maybe better way to call it was non dogshit but some guy was shilling it hard i just bought it for shit and giggles but i'm almost done with the package i'll probably try a lighter roast now but i need at least one bag of decaf
probably should get a scale instead of eyeballing it and wasting coffee but theyre like $40 for a timemore or hario and i can't decide if i want one of those or just a cheap regular one since i want them to be usable for cooking

Iunno bro I go to the shop and ask what's new for spresso and she says nuffin thehn I ask what's new for filter and she goes yeah all these right ere. I have no idea why they can't make espresso with the same beansies. I think they just have to spend more time dialing the process in to make it good for a shot when with V60 you just make it the standard way and it's good by default.

But idk.

whenever I wanna make espresso from whole bean and not pods, I just refill used pods and tamp lightly, the machine skewers the pods in the same place every time so I can just keep using them indefinitely with 5 cent foil stickers

When I make espresso I'm usually using 18g and try to pull 36g in about ~35s.

After having my plunger for a couple of months now, and being content with letting sit for 4 minutes before plunging today I tried closer to the Hoffman method and wow, definately a fuller creamier and probably stronger coffee. Thought it might have actually gone cold with the extra time but was pretty good. Not really sure what the science is behind it all, but was well worth experimenting with.
>>
>>21857582
I know this feel bro.Walking or cycling to a nice comy coffee shop and just being inside it gives you good feels. I have a couple I enjoy, but one of them has started making bad coffee, turns out it was only comfy because of this one barrista. Not sure what the new people are doing different but I no longer can go there. It will probably not last long after this now anyway.
>>
>>21857836
Ironically my new favorite shop is the one the two good barista opened after they left my old favorite one and my old one turned to shit. Anyways, there's an easy barista test for when you first see a new one. If they can't make a macchiato correctly, they can suck this dick.

>bro rate of rise is SOOOOO important bro it's the difference between a good roast and a great roast
Yeah maybe but rate of rise is fuck easy to maintain you just slowly ramp up heat and ramp down cooling and drum speed.
>Bro the malliard reaction is your golden goose it's soooooooo important you want it as long as possible
No you actually fucking don't - too long on the malliard and you burn away all the sweetness and acids you're trying to get. Simply having malliard last long enough for you to smell its telltale sweet scent is enough.
>development time and ratio
Complete and utter meme. Maybe good to have as a baseline but the time that actually matters is time before first crack, and then time after first crack. But I'm really of the mind that just providing a ballpark window of time after first crack would work for medium rather than development ratio since you don't even use development ratio for light or dark roasts.

If I can reliably make better tasting coffee than Counter Culture's Single Origins, am I a decent roaster or did I just get lucky with my choice of beans? Also, would selling eight ounces of coffee for twenty dollarly doos after buying a pound for 11 bucks be highway robbery?
>>
>>21860509
Yes, charging $40/lb for your shitty home roast is insane. That's literally like Sey, September, Dak, or Hydrangea prices. Counter Culture hasn't been good in like 15 years.
>>
>>21860537
Yeah you right. What do you think would be a fair price to charge? 15 bucks is the floor, below that I don't have a margin with spoilage and packaging.
>>
>>21860553
$30/lb is still ridiculous for some guy with a home roaster probably a sr800, behmor, or genecafe.
That's still more expensive than like SW and I'm sure you are just getting your greens from Happy Mug or Sweet Marias. All the really good greens get bought up by specialty roasters.
The fact that you even ask if you are a good roaster or did you get lucky with your bean choice means you just started roasting and have only ran a few different beans at most.
Just enjoy the much cheaper coffee and learning how to roast instead of trying to get some startup going without having the experience or the gear to do it.
Not trying to be a dick but its one of those things, same with growing culinary mushrooms, where everyone who gets into it thinks wow I should start a business this is so easy.

that they want to still taste of coffee so it has to be a strong dark roast.
you see it in specialty cafes too, 99% of drinks are sugar slop or normal milk drinks.
nobody orders straight espresso
and the only black coffee is americanos and the like.
which doesnt really count in my mind.

>>21860807

>>
>>21861053
No theres a reason we all import Canadian Mist.
>>21861058

>>21861059
Yes, that was me. Yes, I'd prefer not to buy 10kg+ of one variety at a time. I don't drink coffee every day, 1kg of beans can last me 6 - 8 weeks.

Usually buy some medium grind ground coffee which is perfect for my plunger, but I was at a different place today and bought some ground coffee thats said it could be used in expresso or plunger, and the grind is definately finer. There was still dry cofffee in the bottom of my plunger after adding water so had to give it a stir but this in turn led to no crust on top of my brew like the medium grind would normally have. Did I wreck my coffee by stirring it too early. Not sure.

The difference is out of all the coffee places I visit there's maybe one or two that actually have the perfect mix of great coffee and good vibes. Eh, couldn't hurt to try. But no man it wasn't (just) family being amazed at non Starburnt tier coffee, I did blind taste tests against Counter Culture's Single Origin and reliably came ahead. But I didn't use the exact same bean as them - a Guatamalan sure but they used Huila I used Merida I got from Sweet Maria's. That Merida sold out quick, so that's why I was wondering if I just got lucky with the bean choice.

Too bad her grip strength is getting weaker so it's hard for her to attach the bottom half of the moka pot properly, but still she makes coffee everyday

I can't get light or medium roast coffee to taste good out of a moka. Only dark roast. Also, robusta blends taste better than single origin arabica out of a moka pot, but the inverse is true when brewed as pourover/immersion.
Light and medium roasts will taste acrid and burnt out of a moka, dark will taste smooth and chocolaty.
Is this all normal? I've tried all kinds of different grind settings, fill levels, and with and without paper filter.
>>
>>21862830
skill issue
probably grinder issue too
>>
>>21862830
>Is this all normal?
Yes. Moka pots suck. For anything lighter than burnt italian blends. But also just in general. Those burnt italian blends also traditionally incorporate cheap robusta as filler. They drink shitty coffee in Italy. Don't be like them.

royalcoffee's a really good deal if I knew a couple people I could split a bag with. I don't want to be drinking the same beans for months or years.
Thanks for the info.

today my espresso was tastier than usual
was it because it's been two weeks since the roast date?

Vacuum sealed and frozen greens will last virtually forever but I've roasted(and sold kek) some years old opened coffees with zero complaints. Royal's 22lb "Crown Jewels" are looking like your best bet for top tier quality but you're paying $60 on top for shipping/customs. Big roasters like Rogue wave are likely sourcing the majority of the beans through Royal while GBery is a solid tier or two down. But if you're already drinking secondwave-ish coffee its probably perfect.
10lbs goes quick. Let me know what you end up picking up. I was spoiled for the first few years of my roasting with a co-op. I paid cost of greens + a couple bucks to the guy sourcing and packing + like $12 shipping on 20lbs. Now I'm in the same boat as you playing the repacker rodeo.

You had never roasted before last thread and now you are opening a business? You realize most successful roasters worked in the industry for years before opening their own place right?
>>
>>21866760
it's not about the money for me, it's more fun. Also most places for beans wont get back to you without a company name and some others wont answer questions regarding the industry either.
Whether or not I'm successful isn't the point. I'm enjoying the process and hopefully continue to, as there's a lot around the 'roasting' too, that's business focused which is fun.
I know I've got to cut my teeth with doing plenty of roast 'reps' first but hey, no time like the present. Momentum helps!

Boys, despite my best efforts to mod it over the years, I think it's time for me to move on from my shitty Hario slim. I'm set on buying either the K0, K2 or K6 from Kingrinder but I can't really find anything on the K0 and K2. I mainly do French press and moka pot, mostly medium to dark roast, I'd love to get into pour over down the line and have absolutely no interest in getting into espresso.
Any anons here who have experience with these grinders and could help me figure out which is better for my use case?
