The problem is simply the fact that we do not have a true (canon) "Sonic vs Knuckles" game/story at all.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles being a classic 2D Genesis game means that this "Sonic vs Knuckles" story that emphasizes their rivalry and duality basically doe not exist at all. Honestly, the same could be said for Tails & Amy, as well, with their own debuts in the classics.

And then Sonic Adventure completely and utterly fails to properly capitalize on "Sonic vs Knuckles" either. Knuckles is one of those cases where his entire concept has never been well-executed and that is a severe problem that throws the entire franchise and fanbase off-balance, hence the obsession with Shadow to try and fill that space. But that doesn't work, because Shadow is functionally just another Sonic.

The problem there is that Blaze being "Nega-Sonic" immediately came with wanting a "Nega-Tails" role for her, which went to the Girl Tails (Cream) before we got the 'real' "Blaze's Tails" (Marine).

But the problem -there- is that when you take Tails and invert all of his character traits, OR if you take Blaze and reverse-engineer the perfect complimentary partner for her in that regard... you get Amy. Marine in Rush Adventure is just another Amy, with the same personality. Even her arc in that game is too similar to Amy, just without the romance angle.

And this all doesn't work because Blaze's need for a "Tails-analogue" clashes with Amy's own role and status where SHE is a Sonic-analogue with her OWN Tails (that Blaze "stole" in the first Rush game).

And then there's the fact that when you reverse-engineer an "Anti-Blaze" or "Anti-Amy" ... the result is still each other, as well. Though, I guess since "Nega-Knuckles" is Rouge, then Rouge is Blaze's best Knuckles... But still, it basically creates a situation where Blaze becomes the MC, and Amy is just relegated to HER sidekick. When in reality, Amy herself should be the female MC while Blaze would be her -rival-, if anything. Though, I guess that's the same thing, just different perspectives...

Blaze is like a class president type while Amy is like your girl next door, and that automatically is just the girl version of Sonic and Tails -and- a typical jock/nerd dichotomy.

Any random person playing the games is likely to not even know the manual stories exist. And even then, it's all just "told", not "shown".

How much do the games themselves actually convey? Sonic 3 & Knuckles is widely considered to be the peak of the classic era stories for how much it tells the story in-game, and it's still severely limited by its own nature as a 2D genesis game with no dialogue or anything. I'm 100% certain it's because she's the only writer IDW can find that's willing to effectively be paid below minimum wage. We know that the only reason why Ian gets hired by Sonic Team at all is because he's cheaper than Pontaff were.

all IDW has to do was put time skips in between each issue instead of having every single issue be set immediately after the previous. Then you can have a period of time when the emeralds aren't accounted for. Because IDW is one long ongoing comic there is only one time where you can fit Frontiers. That is why it's issue 68. In every other arc you can tell that Frontiers is impossible.
