Finished Siren's Kiss. As an adaptation, it is abysmal. As a separate entity, it barely passes muster. Really should've been 8-10 eps, it did not have the gas to for 12. That last ep went on for forever, impressive that they managed to sneak in some PPL for the world's ugliest ring. The romance side was unconvincing, the thriller side was predictable and contrived.
Anyone interested in this should just go watch Ice World instead. It's got its own flaws but it's miles ahead of whatever they were doing here

I jsut finished season one.
For whatever reason it had some of the cheesy CG I expected in the first episode when he beats the shit out of his first partner and the part where the other officer gets ran over by a bus but the end of s1 where Bonghi gets beaten up by the cop in brass knuckles and later on when he shoots himself and gruesomely bleeds out had some surprisingly disturbing PfX work that shocked me a bit.

PARK BO YOUNG is overrated

There are some things that have always frustrated me about this actress . Y does she talk like a little girl when she’s miji. Even the younger version of the actress who is an actual high school girl did not portray it or talk like that. The character brief was basically that she is more open and outgoing than her twin . Which is how the younger version portrayed it . Meanwhile park bo young’s default for this brief is to switch talking like a little girl and pout. Like every other character she’s portrayed in this beat (strong women do bong soon ) . Coming to mirae’s the portrayal here is pretty much what she has done in her previous two shows . (daily dose of sunshine )

Yeah but it's less over the top and better at making you feel like absolutely ANYONE might be the killer. I was about to drop Mouse when they were having a conversation with the killer on live TV but I never felt that way with Beyond Evil.

Just finished Siren's Kiss. It was overall just kinda garbage and the FL had way too much plastic surgery to show any facial expressions. And she was always portrayed as being very beautiful, but in reality she was probably the ugliest looking woman in the entire drama.
The sister of the killer was very hot though.

Outside of erotic thrillers, they already do all those genres pretty regularly now. Historicals are probably the oldest, most classic kdrama genre in fact. Some of the oldest ones available are serious period pieces from the 80s. Older production methods didn't favor action, since they were shooting/writing/filming week-to-week as episodes aired for a large period of time. But now everything is mostly pre-produced so there's more variety. There's legal procedurals and thrillers out the wazoo, an action drama premiered earlier this month, we had 70s political thriller Made in Korea at the buttend of last year, there's a big super serious historical drama coming later this year, etc. If people write them off because they can't be bothered to look deeper into them, so be it.
That said, you seem to be discounting romance as a genre. Any of the genres you've mentioned can also be generic and cliched. A cornball romance can be well done and seriously produced with care/effort. In fact, that's always been something that's drawn people to kdramas. They like all the romance and they like that Korea shits out a steady stream of romances of all sorts. It won't be of interest to 100% of people but it's always been a big draw.
Rather than thinking of kdramas as fodder to fill whatever hole you believe Hollywood has left, it's better to consider them as their own unique entity with its own characteristics.

Quite the opposite, a good romance is great and "romance" entails a wide variety of genres, settings, tones, and characters. Problem is I think Korea much like Japan/China or Latin America tends to produce a lot of very formulaic, gauche drama porn that women eat up.

I understand that SK and the US are very different places with very different entertainment industries that are geared towards producing different things differently. Yeah, anything from the 80s-90s is a little rough to source. If you don't need eng sub, you can find some old ass dramas on Youtube or on the network's VOD pages. Some guy uploaded almost every ep of The First Republic on Youtube (search its native title 제1공화국) so it's probably out there on some korean torrent site.
Avistaz has a selection (including some of the Republic series but not all) but eng subs are rare. I think I've only seen 1 get picked up by a modern platform. Sandglass and Eyes of Dawn are both in the torrent pastebin. They're probably not exactly what you're looking for but they are classics set in real times of turmoil so they may be a decent start for getting into older stuff. There is romance in both, though it isn't the focus

In general, you'll probably have the most luck with things produced by Disney+ and Netflix. They have the steadiest stream of thrillers and action dramas. Recent releases like Karma, Low Life, Made in Korea, Bloodhounds (S2 just came out) might be worth a look for you.
Great King Munmu is the big serious historical coming out later this year, set in the Three Kingdoms period.
As for the romance stuff, it's a staple genre. There's so many and such variety that there's probably one out there you'd enjoy. But there's probably more that you wouldn't like honestly.
