he should have taken Jaime's head...and continued marching south. wouldn't have lost the Karstarks and he was kicking ass up until that point. proved himself a good commander (especially with the whole warg into a wolf and scout the area first trick). But sending Theon was his undoing since he had to fight two fronts suddenly.

Tywin started burning the Riverlands long before Robb declared war against the Iron Throne, he sent the Mountain to rape and pillage to retaliate against Catelyn for taking Tyrion. So the Riverlands already had a legitimate grievance against the Lannisters and they didn't have the option to remain neutral since Tywin was clearly going to attack them anyway
