Is that why people were generally cool with a Baratheon taking the throne? What exactly is the connection between the Targaryens and Baratheons? Were the Baratheons Andals that just allied with Aegon early in the conquest?

A good chunk of Europe is like that. The coat of arms of Moravia has had a crowned eagle for like 700 years now, even though Moravia itself has been part of Bohemia since the early 11th century. The historical Czech coat of arms incorporates three crowned animals: crowned lions representing the dominant Bohemia, a checkered crowned eagle representing Moravia, and a black crowned eagle representing Silesia.

Aegon V (our Egg) had a daughter named Rhaella Targaryen. He married her to the son of Lyonel Baratheon (Dunk's bro in the show). Together they had a son who was the dad of Robert Baratheon.
So Robert had Targaryen blood, which he used to make a claim on the throne. But realistically he won it by conquest. He had a lot of support because Aerys II Targaryen was fucking crazy and made enemies of many lords, including the Starks of Winterfell and their allies.

The Targaryen-Baratheon connection is much older than that, going back to Orys Baratheon, who is generally understood to have been a half-brother of Aegon the Conqueror. So the Baratheons are both intermarried with Targs, and they are their direct relatives except without the incest.

Third anon here, but also remember that original OG Aegon suddenly and violently and overwhelmingly invaded westeros like 200 years before this show. The dragons were basically flying nuclear weapons because there was literally no answer for them for quite a long time and the fact that they had those dragons up to a certain point made it so they were the de facto rulers but by the point of this show the dragons have been dead for like 40 years? So over the course of that time and up until Robert's rebellion they wane in actual power over the continent because the dragons (their wmds) are gone while simultaneously getting more inbred and less and less effective as rulers as time goes on. Before the mad king, most other variations of his line that had similar issues would have had the dragons to back up their behavior 1 way or another, he did not. I mean don't look up what happens to egg in the show, the targaryens are crazy for a reason.
Then as well, Roberts rebellion was a course of very lucky and unfortunate events that ended up encouraging a Tywin and the Lannisters to make the coup overwhelming and inflict the final knife in the back, so to speak. But like I said no one would have had the ability to do any of that for the reasoning to do any of that if he had not been bad shit crazy and he had had any dragons.

It’s a bit more complicated than that. The Stormlands used to be ruled by house Durrandon, who were the original storm kings. After Aegon’s invasion, Aegon’s half brother and the first Hand of the King named Orys Baratheon married the Durrandon heir Argella and took on the old Durrandon coat of arms, creating the new stormlord dynasty. The Baratheons therefore descend from both the Targs and the old Storm Kings.

Feudal Europe was nothing like modern China, though. The concept of a centralised state censorship is a post-feudal invention. Hell, when it comes to Europe, the very idea that the royalty has an absolute say over the politics and culture in their land is mostly an 18th century development.

>the second novella is kinda even more smaller scaled than this and not much interesting really happens?
It's great because it shows the squabbles of minor nobles and how the smallfolk get pushed around. Dunk once again has to deal with the morals of the situation. Both sides make good sounding points, but also commit despicable acts.
The guy Dunk decided to fight for turns out to have committed some serious crimes in the past which he got punished for. The ending is also great because against all expectations its ends with the two sides marrying each other to solve the dispute. And Dunk gets shafted when his love interest marries some old fuck for political reasons.
It might be the best thing the fatman has ever written.
Also helps that it has a hot femdom lady who makes out with Dunk. She later becomes the Lady Lannister and presumably keeps fucking Dunk on the side.

he didn't want dunk to win, he wanted dunk to challenge Ashford's son
the tournament is arranged so that one at a time challengers come to the field, and they ride up to one of the champions, (the 5 guys with the tents sitting next to the field) and with their lance they knock on one of their shields to challenge that champion to a joust.
dunk could challenge any of the champions, but if hedge knight challenges the local favorite the betting odds on that would be very very good if you *knew* the local favorite would take a dive.

It's training, it's important to remember that Tournaments weren't originally just so "controlled" before it being just jousts and shit tourneys during the golden age of tourneys were strsight up mock battles where people died way more. William Marshall, who is definitely an inspiration for Dunk, participated in many of these mock battles alongside a lot of famour royals.
Anyway, basically it was training, because everyone knew and assumed there would be a next war even if it wouldn't be as high of intensity as the last.

What's there to be upset about here? She only married that traitorous shit in the first place so she wouldn't be disowned by her father's will.

It is more one of those things that is hard to prove x knight did aim for the horse, coupled with Aerion being a prince. Given that the show has it the crowd rioted and Aerion had to give up his horse, it also apparent it is not actually socially accepted.

Thank you because I thought they should have had Dunc say something cliched admittedly but come on we need him to challenge the Targaryen guy to a Joust and really give Dunc his big reason to kick some ass, and give his Knight a Champion (being the female supporter of a Knight if anyone is confused what I mean). He would say you can't kill her either because she is my Champion!
This is me speaking as completely a showfag not a book reader. This was the time they should have copied Boxing and had him say
"You kill me you are a coward! I challenge you and I am a Knight here. I have been given big offers to be in this tournament (referencing the betting jobber) - my strength is impetuous, my horse skills are unrivaled and...and... *the crowd leans in* the best thing for this realm is if your dad finished on your moms tits!!!! Everyone in the tent cheers!
Come on the audience needed that shit even if it was hyper cliched 80s sports movie fuck it.

He should be out, yeah.
The way it works, there are 5 knights at the start, who are defending the "queen" (the teenage daughter of Lord Ashford).
Anyone can challenge one of the 5 defenders. If you defeat the defender then you take his place. So in order to stay in the tournament and win a lot you need to stay a defender.

all of the high lords publically took Daeron's side but really stayed neutral because they didn't care one way or another and weren't very fond of the Dornish ass kissing, they all took Daeron's side but didn't really do all that much to prove it as Daemon and Ball were kicking ass across the country, only really the Vale stepped in and they got smashed.

Otto told Aegon that he just couldn't execute random ratcatchers, Tyrion told Joffrey he couldn't send the guards to starved people. Aerion reacted the way he did because he felt himself a real dragon and he felt personally insulted. It has little to do with politics, he's just an idiot and his whole family knew he was an asshole, even his father. It was his bad behavior what caused that riot and he didn't care. They didn't justify what he did as he earned himself to be exiled as result of being such an idiot that he caused someone to die.

True, but the Targaryens were surprisingly lenient as conquerors, leaving most of the existing nobility in place and adopting Westerosi religion and culture.

My point it that magic is a thing, but doesn't necessarily implies the existence of an entity. That's something people are just giving a form and structure based on their beliefs. Both Melissandre and Aeron could be just performing magic right and they both believe their own gods are responding when it's just magic working up.
