Other than the absurdly stupid decision to put the air filter under the seat, why do you put the xl650v and xl700v over the 2024 xl750? Heaps more torque, suspension is no more undersrung than the early models, and no risk of catching a center stand lip on things like the xl650v.
I guess there was the lighter weight of the xl650v, but that went to.shit immediately with the next iteration.

Add mediocre suspension and that ridiculous oil pan to the list, but modern Jap ADV bikes all seem to take issue with actually giving their bikes good suspension from the factory for some reason. Yamaha had to get bullied for like 5 years before putting halfway decent suspension on the T7 and Honda still sells the CRF300L with that absolute garbage suspension setup.

How does one ride year round in states that see moderate to heavy winters? Do you get studded tires?
I’ve heard for the cold you can just wear a snowmobile suite but what do you do for traction if you happen to hit some black ice?
I’m tired of the desert bros but I like being able to ride year round without worry

i'm picking up this klx 300 soon, and i'm looking at helmets. i imagine i'll do mostly trails and stuff. if i do much road riding it'll be around town and not highway stuff.
what's the correct play with getting a helmet? get an offroad helmet and a street one? or just an offroad one and use it in town too? or go with like an adv helmet?

This is what I did. I picked up a Bell MX9 and a shoei. I end up wearing my dirt helmet mostly unless I'm hopping on the freeway for extended periods of time. I also use plugfones for hearing protection.

Finally got my GSA back from first service, weather is dogshit, but even with the snow on the ground (not in my parking spot obviously) it was decent. Certifiably brick dick though.
>>28823530
Riding in snow is definitely a different beast. But definitely try to stay more upright. You're still gonna slide, but instead of going straight down, it'll feel more like you're riding offroad.
>>28823369
Knobbies help a lot. If you get into ADV riding, you'll end up with an oversuit/jacket that works great over pants. You're not riding for hours on end, just no way unless you like misery. If you hit black ice? Use your brain, if the road look salty, you're ok. If not? Slow down, and roll with what you have if you hit it. Stay as upright as possible with your body, lean the bike instead and be gentle on the controls.
>>28823318
Africa cool, but can't figure out what its for. Way too vibratey for me to do long miles, but too heavy for easy offroad. Just sold mine and bought an F900GSA. I have a WR250R for the offroad shit, and the GSA for light offroad and ADV/touring.
Put some offroad tires on my bike today, looking forward to seeing how bad it is in the snow

i ordered this ls2 blaze 2 in large and i feel like it's too big and too small. the size range is 59-60 cm for L and 57-58 for M. my head is like 58.7cm. i have to crank the little strap under the chin all the way, and i can still grab the chin bar and pull it up and the helmet slides back on my head, or i can push up at the back of my skull and the helmet pivots on my head. not really any side to side motion though.
i sat around in it this morning and after 20 minutes it started killing my jaw. it's pushing my cheeks in and i had to take the helmet off it was driving me nuts.
so i dunno about that. i think i'm going to get a different helmet anyway and take this one back to cycle gear. i think i'm just gonna do an MX helmet and wear goggles on the road. i thought this would be kinda neat for my supermoto but i don't really like how the faceshield feels.
any mx helmet recommendations?

i could do but i could also just return it and get a refund and get another helmet. it's from revzilla and they do instore returns at cycle gear.

do you think it would be a bad idea to "practice riding" at night? i haven't been on a motorcycle since i rode dirt bikes when i was like 14. i'm 28. i just got this drz. when i went to pick it up from the guy, he was out in the sticks and i stalled it twice letting the clutch out too fast, but after that no problem. i got all the way to fifth gear and tried to click another and realized "oh that's what people mean by that". it was very comfortable and i was excited to be back riding.
now i'm home and my neighborhood literally dumps out onto a 50 mph main street and there's always traffic. I planned to go do a 10 minute trip to go get some lunch today and i pussied out pulling out onto the main road. i was paranoid i'd fumble it shifting or stall it pulling off from a stoplight or something. so i just puttered around the neighborhood for a bit and came inside and wrote this post.
it just feels like a lot. i pull away in first and now the revs are high so i pull the clutch click up a gear, think about your throttle, now i'm turning, engine sounds like it's bogging drop a gear, stop sign coming up, clutch and front brake and rear brake and then stomp down to first, keep clutch held, blinker, mirrors, look both ways,
the whole time i'm just in my head like this. and it's fine when a couple cars pass me by in the neighorhood but the idea of having cars all around me, and having to mentally process all this is daunting.
do i just nut up and do it? or do i wait until it's like 11 pm and the roads are empty and i can ride the big boy road without scary cars
>>
>>28824193
>do you think it would be a bad idea to "practice riding" at night?
Yes.
You dont have the regular awareness to ride, why do you think riding in the dark would be an improvement?
you'll have more dangerous and likely inebriated drivers around at night
if someone hits you at night do you really think theyre gonna stop?
and do you even have proper hivis gear for night riding?
get over yourself, everyone had to learn at some point, youre not the first to stall a bike and you wont be the last
>>
>>28824204
>why do you think riding in the dark would be an improvement?
i'm mostly concerned about all the drivers that immediately complicate the situation. if i understeer a turn and there's no one around, no problem. i don't brake hard enough and roll through a stop sign, no problem. those things are problems when other people are around, and at night there are basically no drivers.
that's my reasoning.
i feel like a fag being "afraid" to ride on the road.

I don't know how I'm supposed to mount this rack
the bit marked in orange bolts on where the saddle bolts on, that's fine. I need to get some steel cut to support it at the eyes marked in green, but I don't know where they're meant to attach to
>>
>>28824547
The tab you circled in green might not be a mounting point. Racks like that are often made for multiple models, so sometimes signal lights get mounted there, and sometimes a rack will have a tie-in system for side mounted luggage.

It does sometimes, like maybe once a year. My g310r has stalled twice in the same place and wouldn't start. I just parked it in my friend's house that was close by and it started one week after. My Suzuki scoot has not given me issues. My Honder Jazz has given me no issues. Then my GSA is the new addition, zero issues from this one as well. G310r only starting issues like once a year.

what sort of storage would you recommend putting on a bike? i don't need a ton of space, just to get shit out of my pockets, maybe a bottle of water, etc.
i was thinking about either a couple liter tank bag, or a handlebar bag. does a bag on the handlebars change how they feel to move? how big can i get on a tank bag before it starts to feel weird to stand up / scoot forward on the tank?

This is a real location difference moment right here.
I learned to ride at night in empty parking lots, then on the empty night streets, then to normal commuting and everything in between.
If you live in a truly first world location, learning to ride at night is fine.
If you live beside a bar, or in "2am is life" town, maybe not.

I had wondered if the XR400 did that after the Dr350 had done the same.
They probably stopped after the 1 millionth owner over filled the oil.
When I bought the DR back from the auction it had like 4 liters of oil in it lmao

Honestly you'd think that because of the amount of 2stroke owners in the 90s that the owners would just use the correct amount of oil, but apparently farmer joe only likes to blow pistons rings and treat DR's and XR's like tractors.
At least piston rings are cheap. Beats replacing head because suzuki considered cam channels a disposable part.

That's the unmodified Honda Hornet engine that they use in the Transalp. Really, a lot of issues with modern ADV bikes seem to stem from using repurposed street engines
>T7s top-heaviness at slow speeds, probably of the better picks, though
>Transalp's weird off-road power delivery and vulnerable dangling ballsack
>KLE500's high seat height and low ground clearance
I'm gonna sound like a jeet for glazing the Himmy again, but being designed alongside the engine it uses definitely contributes to how good it feels off-road

Disclaimer: I seem to be the only one with a CB1000 in these threads and also havent ridden a bike in 10 years before getting back on them, so take everything I say with a big grain of salt.
I got a new Hornet 1000 a few months ago (Honda dealership) for below 9k€, warranty and everything.
My longest drive yet was in november last year, about ~7 or 8 hours with frequent breaks over 460km. Mostly highway, a few country roads here and there.
Not once have I felt uncomfortable on the bike, the seating position fits me like a glove (5ft6, if you're tall it might be uncomfortable I guess). In terms of QoL, the bike has everything I want and need: digital dash, different driving modes, bluetooth for calls/spotify/navigation, ABS and a good TC.
(The TC saved my dumb ass a few weeks ago, the fact that I didnt see anybody else riding in this weather should've been a hint. Wouldn't want to miss it.)
The bike feels very calm and controllable. If you really need the 152hp (or 155 with the SP version), you can just twist up to ~6500 rpm and have all the acceleration you need. Never felt like you could "accidentally" get there though, unless you whiskey throttle or mess up catastrophically in another way. In lower rpms, it's like riding any 600cc bike. You wouldn't notice the difference unless you intentionally wanted to make use of what the engine actually offers.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you live in the US, you might only be able to buy the castrated version of the CB1000 because they have some legislation or emission standards in place that require Honda to cap out the US engine of the bike at ~120 HP instead of the normal 152.
Recently got pic related for mine and will fit a luggage rack on the passenger seat, so I can tour across a few euro countries for 2 weeks this summer. God I love my bike.
I don't know about the other bikes you listed, but assuming you're going to a honda dealership to test drive the Rebel, do yourself a favor and at least try out the CB1000.

A CRF250F or 300F would be better if you're new to dirt. They have friendlier power delivery and will be easier to learn how to handle different terrain types on. Trade it for a 450 down the line if you really want more power, but a lot of riders stick with the smaller displacement bikes.
Like >>28825309 said, though, you're better off getting a cheap beater to learn on. There's a ton of them out there and you won't be having all your rookie wrecks on something newer and more expensive.

I would try to find a wrecked 600cc bike at auction, someone's stunt bike project, or just comb classifieds for the older ones. Sometimes people list bikes in the motorcycle parts section on craigslist that get way less traffic. That's how I got my R6 cheap. Older Aprilias can be cheap, and some of them use a rotax engine. They also come with ohlins and stuff like that from the factory.

Biggest cope to hide the fact you can't fix fuck all, stupid incompetent retard trying to bring everyone else down to its stupid level.
You save thousands fixing your own shit
You save thousands buying a fixer upper, especially if you're not a spineless sucker who can't barter
You can buy new, you can cry about how stupid the used market is, but you got me fucked up if you think something is a money pit just because you gotta do the maintenance the previous owner neglected or damaged components.
So long as the engine, transmission, frame/suspension isn't turbo-fucked then you're automatically ahead of the game.
I have effectively trippled money by buying fixer uppers for dirt then fixing up to proper standard and either keeping or selling it off.

How are you supposed to ride a literbike in a city if it goes 53 mph at half of available rpm in 1st gear? Are you supposed to hold the clutch all the time like when you go over a speed bump in a car just to go 35 mph like a normal person in a city? Aren't literbikes just meant to be ridden to, around and back from the track?

I need advice from an actual French rider, regarding (mandatory?) helmet stickers.
This summer I'll do a multi week tour across the northern french coast and apparently you're supposed to wear reflective stickers on all 4 sides and the top of your helmet. If the cops stop you and your helmet doesn't have those reflectors, they can prohibit you from driving any further.
Question: do I have to put on literal reflective bars on my helmet or can it be any kind of reflective sticker, like yoshimura logos etc?

Not a good deal. Way too expensive for a stupid first bike. Get CBR500R or CB500R. Rebel 500, Rebel 300, CB300R, CBR300R. SV650 (be a bit cautious). If you want cheaper, RE INT650, Guerilla 450. Triumph 400s, MT03, R3. KTM 390 is a sorted platform, it doesn't have any massive issues. All the issues on this platform has been sorted. If you really want to spend that kind of money on a bike, I'd rather get a CBR650R.

I have G310R, F850GSA and 125 scoot. I started on G310R, its a fine bike, its completely fine, but I don't like how spongy the brakes are on this and I don't like the torque curve. Highways its fine, but in twisties, at certain RPM, there is no power. Meteor 350 has better brake feel and feedback than the G310R. F850GSA doesn't have this problem and I don't ride it any faster than my G310R. I ride like a maniac on my lil scoot. If you are worried about power of CBR650R, just get an A2 bike, CB500R, INT650 or Dukle 390. ZXRR is not a good deal IMO.

other than that im getting some pilot sport radials and all the other goodies. gonna degunk the carbs, change oil, fork oil, throw on some steel brake lines, some sintered pads. chain looks fine just needs cleaned and lubed and after that she should be good to go. its been sitting in a garage for a couple years so its sort of a project bike right now but it should fix up nice. im excited.

get a trailer and mount a hitch to whatever vehicle you already own. i'm sure your vehicle has some sort of towing capacity. you could probably also just rent a trailer. where i am, i can rent a moto trailer for 25$ a day. i put a hitch on my prius which took maybe an hour total of work and cost a couple hundred bucks.

you probably could.
pic related trailer weighs like 180 pounds, plus a 300 something pound drz. maybe 500 pounds all in. you could go even lighter with a dedicated moto trailer but i use this one for hauling furniture and picking up lumber also. the trailer hinges so it folds up flat and i can push it against a wall. aluminum so it's light and doesn't rust. 500$ on marketplace.
having a real vehicle is useful though, anon. getting a cheap beater truck or even better a cargo van is worth all the "trouble" associated with it.

>different licenses for turbo/na/standard vehicles
right now it's just south australia that does this...for now. iirc it's basically just a 50 dollar paper test that really is just to tick some legal checkboxes and appease the masses that cry for daddy government to do something any time something unusual happens.
other states have their own flavour of pozz:
>WA was a holdout in regards to radar detectors but they finally succumbed and banned them after 12 october 2020
>QLD and VIC have unmarked fixed and mobile speed cameras...beware the random station wagon or crossover parked beside the road. buffer zone is also very small - only need to be 2-3 over the limit to get a ticket
>NSW all fixed and mobile cameras must be signposted, but they're trialling average speed cameras in two areas applying to passenger cars and not just heavy vehicles (anything with gross vehicle mass heavier than 4.5 tonnes). also yearly safety inspections, whereas other states either only require one when selling a vehicle, or none at all
dunno much about TAS and NT. NT used to have a section of highway with no speed limits but now it's capped at 130. They also tax vehicles by cylinder count + displacement which is pretty silly.
Also, at least in NSW, good luck getting let go with a warning. Police management have basically made it so that if you as a cop pull someone over, you need a REALLY good reason to only let them off with a warning and not give them a ticket. It really is revenue raising.

I wonder if the hitch on my car could carry my DR.
It looks pretty beefy, but it's a little rusted.

>a Maxi Scoot, say a Burgman, would require a licence that includes the 350 dirt bike anon posted
Here, I only need the one motorcycle licence to ride any type of motorcycle but each individual motorcycle would need to be registered. Unless I ride on my own property. And since I have no dirt in my apartment I have to ride a dirt boke into the outback to find some dirt to ride one. I can either register that dirt bike or tow it behind my maxiscooter (which is already registered). So I have to weigh up the cost of a trailer compered to the cost of registration for the dirt bike.

Police pulled a 911 driver over for speeding and a truck lost control and destroyed all of the police members who were attempting to ruin the 911 driver's day. The 911 driver promptly pulled out his phone and recorded the aftermath of the truck incident.

I wish. I understand that Japanese biking culture is streets ahead of any other biking culture. They even have an animated series called Bukuon! which depicts school girls riding bikes. When I grow up I want top be a school girl who rides a bike.

Bikes are quite forgiving, just trickle them around and you'll be ok, just because first breaks the limit doesn't stop you from being in third or fourth.
Pic has been capable of any countries posted speed limit in first since 1990. It's a 750 btw.

Get dual sport or ADV. They fit goggles and/or a visor. Good air flow at low speeds and they look right for a KLX. Street helmets look goofy on enduros and you'll be breathing in your own breath over and over unless you're at top speed.
>>
>>28826412
One downside, the bill on those helmets sucks at highway speed. All of them put some amount of lift at the forehead proportional to the bill size, and some models will start to vibrate and make a racket at higher speeds.

i ultimately decided to go with a dirt bike helmet. instead of taking the helmet right back to the store i just lifted the face shield up and used some goggles. it's actually not a big deal for riding around town. when the mx helmet gets here i'm gonna take back this adv one.

>ive got money to spend on my bike
K so get a cheap shitter instead of a 12k noob bike new, and everytime you drop it and replace fairings again and again, let us know how many times it takes
Rather than n+1 and -12000 right off the hop youll be n+1 and -4500 or 5500 and have a budget for actually working on it instead of ruining your insurance
Do you also just buy cars and wreck them and have insurance take care of it?
Thats not what insjrance is for, and as a new rider your crasher are objectively broaching the range of disaster, diasbility, and death
Thats 3 inches of D you never got elsewheres in life anon
Trust the shoom
Buy tw200 and stop being a nobike nooblet

>I was also looking at getting a KTM 390 but they dont seem to be reliable
I own a 2021 model and its a good bike, nothing truly amazing but for my case that I live outside of the main town, it does everything I need pretty well. 390 ADV R is now closer to a true ADV category, the older 19in front wheel is more of a adventure sport, and you need a couple mods to make it more comfy for offroad use, like changing footpegs as a first, among others. Good thing about these is that there's plenty of them used for cheap, so I would suggest you give it a look locally if you got luck to find a good deal, I payed for mine like 4K USD, yet mine was no more than 600miles, pretty much new.
ZX4RR sucks in price/performance, its better to pick the ZX6R or RR instead, but sadly Kawasaki had a lot of recalls with these bikes. If you still want a Kawi, but not overpaying, just get the Ninja 500 or Z500, both are great.
Also there's the KLE 450 too, and I think that is the one I would personally buy if I wanted a bike brand new these days. 450MT/Ibex has so far, done quite well, but Chinkmoto keeps changing the models, so that doesn't give me a good expectancy of their bikes, specially with service in the future.
>>28825892
Also any bike that this anon said here is cool. 450 Guerilla from RE is possibly one of the best picks for a naked bike if you are a poorfag, or you can save it up for good gear.
picrel is mine, I should take newer ones of it, since I did more changes on it.
