It massively increases the number of misranked mismatches that occur and leads to legitimately lower skilled players getting dunked by people completely out of their range as a natural expectation without understanding those aren't actually other new learning players. In most extreme terms it's one of the reasons that most Master rank characters in SF6 are ~25,000LP 1500MR/null.

Like one of the most common things I read from new players in SF6 and GBVSR is "I went online and I was placed at [low ass rank] but I couldn't land a single combo" and then they figure there's nobody else playing the game that they have a chance against without the memed 9000 hours in training mode and quit, even though that guy who just crushed them is about to light up a 20 game win streak to a rank three tiers above them or whatever.

Minimum rank is way too fucking low in Granblue (S is the first rank you can derank from and I saw the literal #1 player in the game at the time play against an S rank when he tried a different character and lost his first match because of the two letters down system) but I'm not sure there's really a fair value for that anyways. Picking a new character and losing a little while probably equalizes faster than picking a new character and clubbing lower players.

If SFIV had character specific ranks you would still have people cycling between Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Evil Ryu, Oni, Sagat, etc. without a really major difference in skill beyond the top 1% where the online ranks are never really accurate anyways because of the disparity in match quantity and quality.

I don't know if other western espurdo video games are pure elo but they seem to gaslight a fucking lot less.

I like low-powered tag games, which is why I loved DBFZ before the kusoge patches. I don't understand this mentally ill mindset that extremely high power level is a fundamental part of tag fighters. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking high-powered fighters with 30 second bnbs, but the notion that they can be made just as accessible or mainstream as more low-powered ones as if gameplay has zero connection with popularity or player retention is laughable. Some subgenres are more niche than others because they appeal to less people, that's just a fact.

I think I would just have a universal rank that's elo or glicko like chess . Which is for matchmaking.
But a separate character rank that's like most Japanese fighting game ranks where it doesn't really reflect skill as much as how much you play and you can eventually get your super high epic master rank even if you lose a lot just by sheer attrition.

That way you're not destroying beginners all day and everyone knows you're on a secondary character because you have 2500 elo points, but are playing a silver ranked character. And maybe the elo isn't weighed as heavily if you lose on a secondary.

But that's just off the top of my head and I imagine that could still be somewhat abusable.

Not really. While in theory the power level will go up with bigger hitboxes, in general hitboxes tend to fit the animation at least somewhat. Because most fighters feature human characters, this means there isn't huge amount of variation between hitbox size. And one has to consider the size of the player characters relative to the screen as well.

Not by itself, since what you do with meter varies drastically between games.

Again depends on how one defines fast, but yes I generally characters zooming across the screen leads to the game being higher power level.

The biggest generalization I would probably make is that high power level games allow the characters do way more stuff that the opponent can't really do anything against. For example 50-50 mix vs 25-25-25-25 mix. Obviously 4-way mix is more powerful because it is harder to defend against, so games that allow you do it have a higher power level than those that don't, and games that allow you do 4-way mix from any hit have a higher power level than those that only allow it from specific circumstances. I'm not opposed to having more options, in fact I like having a ton of stuff a character can do. While more options always increase the power level somewhat, the key is how interactive those options are. High power level games tend to boil down to: "just hope you can do your bullshit before the opponent can do theirs".

I kind of like when your "progression" rank isn't tied to your matchmaking rank in general. Like in Halo 3 everyone thought they had to be a ranked 50 (and just clowned on high EXP ranks because of how those worked since some were only obtainable by having a comparatively shitty matchmaking rank) but in Reach people didn't get too tied up in it because they just wanted their super high player level that unlocked stuff. Although that's also because Reach fucked up ranked participation. Like two pictures, an expire ebay listing and an Amazon Japan listing with one review are the only information I have on this weird HRAP V3 variant with a 30mm Start button existing. Apparently the point of it is to have a closer 30mm button for Slinking as all these later models got a Start/Select swap switch but did anyone including Sako actually do that over rewiring one of the L1/L2 buttons or adding one closer to the light attack buttons anyways? Never seen a shipping option that made it remotely cost effective though, for me on Amazon Japan the shipping is literally 6 yen more than the item making it more expensive than a locally purchased Alpha but with no console licensing. I meant being able to convert any kind of hit into a big combo, thus less amount of times you have to deal with okizeme or Knockdown. In a game where most characters can just do one anti air or throw and get a 100% combo off of it, then a character that has to knock you down once and do 2 combos suddenly seems kind of weak because everyone else can do that better and more efficiently than him.

Even now, there are still some games that have a notable population on consoles. NA has a big amount of console players, for example.
