Stages are assembled as part of a sequence (say 3, 4, maybe 5 stages together) and dolls that have completed a stage can't be reused for the rest of the sequence (or maybe they can only be used a max of x times). Rewards are only gotten when a sequence has been completed. Alternatively, you could have multi-level stages where you have to field 8 (2x4) or 10 (2x5) dolls.

How I'd improve GF2's gameplay:

that's why I said "rework". Currently classes have their buffs baked into the abilities, not as a global buff on top of their stats/abilities; currently it's more of a label than actual role.
The point here is to make classes more defined, fill the niches better and still contribute in most cases. With a new cover system sentinels and supports would still be able to do their thing but if left unguarded they'd sooner or later get destroyed, and vanguards can exploit their fast mobility in hit & run tactics, reposition to make the most out of fresh cover, and in some cases even have some evasion mechanics to play risky, without having to rely on cop-out mechanics like cloaking devices.
Also another thing I forgot to add to the previous point.

Why? It'd be primarily for evasion tanks and vanguards; for the rest of the units it'd only be relevant in CONCEALMENT, and not a place where you want to be stationed permanently unless you really like to add praying to your rotation.
Let me be very clear here. I'm NOT talking about hit chance alla X-com. Only very specific dolls would benefit from evasion on a regular bases. Only source of evasion outside of that would be concealment, like smoke bombs or mist that we already have in the game.

AOE is already poorly balanced in many games, GF2 is no exception which led to stat bloating arms race within a year. It's also not helped by the devs willingly hand out ignore cover upgrades on dupes AFTER implementing cover from AOE bonuses at launch.
Bulwarks get lumped with Supports because their tanking is irrelevant if you can DPS race enemies fast enough, so in 99% of cases (the 1% being 40/40s where you aren't allowed to kill everything) only their support capabilities matter.

Except it's not. Hit chance can be a one way thing, or a two way system; hit chance on the attacker, dodge on the defender.
An evasion-only mechanic means that only the defender will have a stat. If the defender has no evasion, then there's no issue whatsoever. X-COM has a hit vs evasion system, and I'm not advocating for that at all, since there's no hit stat. As my first post stated, Sentinels would negate evasion through crits, and light ammo would negate evasion from concealment; AoE would always hit. Regular enemies would have no evasion outside of concealment.

It would be neat if non-boss maps has some challenge, that's all.
All I want to suggest is that they bake the DR with Stability buff they give everyone into the system itself, so AoE attacks will always have the -60% DR effect to put them on the same playing field as ST dolls, while ST dolls will still have to contend with Cover DR but can get around it with flanking. If Mica wants enemies for Klukai to sweep they can play with the Stability DR stat or just add more enemies with high HP/low Stability. I honestly don't understand this isn't how the game worked from the beginning.
