I actually like KOFXV quite a bit, but haven't played it in a long time. I would need to reinstall it. I never bought Vice or Mature, which is odd because I like both of those characters and still never really had a definitive third character that I liked enough to use permanently. But regardless, ggs. I could see the type of Santaku you were going for with Taka Arashi, just need to optimize damage in various situations. I feel like that's one of the things about Virtua Fighter that is kind of understated with all the character specific combos.

I remember reading when vf4 came out, several Taka players switched to Vanessa because she has similar types of three-way guessing situations.

Anyway, yeah, I was mostly just mashing though I was trying to genuinely dodge some of your moves. I feel like I had the right instinct on some punishes but I guess Vanessa can't be grabbed high in that low stance, right?
I'm coming from Street Fighter so I feel like an easy punish would be Taka's command grab but I wasn't able to land it once. I guess it's because to grab someone in this game you have to condition them to stand and you can't simply throw them.

I recommend doing the in-game tutorial if you have not finished it already. It's not perfect, but it explains some concepts in an alright way.
I think a thing that primarily 2d players struggle with in 3d games is respecting the plus frames. Disregarding plus frames is slightly easier in 2d since you have more fully invincible moves. But in VF, you have to rely more on things like imperfect Sabaki attacks that can ignore some move types, but not all. Closest equivalent I can think of it 2d games is like how you have moves that are throw invul but not strike invul. Or I guess like how BlazBlue has those head invul anti-airs that only protect your head and nowhere else. Taka has a few Sabaki type moves, I think 4P+K+G and 41236P, but I'm not super familiar with him, only having used him a small amount in the past.
Anyway, my point there is that you sometimes have to play a little cautiously and avoid pressing buttons at disadvantage since it can get you counter hit very painfully. Of course, like I said, there are ways around it with Sabaki techniques, sidestepping, or just reading a throw attempt (which means the opponent assumes you'll respect their frames) and hitting something anyway. But that last one usually takes a bit of conditioning.

When you get put into the side turn state, it's usually better to just guard (or to attempt a 2P maybe if you're feeling really lucky) because the opponent gets bonus frames from a side turn, as your character has to spend 3 frames turning back ground. So suddenly a 12 frame 5P move becomes a 9 frame move that you can't really do anything about other than crouch guard. Of course, they could just do a mid that comes out in 15 frames or less and win every time. (because even in the case of what would normally be a trade, the mid wins out because the VF priority system lets the highest damage attack win)

So while some moves can't be punished by strikes and are specifically throw punishable (the -10 attacks like Vanessa OS 3P+K > K, aka Upper Heel Sword), those kinds of situations are somewhat rare. Generally, the higher the disadvantage, the better off you are just using a launcher for more damage. There can be a reason to use a throw, such as better positioning (or something like getting a drink as Shun Di), but yeah, you usually get good okizeme off of the right combo anyway. For example, if Vanessa guards a move that's -17 she gets a guaranteed launcher with Hawk Strike, which leads to huge damage, potentially 80+. But her best mid-screen throw will only give 70 damage. So it's not a bad option, especially if you don't know the best combo for that situation, it's just not the optimal one usually.

Tying into what I said earlier, pressing buttons at disadvantage can work if you read a throw or if you think they're going to purposely use a slower, heavier strike that takes advantage of their plus frames, but it is really risky and often leads to the opponent baiting you with a mid that counter hits for even more damage and frame advantage. Or even a potential counter hit-only combo.

I liked your eager use of wakeup attacks. Some people play a bit more passively and are susceptible to getting hit with down attacks. Of course, while wakeup attacks can be good, getting too predictable with them and relying on them too much can get you in trouble. Vanessa can bait them pretty easily with her charged 44K+G. I feel like using wakeup attacks a lot is the VF equivalent to mashing DP on every wakeup. It will catch people that don't know their anti-wakeup options, but it will make you take more damage against those who do know how to apply pressure in okizeme situations. Sometimes, it's better to just do a normal P+K+G getup or even to roll away as you get up.

You'll probably do well with Taka in the future. He's uncommon, so many don't know how to do damage on him.

This is not ot imply that throws are bad in VF, of course. It's just that their application is not the exact same as in 2d games. As you know, even command throws can be broken in 3d games. And that puts the defender at a big advantage of +5. But throws have a couple of very good things about them. For one, they track in both directions. So if you read a sidestep coming, you can just input whatever throw you want and get the opponent. They can tech that as well, sure, but I mean it's still a unique application of throws. The other important thing about VF throws is how the opponent only has a 1 in 3 chance of breaking correctly. It's not like Street Fighter where you're just worrying about 1 kind of throw break. Rather, you can just use a type of throw that you think the opponent isn't looking for, like a 4-break, and they will take a huge amount of damage all at once. And since throws have no tell other than being a high or low startup animation, they never know what kind you're using. It's a pure prediction. With "grappler" type characters such as Taka, Wolf, and arguably Vanessa, it's even better because their throws can knock off a thrid of the health bar at once. And I mean that as a universal value because health is normalized in VF. Taka, Jacky, Sarah, even Eileen all have the same amount of health. It's just that the gravity system makes you fall faster, so Taka technically takes less damage from combos. But a throw is a throw, so losing 100 health to Wolf's Burning Hammer is equally devastating for all characters.

Oh, and before I forget, when Vanessa puts you into the Takedown stance (where she gets on top of you), it's a santaku situation where you have to input a 4, 5, or 6 break to get free.

My point was that the ring out is the only way to win in Smash brothers. It's not an alternate win condition. In the 3D games you're mentioning, it's an alternate condition that's not even on every stage. A bunch of stages in Soulcalibur don't even have a place you can knock somebody out of.

You know how an f-zero you can win by either killing most competitors on the track or by just crossing the finish line? I honestly think people would consider smash more of a traditional game if you could care with just any hit, but since you need a specific type of hit to score a ring out, that's probably why the distinction is so pronounced.

For the record, I'm not saying that smash is a bad game, just that it has a very different goal than traditional fighting games.

It seems to have the exact opposite philosophy of how fighting games are typically played where there's the danger of the clock on you. I understand why they use the clock the way they do, but it just feels ridiculous and kind of slow since the only way to win is the single wind condition of the ring out effectively. Time out is so rare, it might as well not even exist.

The only thing having top players give input for your fighter does is make that game play specifically to those players' tastes. Can't name a single game that had top players heavily in its development that was good.

It just sounds like he is unable to separate his own personal experience of playing old fighters from the actual gameplay of old fighters. What they actually mean when they say 'character expression' is that back in the old days fighters were so small and niche that even the best players often played unoptimally because there was so much less competition and information sharing was far more limited. You can see this whenever an old fighter is played on a modern large stage: MvC3 at EVO few years back was nothing but ZeroMayCry mirrors and the same ToD combo over and over. Same happens with other old fighters if the prize money and the stage grow large enough to attract serious amount of competition. Character expression was never real, fighters weren't just taken seriously as a competitive sport so more unoptimal strategies could prosper.

Regarding the second part, I think I get what he means. That was mostly the result of developers not caring much about the balance instead of just having something cool. Mostly because competition back then was just for a certificate or some free arcade credits.

But now since people are playing for actual money and potential livable wages, they have to be way more careful designing games. So you won't see a character based around one busted glitch move ever again in a game made to be an esport.
