Newfag slowly getting through TNG and it's finally found it's stride and I find the show incredibly comfy. These characters feel like friends and family that I've come to know and I enjoy the little stories no matter how silly they are. Data best boy for now but there is no one I really dislike.
Thank you for reading my blog and I'm looking forward to getting into DS9 and Voyager once I finish this and the TNG movies.

Wow the First Contact theme really is so good. I almost wish it didn’t start out with the little TNG music motif; it works so well as its own theme. This could be the intro to a new Trek if they wanted to

Geordi knows what it's like to be an outcast and he uses that empathy to reach out to other outsiders. The show trusts you to understand this so it doesn't beat you over the head through dialogue.

Yeah once you dig your heels in it becomes so kino. Not that S1 is bad by any means, but once it starts really ramping up and riker grows the beard it’s such a treat. Every episode treats you with thrilling stories and good characters and it’s fun seeing how the crew handles the situations that get thrown at them and how they interact with eachother, and you start day dreaming about working at starfleet aboard a beautiful Galaxy-class ship

Yeah I’m on s3 and honestly i had to skip a large part of s1+2 because it was just stupid and not enjoyable stupid. I’m now pretty much watching every episode and liking it all. I think also I’ve not come to appreciate the show for what it is and not what I expected it which helps.

Have you ever watched trek? I’m pretty sure they explicitly address this in TOS or TNG lol. Something about higher officers busting their ass to be in charge therefore they want to be the first to make potential discoveries on the ground of strange new worlds

To anyone wondering where the dislike bar is, Youtube removed it years ago but there's a popular extension that mimics the functionality. What you're looking at is the ratio of people that installed the extension and then disliked it versus people that clicked like on Youtube.

If nothing else then the fact that Kirk went on away missions with the boys all the time. If he ever insisted Spock or Scotty stay aboard because someone had to be on the ship in case he was killed or captured it was at his discretion and not citing some protocol.

You can’t do the same thing in perpetuity the already had issues with TNG and DS9 and VOY and wanted to move on to a new premise, and additionally yes I think you misunderstand how many people actually, unfortunately, have been enjoying STD and SNW and PIC and now SA. Not everyone is filled with hate, a bunch of people are actually filled with blind love for this new bullshit and there’s no pressure or a huge fan base writing letters demanding change.

Nerdy white autistic guys were soft banned from writers rooms in 2010 and hard banned in 2020. There's a chart floating around showing how white males have become an increasingly small part of television production. That's why there hasn't been any good sci-fi television in decades. And why so many recent shows are from a female perspective about female anxieties.

>Attention Bajoran workers… very often during my first tenure as station gul I was a prophet and was mostly derided. At the time of my struggle for power, it was in the first instance the Bajoran people who only greeted with laughter my prophecies that I would someday take over the leadership of Cardassia and of the entire Union and then, among other things, also bring the Bajoran problem to its solution. I believe that this hollow laughter of Bajor in our newly annexed Dominion territories has already stuck in its throat. I want today to be a station gul again: if Federation-Bajoran saboteurs inside and outside the the station should succeed in plunging the Alpha Quadrant once more into war, the result will be not the Bajoranisation of Cardassia and thereby the victory of hasperat, but the annihilation of the Bajoran race on Terok Nor!

I’ve said it before but Star Trek is only getting fixed if by some miracle CBS appoints a racist, misogynistic white dude to be in charge. Better for some hard ass to be like “I should challenge myself and offer the fans good characters like Uhura or Geordi” versus a room of self-flagellating dorks trying to just reinforce their own retarded political ideas down the throat of everyone

Sharing this here since the last thread archived without getting much traction. I found a VHS recording of a 1992 airing of The Search for Spock and you can download it here: https://gofile.io/d/micHjx
There are no deleted scenes added to pad out the runtime or anything, but it has some interesting instances of edits made to trim scenes and keep the movie moving along quicker. I made some side-by side comparisons of a few scenes I found especially interesting here:

Or it could be way more generous, perhaps a lot of people who had the extension installed also swayed to not liking and downvoting. It’s never going to be representative of true data and it’s hard to know how close it is to approximating the real deal.
I hate youtube so much it’s unreal. They do nothing but further fuck up the site but the world is too stubborn to jump ship to a new alternative. Google has a monopoly on this shit bc youtube had insane and lasting first mover advantage

blogposting again, but I just finished S3E7 'The Enemy'. Really enjoyed it and good to get some background and on Federation/Romulan relations. I liked Worf's dilemma and refusal about helping the prisoner and Picard's extreme disappointment in him but not that he would force Worf to do something he wouldn't want to. Good stuff and I liked Geordi and the Romulan working together and also what is the pont of Troi? She said nothing this episode and I find her the most boring of the main characters so far.

I think you'll find that even though TNG is great, there are a lot of times where they didn't really know what to do with Troi, Beverly and Geordi
It's not that they're bad characters, they just aren't given a whole lot to do compared to Riker, Picard and Data.
(this is something that DS9 is a lot better about imo, the entire cast of DS9 has a lot of depth and conflict and interesting character traits)

no, I'm not convinced of that at all. I don't think he really cares about individual show performance -- it's been proven that streaming services don't give a shit about that as much as the big picture.
Ellison is probably just looking at the numbers, seeing Landman carrying the whole streaming service on its back and says, "Good," and then moves on to one of the other many interests he manages with his billions other than P+

If they take the mean average of every show on CBS All Access and then say "Welp, it's turning a profit. Well done boys" then they can overlook a giant money sink. 5 of them. If there is any kind of analysis being done on the individual shows then there is no way that they can turn these numbers into the assertion that Kurtzmantrek is bringing in viewership.
This is gross incompetence or a money laundering scheme. These are the only two theories that make any sense and I say this because of basic math.

Like DS9, it was never as popular as TNG which was a cultural hit. Voyager also has a near enough completed story from beginning to end plus the later TNG movies flopped which made studios hesitant I imagine.

Is this episode really the worst? Its just a basic cultural misunderstanding episode. I guess it has an old fashioned pulp perspective on foreign cultures but its so diluted that i dont really see how it could be called offensive. Replace the actors with a diverse cast and it wouldnt be as negatively seen. Its a retread for sure but not the worst thing ive seen.

I find the treatment of Klingons in STD and SA to be way more offensive than Code of honor personally
Even in SA if the story is that the Klingon Empire fell and came apart, the idea that they would go from interstellar empire to a bunch of people wearing animal skins hunting with fucking bows and arrows is so goddam insulting when paired with an apparent push to try and make every Klingon played by a black person.

Well other anons did some digging and found that kuntsman is married to a lawyer, a lawyer who just so happens to own a shell company that, as luck would have it, just so happens to deal with all the finances at the studio.
This includes payroll and contractors. So the next time you ask "why did this cost $20million" or "who needs 25 co-producers" it's money laundering. So no, paramount won't fire him. He saves them tens of millions via Jewish coin shaving. Any "loss" he generates with his vanity projects is wildly offset by the tax savings and quarterly bonuses

There's another episode where Worf is carrying an unconscious Data and it's clearly a doll in a wig. I'm surprised that scene hasn't become a stock anti-TNG shitpost.

Alex Kurtzman claims "persecution" but is conveniently leaving out years of history leading up to this. He was initially invited here on good faith. We were promised an in depth exploration of Picard's character in his later years but we were given a rehashing of his encounter with The Borg which appears to be the one thing he knows about TNG with a dozen b-plots that went nowhere. I didn't say "money laundering" for the first 5 years but I have no idea what else to say at this point.

I suppose the Modus Operandi of star trek is
>I am Gene Roddenberry, I am providing a world in a post-scarcity society, don’t think about it too hard I can’t explain the specifics
But by the time of TNG is there still a sort of wealth system? I get that money isn’t a thing and especially by the time of replicators and holodecks you’re good to go, but what about prime real estate e.g. one of the best condos overlooking an Italian villa, a yacht, a well-to-do family with lots of power? How do these things still function? Inherited and trade on a case-by-case basis?

Correct. Elisons son and Skydance basically burns money to make forgettable trash.
One of his big movies back in the day was some forgettable WW1 airplane movie (Fly Boys IIRC) and it was a text-book example of taking every trope and tired-cliche and weaving it into 2 hours of meaninglessness.
He's probably had some other failures since then.
The internet often describes him as looking like the kind of guy who calls his dad at 2am panicking that he's killed another hooker. Kek.
But I judge people on the context of their character, not on physical attributes.
Will team Ellison be good for Trek? No, probably not.

How much dirt does Kurtzman have on Hollywood to be able to do this? How can someone hand this guy millions for a 7th time with nearly nothing to show for it?

so plan A for Kes was to have Voyager's journey take about 9 years and for her to die as an old old ocampa in the finale I guess
As dry as Kes was that would have been pretty cool, Seeing her all cherubic in the pilot to an old crone in the finale.
Would have been quite emotional dare I say.

Still boggles my mind that they didn't repeat what Locutus was if they needed an avatar for the Borg. The Queens were so shit. I remember, naively, thinking during Picard s3 that Locutus would be resurrected, but no, it was the mustache twirling cackling Queen again. Remember when Locutus literally asked Worf in bafflement why they resist? Because from the Borg's POV per TBOBW they were the good guys. You don't get that warped but sincere outlook with the Queen

Why do I find TNG-DS9 era Romulans so appealing? I am also now reminded of the sheer quality of actors they got for small roles. This motherfucker right here had the screen presence to play the arch villain of an extended arc pitting the Feds against the Romulans. William Sadler also killed it as Sloan. And Katsulas as Tomalak
>>
Idea:
>new antagonist called some shit like the Freehold of Worlds or whateverthefuckwhocares
>like the feds, the freehold formed with 4 different races coming together consensually - but in their fractured corner of the galaxy, when they did begin expanding, they incorporated in new worlds that did not conform after negotiation and peace overtures by defaulting to coercion, threats, and outright invasion - but said invasions were like Alexander at Guagamela - forcing a decisive single victory vs. terror campaigns
>the races that had the shit beaten out of them were then picked back up and had the dust and blood brushed off them by the freeholders and fully incorporated in
>can serve in the navy, have high political office, etc. and the freeholders have advanced mechanisms to ensure cultural assimilation
>by the time they encounter the fed, the new generation of freeholders have not for a generation even had to bring in a new world via violence because of prior generation's reputation - the threat of what they can do with a decisive victory is well known and, like the feds, they do turn planets into paradises.
>they are half as old as the federation but cover slightly more territory, have slightly better science/equipment in a few areas, create paradises. So can brag about how their way works
>not like the romulans/klingons where one race rules space and over client races or the twisted horror show that was the dominion
>but their expansion can rely on coercion, implied threats, and violence
>but they can be reasoned with so it's not all out war when they encroach on federation space
>the don't even want to take over the federation because it's too big but view them as competitors for new worlds to join their respective unions
Basically the feds, for once, face a reasonable ideological foe vs. feds but evil (terran, confederation) or empires where there is one specific race at the top dominating.

Hottest take ever incoming but while fucking cool in concept, the Borg ended up being really dumb and gay in execution and should have been contained to like 4 or 5 episodes max before being nuked out of existence. Sometimes flying by the seat of your pants in the writing room leads to watered down outcomes and you don’t always get hard-hitting lightning in a bottle
>>
>>217686119
They’re just pure scum bags. Not like Klingons, much more sinister and worse. Any time you give them the benefit of the doubt they always end up being calculating and cold and you’d wished you just cut their throats instead. I love it

If you had to go back to TBOBW the only real critiques would be the drones looking a bit shit here or there and having something adding to the idea of a collective intelligence, like when Picard has been kidnapped and is conversing with the Collective, the fucking drones in his area can be moving their mouths too and adding to the chorus. The way it plays out when they escort him, it's like they are mindless goons taking him to the big bad rather than actually linked to the intelligence

I like how having the first Romulan Starfleet officer (who is sincere about everything lol) should have been a character arc for someone and a historic moment but instead it's a throwaway thing in that shitty picard tv show wasted on a nonentity of a character called elnor. I can even imagine the guy who eventually becomes the first Romulan Starfleet officer initially being their liason (DS9 tried something in an episode or two with that lady who ran the generator for the loaned cloak device) and when he consents to wear a starfleet uniform after a certain point, he still has to spit in their faces by demanding HIS uniform have a green colour scheme and obvious romulan pins etc

Sometimes I'll be taking a shit and pondering things about Star Trek.
Like for example, the Borg. They are one, unified consciousness linked via subspace. So how does the collective designate? How does it give orders? There's only one mind. How do the "limbs" of the Borg operate, so to speak?
How are they like
>cube 4742 is off assimilating an advanced culture
>sphere 6767 is taking scans of a nebula
how does this work?

Well it works even better because Vulcans ARE assholes, but well-intentioned. So it's a good foil to be like "here is an even worse version, if you had any doubts."
I'm not sure what the fantasy scene was like around the 60s to the 80s when their lore was being developed and solidified (certainly high fantasy and dark fantasy wasn't as developed and tropey as it is now.) I imagine D&D and Lord of the Rings and a lot of fantasy tropes played into it though. Vulcans / Romulans ended up being a "pompous asshole regular elves" and "conniving truly untrustworthy dark elves" class, either deliberately or accidentally through convergent evolution of the lore.
>>217686506
The idea of Klingon diaspora is actually really interesting on paper. An honor-bound culture deeply obsessed with tradition and feudal loyalty suddenly robbed of the anchor that ties them together (ironically losing their home world through their own ignorance and greed). Too bad modern writers can't be trusted to do anything interesting with characters or races beyond gay relationships and quirk chungus marvel humor. It's a shame, really.

They would at least be having an internal civil war over half of them doing it and the other half being a faction of guerrilla antagonists trying to thwart a federation alliance and return to any semblance of klingon re-unification. But modern writers don’t want to offer anything interesting

zoomer faggots have discovered Star Trek. Youngfags are basically mining the past now that current year sucks. They find everything already systematized for their consumption by the oldfags that watched, evaluated and catalogued it all. A zoomer can bore to the bottom of a genre well in way less time and effort than at any time in history. I wonder what they will do when they speedrun all the good shit and have nothing left.
>>
>>217686734
You don't get it, dude. Dilithium all over the galaxy exploded simultaneously because some child (definitely not Franklin Richards from Marvel) cried really hard and this totally exploded the whole fucking Klingon Empire. Yes, they all lived together on the same planet and they all died at once, more or less, so now they're hunter/gatherers so Kurtzman can make a weird racist depiction of them and somehow get away with it.
Also just ignore alternative technologies like the Romulan singularity drive which is standard on all of their fucking ships or the slipstream tech or the transwarp tech that VOY got from the Borg, or anything they learned in the Delta Quadrant. Nope.

>In 3195, Ambassador Elim Garak's name was the sole name of someone who did not attend Starfleet Academy on a wall honoring luminary cadets and graduates from Starfleet Academy in the USS Athena
oh I hate that
What's the implication? He becomes a little lapdog for the federation post-war?
That's not the future I foresaw for Cardassia.
Humbled after being utterly devastated? Sure.
No Ambassador Garak though.
Even if the Fed + Cardassia became best buds, Garak being the olive branch is quite distasteful desu.

One of if not my favorite episode. You get Geordi, you get Romulans, you get Worf being a based dickhead, you get Picard working his talk-no-jutsu even if it fails to convince Worf, you get the thinly-veiled threats and sabre rattling between Tomalak and Picard, you get Wesley not being insufferable and actually being knowledgeable within the bounds of reason for his character, it's great.

I guess not, since you think you could have downloaded a bootleg concert film on Usenet at 56k dialup speed in the 1990s. Video capturing software that could compress full-length movies and computers that could run that weren't even invented yet. A full-length movie would have taken like two weeks 24/7 at that speed, if it was possible then. Which it was not.

>desperate unrealistic AI answer
Guy. You lost. Did you have any of that? Like, that tech would have been absurdly expensive and literally unrealistic unless you were Cisco. Was there dedicated torrents in the 90s? No? How about that server bandwidth that would host these 'archive' files? I downloaded a 20 second Quicktime video clip of MST3k in 1997 and was blown away that it only took 20 minutes. You should probably stop now. It's embarrassing for you.
>>
>>217687813
i said what i used usenet for and i used it for downloading multipart rar files containing bootleg concerts. no, not in the year 1994 or whatever you're hyperfocused on like that is the only time usenet ever existed.
>>
>>217687730
Yes, not to have bundled you in the reply, but this kid has no idea. The cost for even a 128kb connection was insane in the 90s. Not to mention: who would digitize and upload and host a "bootleg concert film" in the 90s? Bill Gates? Oh, the youth. So arrogant but so naive. Good on you, oldhead!
