>This is just Recurring Nightmare
No, Recurring Nightmare's one strength that none of its imitations have is that it's untouchable by non-counterspells. Because bouncing it back to hand is a cost, you can do it right after it hits the battlefield, before anyone can try to Disenchant it.
Chthonian Nightmare's ETB trigger lets the opponents destroy/exile it before you can use it.
>>
>>97864719
I forgot to add that, of course, Nightmare's primary strength is that it's doable with 3 mana, so it's turn 3 reanimation, and with Dark Ritual, turn 1 or 2.
This new artifact can't do it. It's turn 3 play only if you got Llanowar Elves turn 1, Cauldron of Essence turn 2, turn 3 activate. Which gives the opponent a full turn to disrupt the plan.
While Recurring simply plops and does its job before anyone can do anything about it.

Are you ready for some heroes after Strixhaven anons?
>>
>>97865201
If they give me a Darkhawk card I'll be moderately happy. I expect nothing that good though. There's a lot of potentially good things that could come of it if you're into Marvel but I expect it'll just be "characters what was in the movies" mostly. We'll probably see a Danny Rand, which is something, though it seems like they're gonna give him a duo card with Luke because there was a Heroes for Hire art shown.

Dunno about favorite, there are several I like for their character design or because they did something cool at some point. Since nobody's said Sorin I guess I'll say Sorin. Although my reason for liking him isn't really that he's cool but rather that he's such a colossal bum who gets no respect from anyone. So it's less to do with his actual character and more how it's been utilized. He's fun that way.

>i loved the duskmourne arc for example
Good for you. I think it was fine, but I would have liked if more of the story had been told from the point of view of some of the plane's indigenous denizens instead. It's not so much a gripe with Duskmourn's story specifically, but it exemplifies it. I don't mind the more serialized storytelling and interconnected multiverse setting in principle, but it'd be nice if it was even possible anymore to get something more self-contained like the original Kamigawa, Guildpact or Lorwyn-Shadowmoor storylines.

Final SOS story, the Witherbloom side-story. https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/secrets-of-strixhaven-do wn-to-the-lake-alone
>Dina's leading some Witherbloom students who've found a weird dying bird, which she thinks looks kind of like somebody in a costume and the students seem too forcibly excited over
>A vampire in the group, Morphia, bites the dying thing to sample its blood and apparently also its thoughts, and Lorenin, whoever that is, asks her what it was doing, and Morphia basically says it's a gliding bird, it glided for a long ass time, and they get to work on figuring out this thing's deal
>A third student, Basil, an elf, is clearly far more queasy about seeing such a thing die, and Dina moves to comfort him over it
>She looks at Morphia and Lorenin and tries to figure out what the pair's deal is, comparing it to whatever she and Killian have going on and hoping they don't look as insufferable together as this pair does
>Basil urges them to hurry up, they have to get to the lake by nightfall
>We get some more exposition of what's going on, Basil's partner Mertyn died some time ago and it sent him into a bit of a depressive spiral which Dina tried to help him out with, and he seemed to be refusing to even commit to joining Witherbloom and such
>Lorenin says they'll see Mertyn soon enough, Basil says they're never going to see Mertyn, just 'something else'
>Morphia goes "we'll see him, learn what he has to say, then move on"
>Dina offers more comfort, how it's odd seeing somebody after they've died, which is a common thing for mages after all
>That doesn't quite work out and Basil gets quiet and just carries on down the path, leading the rest to awkwardly pack up and catch up while Dina curses herself for fucking that up
>A little later, they've got a shelter going and Dina's instructing the group to, when they see Mertyn's revenant, don't follow it alone

>There's some talk and banter after while Dina makes sure the shelter's all good, it's an old abandoned mobile lab
>And then there's a knock at the door, which feels like it's a common beat in these stories of idle conversation being interrupted by
>Lorenin goes to open it up while the others stay put, and hey it's Mertyn's ghost
>Mertyn's dressed the same as he was when he died in, apparently, a potions lab accident and he greets Lorenin like the old friend he is
>Lore immediately refutes going to the lake with him, but Mertyn tries to insist, talking about all the cool shit it has
>Lorenin eventually just shuts the door on him
>It's likely Mertyn will try again the next two nights, with Morphia and then Basil, so Lore just wants it over with and gets to bed
>Next day, they're off gathering ingredients and shit to pass the time, they find that bird again only to find it's decayed rapidly, which they discuss for a bit
>Back at the shelter for dinner and the knock comes again
>Mertyn talks to Morphia, and apparently won't even try to convince her to go to the lake this time, rather the revenant tries to convince her he really is the same Mertyn, telling her what she knows about him
>And Morphia isn't buying it, because it's more what it thinks she wants to hear rather than things he'd say
>Then he abruptly hugs her, whispers something in her ear, then she slams the door in his face
>Basil asks what he said, Morphia at first says nothing, but then says it was a plea to go to the lake to see a cool tree spirit that is constantly bleeding, but that was sort of a bad attempt to get her to come
>Morphia then says it feels like the revenant was missing something he had in life, and is clearly shaken nonetheless so Dina offers to make tea
>Next morning, Basil is gone, reading a book by the lake, and Dina joins him
>>
>>
>>
>>97865569
>Basil asks why she's here, if she wants to teach them something or if she's just wanting to capture this spirit
>Dina says it can be both, Basil asks why she wants to capture it
>She says to know, and also to protect people, because this thing HAS killed people before
>Basil asks if Dina thinks his group is weak for being so broken up by losing Mertyn when Dina and her cohort lost so much more in the Invasion
>Dina says no, then tries to explain that grief eats you up regardless, he asks when it ends, she says it doesn't, it only declines
>He doesn't want it to decline, she says there's no real choice, then they go to get breakfast
>And at night, the third knocking comes
>Mertyn looks ready to go on a date this time, and wordlessly extends a hand to Basil who himself takes it wordlessly and oop there they go
>Dina and the others immediately rush out after, getting to the lake and finding the two, heads in each other's arms while a shape arises from beneath the lake's waters
>Dina urges the two to save Basil, because apparently Willowdusk told her that she should take a step back during things like this, only stepping in if they needed it
>Aaand the Devotion, which the thing is called, has immediately frozen Morphia up to her ankles, burning Lorenin with vapor and Basil's stumbling onto the shore while Mertyn has, of course, vanished
>Morphia does something with a talisman to melt the ice, the Devotion sends huge waves against her
>Lorenin's kind of just tanking the waves and keeps trying to push forward, Morphia gets to his side, pulls something out of his robe, and they do something together with what's apparently some volcanic rock
>But then the Devotion just sort of picks them up and separates them, and Dina is about to intervene when Basil sends out a burst of raw magic at the thing
>The Devotion falters and seems to be defeated or dead and falls back to the lake after that
>>
>>
>>
>>97865603
>The sample they got is the skull it had, the only physical part amidst an otherwise elemental body
>Dina's back making tea while the gang all gets dried up and basically says she wasn't trying to teach them, she was trying to get them to learn
>She's about to start a lecture to Basil who cuts her off, saying he's heard enough lectures about death being part of life by now
>So instead Dina tells him a story, about the Brittleblight, the plague that destroyed her home, the thing she cured
>She wasn't able to cure it because she's a genius, she did it because she devoted herself to doing it, and basically says for all that, she's still standing, and learning to live life with all that is part of what Witherbloom is all about
>The maybe-couple of Lorenin and Morphia show some minor affection while Basil just sort of awkwardly drinks his tea, then asks what the Devotion had to teach them, and Dina says she doesn't know, but it seemed to be grieving too
>Next morning, Dina finds the three out at the lake, Basil holding the Devotion's skull and about to return it to the lake, and Dina remembers Willowdusk teaching her about that she might lose students through no fault of her own, that they've learned all she can teach
>And Basil says he just doesn't want to be a mage anymore, and he puts the skull back, looks at the three of them, gives a nod and walks away

Probably the most boring of them all. Red and Black are the best because they give you value by themselves. Green and Blue need you to have a board already going, and White needs you to have relevant cards in your graveyard.
>>
>>97866458
You say this but realistically what would YOU be doing if you were told to make 1800 cards every year?

and now your Hasbro overlords have taken you aside and put you on a PEP to make 2100 cards next year. If you don't do it you're fired.

Well yeah. We complained about themepark sets like Innistrad, so they came up with hat sets like Thunder Junction, and people got nostalgic for Innistrad. We complained about hat sets, so they came up with UB. Only natural people want to hit the "fuck go back" button to an era that looks less shite by comparison.

A few threads ago, I, Monkman, was mocked for hoping there were monks in nuLorwyn. I want to take this opportunity to say fuck you to those people. Here are two bits of official Lorwyn lore on monks. I even used the example of treefolk monks. Fuck you people.
>Adair River Span. Eschewing weapons, Adair River Span is a mighty oak monk who wanders the forests seeking out opportunities for proving his prowess in combat. Stories are told of how he once fought two giants at once, reducing both to tears, one with his fists, the other with his insults. It's said that on a bet he once dipped his roots into the Honeystone River and drank it dry. Adair is a good friend of Flann and is currently seeking her. He doesn't know that Fionnsutha has take over the mantle of The Wanderer.
>The Ember Fell Monastery
Using the borrowed power, she flew to the place of her birth, the Mount Tanufel. Here she was attacked by the flamekin monks of Ember Fell monastery, who asked her to enter the order and make her ascension in the Path of Flame properly. Ashling refused, and the monks animated a huge stone titan to fight with her. With the unexpected help from Colfenor's sapling and the groundling fae under the leadership of Endry, the giant was bound to the ground. Later, she freed the giant again to attack the monastery itself. The leader of Ember Fell let the giant crush the walls and gates, then obliterated him. He repeated that Ashling must undergo a certain ritual to ascend on her path properly.

The hardest deckbuilding pill to swallow is that you should play netdecks for your format of choice until you have a solid grasp of what a deck needs to be capable of doing to be able to compete, and only then should you start brewing. Always ask yourself how your deck is going to beat the top 6 or so decks in the format.

Sup faggots I’ve been off the chans for a few years as x has been remarkably good and I’ve been busy with real life. These captchas are fucking awful.
So, I think I have a problem with hoarding cards. I think I have like tens of thousands in sealed cardboard now and I live in a retardedly high sales tax state and I think I should learn how to start selling I guess.
I preordered a shitton and holy shit I’m realizing I’m completely obsessed. Damn.
So why does Rudy sound so spooked all of a sudden? And how do his patrons rationalize the massive fuck you of “im not even going to offer TMNT collectors because suddenly im bothered by whining on the internet.” And why is every other mtg YouTube channel a complete homosexual degenerate worshipper of mentally ill troons?
So funny that they’re still calling Rowling genocidal and fascist.

Don't overthink his retardation. He's making a joke out of contempt for WoTC's version of baby yoda. Due to their long production times though by the time we got Loot people were already sick of baby Yoda. Shows just how quickly Disney shit out slop that in the time they'd taken to finish the set Disney had already fucked up the only decent star wars show they had. And frankly Mandalorian was just a generic western but because it wasn't woke DEI filled slop it was amazing in comparison. They have of course remedied that and emasculated any trace of masculinity out of the show. Fuck Disney, fuck WoTC, fuck the woke mind virus, FUCK THIS WHOLE FUCKING CLOWN WORLD SHIT!!!!!

Discounting some of the emotional beats hit by Chandra and Ajani, yeah, that's basically the sum of what the plot is about. The episodes read a lot like setup for Reality Fracture. The crisis involving the archaics doesn't so much tell the reader where the story is going to go as it informs the reader about the stakes at play and what will be motivating the characters in the next arc. SOS is by no means a self-contained storyline.

Prepare is quite interesting.
From what I gather when a creature becomes prepares a copy of the spell becomes exiled until it is cast. Any permanent can cast a prepared spell as long as it was prepared. If a copy prepared a spell but stops being that creature it will still be able to cast the prepared spell.

>>
>>97871467
The mechanic changes the comp rules, it's that simple. The ability says it keeps it in exile. SBA delete non-cards in exile, but they can very easily add a caveat of "unless another ability is keeping it exiled".
Also, copies absolutely can be in exile. They are usually created and then immediately cast from there, but there's no rule saying they cannot be there at all.
Actually, I'm looking at the comp rules and I see literally nothing saying non-cards can't be in exile.
>>
>>
>>97871481
>>97871489
No, because they're not cards.
>>
>>
>>97871500
Then what are they? Spells can only exist on the stack. Is this an entirely new object type or some dumbass retard shit like that?
What the fuck is wrong with these people. This is completely fucking pointless. Just make it a function of the Creature game object holy fuck. "If prepared, it can copy this spell" like it's not that fucking hard why are we obliterating the comprehensive rules when we literally just don't have to.
>>
>>97871501
There's literally nothing wrong with prepare in the comp rules unless you're just misinterpreting them wildly. Prepared spells are objects.
>109.1. An object is an ability on the stack, a card, a copy of a card, a token, a spell, a permanent, or an emblem.
Objects can exist in exile.
>406.1. The exile zone is essentially a holding area for objects. Some spells and abilities exile an object without any way to return that object to another zone. Other spells and abilities exile an object only temporarily.
They're not tokens, because tokens are only permanents. They're spells that exist on their own.
>>
>>
This is fucking retarded.
You literally just don't have to put a fake game object into exile. It is completely unnecessary. You already have named tokens (Tarmogoyf, Mutavault etc.) you already fucking wrenched the comprehensive rules in half to do that. Why are we doing it again? Just use the fucking shit you already fucked up you absolute fucking idiots.
>>
>>97871457
Ah yeah that was a thing. Like you said it didn't really come up as obvious outside that one scene, and then later when he makes a brief mention of taking his grandfather's name. But come to think of it Dina said she'd been informed there were only girls in the group, so there was a little foreshadowing.
>>
>>
>>
>>97871514
That's literally wrong. Now, the rule you MIGHT be referring to is this:
>704.5e If a copy of a spell is in a zone other than the stack, it ceases to exist. If a copy of a card is in any zone other than the stack or the battlefield, it ceases to exist.
Which, as written, does make prepare not work. But guess what. They can do a thing called "adding rules". A lot of mechanics breaks the baseline rules in some way, and thus they'll have their own section in the comp rules for that.
>>
>>97871530
>Which, as written, does make prepare not work.
Yes. Correct. Prepared does not work. The copy ceases to exist. End of discussion.
>They can do a thing called "adding rules".
This is universally the wrong decision.
Can does not equal should. Is does not equal ought. The state of it being technically possible to do something retarded does not negate you being a retard if you actually go out and do it.

>>

>>97871564
The comp rules will be updated to allow that to happen. It's not hard to figure out. Either 704.5e will change to include "so long as nothing is maintaining it" or something, or prepare will say "this ignores state-based actions removing the spell for as long as the creature exists and is prepared".

Well, for one, it allows it to work with cast triggers. They could've probably made it so the copy is only created when you decide to cast the prepared spell but I assume they figured it was easier to roll it together with the prepared status or some such, I dunno the reason.

I have not even the slightest fucking clue. This shit is trivial to figure out. It is, in fact, how the game universally functions and there isn't ANY mechanical reason to deviate from it. The game already has named tokens so you wouldn't even need to write out what the spell does for it to function in the current rules. Garth One-Eye is already a fucking card. There is NO REASON to fucking ass blast the comprehensive rules like this.

I'm sure there's some reason. Like, okay, you want prepare spells to be cast for cast triggers to matter, sure, synergises with Opus/Repartee and whatnot. It is a little odd that prepared isn't just "giving you permission to cast the associated spell", it's "creating the spell which you may then cast".

guys you'll never believe what they did, they added a mechanic that completely breaks the fundamental rules of how creatures have always worked. the game will be fucking ruined when this new set comes out

THE CREATURE IS PREPARED.
Fuck just make it a fucking Suspect-like boolean state.
>"If thing is prepared, you can un-prepare it to cast X."
IT'S A GLORIFIED FUCKING CHARGE COUNTER SPENT ON ACTIVATED ABILITIES FOR FUCK SAKE LMAO THIS SHIT IS SO FUCKING RETARDED JUST PUT A FUCKING CHARGE COUNTER ON THE FUCKING CREATURE AND GIVE IT AN ACTIVATED ABILITY HOLY FUCK HAHAHA

Oh, one possible explanation might be that if a prepared creature becomes a copy of something else with prepare, it maintains its original prepare spell instead of being able to cast the new one. That's probably the reason why it's like that.
>>
WotC should change the comprehensive rules to allow for whipping out my dick and slapping permanents off the table with it to be the equivalent of exiling them.
If they change the rules to allow it, then it's a good thing, right?

Yes but altering the state of a creature on the battlefield should strip that creature of things it previously had access to.
This is not a problem. There is no reason to even ATTEMPT to solve this issue.

Well prepared is similar to monstrous, in that it's a non-copiable value that just sort of 'exists' on a creature. A monstrous creature becoming a copy of something else with monstrosity can't activate the new monstrosity. My assumption as to why prepared is similar is because they didn't want, say, a cheap and easily-prepared creature becoming a copy of something with more hoops and casting the more hard-to-get spell.

What these kinds of technical hangups tell you is not that you should hack the comprehensive rules apart in order to shoehorn it into your game.
What this tells you is that Prepared is a bad idea and you should not be pursuing its design space.

>Non-Card objects can exist in exile now.
I genuinely could not have even imagined this being something that WotC could fuck up.
Things previously not even in consideration for fuckup territory are on the table now.

A) Bad idea to have that work.
B) Why would this ever be needed?

its a copied spell so you can counter it with a normal counterspell rather than a stifle, the weird rules stuff I don't care about, the copy of the spell is on the card so you copy that. its in the "on the creature" zone

the Angrath trivia is something that I wish was more prevalent in the stories
most of the 'walkers on walk near other 'walkers, but because they're so rare a common person seeing someone disappear with a crsckle of lightning will definitely vause some ruckus. None of them are even subtle about it, they just disappear and reappear wherever and whenever.

Yes they have. A copy is created in the same zone as the thing it's copying unless otherwise specified. Anything that exiles something and creates a copy to then cast is creating a copy in exile.
>>
>>97871677
>A copy is created in the same zone as the thing it's copying unless otherwise specified. Anything that exiles something and creates a copy to then cast is creating a copy in exile.
That is literally just not correct at all.
A copied permanent is created on the battlefield. A copied spell is created on the stack.

No. Image limit has been reached, but the card Chandra, Pyromaster, whose third ability is "exile the top ten cards of your library, choose an instant or sorcery exiled this way and copy it three times, you may cast the copies" has this relevant ruling. This card is from 2014 by the way.
>While resolving the third ability, you create the copies of the card in exile and cast them from exile. You can cast zero, one, two, or all three copies. The card itself isn't cast. It remains exiled.
>>
>>
>>97871685
nta but in the example of Arcane Bombardment there's clearly a moment where the copy has been created by the enchantment and the enchantment's controller has a choice of whether or not to cast it.
A spell that hasn't been cast yet can't possibly be on the stack, so where is the copy located while the player is making the decision of whether to use Arcane Bombardment's "may" trigger?
>>
>>
>>97871700
Elite Arcanist is similar.
>The copy is created in and cast from exile. You must still follow any timing restrictions, such as "Cast [this spell] only during combat."
Non-cards have been able to exist in exile. SBAs usually delete them afterwards, yes. But prepare specifically puts a holder on that. It's not that significant of a change.
>>
>>
>>97871709
That's state-based actions, which only take effect when a player gains priority. SBAs are ignored during the resolution of an ability, like Chandra's ability. Prepare is different, yes, by letting it prolong its stay, but its staying is still contingent on the creature being prepared and being on the field.
>>
>>97871709
damn anon you're a genius, I guess every single one of these cards just doesn't fucking work

if any of those said "until end of turn you may cast" then yeah but you have to cast them immediately so no sba get to kill them since the ability is still resolving
>>
>>
>>
>>97871742
Correct. Prepare IS unique, as I said, by allowing the copied spells to exist for longer. This appears to be a unique function of prepare, making the copied spell's existence in exile tied to the associated creature. As to why prepare isn't just "create and cast a copy" in the same action? Probably for, as I said, avoiding an easy-to-prepare creature becoming a copy of another thing with more difficulty and cheesing out a more valuable spell.

Interesting, they're doing more of these. I might pick them up desu, relatively cheap way of having a couple more decks to play with my mum.
