The problem with lorefags is they want a story-focused aproach to the ip but then they don't want the fundamentals of the characters to ever change.
Good stories go through arcs.
For some reason Tails and Shadow are the only ones that are allowed to evolve as people but if Sonc made friends with a new female character and over time started casually dating her they'd flip out and say SONIC WOULDN'T DO THAT. It doesn't have to be a dating thing but you get my point.

As far as the OC's go, I generally agree with the negative sentiment, but part of the reason there are so many new OCs now is because everybody is so scared to do ANYTHING with the older cast because if Sonic so much as gets too angry at someone who hurts a friend of his or whatever people riot in the streets.

Well there's your problem. First of all the Sonic games don't do long form stories. Second of all Sonic has failed multiple times in the games.
IDW may have mandated that he can't, but that's IDW. Not a game. See what I'm getting at?

This won't guarantee a good story., but if you write a first draft and then proofread it asking "Has this character trait appeared in a Sonic game before" you will get an in-character result.
This does not mean the story will be good, but it will mean you won't have character inconsistencies.
For personal taste go ahead and cherry pick your favorite game. It doesn't even matter if it's SA2 or Lost World. What matters is if the writer likes it. It might seem impossible to make Sonic stories that please fans but look at the Sonic stories that truly make people livid. What do they have in common?


People love Archie, but it's a fact that the things it does with romance don't represent Sonic's character from the games. People love SatAM but Sonic's attitude is a bit much compared to any of the games. People hate a lot of moments in IDW. The most controversial issue is 50. 50 revolves around a character trait that can't be found in the games.
The people who will consume Sonic stories are Sonic fans so they will judge it based on their own Sonic standards. The games will always be your safest bet.
I think if you, an unprofessional fan writer, were to write based on the Adventure games like you said the only risk you would run into is getting a bit bland after a while.

I'll do it. I don't mind Sonic X but it is worth keeping it in mind that it isn't perfectly in character. It's just more in character than every other adaptation.

This is the easiest one to point out. Game Sonic has never been afraid of water and is officially described not to be. He just can't swim.

In Sonic X, Sonic stays in station square to help rebuild, in Sonic Adventure he seemingly just leaves after finishing the fight.

Game Sonic is above any kind of vile temptation canonically. So even if you corrupted his mind he would never fall into darkness. He is "too strong". If that happened in the games he would overcome it in seconds
>Unflappable
X Sonic is incredibly difficult to anger otherwise which is not true in the games. Sonic in the games does lose his patience when he's being disrespected while X Sonic tends to just smile about it.

Both of these characters are much more prone to anger in Sonic X than in any of the games
