I have not rewatched S1, and I did not get through all of S2, but even at the time of S1, for all I did enjoy it, I felt a lot of it came of the fun of GOT being back. It was a pleasant surprise that it was as good as it was considering what happened to GOT, but a lot of the issues that I saw in S2 were things people were pointing out even if S1 - just even more apparent or worse. Except it's my contention that Jon Arryn lied to Robert about his cousin the king wanting his death.

We're told that Aerys sent a letter demanding both the heads of Eddard and Robert but the only people to actually _see_ this letter, were Jon Arryn and his maester. Jon Arryn was never going to send Eddard to his death and that meant launching a rebellion but this also meant the only troops available to him would be Northmen (a long way off) and Valemen (many of whom were opposed to the rebellion).

By lying that Aerys wanted Robert's head, Jon Arryn could bring in the Stormlanders to his side and hopefully get other noble houses to join the rebellion because if the "Mad King" was so crazy he'd execute his own cousin for literally doing nothing, then every noble in Westeros was in danger.

There is no reason for Jon to lie to Robert. Robert is going to be angry about Lyanna. Robert sees Ned as a brother. Jon Arryn couldn't get his all his own bannermen to join him and had to defeat those who resisted and even with the claim that Aerys wanted him dead, many Stormlanders still opposed a rebellion.

And while Aerys may have been crazy, he could read a map as well as anybody else and see that the Crownlands were right nextdoor to the Stormlands and the Vale. Bizarrely calling for Robert's head out of the blue means putting himself in danger and strengthening the rebels.

It makes no sense for Aerys to demand Robert's death but it makes perfect sense for Jon Arryn to lie about.

Intitially they are family members and friends of House Ashford.
Any participant can challenge one of the five. If he wins he takes his place as champion and has to accept challenges until he loses and gets replaced.

The rigging was that Dunk challenges the younger Ashford and wins. The Ashfords would bet on Dunk and make a bunch of money because nobody would expect Dunk to win.
Dunk then is at least one horse richer and can win more defeating challengers.
