I don't think boost is a bad idea. I think it works far better in 3D than trying to shoehorn in spindash ever did, and Sonic has had a means of instant speed gain in every game that wasn't Sonic 1. I think Frontiers did a good job showcasing it as a mechanic by just letting you take it out of hallways. I don't really see it going anywhere any time soon and I don't think it should.

Sonic Battle was basically a sequel to Sonic Adcentureb2, so the way they handled it was to make Heroes a prequel to Battle and then make Shadow an interquel to Heroes and Battle. I'd go a step further and say if something happens ONLY in IDW that means its less of a reason to worry because it's just more proof that IDW is weird side material. If people treated IDW the way they treated Sonic Prime they would have more peace of mind. Sonic Prime had the exact same canon statements as IDW, but the fans don't take it seriously because the show is so insanely off-brand that being directly told by the writers, Ian, and SOA lore teams that it's canon isn't enough for the average Sonic fan to accept it. Strange right? It's literally the same reason IDW is considered canon.

The japanese side does not even care about getting their own characters right or have purity from external creators and writers, it's all about "well this feels like it works, so let's keep doing it". They never get the why behind what they do, just flow with it hoping for the best.

There is really no great masterplans and schemes, only the ordinary job of selling more merch about everyone's favorite cereal mascot. Mandates and canon like the rest is a tool of that and if sometimes it feels off or doesn't apply, just "forget about it" and hope you'll be back on track.

The word "canon" when applied to Sonic is meaningless because this series does not have a grand story to tell. It's just one off adventures. The introduce and discard plot points on a whim. They don't care.
