movies are just not for you.

Sometimes there's so many holes to plug that the director will visually struggle to put them all in the film. And the audience will go, "that's dumb just do X" even though there's a reason they can't. You basically only have a movie if the characters are constantly in strife, and our brains are constantly trying to get them out of it, that's part of the thrill.
Also often they only have a few weeks to shoot, and at that point the small details all come out. Like weapons they pick up in the script don't fully make sense in the set. Or the struggle to get away from a villain will be a bit forced because of the shape of a ladder.
Not sure if you have any examples.

What can you possibly find "entertaining" about a movie that fails in the basic requirements to be considered a good movie? It's true, "most horror movies" aren't for me, because I'm not a fucking retard who wastes his own time watching poorly written garbage with bad characters. I think it's actually a problem that people are getting paid a living wage to make bad movies, these people should be homeless and starving for their failures.

Anyone else ever see this? Just finished it, cinematography, costume design, and set design is astounding but Polish people screaming existentialist bullshit into the camera is hard to deal with for almost three hours.

Just finished. Paul Naschy wanders around ye old time Spain with his manservant doing whatever he feels like, which is mostly robbing every man he bumps into and fucking every woman. Kind of has an early Marquis de Sade vibe to it. In the end he reveals he's actually the devil and realizes humans are even worse than he is. Really nothing to it, not worth watching.

>poorly written
>bad characters
no offense but maybe it isn't. I mean I enjoy those things, and they are requirements for a *great* film, but the visceral, aesthetic, physical, threatening etc. aspect of horror films exists without them.
>>
>>217730931
I mean I just gave an example of a writers making smart characters though. It's definitely possible.
>>217730956
I love horror movies but that's just a piss poor excuse man. And I'm not saying the characters have to be smart...I'm just saying you don't have to make the characters full blown fucking retards. For example: Pluribus. Now I do understand it isn't horror but still. The beginning they're experimenting on rats and this scientist removes her glove, to check and see if the rat is dead, and gets bit by said rat. On what planet would a fucking scientist do that shit? Her partner sees this shit, and says he's going to initiate some protocol, containment, etc etc. She starts flipping the fuck out and instead of just closing and containing this shit so there isn't an outbreak, he immediately grabs her and tries removing her from the room to "save her". These are supposed to be the world's brightest people. This isn't Joe Schmoe and Chuck Fuck...these are government scientists and yet the writer's have them go full blown fucking retard just to advance the plot. I get it's a movie/tv show and you're supposed to shut your brain off and enjoy but at some point it just gets a bit ridiculous.
There is even more brain dead shit that takes place later like when the main character sees her friend frozen in place and freaking out. Then she goes into the bar and sees everyone doing the same. At this point the MC doesn't know whats going on. Could it be something in the air? Could it be something in the bar? She's just running around touching and shaking and falling all over everyone instead of fucking off. But she's just a normal person so I guess I can accept her being retarded but the scientists literally doing the exact opposite of everything they're trained to do in the event of an exposure is just ridiculous. It's like when the teens in a horror movie decide that they're gonna take on the monster themselves instead of going to the fucking cops or adults.

>What can you possibly find "entertaining" about a movie that fails in the basic requirements to be considered a good movie?
"Good movie" suggests a kind of artistic objectivity. Entertainment is separate from that, and the standards are subjective. Most comedies aren't "good movies" but their goal is just to make you laugh. Action flicks use stock characters and situations, but their gunfights and explosions still thrill you, which is what you watch them for. Pornography has no goal other than to be sexy. Horror movies offer a fantasy experience, something interesting to look at, some sense of fright or dread, and that matters more for the genre than conventional standards of good storytelling.

But at the same time, you can, and that's perfectly fine when it's not central to the purpose of your movie. It's not central to the purpose of most horror movies.

Yeah, it's a trip. One of my favorite films. When you think about it, no film has ever tried to do what this film does. It shows the creation of an entire civilization. Men and women of science, when cut off from civilization, lose their fucking minds and become shamen and cultists. It has some truly haunting moments, and the fact that it's all in Polish adds another level of surrealism to it, because it sounds like they're just babbling and screaming. It's so ambitious.
I remember watching it and thinking "who bankrolled all this?" Then I found out it was the Polish government, and they pulled funding when they saw how crazy it was. Even unfinished, it's still a masterpiece.

When Evil Lurks is notorious for a retarded main character but his actions never took me out of the film so maybe I'm just retarded
I think the answer is to just have a character that feels real so it doesn't seem like the plot is stringing them along to their next decision

Trying to find an old TV slasher with a killer in a dark theater
I’ve been thinking about this movie for years and it’s driving me crazy. I saw it on TV sometime before 2014, and now I can’t find it anywhere. Help me out or I’ll just lose my mind.
1. It starts in a basement or house, maybe on a beach or some random island or something.
2. Main kill scene: This dumbass jogger is running around a dark theater, notices the killer, yells at them (like that’s gonna help), and then gets butchered. Killer’s face is always hidden in shadows.
3. I think there’s a bathroom scene in which someone gets killed
This aired on European TV a ton back in the day and it was dubbed. I remember it being early 2000s or something.

If Carrie got a bucket of beer piss poured on her at prom, do you think she’d be more upset or less upset than pig blood?
>>
>>
>>
>>217736244
the point wasn't the blood being blood
the point was her single moment of ever feeling kinship and acceptance with her peers was turned into a cruel joke on her and made her sheltered and abused mind snap
it could have been cool refreshing water and things would have still turned out the same way

I honestly don't remember, I watched it a long ago. I want to say she chases some teens outside the building but I would be lying to you.
I tried looking for it a few weeks ago on my streaming services to watch with my daughter but I didn't find it. We ended up watching the original instead.
