I firmly believe Sonic's characterization in the OVA is the closest to how Ohshima originally envisioned him and how he was described in his original 1991 character outline (it literally refers to him as having "an attitude"). He's an aloof, hotheaded jerk who will help people in need, but would rather be doing his own thing. I can't imagine JP Game Sonic giving the "Strange, isn't it?" speech, let alone "SHUT UP TAILS!" That's more Shadow or even Silver's thing.
Fleetway was also close, but may have went a bit too far with his jerkishness (outright bullying Tails and all). SoA turned him into a fun-loving jokester a la Bugs Bunny, which, while not exactly right either, still fit him just fine. He was always meant to be to Mario what Bugs was to Mickey Mouse, the cooler, edgier alternative to the safe corporate face of the medium.

The ova was based on CD, and when it was produced, it was during a time when Naka was still in America. So the only point of reference to Sonic was Oshima. So even if Naka was credited, the main person who worked on it as director was Oshima and not Naka. So it ended more like an Oshima thing than Naka's if you want to see Naka's version, it's SOnci from Sonic X.

I enjoyed the Metal Virus arc, but I also completely agree with you. It was obvious they had no real idea how to deal with the virus other than rely on the Chaos Emeralds as a cop-out. I was gonna mention Frontiers, but then I remembered the arc happened before Frontiers even got announced.
It happened too early, and didn't really give us any time to grow with the new characters before they had them being infected left and right, and because of how they set things up so Sonic always wins, it really makes the arc pointless because we already know everything works out.
I'd love to see them make a What If spin-off in the future that focused on alternate scenarios, like if Sonic never stopped the virus or if Eggman died, something that adds proper stakes without ruining the canon. A sub-par but decent compromise.

Yes, there a compelling in-universe justification in batman's case. But just like anything, batman's "no-kill" rule is mostly just there to keep to comics marketable to children and ensure popular villains can keep returning. It's certainly the same with sonic, except sonic has never had a no-kill rule before, he just "didn't kill". Sonic has also never needed a no-kill rule. It's not hard to come up with ways for eggman to escape or survive, and in the games you're pretty much always fighting robots.

Eggman created the metal virus. Sure, Sonic couldn't have seen that coming.
Eggman killed all of Whisper's friends. Retroactively (according to IDW) Sonic is the reason Eggman is alive to do this
Eggman created and continues to torment Belle
Eggman is the reason Starline created Surge. Instead of denying this, Sonic says he won't change just because of it.
Sonic insists that Eggman and Sage living is worthwhile. He sometimes argues that they could be redeemed. That would be fine in a story that is meant to focus on narrative and actually come to a conclusion but we know for a matter of fact that Eggman cannot be redeemed especially not in a comic book because he's Dr. Eggman, the star villain of the Sonic franchise. Every time Sonic discusses this he is wasting time challenging a meta concept beyond his comprehension.
It really shouldn't be that deep. It should be like Sonic Unleashed where the planet can be smashed and nobody dies. This comic is not equipped to fully tackle the concept it insists on bringing up.

In the classics he's just putting bunnies and birds into robots and even in the modern games he's mostly a "Cobra Commander" type megalomaniac who does shit like Ransom the world with a space station laser or mind control a bunch of people. The problem is in settings like Archie or IDW where Eggman is SHOWN TO HAVE ACTUALLY KILLED PEOPLE

I don't think Sonic has a "no kill" rule, I think, like, if his enemy dies after he wins it's just not gonna keep him up at night or anything. He sent Eggman hurtling towards his doom dozens of times. I think after the third one he just sorta accepts he's gonna come back

The problem stems from a complete misunderstanding, or reinvention, of Eggman's character in different media.
Canonically, Eggman is just a silly round dude who wants to enslave shit (birds, giant monsters, people) to do his bidding and take over the world. He does this through crab machines or stuff with his own face on it. Little goofy goober Egg Pawn type shit. He's a menace, but cartoonishly so.
Any time something gets destroyed, it's not by his own doing, but that of a third party. Chaos, Gaia, Gerald's Eclipse Canon. He'll use them as threats to get what he wants but not to actually, intentionally destroy or kill.
Ian and his previous cartoon writing ilk, however, decided that actually Eggman is a fucking evil dictator who will happily doom the entire planet on a whim and sentence people to death. They made him irredeemable, which is why everything falls apart.
Sonic lets Eggman get away because, in the grand scheme of things, there's much greater threats that he can potentially help with.
In the comics, they've made him the greater threat. And that's not who Eggman is.

That's not the reason. That was just a backup system the second eggman had when he was roboticized, which was made useless once he was turned human again. It was Zonic insisting that the prime universe needed an eggman for some sort of balance that kept Sonic from killing him.

My point is that we keep bringing up a plot point that literally cannot progress. Sonic keeps bringing up that Eggman might decide to be better one day. He won't. Not just because of Sega mandates but because Ian reassured us repeatedly that Sage and Eggman will not be redeemed and if he had total control Sage would make Eggman worse. That means every time Sonic even suggests otherwise a weird almost fourth wall break. This isn't like Naruto where there is a legitimate possibility that the protagonist will get what they want. Sonic has mentioned this on upwards of 15 occasions and every time we know in the back of our minds it's pointless.
It's like if one day Ash Ketchum started talking about when he'll get married, then he starts to notice that 365 days have passed and he is still ten, then the characters start discussing onscreen why he is still 10 years old.

You won't like this, but I think RCS is perfectly fine. Almost all of my criticisms for the English VA come from lack of direction, or bad direction.
Him having a deeper voice in Frontiers was awful but that wasn't his call, he was told to do that.
Everyone praises him for Boom and rightly so, his timing was spot on. So it's mostly direction.
You could argue he's too deep sounding in general, but I don't necessarily have a problem with it outside of Frontiers.
But then I really disliked Ryan's voice and my preference is the GOAT Griffith, so consider me an outlier.

Looking at the entire broader franchise, there are definitely some characters who definitely fit there. Two I always go to is Clove & Cassia. While not exactly “edgy” or “adult” it’s something the average person would expect out of “GOTTA GO FAST!” Sonic comics.
Even in the games and canon, Shadow fits this criteria to an extent. Imagine the reaction of someone who only played the Genesis games reacting to his backstory. It’s so different and out of left field that people would expect.
A good way to think about it would be to tell the story verbally to someone who’s not a fan of the franchise. Does it sound like something from a kids game or a Sci-Fi/horror movie.

At least Jason Griffin put in some effort in the voice acting, but with Roger Craig Smith it seems like he doesn't care at all about voice acting, so all he does is use that "I'm bored" voice the whole time while voicing Sonic.

Sonic is like if Ronald Mcdonald existed in a serious grimdark narrative but still had to act exactly like Ronald Mcdonald. It only works if you go out of your way to make Ronald some kind of mythic figure who is correct to act that way in such a bleak world, if you actually challenge the realistic consequences of Ronald's Burgers and Fries philosophy it starts to sound strange and perhaps even hedonistic.
You can't just add characters who had their meals stolen by the hamburglar and take it seriously. You can't just write a story about how someone was robbed by the Hamburglar on the day of their mother's funeral because now we have to actually analyze the hamburglar as a serious problem in this world that Ronald allows.
