lol, they milked the Joelfags dry now it's time to milk the Mikefags.

The way MST3k turned into two factions is such a bummer every time I'm reminded of it.

That was Joel's greatest flaw: he couldn't license better B movies, and he was trying to keep the show PG. He was limited by budget constraints, and what could on tv at the time.

old PSAs > old movies.

I know that Mike is objectively old but it's weird how he went from looking much younger than Bill and Kevin to looking much older than them, like he had some private health problem

I got into Rifftrax in december. Sometimes I watch in bed just to get tired. It's pretty fun though, I like it. I wish they focused on genres I like though, I feel like I've almost watched all the 50s crime movies, the martial arts films and the blaxploitation flicks. A lot of the other stuff doesn't interest me a ton.
>>
Imagine being Joel rn. Holy shit, Mike really was the sovl of the show.

Nice, I still watch RiffTrax a lot but without the skits and the puppets it misses some soul, rifftrax feels more like they show up and clock their hours compared to mst3k

i hope they bring trace back, i think he's very funny

>we can't call this robot Gypsy, because actual gypsies might get upset
Did they ever consult any actual gypsies, or was this decision made on behalf of gypsies without their input
>>
I honestly know nothing about this apparently decades long drama based on making funny voices over movie clips and how that somehow split the fandom like the red sea and produced multiple shows and 24 hour streaming feeds. Just came here to say you guys are weird, never change. Much love.
>>
Huh, so good revivals are possible after all.
Hopefully the writing staff and process will be more like the original show, and not like whatever they were doing during the Jonah era.
>>
Don't really see the point. Rifftrax has tons of subscribers on a mature streaming platform, live shows in theaters, their own videogame, and the ability to do more mainstream / 16+ movies. I'm not sure what they're getting out of the MST3K name

I guess they'll probably just make 4 special episodes and dump then on rifftrax.com and then forget about it
>>
>>217739394
>without the skits and the puppets it misses some soul
I skip all the puppet shit. Maybe it's a TINY bit charming, but I have never as much as cracked a smile at one of their puppet bits.
>>
>>217739473
Joel was surrounded by ultrawokies who convinced him it was a bad word now even though no one likes gypsies. I honestly have no clue why he didn't call her "Gypsum" like in the pilot, "GPC" is so fucking clunky and gay to say
>>
Holy shit, this is awesome - And this is someone who more or less liked the Netflix seasons. What happened? Did Joel just give up and throw the show in Mike's lap? Is he still involved?

Total financial collapse
Joel's contract with Netflix ended and he tried to make his own Netflix
It looks like that was ruinous enough that he had to sell the rights to MST3k back to Shout Factory
>>
>>217740195
Joel sold his stake in MST3K to Shout Factory like a month ago because his recent attempts to revive it didn't work.
>>
>>217737954
Based! I love RiffTrax because it’s basically the best era of MST, loved the late SciFi era wish it lasted as long as the original Comedy Central run
>>
>I’ve been incredibly lucky to spend my adult life making a living as an entertainer, and ‘MST3K’ has been a big part of it,” Hodgson said. “Creating your own comedic art form like ‘MST3K’ is deeply fulfilling and fun — but that doesn’t mean I’m required to work on it every day for the rest of my life. This move feels like the best way to encourage ‘MST3K’ to find its future, while I find mine, including the chance to focus on some new and different projects with fewer moving parts.
>>
I love shit like old Sherlock Holmes movies and other old comfy mystery stuff, but on rifftrax it's always riffed by Pearl and some other woman. Should I give it a chance or should I continue to ignore it?
>>
>>217740472
>some other woman
Bridget Nelson, Mike's wife and writer/occasional actress on MST3K. I'd give them a watch, they may not be A tier but they can be pretty funny on occasion.

I completely understand why they hate that shit
They put in the effort but you can tell that James Cameron's Avatar interests them less than some 1950s feature about an asbestos salesman chasing his wife around Vancouver

The one exception to this was Twilight. Twilight was the biggest movie ever made that was also pure MST fodder.

The first MST3K I ever saw was SST-Death Flight on channel 13 affiliate KCPQ sometime in 1989 or more likely a re-broadcast of that in 1990. So I will always love Joel and appreciate him...and have even been to one of his live shows back in 2017 and it was perfect and funny, but I prefer Mike.

My favorite thing Rifftrax did is that they partnered with James Nguyen, director of Birdemic, to release his previously unseen first two films, "Julie & Jack" and "Replica"

Replica is a particular masterpiece because the whole thing was apparently filmed inside a Sega CD game. It's free on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb4Emlj_pYA

But I really have to recommend Julie & Jack, and going in blind. It turns out that every Nguyen movie has the same premise: An incredibly dorky autistic guy meets a dumb blonde and they fall in love and then something absolutely batshit happens (we all know what happens in Birdemic)
But the big reveal that happens halfway through Julie & Jack is so retarded and implausible that the riff is just Mike, Bill and Kevin exclaiming "What? WHAT? WHAT?!" with increasing incredulity for 15 seconds.
>>
>>217741547
>filmed inside a Sega CD game

come again?
>>
Personally, I don't like to watch Rifftrax for movies that are already hilarious. I feel like it ruins funny scenes if they make a silly joke during a classic bad movie scene. In movies like Hard Ticket to Hawaii for example. For movies that are funny on their own, I prefer RLM.

>>
>>217741596
I hoped the screencap got the point across. There's live actors, largely interacting with greenscreened low poly JPEG backgrounds. Including scenes that should have been very easy to shoot on location, like an interrogation room where all the furniture is now inexplicably 200% size.

Like George Lucas does with $200,000,000

>Felicia and Patton having shit chemistry
>Awkward celebrity cameos
>Green screen out the ass
>The bots are dull as dishwater, and have no distinct personalities
>Black Servo ("I'm gonna have soul now!" - fuck off)
>GPC
>Not only is Crow randomly voiced by a female, she sounds like she thinks she's voicing a Sesame Street character
>Overlong and unfunny musical numbers out the ass
>The riffs have no time to breathe, and sometimes come so fast and frantic that they're riffing on top of one another

There are a few decent episodes during that era (Cry Wilderness, Avalanche, Starcrash, Mac and Me, Ator, Munchie), and Emily is a piece of ass, but those seasons were an abortion overall.

I'm looking forward to the Mike episodes just because I know that I already like what those guys do with Rifftrax, and it'll have the added bonus of the Sci-Fi bots and Pearl/Bobo/Brain Guy back. I would honestly be fine if they dropped the SoL angle altogether, and just make it a slice-of-life thing where Mike and the bots are hanging out at home watching shit on TV or something, and maybe Pearl/Bobo/Brain Guy are their neighbors or something.

Mike, if you're reading this, please do Night Beast. Between Rifftrax Galaxy Invader, Cinematic Titanic Alien Factor, and that, it would close out the Don Dohler "Cheesy Alien Murders Poorly-Acted Rednecks in the Woods" trilogy. Those movies are objectively bad, but goddammit if they aren't still charming as hell in spite of it, and a goldmine for riffing.

To my rough recollection, when everyone else went west to seek their fortune and glory in California after MST3K ended, he stayed at what was left of Best Brains with Jim Mallon. They did these weird early internet flash animations with the bots, but since Trace and Bill were both long gone, Paul did the voice of Crow in them.

Legend is that Joel and Jim disagreed on the direction to take the show in (Joel was against doing a movie, most notably), so Joel stepped down rather than let their conflict hurt the show. So ever since then, there's been a "Jim Mallon is a bad guy who forced Joel off his own show" narrative.

Rifftrax has to be a cheaper overhead. I don't know how it works really but I don't imagine you have to pay any license fees to anyone if you're just doing your own commentary. From there it's just the name and history and you're off to the races.

I'd rather they just go full Stockholm Syndrome (Mike missed being Pearl's prisoner and asked to come back) and give the dynamic that Mike and Pearl are working together to find that one bad movie to help Pearl take over the world. Meanwhile get Emily and Jonah to do a cameo and turn over the bots to Mike and Pearl because they wanted to reunite with Mike and run a storyline where the bots try and find out if Mike broke bad or if he's subjecting himself to torment because he's fundamentally broken and have the bots restore Mike back to his old self
>>
>>217738292
Joel blew all his budget on getting the rights to Godzilla movies, at a time period when Toho showed no interest in allowing parody or depicting Goji in a comedic context.

>>
>>217748500
Film Crew got killed by Jim Mallon. When Rhino rebranded to Shout Factory, a lot of contracts had to be redone and Shout had signed Mike and his crew to make a MST3K replacement because there was tension over Mallon not paying them royalties or money in general for the bonus material they were doing for the Rhino MST3K DVDs.

Mallon meanwhile was pissed that Film Crew existed and basically told Shout that he'd renew his contract to let them make MST3K DVDs only if they killed Film Crew, which already had four episodes made and Shout was contractually obligated to release. So they told Mike, Kevin, Corbett that they wouldn't sign off on any new FC releases, which led to two things:

1. The birth of Rifftrax explicitly to fuck with Mallon and Shout

2. Mallon having to go crawling back to Joel, Trace, Frank, and even Weinstein to film said DVD bonus material, which is why for about 3-4 years, all MST3K DVD releases were predominantly Joel episodes and Kevin and Mike not in any bonus material.
>>
>>217751254
Confusing shit. Joel got the Godzilla films 100% because the films were considered public domain at the time due to rights issues over the dubbed versions being murky as fuck. It wasn't until around the late 90s when the US Godzilla film came out that Toei paid money to basically clear up the rights issues via their lawyers buying back the rights to the US dubs, which is why shit like Godzilla 1984's US. Dub is lost media and why the the films all now go by their original Japanese titles.
