This is inaccurate.
Yes, Sonic is cool where Amy runs hot. Sonic is chill and laidback, as well.
But he -is- hyperactive in his own way. That is the surface layer that defines the impression he gives off and how he generally interacts with people. "The Wind" is the inner layer, his spiritual truth behind that attitude.
Sonic's entire personality is being a Speedster -and- being one with the wind. He lives an accelerated life, always on the move, being impulsive and impatient and all that stuff. But, he's also a chill guy who likes to just crash on the beach and listen to cool sounds, because fast and free means he doesn't have a care in the world.
"Fast" and "Free". That is Sonic.
The difference between Sonic & Amy is that Amy is MORE hyperactive than Sonic is because she has no chill. Amy takes all the energy Sonic already has, and cranks it up even higher without the "coolant" to balance it out.

The one main difference between Amy and Ochaco is that Ochaco was trying to avoid or hide her love, and Toga as her rival was all about actively pursuing her love and expressing it freely but to exceedingly toxic degrees. Thus, Ochaco's attempt to "save" her came with embracing her own love openly.

I had to read the latest issue of IDW and i constantly ask myself, why the pacing and logical structure is so fucked up every time? It's not even unique to IDW, american writers are copying a really bad trend from each others. But anyways.
I can hardly tell which event has weight because everything unfolds so unnaturally fast, for example the way belle shows eggman he got no control over it's more akin to a parody than a real drama. Then after that i have no idea how they could trust a doctor who admits openly he's trying to control belle and... attack random people in a forest because he needs belle for his great masterplan? Eggman even says belle has forethought and is cunning, when tails is the one overriding eggman's programming.

Here's the sad truth.
Rouge probably isn't THAT interested in Knuckles.
She probably finds him attractive and after their initial meetings she probably thought it was a spark worth poking for fun, and she was definitely curious about what he was like in the sack. A high-tier fertility woman like Rouge would naturally be pulled towards a tribal strong warrior because her genes are telling her he could provide for her, protect her, and that they would bear strong children.
So she gave it a shot and kept giving him signals for a few games (subtle teasing and jabs, trying to convince him to chase her) BUT Knuckles was so socially awkward and unable to pick up on the signals, and after a while that's just a huge turnoff. She basically recognized he's emotionally speaking a loser and that's a huge turnoff. So she moved on.
Sonic Team was 100% correct in writing their relationship this way because it's actually extremely realistic to real life scenarios. If a girl is giving you signals and you don't make a move, she will move on, especially a high tier woman like Rouge that will have many options.
If Knuckles had internet on the island, he would probably become an incel poster, but at the end of the day it is all his fault.
