CC and AoE damage is everything in that fight. It can be completed just by sitting back near the portal and using everybody's Actions to throw Grease, Alchemist's Fire and Smokepowder Bomb around. This is especially useful against low HP but annoying enemies like those Crows. Gloom Stalker won't shine in this battle but you can still make him useful by doing the dirty work. Evoc Wiz can (and should dominate) with the mentioned CC/Aoe DMG. Life Cleric generally lacks the offensive punch but he's tanky and has access to Spirit Guardian already! Have that shit on 24/7, it can single-handedly win the battle especially with some Radiant Orb and/or Reverbation items! The Paladin is a Paladin, utilize him accordingly. What's most important, and I can't emphasize this enough: use everything at your disposal! Do you have a useful Elixir on everybody? Any summons at strategic points (and are they supported potions or the Paladin's Aura)? What about the scrolls you collected until now? Did you craft some grenades the last time you bothered with Alchemy?

Lae'zel is a well-written character because she undergoes coherent change with respect to who she is initially, all while retaining her value system. This is especially impressive considering her youth, relative inexperience, and the unquestioned worship of Vlaakith in which she was raised. A dogmatic worldview tends to resist new perspectives. When she learns that the foundations of her world, that the history of the githyanki, were all based on a lie, one might expect her to break down. But Lae'zel is strong-willed enough to find a new purpose - becoming an agent of liberation for her people. Critically, this change is believable and does not betray her character with a complete turnaround of who she was. It is "earned." Change by itself is not necessarily indicative of a well-written character - older, more mature companions like Jaheira or Minthara are perfectly fine as mostly static characters - but it is possible for Lae'zel and Shadowheart. They are characters who can weather a crisis of faith without giving in to despair. When stripped of their faith, the foundations of their world, they still hold on to something deep within. For Shadowheart, it is her sense of self, her memories. For Lae'zel, it is her pride as a warrior and a child of Gith. Contrast them with, say, an alleged do-gooder who sold his soul for a good cause, yet can't even decide whether to save his father. An interesting and well-written character needs to be consistent in their beliefs and motivations. Lastly, you hypocritically conflate being biased toward a character with recognizing that they are well-written. Romance need not factor in this context. I don't particularly like Astarion, but I recognize that he is well-written, romanced or not. Similarly, even an unromanced Lae'zel remains a great character, because she grows and changes, learns to let go of her preconceived notions, all while remaining true to herself.
