When Saber's traitor arc began, Touma had 2 of the people who trusted him taken out of the picture and 4 Riders turning on him right out of the gate; he had gotten a bunch of new problems that he couldn't just whack away with his newest upgrade; he had only 2 allies, one of which was a burden half the time because of his severe autism and lack of empathy; and despite Yuri being quite overpowered, Touma eventually realized he needed more manpower than that when they found out dozens of people got turned into books while they were busy struggling with a single monster of the week. And that was all on top of getting constantly brutalized while trying to juggle the Megids, his former Rider allies and Yuri's antics every week.

And it didn't get much better when he started regaining his allies either, because then he got a berserk form forced on him, Kento came back just to turn on him, his allies started getting depowered, the top brass of the Sword of Logos started transforming into OP enemy Riders and Bahato got released again just to fuck everyone over some more.

I know we like to shit on Takahashi and Geats and stuff, and that people find Zeztz boring. But I think ultimately Zeztz being a bit of a slow burn might work better for Takahashi.

Yeah, you definitely are. Even the japs are getting annoyed with how slow the show is and how confusing Nox is. Even by the end of the first quarter no mysteries were resolved, not that it has to reveal assuming but we didn't find out more about the Nightmares until now and CODE and The Lady/Nox's goals are still vague. It just wasted time with useless victim of the week stuff that didn't move anything forward. The story may be moving along now, but the characters are also all severely underdeveloped if not unlikeable except for Baku and his sister. Nemu doesn't do anything significant at all until the Nox stuff and still goes back to status quo the next mission, the Paranormal Division is genuinely useless and don't ever actually help or succeed, and Nox is just written awfully that he only exists to say cryptic bullshit. Zero was probably the most entertaining but he's "dead" now and The Lady is actually fun to watch, but she's kinda the same as Nox. So there's really no character you really want to see or root for.

Both of those shows had bigger recurring casts than q1 Zeztz though? Don't forget all the contacts in W, and how the villain faction from the start had 5 people on screen.

OOO had Eiji, Ankh, Hina, but also Chiyoko, Goto, Maki, Satonaka and Kougami in addition to the 4 Greeds.

Q1 Zeztz had Baku, Zero, Nem, Fujimi and Nasuka, then Minami and Nox as the villain.

I think it's that Takahashi prioritizes the ongoing serial narrative at the detriment of episode plots.
Often in some of the fan-favorite toku series, the monster of the week is used to frame something larger happening within the character arcs or the main story even if they don't have an explicit connection. But Takahashi has it sort of the oppotite. The kaijin feel sort of tacked on.
Most of the Nightmares have some direct relation to the central cast which makes the world feel small and instead of strengthening the themes and characters via having their development parallel the MotW plot, it's not subtle enough. All the Nem-related Nightmares aren't really serving to add to Baku's character since each episode is reinforcing that Nem is important, it's like the actual victim is an afterthought to their own monster attack.

To be fair to the producer he's a drama producer and wanted to make a show like Kuuga, which is why he wanted two-parters and for the first half to be episodic, the first quarter not turning out how he wanted to is probably why Q2 is already progressing the plot much faster despite still being the first half.
He probably thought Takahashi wouldn't fuck this up because early Zero-One had good cases of the week and Takahashi had worked as head writer for one season of Doctor X and The Woman of S.R.I. that were critically successful. He really should have picked someone like Riku Sanjo but I get wanting to pick the writer that came out with the whole core concept of the show you're making.

Bring back Rider belts inside the user that needs a henshin pose to come out. Enough of the Rider system stuff

The issue is that the cast is strictly regimented in where they are and what they can contribute. Real world characters stayed in the real world, which has no method of interfering with the dreams, and dream characters are in the dreams. It wasn't until Q2 that we got characters other than Baku who can, in theory, do shit in the dream world AND the real world. Not that fucking around in the real world would have any consequences whatsoever in dreams.
That's another big blunder, the real worlds only functions are information gathering, presenting stakes, and being the other place all the real world characters are locked into.

Minato has no creative decision on the story or pacing of Zeztz, Minato is just handling the action and the fashion of the cast. When they said in the interview "they got Minato to help because he has actually made toku" it's just on how the handle the fights, Yanaka has actually worked on toku before as a VP before Minato.

I didn’t know Gimmick Toys were a thing when Gavan Infinity was doing their rollout. Since then, I’ve gone back to watch Agito, Ryuki, and now I’m on Faiz.

Im starting to understand where fans are coming from about the gimmick toys influence. Not a literal hate, I still love all of the Part 2 Heisei/Reiwa forms for the shows I’ve seen but wow, I finally see how they have kind of overpowered the plot or even taken up time for real fighting scenes…? Part 1 feels like it can kind of breathe and not focus on a new form or suit every episode. Even the writing feels less typical (they are still KR shows, I can call out the second Rider in a heartbeat.) I hope this doesn’t read as a slight to KR overall, but to see where it was to how it is now… I would even take less flash in Zeztz at the moment.

I completely understand why KR is the way it is now, trust me, but wow… I wish they could have that push and have Part 1 style of plot and flow again.
