Nothing makes you realize where you are as an artist like being forced to draw in ink (or in my case, fine point sharpie). The skill gap between "Oh I made a mistake. That's fine, I'll just erase it" and "Ah shit, I didn't read the line properly" shows the difference between an amateur and an intermediate.
You wanna be a lv2 artist i.e. fast. You get it right the first time.

After we were done playing I switched to Sonic and realized he had different mechanics for the mod, and then I played the mod's tutorial and it seems that those walljumping mechanics are what the entire game is built around, so we may have missed part of the intended experience. Maybe it has something to do with that, I think you can get a lot of height with those walljumps if you do them right

They say hatred is born from fear. But what do I fear of Silver, a copy of a copy of Sonic? What does a time traveller have that fills me with hate? A fear of undoing Sonic and what he stands for: A proclaimed hero by others who is beyond the extraordinary. He lives life to the fullest with no regrets, and when adventure calls he reacts appropriately and swiftly. To have all of that torn down by some nobody that is a walking undo button, angers me. The once almighty hero that could always beat the odds and gods is now lesser than a grey hedgehog time being that may as well be the hand of fate according to their universe. Silver for all his fraudulence makes Sonic into the very thing Silver is called by existing: weak, a fraud, not nearly as capable as one would believe

In a vacuum, this is a fun little indie design character for a typical 2d platformer.
But its not, the context is that this was some guys pretentious pitch to completely change the Sonic franchise and brand identity to this. This is someone who thinks they understand Sonic, thinks these are small tweaks to design, story and gameplay, but when you see it visualized, it's the furthest thing from anything people see appeal in the franchise for.

I think Colors reception was an overcorrection for Unleashed, because it's not that good either. Better than Boom/Forces, at least. No one looks back fondly on Baldy McNosehair and even recently I've seen new players say it just isn't very fun compared to some of the other games.

I think that it is between Lost World and Sonic Boom, that's where I remember seeing the tumblr side of the community start to crop up. Boom sonic is more sarcastic and willing to show vulnerabilities mainly due to it being a comedy show and making these things into a joke. It very much consisted of millennial humor especially toward it's second season with the meta jokes. With Lost World it tried to make make a melodrama factor between Sonic and Tails and make sonic learn some bizarre lesson about trusting Tails and the uncharacteristic whining over loosing his buddy. Lost World is the game that pontaff had the most control over script-wise of any of the 2010s games and it shows. This writing did not show its ugly rear and effects until the late 2010s going into 2020 with idw and prime however.
Therapy speak, the obsession with making sonic cry and be vulnerable, the obsession with making the cast more relatable and realistic is the cascading effect from boom and the meta era not taking these characters seriously. Laughing at yourself and the self deprecation was "relatable" and made these characters feel more "real" for breaking the 4th wall and not taking their roles sincerely. Prime and IDW only expanded an issue that was simmering on the surface that now the push back to get away from that and go back to more sincere writing like the 2000s is being met with the "that's boring and toxic".
Current gen alpha culture is built upon faux sincerity in which anything once consider cringe and played straight with sincerity is now based and hype and has aura no matter how ridiculous is can be. Which is why they have similar pushback to the 2010s era and idwfags that 2000s era adventurefags have even if the reasoning is not quite the same.

For the 2000s era adventurefags we know this is driven mainly by nostalgia, but I do think theres merit in the idea that going back to the sensibilities shown in that era would be complete nostalgia baiting as there are aspects that aren't quite dated yet the same way we see with classic sonic themes. Sonic Colors on Wii was the first game that made me question the general consensus of Sonic fans, people just wanted the daytime stages from Unleashed but it was so cut down for Wii, the levels were way too short just like Sonic Team warned Unleashed would be on a less powerful console withput nighttime stages, and the ranking requirements were dumbed-down for little kids. It should've really been insulting for Nintendo fans who wanted Unleashed HD, but amazingly, people liked the saturday-morning simplicity. Apparently they LIKED the Happy Tree Friends writers at the time. They ENJOYED that you could turn your brain off completely. I thought they were all nuts. Those games demand you to move, change directions, stop, go slower, speed up, use different attacks, engage with enemies and gimmicks, and had more platforming than Unleashed. Rolling has its own properties and is used to gain height. Rail grinding in Adventure 2 actually had its own unique mechanics, whereas Unleashed just makes you go forward and that's it. Unleashed is extremely dumbed down and its positive reception lead to the later games dumbing down the Unleashed day gameplay even more. That's how it got even more degraded with Colors, Generations, and especially Forces.

Actually makes a bit more sense since Knuckles is already the melee fighter and ST doesn't do much unique with the hammer except those hammerjumps she can do in Adventure. Turning the tarot deck into throwing cards restores the projectile ability she had at least.
