Not to sound like a wingnut but it was always about filling people's essential "god/spirituality hole" so they act with fervor and fanaticism for things that shouldn't be getting that much attention or passion. Tie it all together with "let people enjoy things" and that's one of the angles of why things are a fucking mess and a lot of entertainment sucks even if it has unlimited dollars and in theory should be better.

It's fun to meme on them but generally the bungie sound design has been top tier and a large part of what people consider the gunplay in destiny. I have normie friends that would never play the game but I've streamed shit over discord before and they have favourite hand cannons to the sound and implied impact of firing the weapon. This is no different in Marathon and it frankly already has better positional audio compared to arc raiders and even tarkov when it's being glitchy which is often.
The design of buildings is another unironic plus, in the ability to sneak through vents and the interconnectedness of rooms/floors. This give both an easier path to being a rat but also a skill-check in pvp to outmaneuver and/or escape if you get jumped or know a team is coming in. I personally prefer this more abstract sci-fi look to the wild-west or retrofuturism shit, though they can definitely do more in keeping distinct design language between different factions or biomes rather than the current generic approach.
my main issues are that I think the movement should be even faster, more aligned with destiny 2 pvp, and the visual design language of the weapons and runners are complete dogshit

The problem with D2 pvp was always the placement of terrain in maps was awkward, not a ton of verticality, and basically no physical structures that you can enter/approach multiple angles. There are so many maps where you can't even perform a conventional flank because you're basically going all the way around to a right angled chokepoint where you're at an innate disadvantage. There's so many spots on maps where you can just outplay somebody being inside of somewhere that is overly protected by just how the map area is designed.

They already did that with D2, and it ruined the franchise. Originally, D2 was supposed to end with Arrrivals. There was supposed to be more endgame content and an actual finale, but the campaign was intended to end there. D3 was at that time going to start with Europa and beyond light. This got ditched because it was determined to be more cost effective and would get more players, if they just erased everyone's current version of the game, and dropped them into a sandbox that required you to pay the $100/year Destiny subscription. Beyond light and on is the purgatory that D2 players deserve for putting up with nubungie's bullshit. Nubungie is never going to release standalone games again, or even games you could consider complete with expansions. They're a company that sells entertainment in the form of mediocre disposable content.

100% terrain feels like it's placed due to aesthetics and not for actual pvp map design. It definitely feels more intentional in marathon, at least with the vents and how rooms are setup inside of buildings. Destiny had a few pvp maps that were well designed. D2 has none and that's due mostly to the fact that the gunplay becomes too sluggish if you have to aim on the y-axis. D2 is a horizontal or flat shooter. At the absolute most you get two levels for players to be on, ground+1 or ground-1. There's not a single pvp map in D2 with three levels where interactions can happen. Ground+/-1. There's two specific spots in the pvp maps i can think of with three height levels, but walls keep both of them so you can only engage one of them at a time. Destiny pvp had way better maps than D2, because of the verticality in many of them. This caused scouts to be dominant, because staying back and watching with a wide field of view, waiting til your roaming super was up, was the best way to play if you weren't on crack. This doesn't "look" as cool as getting crsipsnapcracklepop headshots with a handcannon though. Hilariously this is why jumping keeps handcannon users from being able to kill you in D2.

Perfect example is how bad Cirrus Plaza is even with the whole "we made it for 3s" any of the actual verticality and open space is in 20% of the map's center that isn't in the gaping middle hole. The rest is a bunch of cubbyhole tunnels that sure have little barricade like speed bumps to obscure vision slightly, but you're basically fighting in extremely closed quarters where you're things boil into a game of who fucks up first. Not totally dissimilar to A and C at Bannerfall where you can just be a little fucker in your bunker waiting for somebody to take the wrong angle and you just get on the right side of a duel.

Or classic Burnout, it's basically a giant grid with an open far cliffside. Very easy to control angles when inside and it's like say there's a capture in middle, there is no "let's swoop around and flank" when there's only so many entry ways and places 3 people can be. I know this is where Destiny's arena shooter like dna can bleed in just a little, but it always bugged me how botched a lot of the maps areas can be. Javelin 4 often is well regarded because you're not totally bound to overusages of block by block right angled entries, there's more curvature in walls and openings and actual box placements and other things where you can take a fight and retreat without being in full protection of multiple layers of interior space. You can also traverse space with options on your approach. Even forcing a scrap if flags on B isn't terrible because there's enough space and openness to fight around things, back into center, down the halls, etc. It's engaging enough.

Right now I'm around 350 or so and I just run the new baby mode stuff they added because it's the only content where I'm allowed to have fun anymore due to the fixed deltas.

It is occasionally. I feel delusional for what I'm about to say but I genuinely think destiny could have been one of "those" games. Theres something about it, at least in D1, that just feels iconic. That it was supposed to be something great and be on the same level of recognition as halo but just never made it.

The more weathered look of the world itself. Destiny 2 is "too clean" and too colourful. Basically D2 NuStar-wars-ified the artstyle. Destiny 1 also just had a more cohesive vision where everything just made sense, Destiny 2 they are scrambling constantly and thats why we go from a fantastical throne world to generic cyberpunk city. Unironically though vanilla D2 had more soul than current D2 which is kind of sad desu.

it took the lore and the world seriously. it was able to indulge in mystery and ambiguity, but it still tried to be coherent. destiny 2 lacks the narrative and world coherency that destiny 1 had, the devs stopped taking the lore seriously because it gets in the way of making disposable content.

The funny part is that the average person playing halo 2 and 3 multiplayer in the 2000s probably made more actual online friends on xbox live that they'd talk to or play with frequently than people ever have in destiny. Now you could say that a lot of it was superficial friendship but still, if you were into custom games at all it was guaranteed that your friend list would fill up, and those people would invite you all the time and some autistic reliable hosts would send m2afs all the time to let everyone know when a lobby is starting up.
