It has been this way since Rebirth released. Pretty impressive that the "true" Final Fantasy fans here on the /ffg/ are more schizophrenic and insufferable than a bunch of grown ass men pretending to be catgirls while ERPing with other grown ass men. /xivg/ also talked more honestly about the poll, too. There was more actual Final Fantasy discussion on /xivg/ about the poll than there was here, despite the fact that the narrative keepers here will tell you that people who have ever played XIV have never played any other Final Fantasy game.

You don't need gil early on. If you got the collector's edition or whatever, you redeem your code and go to the moogle near port San d'Oria to redeem your OP starting gear that lasts to level 30. Your Trusts are most of your power early on, so your gear doesn't really matter. Just do your... Sparks of Eminence I think it's called? The quests in your menu. Just keep doing those and trade them out for ones relevant to your zone, and when you need gear, go to your starting zone and spend your Sparks on gear upgrades. That will last you until max level, at which point you start getting gear from Ambuscade. You shouldn't need to buy any gear at all unless you want glam or maybe you're extremely endgame and want to spend dozens of millions on stuff, or maybe you want to be a Puppetmaster and you're buying parts.

If you need spells, something you can do for money is resell spells. You can go to the vendor, buy a spell for 5k gil or whatever, then sell it for 10k and people buy it. Depends on your server. Find things that are reselling for a good margin, and are being purchased at least daily, and resell that. Or farm early quest drops, like the beeswax or whatever that early quest is.

The other day I was speaking to a friend, and we arrived to a curious conclusion...
Everyone, perhaps even Matsuno himself, put a lot of blame in Vaan being the protagonist as for why XII story goes to shit.
However, whenever you see Vaan in other games, be Tactics, Dissidia, even Revenant Wings, you quickly come to realize the dude isn't that bad. He's quite endearing. And same can be said about Penelo, honestly.
If anything it becomes apparent that the flaw of XII was to include Vaan and then do nothing with him. Nothing at all.
Matsuno would later come to admit he got "forced" by the higher ups to abandon his idea of a Basch or Ashe main leads, to instead include a "younger self insert" for the players. But again, even if that was the case, that's no excuse for him to simply do nothing with Vaan.
And honestly, when you consider this, you come to see the problem was never Vaan himself, but the party as a whole. They barely had any chemistry together. With or without Vaan. Vaan barely ever interacts with anyone that isnt Penelo or Balthier, Ashe same with Balthier and Basch, Fran is just there for her ass, and so on...
It's almost as if Matsuno didn't had much of a clue on what sort of party he should do. If there ever was any intent of there being a party whatsoever. More than "Replacing Basch with Vaan", its as if he got forced to add a party to a story that only needed 1 to 3 characters.
And that's HIS fault.

I was lying about it being the best.
While I don't it's that terrible, as an action game it is a failure, which is funny in hindsight considering how much they hyped up the action aspect.
The stagger system in XVI is probably one of the worst in any game ever. It is done in a way that is completely antithetical to the action. And the devs are also so obviously limited by their MMO experience. I played XIV after XVI and there were so many moments of "what the fuck XVI is literally exactly like this".
They did not know how to leave the MMO design behind, but they still wanted to go full DMC action.
This is the kind of game that might have been great if they went in an FFXII direction. It's funny since they openly cited Ivalice as a huge inspiration for them.
It's a shame since the actual animations for Clive's combat are stellar, super great and really does what an action game should do, but then everything around the action just drags it down instead of elevating the action.
If you want to make an action game, go do that.
SE already has multiple action-rpgs that do it way better than XVI.,
BIG wasted potential game, they clearly put a lot of effort into it, the production values and polish is high, but the design is baaad. Getting a DMC designer didn't really help them at all outside of the animations and controls being good.
Also, for all their talk and hype about the boss fights... they're really not that interesting or great either.
They're not TERRIBLE, but cmon now. Another place where the MMO designers fucked up.
I still like the game, but man it's almost another XV in execution.
I hope that if this team continues on XVII they have really learned something from developing XVI.

As stated in SE's earnings report, XVI met initial expectations, but did not have the long term sales they hoped for. It was financially successful (hence the sales announcement) but did not meet hoped for stretch goals. Rebirth, on the other hand, did not meet initial expectations, was not profitable, did not receive a sales announcement, and most likely is not meeting long term expectations either, because it probably still has not even met its initial expectations.

This whole thing is based entirely around week one sales comparisons and absolutely nothing else.
However, the reality is that its not about how its starts, but how it finishes. XVI died after that initial week, whereas Rebirth kept getting discussed and and kept getting positive coverage, leading to this absolute brutal mogging more than a year after the initial release of both games. Seems like Rebirth may finish ahead in the long run.
