I think Andrew Probert got a little over-enthusiastic when he designed the Ent-D with all of the lounge windows and rooms at impossible angles that we were never, ever going to see on screen. He didn't even come up with Ten Forward, the producers did. When he saw where it was going to be on the leading saucer edge he got mad because it's not what he intended.

What's supposed to be in the neck section on the Galaxy class? Are these crew quarters? They would be pretty narrow.
>>
>>217639045
considering the gigantic size of the ship there are any number of facilities that could be in the neck, gyms, pools, idk fucking tennis courts, plenty of room for all kinds of things

They're beneath the break for the saucer separation, so I'd doubt it

I don't like this idea that the Galaxy class would start being phased out and replaced in only 20 years. It feels like something "those" type of people came up with.

I remember when they released that Stage 9 game mapping out the ship, it really opened my eyes to the retarded scale of the Enterprise. Like, the shuttlebay we always saw was the smallest one on the ship while the main shuttlebay took up nearly an entire two decks and the sickbay we always saw was also the smallest one on the ship while the real sickbay was like a small fucking hospital
>>
>>217639336
It's like I said here >>217638941 they really didn't take into account the limited TV budget for sets, but it is fun to look at the deck plans and imagine whole parts of the ship we never see, like the park that's supposed to be inside the saucer section. We do see the Arboretum, and it's implied that the park is "just around the corner" or on another deck.
>>
>>217639410
>>217639336
it's the opposite problem with nutrek where they want to fit these giant expansive sets inside the TOS 1701 which really was only meant to be less than 300 meters long

So sort of just copying my question from the tail end of the last thread but the 1701 E... does it divulge too much from the comfy cadillac design ethos of the TNG show and stray too far into "modern badass sleek" or do you like it? I personally think it's pretty sweet. But there is a fine line between that iconic saucer/nacelle star trek design and just going full sleek space ship

Doctor Who was cancelled in part due to ratings, and in part because Disney didn't know what to make of the franchise. I heard BBC essentially tricked them into picking it up by lying about the show. Disney backed out as soon as they could. They're not even promoting the spinoff as a Doctor Who story.

I watched the VOY pilot last night and it was funny to think about how Kurtzman's crack team of "modern writers" would handle the concept

In the actual episode, the Maquis have to join the Starfleet crew and adapt to its discipline and protocols but this would seem like outright fascism to modern "Trek writers". They're trying to turn Starfleet itself into a Guardians of the Galaxy crew so there is no way in HELL that they make the Maquis anything but the absolute heroes

If they wrote this pilot it would end up with the Starfleet crew having to join the Maquis terrorists to "freedom fight" their way back from the Delta Quadrant and all of the Starfleet characters would have to learn how to "rise above the hate" of their "militaristic, fascist doctrine" and "embrace love" or some such nonsense.
>>
>>217642418
also S1E6 "The Cloud" confirms the funny rumor that the VOY writers thought "Harry Kim" was a Chinese name, as at the start of the episode, Janeway encounters Kim in the mess hall and Kim shares some of his ancient Chinese wisdom in the form of an "ancient Chinese curse".
>>
Guys, my Nick Mullen holoprogram went rogue and is going around doing the Harry Kim voice again.
>>
>>217642443
He's Korean.
>>
>>217642516
Kim is a Korean name, but the character is Chinese.
>>
>>217642418
DS9 wouldn't even be made under Kurtzman because the premise is not appealing to women. Don't get me wrong, plenty of women love DS9 including myself. But NuTrek wants at least a 50% female audience. I'd wager DS9 is 70-90% male viewers.
>>
>>217642516
Wang himself has said (lol Wang) that they initially thought Kim was Chinese and he had to tell them that it was a Korean name and it's what got him on the hot seat with the writers

The timeline matches up too

Watch S1E6, the Chinese curse bit. It's before the opening credits even. It's very much written like "Chinese guy offers some ancient wisdom to the captain" and it makes no sense for a Korean guy to do that.

Cause and Effect is fucking awesome but holy hell it seems like a huge design oversight that all it takes is one little nick on your warp nacelle and the entire core goes critical and your ship fucking explodes as a medium-sized scale model packed full of pyrotechnics lol
>>
>>217639266
>I don't like this idea that the Galaxy class would start being phased out and replaced in only 20 years
If you think about it, the Galaxy class was a huge expensive piece of shit built from a basic idea that was really stupid, from a time when Starfleet was almost suicidally smug and complacent
They put civilians, including children, on an exploration vessel in a paradise future where that was basically the only way to get children killed. The ship was vastly oversized in order to hold families and children so they could get killed, and they tended to explode after taking what was usually pretty light damage. Every time you see a Galaxy needing to eject the giant antimatter bomb inside it, for example, it fails and the ship blows up.
Objectively they were a huge failure, doing nothing that a smaller ship could've done better and safer other than looking cool

That doesn't mean the Galaxy class is a wash.

It just needed a refit. Remove civilians, add weapons and defensive systems in all of the space you just opened up.
It's not like it would be complicated to turn a Galaxy-class into a full on dreadnaught battelship.

>>217642925

But seriously, other than looking cool what did a Galaxy do that half a Galaxy couldn't do better, while being easier to construct and not endangering the lives of hundreds of civilians for no reason whatsoever
Imagine building that without even a passive safety system for the warp core-antimatter pod stack

>>
>>217643070
>add weapons and defensive systems in all of the space you just opened up.
But then you don't need a gigantic flying city to contain its infinity interior space that you're no longer using, and you could just build the same defenses and weapons around a much more compact package
>>
>>217643118

>TOS was never a "sci-fi adventure," it was a cerebral Twilight Zone style concept show.
Absolutely retarded take
>bb-b-but what about this one heavy handed lecturing epsiode that everyone actually hates
Star Trek was a sci-fi western. Half the episodes have fistfights. The episodes everyone actually likes tend to be naval combat, and one of the very best is a straight up ripoff of a WW2 submarine movie. Nimoy had to invent the nerve pinch and thus the entire psychic powers of the Vulcan race because he was bored with a script that had him knocking out some guy with the butt of his gun. Real Twilight Zone stuff.
Jesus, for a good number of the episodes the "concept" was "we're running out of money so figure out some story that lets us use the Roman Empire/gangster/Nazi sets and costumes in the warehouse"

>>217644400
I don't really see the 'sci-fi adventure' thing as particularly relevant but I agree that ENT feels the most similar to TOS. I think it's mainly due to NX-01 being portrayed as an actual tightly-run military vessel, and the fact that there is no real galactic infrastructure where you can just 'call in reinforcements' when you get in trouble. TOS had starbases and a other ships but they were similarly spread thin so it felt like Enterprise was mostly doing its own thing on the frontiers
>>
>>217644724
Granted VOY also has no reinforcements but the feel of the ship itself is very different compared to TOS and ENT and has more of a Galaxy Class atmosphere
>>

Not true. That was the case, but recently they've shifted back to oldtrek stuff for episodes, and one of them has You and MirrorYou chuck Killy into a disintegration field, clearly showing the dev's disdain for those characters. Even more recent then that has episodes completely void of nutrek characters.

this is about right. TOS and ENT operate under the premise that only the best of the best of the best are allowed to explore deep space. TNG DS9 and VOY is more like replicators and holodecks get boring after awhile so we might as well continue exploring deep space, anyone who wants to come along is welcome.
>>
>>217644812
TOS is nearly as much in the horror genre as the scifi genre, so it's not surprising other defining terms wouldn't fit it perfectly either. In that regard, TOS truly stands alone as undefinable and ineffable.

This isn't exactly contradictory because there are still tons of morality play episodes even if they aren't the ones people like

Maybe I'd go for "when TOS was great, it was usually a sci-fi adventure show, and when it was awful it was usually a morality play or social commentary"

The presenation is very different. TOS tells a new story every episode and barely ties them together. ENT tells one story about a bunch of crazy shit that happens before it all gets erased to align with TOS

No, I don't think it was. If Jadzia stayed on the show and didn't die, maybe she gets 1 (singular) episode in S7 which leaves way more room for them to actually use interesting characters like Dukat, Garak, Martok, Kai Winn, etc. If she died and stayed dead, 0.

Instead, we get a bunch of awful-to-mid-tier Ezri episodes to try and justify bringing in a new character in your final season. That's what they were explicitly going for, too, even structuring the character focus on a TOS-style triumvirate rather than the TNG-DS9-VOY ensemble cast. I think there were a bunch of episodes where Malcom or Hoshi or Travis didn't even have a line

I wish they had done a little more with Kira living with the O'briens. Her and Miles starting to catch feelings for each other was interesting as a very human story about proximity and intimacy with peers, but Nerys learning more about the daily lives of Federation citizens and how it might affect her feelings on Bajor joining the Feds could have made for some good stories.

Unironically yes. If the whole theme of DS9 was an examination of what happens with a utopian society like the Federation is faced with dilemmas that can't be hand waved away through technobabble or flying away to the next planet, then one of the most important things to do would be to show how civilians like Keiko behave in those circumstances and not just people in the exploratory/military arm of the Federation which is Starfleet. Keiko wasn't a bitch, she just didn't have enough storylines she could engage in where she wasn't coming into conflict with Miles.
>>

Dealing with Curzon's stuff is all that made her interesting. Otherwise she'd just be a female version of Bashir: young and inexperienced Starfleet officer.

I was thinking something along the lines of the DS9 crew discovers that Ketracel White can be more easily fabricated by sort of being incubated inside of specially bred plants from the Gamma Quadrant. Keiko, being a highly skilled botanist, becomes closely tied to the ethical dilemma of providing the Jem'Hadar a source of white not controlled by the Vorta and whether that could potentially fracture their loyalty to the Dominion.

/tv/ Community Complaint

We want to raise an ongoing concern shared by multiple users regarding the state of discussion on /tv/, specifically around long-running general threads.

Over time, a number of generals — including Pluribus, Alien Earth, Stranger Things, Star Trek, and others — appear to be relying on post bots or artificial reply inflation to maintain prominence. This practice distorts organic engagement, crowds out genuine discussion, and gives a misleading impression of community interest.

Because of this, many users feel that allowing generals to continue after the end of the month would further erode the quality of the board. The request being made is straightforward:

That general threads no longer be allowed going forward

That discussion return to individual, topic-focused threads driven by real participation

That artificial boosting, intentional or otherwise, be addressed transparently

This complaint isn’t about targeting specific fandoms, but about preserving fair visibility and authentic conversation on /tv/. Many of us would prefer a board where threads rise or fall based on actual interest, not automated activity.

Submitted in good faith by concerned users.

What the hell did you just say about me, you little Pakled? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class at Starfleet Academy, and I’ve been involved in numerous classified training simulations, and I have over 300 confirmed holodeck completions.
I am trained in zero-G combat, xenolinguistics, and temporal ethics, and I’m the top cadet in my entire cohort. You are nothing to me but another entry in my personal log.
I will out-debate you with a level of Federation-approved precision the likes of which has never been seen on this quadrant, mark my words. You think you can get away with saying that on subspace? Think again, ensign.
As we speak, I am contacting my network of instructors, admirals, and slightly disappointed Vulcan professors, and your academic record is being reviewed right now, so you’d better prepare for the inquiry. The inquiry that wipes out the pathetic little reputation you call your posting history.
You’re on report, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can cite Starfleet regulations in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just from memory.
Not only am I extensively trained in diplomatic conflict resolution, but I have access to the entire Federation database, and I will use it to its full extent to politely but thoroughly dismantle your argument.
If only you could have known what interstellar consequences your “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have checked your tone.
But you couldn’t. You didn’t. And now you’re facing remedial ethics training.
