Am I too cynical or whatever. But do people watch commercials like this and enjoy them? Because it is ostensibly trying to entertain. It is full of attempts at jokes. 'Will Shat', Star Trek parody, 'doody calls', 90+ year-old Bill Shatner do a pro-wrestler folding-table jump. These are all supposed to be funny. But, I can't imagine anyone anywhere even slightly smirking at them.

Ethan Phillips did it better anyway:

>>217688337
Run them in pairs, two are always shut down and on-standby. Used for more riskier missions. Quad-cores running all at the same time creates warp field instabilities and just won’t work unless the plot really, really needs it and your engineer can modulate alternating frequencies to make you go warp 12 for very, very brief periods to get out of a jam:
I am just basing this on complete head canon I just came up with on the spot

>>
>>217688337
tyranny of the rocket equation baka
>>
>>217688337
The honest answer is that we don't know. The nacelles themselves don't actually move the ship, it just warps space around it (hence the name). The only thing I can glean from the TNG tech manual is that two (in that configuration) allow for the best adjustments on the X and Z axis and is the most efficient design. Presumably, this means four would help the Y axis?

The weird thing is, it's not Epstein saying that. It's the other guy, Nikolic, who is apparently a 'brilliant' doctor who has done world-leading research in stem cells, is linked to the World Economic Forum. If you read about him and didn't know about any of the context, you'd think the guy was nearly a Starfleet-level evolved human doing all of this great stuff.

Turns out he's working for Section 31.

assuming something terrible happens in every single episode, that's still only like 24 times a year, which is less than 2 times a month, and even then something crazy happening like that isn't a guarantee. there's plenty of comfy and cozy episodes that dont involve the ship imploding

I dont know, man. If only one of those bad things happened even once a year it would be pretty traumatic imo.
Just imagine if you were a little kid playing in your room, the ship hits some "space anomaly" or is shot, ZERO warning and youre launched into a wall breaking a few bones while loud alarms start going off. That would fuck you up mentally going forward.
Makes me think of how one of our navy's submarines hit a sea mount without warning a while back (no deaths but several injuries) and it apparently traumatized the shit out of a bunch of sailors.

Here is a Star Trek episode plot (I will finish writing the script after Paramount buy the rights):

>A cabal of Ferengis. Working in conjunction with S31 agents
>Own a private moon orbiting Risa
>Elites from all over the quadrant gather on this moon for debauched parties
>Orion slave girls brutalised for their entertainment
>hidden holo-cameras capture their participation
>these elites go back home with a hangover. return to the office monday morning. Back to his job as Federation senator
>He gets a tap on the shoulder while standing at the water cooler. Its a smirking man. A S31 agent. The man shows the senator a PADD and plays a video
>blackmailed. The senator now votes the way he is told to and does as ordered
>this happens 100 different times
>The whole Federation is compromised. Corrupted
>Until a principled Starfleet captain uncovers the plot. Phasers all the bad guys into ash and saves the day

shuttlepods were never shown going to warp until STD (which I'm assuming is for a very good reason and is yet another thing they fucked up), which I'm assuming is why they don't have deflectors - you don't need one if you aren't traveling FTL and grains of sand aren't impacting your hull at superluminal speeds causing nuclear explosions that tear the ship apart

>shit reveal for the sake of it
I really like the Breen and the Borg, but these are clear examples of less is more. The Breen were more effective when they were masked and mysterious, similar to the Quarians from Mass Effect or the Mandalorians. Revealing their faces was a mistake that reduced their mystique. The Borg were far more terrifying when they felt eldritch and impersonal. The Collectors and the Zerg show how revealing too much can ruin an assimilating race, while the Tyranids and the Combine remain more mysterious and are better liked because of it.

They wanted to cast a French actor for Picard but forgot to make the character British when they cast Patrick Stewart. I think they tried to handwave it away by saying in the 24th Century all European countries had blended together.

all those years on Voyager, and nobody ever thought to ask Seven who Species 1 was?
How does the Borg begin?

I suppose any explanation would hamper how enigmatic they are so they thought to leave it.
But given you have a Borg encyclopedia at your disposal you'd have thought such information would be readily available by now.
>>
>>217695361
This also implies they ran into the Ferengi a long time before they encountered the vulcans and humans. Also ~2000 species between vulcan and humans.. where the vulcans keeping the borg a secret for the federation?

They were probably long-range pioneers just like 7's parents. 'All contact lost, cause unknown'.
>>
>>217695406
tbf the Vulcans achieved warp in the early 20th century as I recall
So they had about a 200 year headstart

Nevertheless there are only 16 light years between Earth and Vulcan and it's not like the Borg have any sort of noble prime directive.

On the other hand as Seven said about the Kazon, any species with inferior technology isn't assimilated.

Star Trek: First Contact is one of the laziest and dumbest movies ever.
The Borg simply rush to Earth, ignoring the fact that the United Federation of Planets consists of over 150 species, many of which presumably have multiple colonies.
It also ignores that the Federation was already heavily militarized due to the events of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

TNG newfag blostposting with another episode. I just finished 'The Defector' and I loved it. It was a good follow up to 'The Enemy' which I watched yesterday and enjoyed just as much. The Romulans being sneaky shits are great but I enjoyed the suspense of is the admiral a spy, giving fake information? Or is he actually defecting? The reveal where he's doing what he thinks is for the best for his family, knowing he will never see them again, was a nice touch but then finding out it was all built upon a lie and he doomed himself for nothing was sad.

I enjoyed seeing Tamalok again as a dickhead Romulan who loves to irrate Picard and they have a good honourable foes relationship, even if the Romulan is a duplicitous shitbag. Sad that the defecting Romulan killed himself but I found Picard's final words poignant about how the Admirals' family may not read his letter now, but hoepfully one day they will. All in all, one of my favourite episodes of TNG along with 'The Enemy' and 'The Measure of a man'

Also the Klingon ships coming out of nowhere felt a bit random. I may have missed that as well as some context on why the Klingons and Romulans hate each other but it seems the Romulans are an unpleasant people anyway so maybe that's why.

Decided to start rewatching Discovery so I could understand the context of Starfleet Academy. I forgot that the first episode establishes that a "Vulcan Hello" means shooting at the other guy first so that you establish dominance in your subsequent conversation, even if you're vastly outgunned and your commanding officer is too stupid to understand what a Vulcan Hello is.

I feel like they never knew what to do with the Romulans in any iteration of Star Trek except for Nemesis and Picard. In TOS they show up and are scary for one episode and interesting for a second one, but they're never developed to the same level as the Klingons and had very little impact on the show. They're just the OTHER authoritarian enemy.

Then in TNG they show up in S1 to be spooky and dress up like couches. They show up as the "big bad" of the quadrant because the Klingons aren't anymore, but despite all the characterization around them they only do one notable thing and that's Unification's attempted invasion of Vulcan. That was, like, 4 or 5 Klingon episodes in TOS. Other than that, they do some cloak-and-dagger stuff but you don't really get much of a window into why their society is so orderly and why the Tal Shiar is everywhere and what drives their militarism after the TOS movies depicted them as just another member of the Khitomer Accords, the China-France to the USSR and USA of the Klingons and Federation.

Then DS9 just doesn't do anything with them despite introducing a Romulan who joins the Defiant to watch over the cloaking device. None None of the cast and writer interviews ever seems to indicate they were going to have a Romulan join the DS9 cast despite them going to Michael Dorn and pulling in Worf. DS9 as a whole just wastes the Romulans because you find out nothing new about them, not even when they go to Romulus for that one episode. TNG was introducing new stuff about the Klingons every season.

ENT of course introduced Romulans early in the show and it was finally something different, while being totally the same. They were isolationist territorialists who wouldn't fly off the handle like the Klingons when you trespass on their planet, but then S3 makes them Mengele in space with mastery of holograms.
>>
>>217700577
>Then in TNG they show up in S1 to be spooky and dress up like couches. They show up as the "big bad" of the quadrant because the Klingons aren't anymore, but despite all the characterization around them they only do one notable thing and that's Unification's attempted invasion of Vulcan.
They also back Duras and try to take control of the Klingon Empire during a civil war. That's a pretty major fucking thing.

I agree they could've done more with them but that would've required serialization to a greater degree than TNG was willing to do.
>>
>>217700577
At least in Nemesis and Picard you get in-depth looks at what the Romulans could be: Slavers of lesser species, militarists with a code of conduct, covert religious cultists who use their natural shiftiness to propagate their beliefs to take power. It's interesting, it's different, it's something that, while not as developed as the Klingons, gives them more flavor than
>Surveillance State Romans who wear flannel in all environments
And finally Discovery knew what to do with them by making them unite with and restore emotional balance to the Ni'Varan people.

That seemed more like Selar's personal operation the same way the drone ship was Valdore's and the attacks on the Neutral Zone by a single ship was the Praetor's or the Tal Shiar joining Tain's plan to attack the Founders. Whereas Unification seemed like a real ploy from multiple levels of the Romulan government in the same way the Romulans joining the Dominion War and not just a faction.
>>
>>217700219
The Star Trek series are uneven; however, people forgive the shortcomings because the seasons were long and the budgets were low.
>>
>>217700577
The romulans never get more fleshed out despite being established and a very interesting group of aliens, they really don't lean into the vulkan/romulan relationship as much as they should
And then in ds9 the cardassians became the new militant empire and got all the qualities of the romulans but with much more screentime
>>
>>217701046
I think making the Romulans too focused on the Vulcans would've been a mistake. If every Romulan plot was

they would've become too predictable.

not necessarily, adding romulan infiltrators in vulkan government (which theres precedent for) would make for a lot of tension
they also did this in DS9 though with the shapeshifters, but romulans imitating vulcans is a lot more grounded than "anyone could be a founder lol"
